"I thank you for the offer, but I can handle him."

Svetlana replies to Alice "Oh my, thylacines... they can be- M'lord " interrupts herself with a curtsy when Norton enters the gate " they can be..unpredictably aggressive. M'lord" curtsies again when Rogar emerges from the wagon. "They don't usually-" her eyes turn to saucers when she notices Green Man "My Lord..."

Smedley pulls your wagon in front of the stables, walks back to take the reins from Alice and gets to work preparing your new horses to be stabled.

Svetlana recovers and quickly points out to Norton and Ta' de-win "Go on ahead ...brushes, fresh water and feed are inside the stable... all for 4 silver a day."

The Green Man directs a tusked grin at Svetlana, quite used to being somewhat of a novelty by now, and the deep bass chuckle that rumbles in his chest fits his appearance much more than the soft voice he next uses to speak with.

"I am no lord, Goodwife Svetlana, just one of nature’s creatures, just like these others."

He then begins to unload the skinned canines, placing them somewhere out of the way.

"I was informed that you might be interested in these pelts? You can deal with my companions; I have some energy left that needs to be used up."

Saying so, The Green Man hobbles over to the ladder and begins to ascend it after leaving his greataxe leaning against the wall.

"Two sets of hands makes the world last only half as long, don't you find Goodman Oleg?"

Saying so, The Green Man begins to apply his energy towards thatching the roof, not really waiting for permission or a reply.

could I get a diplomacy check from you Green?

Oleg seems a bit caught off-guard by Green Man offering his help.

Rogar stretches, savoring the moment jumps out of the vagon and smiles widely as Svetlana greets them. He bows to the woman pulling his hat down with a floourish.

"Well met milady, well met! My name is Rogar, of the Valertis family. I can hardly express my joy at seeing such a well built and defended outpost here, defying the wilderness and its lawless inhabitants! I commend to your loyalty and courage! We were sent here to help you tame these wilds, and I've no doubt that, togheter, with spirit and faith like yours we will surely suceed!"

Now it is Svetlana's turn to be caught off-guard... She blushes and curtsies again "Why thank you .. Master Valertis. Then this must be Sir Ogden?" turning toward Norton "Or is he still on the way? .. Oh my manners, please everyone help yourselves to the stew, bread and wine I've set out on the tables ... this one is on the house."

Seeing himself erroneously pointed as Sir Ogden Norton stops and bows to the woman.
"No lady Svetlana, sir Ogden had to withdraw from the endeavor, and won't be one of us"
"I hope that is not too disappointing. By the way my name is Norton, and there is no need for any sir. I think we are all equals in front of nature! Isn't that right Green?"
he raises his voice to be heard by the orc on the roof.

"Now excuse me, I shall attend the horses. Proceed with supper, I'll join you soon."

Norton proceeds to the stable. He will make sure Murak and the other horses are arranged.
Speaking with Ta'de-win in the stables "This horse of yours is an impressive specimen. Does he have a name?"

Svetlana looks unsure how to take this news of Sir Ogden. She casts a worried glance at Oleg, like a woman who knows what sets off her tempermental husband. When Norton excuses himself she replies "certainly" nods and smiles.

Oleg's face is a storm of conflicting emotions .. his temper perhaps diffused a bit by Green Man's offer to help and the words he has heard spoken by the group... he speaks to Green Man quietly and controlled "Thank you... I think we are done here." He climbs down the ladder and sits near the firepit - close enough to the wine to pour himself a drink.

Nortons call is answered by another one of The Green Mans by now customary tusky grins.
"He is a quick learner indeed this one, we'll make a man out of him yet."

As Oleg leaves the roof, The Green Man hobbles after, climbing down with more strength than grace.
As his feet hit the ground he winces a little bit but quickly composes himself.
He then grabs his axe, using it as an impromptu walking stick as he hobbles over to the fire.

"Are there just the two of you living here Goodwife? You have certainly done admirable work keeping this place in good repair if that is the case.
In the wilds, nature does not bed not mans wishes, so man must learn to live by natures laws."

@ Norton "Indeed he is. He does indeed have a name, but it is not spoken in the tongue of man. I call him Heart of Wind. You're own steed is a fine animal as well."

Male Human (taldan) Fighter (Aldori Swordlord) 03

Sir Ogden... was indisposed. But that's of no concern, really, he'll serve Restov in a capacity he's better suited for, I'd say. We here were sent to reclaim the wilderness for the swordlords, bringing law to the lawless and help to the helpless, and we were all chosen as worthy of the honor, so, don't worry about sir Ogden, my lady, you are in far better comapny now"

At this point Rogar, still inhebriated by the events, is waxing poetical...

For some reason Green Man's words seem to affect Svetlana... breaking a seal of repressed emotion.. tears well up in her eyes when she looks like she is about to speak, Oleg places his hand on hers and says "It has been difficult." He stares at the fire for a while and continues... this happens when all are within earshot.. after horses stabled..etc "I try to lead a life that .. where I can take care of my self and my own. That's why I took the charter to run this place. And ... well I'm sure the Lord Mayor and his staff told you of our bandit problem. Well now we have nothing left to give them ... I keep getting messages from Mr Chodair saying help is on the way soon." he takes a swig... "..soon ...soon ...Well we shall see about... thirty hours from now, eh?"

Male Human (taldan) Fighter (Aldori Swordlord) 03

A look of puzzlement crosses Rogar's face:"Bandit problem? I can't recall Chodair saying anything about that my good man, maybe because it's common knowledge the river kingdoms are only inhabited by thieves and pirates? Now that you bring this up Choair actually told us something to tell you... he said they should be able to send you troops in a week or so, provided the lines of communications stay open, or something like that. But no need to worry, for now we are here, and as I said we were sent to tame this wilderness. Showing some common thieves the error of their ways will be a nice starting point, almost a bonus I'd say!"

"Thirty hours? what's going to happen tomorrow?" Norton examines Oleg's face.
Sense motive 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 1 = 13

Norton watches, as Green expresses out loud the very same question.

"Green how was it on the paper?" Norton mimics an official voice "The carrier of this charter should also strive against banditry and other unlawful behavior to be encountered." Resuming normal voice "Am I correct?"

"We may not be the troops Sir Chodair was talking about, master Oleg, but, in my humble opinion, we carry some goods with us, that can cut us a deal with these men. Our impetuous friend Master Rogar will be happy to show them his steel and cut whatever is necessary to settle things down"

"Oh, sorry Rogar, I shouldn't speak for you. But I bet I'm right, ain't I"
Norton smiles at Rogar, sure the brevoy is not bothered by the remark.

Green Man:
He acts like a man who has grown tired of the taste of his own pride.. a self-sufficient man who had no choice but to ask for help from uncaring wealthy bureaucrats. He is in no mind to hear "everything is going to be just fine." ...he has had enough of being the weak fool...

Oleg slumps a little when Rogar tells him the lack of information about the Trading Post's specific problem, then mutters "A week or so, eh? Well I do wish them the best of luck with that." He allows Rogar to finish and you see perhaps a glimmer of a nudge towards a minor boost in his morale.

After listening to Green Man; Oleg takes a deep breath, sits up straight says "yes.." turns a little to set his mug down.

He listens to Norton. "Oh to be young and proud again as you.. invincible.. " Svetlana now grips his hand firmly. He glances at her and continues..

"It started about three months ago... that was the first time the bandits came - well I think I'd seen one or two of em in here before, but ...
It was an hour after sunrise heard a whole mess of horses coming from the south... look out and see em, knew they were trouble. About a dozen of em ... nasty, nasty woman leading em. Told me if I didn't hand over all the furs and gold, they'd .. they would take my Svetlana from me and burn down the post. So i did. And they have come back every month since then ... to collect their "tax."

Alice ponders Oleg's words for a moment. She then calmly states:
"It is our duty to take care of the bandits. I think we can handle them. A dozen men is a lot, so we should prepare a plan of action."

"Those I believe were the words they used in the charter master Norton, so it would be fair to say that these bandits are now our problem as well."

Hmmm, a dozen, that would be too many for us, even if we set up an ambush I am not sure we'd make it.

"And it is about time for that tax to be collected again then I take it?
So if we are to do something about these bandits, we would face a dozen of them...only chance to do that is to set up an ambush.
Tell us a little more about the bandits, what type of equipment do they use? How coordinated are they? Do they all come inside or do some say outside to guard?
And tell us a little more of the woman who leads them."

Hmmm, I wonder...my guess is that exploration is more important to the lords of Brevoy, but these people do need help, and it never hurts to have a place like this as a headquarter, especially not if the hosts have reason to be grateful to you.

"Well it was a dozen the first night.. has been fewer since then. I guess once they realized we were just going to roll over ..."

"The woman acted like she was in charge, she was the one who said the most vile things about their plans for my wife. She took Svetlana's wedding band and gave it to one of her men and nearly cut my hand off with a hatchet when I protested.. She was only here the first night .. to break our spirits I guess. Since then it has been half that number ... and some arrogant young tuff does the talking."

Having opened up, he seems a little less maudlin now - and receptive to rational thought. "An ambush you say? Hmm... maybe. I must say, I am heartened by your willingness to fight. We seem to be in this together... we have all day tomorrow and night to prepare."
"Yes...An hour after sunrise, there will be blood. I will not roll over again.
"

"Hmmm, the key to me seems to be to make sure they are not capable of fleeing once the ambush is sprung, is there somewhere a person can hide and then rush over and close the gates quickly?
I'd offer to do that task myself, if not for my leg."

"We should also take someone alive if at all possible, so we can learn more about where the rest of the bandits are...something tells me we must wipe this band out lest the rest come in force.
If the camp is not far, we can then track it down and strike before they realize something is wrong."

"We will strike like a pack of wolves in the night, surround and tear out the throats of these mangy curs, and show them who is truly predator and who is prey."

The grin that comes over The Green Man is nowhere near as friendly as the ones in the past, rather this seems to give his face a feral look in the light of the fire, like some great hungry beast from natures bowels.

Rogar good humor turns serious when he realizes Svetlana and Oleg's plight, these are normal people facing very real dangers, and fighting them as well as they can, risking everything they have:"My dear Oleg and Svetlana, we'll deal with these scavengers. Their numbers are of no concern, one, twelve or a thousand... at the end of the day they are still craven creatures preying on the weak and slithering in the shadows, when faced with curage and resolve these bullies lack the steel to stand their ground as real men do. And, as ser Ambrosi eloquentely put, I plan to give them some of that steel. I'm not stingy... not at all."
Rogar nods and smiles to the couple, hoping to reassure them, then adds: "I believe the notion of an ambush to be well reasoned. We wouldn't want any of these dogs to run away, we'll need to catch all of them so they don't trouble you anymore. Maybe we could lure them inside the palisade and then close them in... THEN we'll deal with them accordingly. The only misgiving I have with this plan is miss Svetlana will have to stay hidden outside, the sight of what will happen is not something a lady should see"

Male Human (Ulfen) Skald Lvl 1 HP 10/10 | AC:16 | T:14 | FF:13 | CMB: +5 | CMD:15 | Fort:+2| Ref:+4 | Will:+1| Init:+2 | Perc: +3 | Speed 30 | Raging song 6/6 |

The Green Man begins to slowly stroke his beard braid as he considers ways to make the plan work.

"Well...if they think the people here are coved, then why not just leave the gate open, they might take it as an invitation and saunter on in."

Then a troubling though occurs to him and he can't help but frown, pulling a little on the braid.
Eventually he sighs and begins to share his concern.
"But you know, for this to work, we can't tip them off before time, so if Goodwife Svetlana is out of sight, Goodman Oleg will have to be seen openly, otherwise even the thickest bandit would sense something wrong."

Male hp: 45/45; AC:17/14-ff16/14-tch10; F+7, R+4, W+5; Initiative 0, Perception +5

Well maybe a thousand would result in some concern. Norton smiles at Rogar outrage, and tries to drag the conversation on a more pragmatic level.

"Surprise is surely our advantage, but we need more insight before planing. I beg your pardon Master Oleg, were they mounted or did they came on foot? Did you see archers or bowmen amongst them? How does the exchange usually go? Do they come in to grab the furs or do you bring them outside. In the first case we are lucky, everything can go as usual up to when they dismount and start loading. Then we close the gate. Ta'de-Win can cast those entanglements she so usefully conjured few hours ago. And we gently ask them to surrender."

"If they are not accustomed at entering the gates we have a tactical issue, since we don't want anybody to flee. With Murak I can surely catch one, maybe two, but more than that would be hard. How do we capture half dozen men on open ground?"

"Don't remember much about weapons other than the leader with two hatchets - who I haven't seen near three months. And the one that has been leadin'em lately.. he seems to enjoy aiming a drawn bow at folks. Swords, bows, I guess..."

Oleg stands up and faces the gate.. indicating by pointing as he goes through the usual scenario.
"Last couple times they all rode in on horseback ... most of em dismount, I believe just a couple stay on their horses. "
But they mostly just ride up, lash to the hitching fence in front of the stables, one or two thugs with him, one or two loading straight outta my shed here.
"

Svetlana walks over to Sorcerer "Are you feeling alright?" She feels Sorcerer's forehead. "She's as cold as ice!... I'm taking you inside.. we have a little furnace by the bed." Svetlana starts leading her to the main house.
"Oleg, get them settled in and get our bedrolls out of the stockroom. This little one will take our bed until she is feeling better. Good night all... and thank you."

Oleg walks with them to the door and waits. Svetlana returns with a small metal box (each side about one foot) with leather straps and metal tongs. Oleg takes them, returns to the fire and fills the metal container with glowing coals. "Hotshot furnace.." he grumbles "Some merchant from New Stetven came by with "great deals" when we first got here ... sold me four useless rusted out catapults.." points to the towers " And these, for hurling hot coals at .. While Svetlana cleans up the dishes, Oleg walks to his shed and pulls out a wooden wheel - looks like a simple old wheel for a cart. He sets it up in the southwest corner for target practice with a few throwing axes.
