Oi, I gotta question...can zombies swim? Are they...coordinated enough to get anywhere?

The dwarf maid eyed the bars uneasily as the pair of undead continued to yank and bang at the bars,the rusted fixtures groaning with protest.She wanted to put them down without damaging the bars holding them in.

She gave the rattling bars a closer look. There seemed to be just enough space between them for her to strike her pick through without offering the gnashing cadaver her bare arm.

Oi! Gotta idea! What if one of us give Chompy here something to grab so it sticks its arms out and one of you lop its arm off? If they manage to get out before we finish them, an armless can't grab and can't swim!

Tol's heavy brows furrow in an expression of consternation and disbelief as Gatherine rushes past him in an attempt to attack the animated corpses through the bars. "Miss Gatherine, no! Be careful!" he calls out, tensed to pull the impetuous dwarf maid to safety if need be.

Iolana quickly turns her sight toward Averin,then again to the dwarves.

"We have an archer behind us Gatherine,we either all fight from a distance or all in melee.Or else Averin's efficiency will be hindered"


Right after Gatherine swings, the zombies go into a frenzy. One of the bars snaps from the fixture at the top. The deck above creaks and two planks from above fall. The loose bar starts to bend from the pressing zombies as Tol pushes Gatherine behind him.

Perception DC15:

Sounds like footsteps and a dragging sound from above.

don't know if it is clear or not but the front of the wreck is like a crumpled two story building missing a wall. The bars have somewhat kept the upper deck from collapsing. The upper deck is not visible due to the angle of the wreck.(angled like it is going up a ramp)

Averin commented as he attempted to line up a shot at the zombie that Gatherine wasn't in front of. Taking a step back towards the way they came to punctuate his hesitation about how things were unfolding, Averin released a second shot that looked a bit better aimed than his first.

Overhead on the upper deck, you see another step to the edge and drop down among you (N,14).. its legs crumple with the fall but it still attempts to reach for you ..

The first zombie drops from Iolana's spell (O,12) .. the second with Averin's arrow in it's throat climbs over it, making a raspy gurgling sound as it continues to work the bars open and push itself out.(P,13) move to (O,12)

Gatherine let out an ear piercing squeal of fright when the source of the noise heaved itself over the edge of the wreck's upper deck to land beside her in a heap, its legs crumpling beneath it from the fall. Undeterred by its useless limbs, its reached for her with a grinning skull-like face.

She thrust her buckler forward and swung her pick at it in a frenzy.

Mugambi:

You saw movement on the deck above and the colored light of magic being hurled.. It took them quite a while to make it out there.. While considering diving in, you hear yelling behind you .. first angry shouting and then a scream of pain. You turn around see Sasha on the edge of the 30 foot high cliff above the beach you are on. She appears to have several of the flying lizards swooping and slashing into her. One hand holding her bleeding sword arm.


Averin twitches slightly at the new zombie's entrance - tempted to pull out his sword and charge in. The moment quickly passed however, as he realized that Tol could likely deal with it for a moment longer while he tried to take out the last caged zombie. Drawing back a third time, Averin manages to land a second solid hit on the gurgling zombie. His arrow narrowly missing one of the bars and landing with a sickening "thump" in the creature's chest.

With the zombie's legs now useless Tol's swing easily connects...

The Zombie with two of Averin's arrows in him, reaches through bent bars and slams Tol across the shoulders 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21 vs AC 14 (18 from partial cover)
1d6 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6 damage

The crippled prone zombie goes for Gatherine 1d20 ⇒ 4 smacking harmlessly at her ankles and the ground below her.

How long is a while, about 10 rounds? If i decide to help Sasha, is thre a path to get to her? How long would it take me? How many flying lizards are attacking her? Are they small, medium or large? Tol stumbles and grunts as the zombie's claws leave a row of deep parallel gashes down his bare back. That one's a bigger threat, it's clear. But... Gatherine... He looks down at the half-broken zombie between him and the dwarf maid, sees Iolana approaching to aid, and makes his decision. "Miss Zerengo, please assist Gatherine," he says quickly, with a hard look in his eyes. He turn grimly to the zombie standing behind the weakening bars, and slashes his axe fiercely. Unfortunately, the lacerations in his back are deep enough to hit muscle, and his coordination is impaired; the swing goes wide. Don't know how you want to handle critical fumbles, DM Bloodgargler.

My house rule: with extremely rare exceptions, critical fumbles only exist if you are not proficient with the weapon or you have a BAB of 0.


Seeing Tol begin to address the caged zombie, Averin took the opportunity to finally draw his sword and leap into melee with their other opponent. The creature was even more unpleasant from this distance where he could practically smell the beings fetid breath. Pushing aside the common sense that told him he was moving in the wrong direction, and that AWAY made much more sense, Averin managed to aim a solid blow that he hoped would fell it's target.

Gatherine pranced like a nervous filly as the crippled zombie struck clumsily at her ankles,sending up a splash of sand. It flailed at her on its belly,rigor mortis curling its fingers into awkward claws.

She kept her buckler before her and swung again at its head even as Tol's axe slammed solidly into its shoulders.She saw him stagger in pain as the arrow-studded zombie still behind the bars lashed out and clawed three ragged furrows into his muscle knotted back.He turned away after saying something to Iolana who had her scimitar out as she came towards her.

Still, it reached for her with a mindless determination with stained teeth chattering in a rictus grin.She hollered at it in frightened frustration.

Grrr! Why won't you die and stay dead?!

Screw fighting defensively!

Despite the battle going on around her with the undead and her companions' chatter, she thought she heard a far-off scream back towards the beach where Mugambi and Gorra were waiting their return.

...Who screamed?


The crippled zombie stops moving after Gatherine's blow.
The one reaching through the bars knocks the lose bar free and slams it's clubbed fists viciously against Tol

The zombie busting through the bars receives a slash from Iolana's scimitar .. it hits with a good deal of force, but the blade barely cuts into it. Fortunately it seems like enough as it falls unmoving.


Mugambi:

Sasha notices you, she slashes weakly at one of the creatures and then runs toward and beside you. The creature fly at the two of you ..

After dropping the last zombie,Iolana for a brief instant felt satisfied,no,she felt delighted with all this adventuring stuff,she never had to try real fights.Her father taught her how to wield his scimitar and how to steer ships;her mother the way of magic.
She dismissed her memories to focus on the present Tol is badly wounded

The varisian girl hurries to check on the dwarf "Mr.Cherthand,how do you do?You got hit pretty hard"

Tol staggers under the assault of the zombie's pummeling fists. As Iolana comes to his rescue, dispatching the animated corpse, hopefully for good, he slumps jerkily to one knee, using the handle of his axe to steady himself. He looks around searchingly, eyes not quite focused. "Is... Is Gatherine all right?"

0 hp and staggered, but conscious. Not swimming home without some healing or a night's rest!

"You know her,nothing can trouble or harm Gatherine.But now we must figure a way to get us all back to....."
Now that her focus is again on herself and her companions,Iolana remembers she is naked,except for the rag tied around the crotch.
The woman's eyes wander over her breasts and on Averin,then she quickly turns on her heels giving the half elf her back.
"Haemh....us all back to Mugambi.Tol isn't going to be able to swim back.Unless any of you wants to look for loot here"

Gatherine saw how pale Tol was after the last zombie clobbered him before falling to Iolana's blade.She moved towards Tol,treading hard over the crippled zombie's back as she went.

I'll stay here with Tol and look for loot.And something to make a raft to float back across--I doubt I'll have any better luck trying to swim.

Tol half-walks, half-crawls to the base of one of the jagged rocks that makes up the island, and sits down, leaning against it. "Don't... don't worry about me. I just need... a little... rest... is all. You look for... supplies. I'll be right here." He gestures feebly at the wreck. "Just stay away... from zombies."

Gatherine frowned at the wretched state the older dwarf was in. he trembled with every movement,darkly tanned face beaded with perspiration and pinched with pain beneath his braided beard.

She wanted to say something comforting but found her tongue to be too thick to form words.The only reason he was even here was because she insisted on swimming over to the wreck.

He wouldn't have even been here if she hadn't stowed away on the ship in the first place. She felt guilty tears burn behind her eyelids as the thought gripped her.He would have died becuase of her foolhardiness.

She nodded to the semi-conscious dwarf and tried to smile reassuringly,I'll stay safe,Tol. For your sake. I'll gather some planks to make us a raft to float back across.Then we'll go through those potions and get you some healing from Mugambi,eh?

The dwarf maid started edging towards the wreck to see how she could get inside to search it further. She edged around the now truly dead corpses,giving the one slumped behind the bars an inquisitive stab with her pick to make absolutely sure.

Sis told me some undead like to drop and play dead before ripping your throat out once you let down your guard...

"Maybe ... Just two more .. and then one of those little buck-toothed babies is mine!" ... even injured this is the first time you've seen her appear to be enjoying herself.


You can just barely make out Mugambi on the shore. You see him climb back up the path and it appears he is moving toward a second person flailing about on the low cliff.

Iolana:

you see well enough to recognize Sasha's outfit on the flailing person, and that could be red hair.

Gatherine:

No signs of "life". It is dark inside the wreck, but with your black/white nightvision you see the other side of the cage - gate open, and steps just past leading up. There is a space on the floor next to the steps up that looks like it was, at one point, steps down. Now it appears to be just a squarish hole into the water. Past the steps there is just another 10 feet of ship before the seawater-filled shattered aft.

Like I said,I'll stay here.You and Averin would be more use to them--I'd just get in the way.Go on.I'm gonna start prying off planks for a raft or something.Remember to check my pack for those potions if you can't get Mugambi over here.

Gatherine heads into the wreck to start looking for anything salvageable,pick and buckler up as she cautiously edged inside.

'So much for catching my breath', Averin thought when Iolana discovered Mugambi's plight.

"Alright, I'm with you Iolana. Gatherine, if you run into any more trouble out here, you may try pulling yourself and Tol to that grotto that is below this outcropping. I doubt any undead's ability to swim particularly well, so it may provide some small amount of defensibility."

Turning from that, Averin stepped back off into the water without another word. Hopefully once Mugambi was sorted out they'd have a minute to plan what they were doing.

Iolana has always thought she had overcome her sense of decency;after all the rest of the Jenivere crew saw her naked a lot of times.But after awaking on the beach of Smuggler's Shiv she discovered she has still some left.
must be because Averin isn't a member of the crew, and i really don't know him that much yet,will have to look into this

Pondering, the varisian sailormaid waited for Averin to jump into the sea before her.
Then she followed him,this time it was much easier to navigate the agitated waters nearby the submerged grotto.

Do we still need two successfull swim checks before assuming we get to the beach without further rolls?
