With the improved lighting you see the statue more clearly, and can see that the water is about three feet deep.
There is a flash of movement in the water.. moving out from under the pier. An alligator with pale hide surfaces.. darting onto solid ground.. it snaps at Idril.

"Well that certainly answers the question as to what ate Nan." Erodel quips as he draws his blade and moves to the left of Idril.
Once in position, he hacks away at the alligator, but misses his target.

Bastargrae Sweetgulp |
Bastargrae yelped at the appearance of the albino crocodilian and swiftly lodged a bolt into its pale hide as it snapped it's jaws at Idril. The bolt struck true and stuck up out of its back, not deep as no blood flowed.
It apparently hurt enough for it to hiss and snap as though stung.

Jacques "Indio Black" Jhaltero |
"Hmmph..."
Another mindless beast, once again my true strength cannot come into play.
Unsure of just how long reach the foe might have with its tail, Indio takes the long way around, drawing his blade from the cane.
Moving to flank with Erodel, but trying to stay out of reach.
Asha Ebele |
A beast such as this right under the city was a danger to all, and it had already killed at least one person! Scooping a pebble off the floor, Asha imitates what she saw Idril do once - she places it in a strip of cloth she had cut specially for this and whirls it around a few times, letting it fly towards the beast.

Bastargrae Sweetgulp |
Seeing Erode getting mauled spurred the gnome to reload the crossbow without fumbling. He took aim, closing an eye,and squeezed off another bolt.
1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18
1d3 ⇒ 1
Yet again, the he struck the pale beast's thrashing form, sticking another bolt into its hide like a ill-placed piercing.
Asha Ebele |
Seeing Erodel hurt banishes all other thoughts from Asha's mind. This has always been the way with her - she could not stand aside when someone was sick, hurt, or suffering. She rushes forward to place a steadying hand on his elbow.

Bastargrae Sweetgulp |
Panicked when he saw the single-minded gator ignore the others flailing at it and began dragging Erodel to his doom,Bastargrae rushed as close as he dared and aimed at the beast's scaled skull. He squeezed the trigger to release another bolt with surprising force--into one bloodshot eyeball.

Asha Ebele |
Asha grabs at Erodel's arm as he is being dragged, desperately willing him to stay alive. She gives a wordless cry of distress as she tries to pull him back, although of course she is no match for the alligator's strength.
Lay on Hands 2/4: 1d6 ⇒ 4
DM Bloodgargler |
After a couple significant blows, the gator releases its hold on Erodel in order to flee with haste. Bastargrae's bolt hits as it reaches a few yards south of the statue within the pool.
"Craw!!"
Suddenly a black feathered and clawed figure leaps out from the darkness.. from the adjoined chamber. It lands next to Bastargrae... "Choff kill! Craw! You don't hurt Choff!" It slashes him with a clawed hand.

Erodel, Idril, Indio up
Bastargrae Sweetgulp |
Bastargrae nearly went spinning to the slick ground as the brute lashed him with an oversized bird's talon that shredded his poncho and penetrated his leathers. He let out a guttural cry of agony,HRGGk!!
He backpedalled, clutching at his side with his free hand as he took in this new foe. Some sort of mutant tengu?!
Idril Ssethan |
"No you don't!" shouted Idril as she stepped into combat range of the mutant tengu.

Asha Ebele |
"Wait!" exclaims Asha, too late, as Idril cuts the alligator to bloody ribbons. The young woman turns to their other opponent, her hands held before her in a pacifying gesture. "Please, let us not fight. Choff killed a friend of our friend and we came to see what happened." Her hands continue to pat the air in what she hopes are calming motions.
Diplomacy to calm Craw: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (1) + 11 = 12 :(
DM Bloodgargler |
The wingless birdman winces from Idril's painful slice, and responds to Asha.
"Craw! Already dead when Choff ate of him."
It leans in toward Bastargrae.. relishing the gnome's unnerved manner.
"Claws and beak put him down."
Something in its voice suggests it is pleased to have the chance to claim the kill.
Round 4
Erodel and Indio up... Asha an Bgrae can take another action +5'step if desired.

"Nice place our 'friends' have here... Erodel grumbles as he moves next to Idril and hacks at the bird-man.

Asha Ebele |
Asha continues to care for Erodel's injuries while sighing inwardly. She had tried to resolve this situation without bloodshed, but it seemed that neither party was interested in that. She was burning with curiosity to know what the strange creature was and how it had come to be here.
Lay on Hands 3/4: 1d6 ⇒ 6
Bastargrae Sweetgulp |
I-It did it! Put it down!!
Forgoing any attempt at diplomatically diffusing the situation as a chill raced up his spine at its malevolent stare,Bastargrae forced himself to skip forwards to fire off a bolt into the crow-ogre.
1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
1d3 ⇒ 3
His bolt was slapped aside with casual disdain by a claw from the brute.
DM Bloodgargler |
The feathered foe turns to face Erodel and Indio Black as they arrive to the melee, and deftly slices both of them with its clawed hands. It sways its head back and forth, and emits a derisive trill from the back of its throat.

Bastargrae Sweetgulp |
Reloading once more,Bastargrae steadied his quivering hands and fired off another bolt in the brute's direction. Although it might earn him another clawing he'd rather not experience twice,he rationalized that the sooner they killed it the less likely it had enough time to kill him.
1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8

Asha Ebele |
Some of Erodel's wounds close again under Asha's ministrations, almost as soon as they appear. The tingling in her fingers ceases and she feels drained. This way of healing people with her touch was always so exhausting, and she had done more of it today than ever before. Their foe seemed quite powerful as it kept clawing her companions to shreds while deftly avoiding their strikes. She hoped they were not fated to end up food food for the alligator, their little rebellion ended by this creature and not Thrune's agents. She almost laughed at the absurdity.
Lay on Hands 4/4: 1d6 ⇒ 6
Bastargrae Sweetgulp |
Bastargrae yanked his torso out of reach as the brute took a contemptuous swipe at him before going after Idril's mobile form.He couldn't help but laugh when it missed her twice while the barmaid and opera singer scored a red line in its feathered bulk with her bladed scarf.

Bastargrae Sweetgulp |
His curiosity overcoming any squeamishness at handling a corpse,Bastargrae prodded and pawed at the fallen creature. He,pragmatically, retrieved any items of interest for later.
...Hmm. Curiouser and curiouser. I don't think is actually a tengu!
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13Know to identity crow ogre
Asha Ebele |
"Erm, perhaps not, but the four standing over there are most certainly tengu." Asha gives the figures a shy little wave, hoping they won't prove as hostile as the freshly slain corpse now lying on the floor. She surveys the rest of the group, some of them bleeding from slashes in their flesh. She is eager to ease their hurt, but is unsure of the effect that her healing magic might have on their fallen foe, so she asks the rest to tie up the corpse before closing her eyes and falling in a brief trance.

Idril Ssethan |
Idril flicked the blood off of her bladed scarf with a snap and stood poised to attack or defend.
"Perhaps the ones who ask should introduce themselves first." She said politely, while exuding confidence.
"For example; I am Idril Ssethan, late of the Kintargo Opera." She said, curtsying with style but never taking her eyes off the newcomers.
"And yourselves?"

Bastargrae Sweetgulp |
Resisting the urge to jot down the series of events that had thus far unfolded,Bastargrae instead made a mental note to record everything that had happened in a journal and submit it to an editor. His adventuring career was off to a good enough start and only seemed to gain enrichment as he continued!
With a curt shake of his head,Basatrgrae focused his attention on the potential threats of the trio of tengu and the still lurking albino alligator.
Ahem. Here's a better question:Why are you fine feathered fellows down here below the coffeehouse? We came merely to check on our coworker who's been down here a tad to long so we came to see of he was...having difficulties.Instead,we find the poor man's corpse half-eaten before we were attacked not only by that pale crocodilian but this brutish not-tengu who gleefully admitted she was the one who murdered him.Bastargrae explained in a matter-of-fact manner, wagging a slender admonishingly. We were merely defending ourselves. We bear you no ill will....although it would reflect poorly on our impressions of you if you had a hand in this. As Idril's said, introductions are in order.I am Bastargrae L.
