Following behind the ranger, the sounds of battle became noticeably louder as the two reached the second floor of the boardinghouse. First Vegazi, then Mesa, saw the scene laid out before them:

Standing with her back to the new arrivals, a female elf wearing a top that exposed her midriff and long, baggy trousers (both of which were a light shade of blue), brushed away some stray hair behind one of her long ears to join the rest of the mass in her braided deep black bun. She assumed a deep stance where she squatted on one leg until the thigh was lateral to the ground, the other extended out to the side, with both feet parallel and pointed forward, relative to her torso, so that she faced adversary with her side. This was a posture that Mesa recognized as the "flat" stance, versatile enough to be employed for both attack an defense.

Facing the elf were two dark-skinned human men with bruised faces and dark hair worn in tight braids that fell past their shoulders, dressed in form-fitting leathers. Each of them held before them a metal cylinder that ended in a jagged crystal blade, wielding them as though they were daggers.

Combat Music: I'm A Dragon - Apashe (feat. Sway)

Round One has begun for the new arrivals. Declare your action, Mesa.

Kyt: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
Mesa: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18
Vegazi: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22
Freedom Town Assassins: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9

With a wide grin on her face, Vegazi wasted no time as she charged straight into the fight, bringing her blades to bear on one of the men.

Vegazi's Skirmishing Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
Stealth Attack: 1d6 ⇒ 4
Vegazi's 2nd Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21
Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7

Her target twisted away from the first sword easily enough, but was too far out of position to recover and avoid the second blade, which dealt him a shallow gash along his right arm.

In the time it took Vegazi to engage the enemy, the elf was in the process of launching her own assault, rising gracefully her stance with her long arms windmilling toward the other man.

Kyt's Flurry of Blows: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 121d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18
Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 71d6 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7

The elf lashed out with a series of rapid-fire strikes, her hands moving so as to seem a blur. She ended the chain of staccato punches with a blow from the heel of her hand that seemed to shake her opponent profoundly.

Fortitude save: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3

Both of the men are hurt, but the one facing the elf is stunned and unable to act this round.

Mesa blinked and let out a small grumble as the half orc woman rushed into the fray. She recognized the Monk as some one else who had been living there a while though the assassins with their odd weapons were a new addition.

She hoped they would be good tenets, there were enough noisy ones as it was.

A brief glance back told her that the polite Half orc had let his lover run up to do battle without him. Probably for the best really, she seemed the sort to get really angry if some one stopped her fun. Clearly a dysfunctional relation ship but who was she to judge.

Drawing Shiroi Karasu, Mesa considered her plan for a second before grinning.

“Okay guys I’ve always wanted to try this.”

Perform: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27

Song.

As the tones flowed from the instrument, the monk and ranger could feel their skin seeming to crawl a little. The feeling was not unpleasant or distracting enough to give pause, but a glance down showed a fine layer of blue scales sprouting from their skin, their features taking a more draconic tinge. Thicker scales formed as well around forearms knuckles and a obvious sort of ridge along their brows.

Mesa seemed unaffected by the transformation aside from the obvious fangs she was displaying with her rather vicious looking grin as she played.

Improved Natural Armor (Ex): The targets hide grows thick fur, rigid scales, or bony plates, giving it a +2 bonus to its natural armor.

The humans' eyes widened at the sight of the changes to their opponents' flesh. Only one was able to attack, however; the other was still reeling from the elf's unarmed strike.

The man took a step backwards with his back leg while simultaneously making a slashing motion with the crystal blade from left to the right.

Crystal Blade Attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
Crystal Blade Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4

He then stepped forward using his front leg, in an attempt to deliver a
straight knife blow at the throat of his enemy. Vegazi leaned back then pivoted at the waist to avoid the hit.

End of Round 1. Make your declarations for Round 2.

Combat Music: I'm A Dragon - Apashe (feat. Sway)
Kyt: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
Mesa: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18
Vegazi: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22
Freedom Town Assassins: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9

Vegazi glanced over at Kyt. These fools don't stand a chance against the both of us.

The elf gave a grunt and nodded, agreeing with the half-orc's assessment of the current situation.

Vegazi giggled. I almost feel sorry for them. Almost.

Vegazi Short Sword Attack 1: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
Short Sword Attack 2: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18
Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2

The half-orc's blades performed a dance that her human opponent found hard to follow until they were plunged in a double-stab beneath the man's ribcage.

Kyt's flurry of blows: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 91d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
Unarmed Strike Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 81d6 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7

Kyt unleashed another staccato of rapid punches at her stunned enemy, who wilted under the assault. As he fell backwards to the floor, the elf loomed over him, unrelenting in her attack as punch after punch struck the man in his chest until the human was lying on his back, unconscious.

End of combat. Good job, everybody. It's Final Fantasy victory dance time! Everybody gain 100 XP, which will put your total at 4,580 and only 420 from attaining 3rd level.

The elf regarded Vegazi as she stood over her own fallen opponent. Can you keep an eye on this one for me? There's someone I need to check on.

She didn't wait for the half-orc's response and immediately took off toward a nearby room and knocked on the door. Brinya! Brinya, open up. It's safe. Everything is alright.

The door opened just enough for the frightened but beautiful face of a half-orc woman to peer out from behind. Seeing that Kyt was okay, she opened the door fully. Thank the Maiden! she proclaimed in relief. Brinya poked her head out into the hall and noticed first Vegazi, then Mesa. Are these more friends of yours?

To be honest, shrugged Kyt, I'm really not sure. I don't know them, but they came and helped me deal with these ruffians, so that makes them friends at least for now.

Brinya nodded. Someone needs to go and get the militia.

I'll do it, volunteered Vegazi. Gives me time to find out where Daktani disappeared to. Be right back!

After she had gone back down the stairs, Brinya motioned toward Mesa. Thank you very much for what you've done. I'm not sure what I can do to repay your efforts on my behalf, but if there is anything I can do and it is in my ability to do so, you have only but to ask.

The Raven haired woman sighed, barely getting more than a few seconds into her song before there was no point in playing any more. She let the tune die, the scales flaking away and falling away like paper ash from the monk and rangers skin, the the soot vanishing without a trace returning to where ever she summoned it from.

Mesa blinked at the new half orc as if silently judging her appearance and if she would have issues making coin from the drunks while this new woman was around and decided the answer was no. Her gaze lingered a bit as she noted the elf thinking she might have seen her some where before.

Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12

“Yes, well right now the only thing I am in need of is getting to the shop before it closes..... I have no idea when it closes mind you. So if everything is settled here I should be going.” Mesa sighed crouching down and tearing a strip of cloth from the dead man's shirt before dropping it over one of the blades and picking it up to look it over, her amber eyes faintly glowing orange.

After getting her rest, Liesel-Marie awakens, refreshed and unconcerned with their odd location. She reaches for her pack. "I'm not sure what storm comes, but we have a moment to look at what we've found."

She shows little interest in the armor and weapons, since they had set them aside the first time they found them, and instead focuses on the healing and alchemical items.

Some clarification for loot purposes, if I may ask. Are jewelry and gems sold at full value, half value, or negotiated value? Are damaged items, such as armor I sundered to get to the fleshy bits of an adversary, sold at a reduced rate, as Rohan suggested earlier? Did we collect any items from the bodies of Grache and the troll? Other than their heads, of course, which Liesel did bring into the other-space with us.

Looking at the earlier suggestions by Rohan for sale and keep, I (player) am inclined to keep gems and jewelry rather than sell them immediately. The gems are lighter per gold sail than the equivalent coins - and we have quite a few coins, anyway. I would keep the potion of barkskin - Liesel will take it if Nyym doesn't want it. I assume it won't stack for Rohan. Is Rohan's list supposed to include everything that Liesel collected from the first two assassins? I think I might have more of some of these items and don't know if they are different items altogether or just different counts of the same items.

Should we adjust our stats as though we had slept for a night? Regain some hit points, regain bloodrage points, daily uses of abilities, heal ability damage, all that?

Items are typically sold at half their value. Your characters actually did rest for 8 hours, so everything that happens normally as a result of doing so - HP Recovery: Eight hours of normal rest allows a character to recover 1 hp per character level. A disabled character that is not aided by another can attempt a DC 10 Constitution check after resting for 8 hours, to begin recovering hit points naturally; Ability Damage: Eight hours of normal rest restores 1 point to each ability score that has been damaged; Conditions: One hour spent in complete rest reduces the exhausted condition to the fatigued condition. Eight hours of complete rest eliminates the fatigued condition. Bloodrage: The total number of rounds of bloodrage per day is renewed after resting for 8 hours, although these hours need not be consecutive. Ki Pool: The ki pool is replenished each morning after 8 hours of rest or meditation; these hours do not need to be consecutive. And if Rohan had accepted any burn, all burn and the associated nonlethal damage would be removed.

Rohan finally awoke from his deep slumbering nightmare that was causing all sorts of flashbacks and horrors that he honestly didn't want to remember. Upon waking up he sat up and looked around, you could see his entire body sweeting and the flesh of his skin unaffected by his harden armor as though the night erased all appearances of it. He lifted his arms high into the air and stetched, popping his head side to side, then lowering his hands. Shortly after producing a long Yawn, while not fatigued the dreams took a toll on him mentally. He took a cloth from his bag and wiped down his face and hands before lifting his massive 7"11 frame from the ground. Gathering his surroundings nearly forgetting where he was he brushes his long blond hair back behind him and tied it off with another piece of cloth, often used to do so.

"A very long night." His voice still crackling in his deep tone as he utters his first words of the morning. "I hope you all slept well? It was a much needed sleep, though mine was filled with horrors of a raggedy man and all of us were there. Though there were others that I never saw before, perhaps it just my delusional state of dreams."

The dream echoes in his mind like a nightmare should, though it was slowly fading in his mind after waking becoming more blurry with each breath he took.

It didn't take long as Rohan gathered up his stuff and wait for the rest of the party to gather there selves up and be ready to make our way out the portal. A blessing the (Silvermane?) man provided for us. He did however take a few min to focus his mind standing up in a posture much like what he envisioned as a monk pose, two legs out shoulder lengths apart, facing straight out, bringing his head down slightly as he put his hands joined as one in his center mass pointing his hands straight up much like a prayer. He needed to find his inner strength and piece of mind after a nightmare like that and to focus his strengths. Finding his connection to the earth or what presence of it existed here. His feet began to slowly merge to the ground below him connecting to the earth materials existing on this plane of existence. His body feeling more refreshed then the night before healing some of the injuries that he occurred, sadly there was not enough for him to fully recover.

Once done he looked around once more and was clearly ready to exit the unknown place of rest. Although he was grateful to have such rest.

As long as they're not broken, they're treated the same. Broken items are calculated at 75% and then sold at half that value. Gems are sold at full value, unless other conditions say otherwise.

Nyym had drifted off to sleep after a breaf meal. Exhausted from the day's events, it took a few moments for the adrenaline to subside enough that he could get comfortable. The events unfolding in his thoughts. The ceramony, the suspicious group, the nightmare and his brutal death at the hands of the raggedyman. Lost in the colidascope of events as they continuex to play out through his thoughts. So much did not make since to Nyym. The death of Rodrick that had catapulted his companions and himself into something unknown and mysterious. The rescue at the tower and brief fight with the assassin's wolves. The plague house and the events there. The strange enjoyment of the fight and the dark. Dak and Bax and the half orc ranger, the deeper into the day the more events started unfolding. Again the blackness of time before Trunau, the vision, who was he before? Did he really want to know? His strange attraction to the Monk. Why did he care for her so? The feeling alien yet familiar, yet he could not understand it. Was she something to him in his past life? He did not know. Suddenly things swirled in his mind and blurred as is his vision was failing.

Little Drow, Little Drow, come out little Drow.

Suddenly and briefly Nyym was back in Aohdens room, then the dessert as the voice echoed as if the sky itself was the source. Then suddenly a new voice joined in

And then – if we all won't cry, fer shore –
The Raggedy Man he'll come and "splore
The Castle-halls," and steal the "gold"—
And steal us, too, and grab and hold
And pack us off to his old "Cave"!—And
Haymow's the "cave" of The Raggedy Man!—
Raggedy! Raggedy! Raggedy Man!
Here comes the raggedy man! Raggedy man! Raggedy man! Hey, raggedy man!
Raggedy! Raggedy! Raggedy Man!

And again Nyyms vision blurred to masks of 2 encircling once more staggered one the the other as the voices continued thier mixed chant over and over as the 2 become 4, then 6, then 8. Circling and gathering speed till they blurred together in a mixture of circling color mixing together in some sick ensemble until they resembled the most of the Raggedy Man and the sky turned the color of fire. Dizzy and yet before him was Bax the Mask charging with her dagger. Piercing his heart....

You don't belong.

Nyym bolted upright wide awake. Panting for breath as if his very life depended on the next. Is forehead, face and hair soaked with sweat. Blinking and focusing, Nyym began to calm himself and take note of his surroundings. He was back in the place of the druid. Looking around he saw that his companions had already began to collect thier things in preparation to return. Nyym only nodded to them, not trusting himself to speak for the moment. Nyym quietly set about readying himself to leave as well. In his mind a new thought..

I no longer belong there and yet don't seam to belong here. But by the hits know this, I will survive to figure out this madness. And with it I will know where I truly belong. When I do, no one will ever take it away from me again.

As soon as Mesa's gaze rested upon the elf, a tingle ran through her body, making the Tian-Min woman feel more than a little anxious. For the briefest of moments, there was a darkness that seemed to cling about her like a shroud. Her clothing looked different as well, for now she was dressed in a sleek black kimono and tight leggings that bore shiny lines of scarlet. The elf's dark hair seemed to moved of its own volition, while her eyes, once orbs of solid blue, were an eerie shade of red.

Are you ok?

Mesa, startled by Brinya's voice, snapped out of whatever fugue she was in. When she looked once again at the elf, the woman looked as she had before.

Mesa shook her head trying not to think about the vision. It worried her for some reason, perhaps she inhaled too many fumes at the bar, or perhaps the Kotodama was trying to tell her something. That was worrying in it's own right.

Still there seemed to be nothing for it now.

She tossed the blade aside like garbage, reaching out to flick opened the pouch, dumping everything in it on the floor as she looked for whatever was glowing. Shiny things and trinkets were always a proper distraction to deeper thought and riddles.

The militia was not usually fond of people rifling through the pockets of the dead.... or dead drunk. Mesa had found that out early on. But a item such as this might be something of note, or profit.

Besides if she left any coins the man had be, the militia wouldn't think she had already tossed them, and she could get out of there sooner.

Rifling through the dead man's pouch, she finds two vials (one of which was glowing), a strange clay sphere, and a yellow gem of some kind. Mesa can also see that he was carrying five shuriken and a kunai as weapons in addition to the strange crystal dagger he wielded.

It wasn't very long before Vegazi returned with four members of the militia in tow, who set about immediately questioning everyone on the second floor of the boarding house, a process that took well over an hour.

Once the militia was done interviewing Mesa, she noted that Brinya and Kyt standing away from the others talking.

I don't care what you found, said Brinya. That couldn't have been his hopeknife, because his hopeknife was mine. At least, it used to be. When we got engaged, we traded hopeknives to symbolize our union, and had Sara Morninghawk engrave them with our love notes. Pulling at her heavy silver necklace, Brinya revealed her own hopeknife dangling from the chain. See? This was Rodrik’s hopeknife. It says, ‘For Brinya, my love.’ I don’t know where that hopeknife came from, but it’s not Rodrik’s. It’s not the knife I grew up with.

Before you came upon us in that alley last night, Rodrick told me that he had lost the hopeknife that I had given during the course of an investigation. I was so furious with him. I told him that him that I didn't want to see him again until he found it or he could go and be with the woman from the tug-of-war he'd been flirting with. Brinya paused, sobbing. If I had known then that would've been the last I would see him, I would've acted differently.

I need a DC 15 Society check from Mesa. Don't forget that you can add 1/2 your class level (minimum 1) on all Nature, Religion, Society, and Spellcraft checks, and that you can attempt checks with these skills untrained.

Success:

Success:
You were able to determine that the small clay sphere is a smoke pellet, which contains two alchemical substances separated by a thin barrier. When the sphere is broken, the substances mingle and fill a 5-foot square with a cloud of foul but harmless yellow smoke. Treat the effect as a fog cloud spell, except that a moderate or stronger wind dissipates the smoke and the smoke only lasts for 1 round before dispersing. You may throw a smoke pellet as a ranged touch attack with a range increment of 10 feet.

Vegazi came and stood next to Mesa. Daktani bailed, the bastard. He didn't want to stick around, I guess. She shrugged. I sure hope he doesn't run into that warrior woman or her two friends. Didn't seem like they were overly fond of him, which I totally understand since he helped Bax capture me.

Her pale green skin darkened as Vegazi's wide eyes narrowed at the memory. The moment passed quickly and the half-orc continued. Those soldiers told me something about that woman over there. She paused to indicate Brinya. Turns out her fiancée, a guy by the name of Rodrick Grath, was a patrol captain. I say "was" because apparently he died last night. They say it looks like suicide. Anyway, this Rodrick Grath was also some kind of local celebrity here, a poet and playwright. He wrote a poem called "Ballad of the Bloodmarch", which was made into the town's official anthem. He also wrote a play called "Hommel and Brekka".

Mesa remembers that at the Hopeknife Ceremony for young Ruby, the song was sung by the townsfolk:

Moonday ends when the drums of war begin.
Main Gate is trampled as orcs charge the hill.
Toilday we fight back, but to our chagrin,
Two of us drop for every one we kill.
Wealday passes as our boots pound the dirt;
With blood, sweat, and tears we refuse to fall.
Oathday our Sanctuary heals the hurt,
Orders to hold call from Ivory Hall
Fireday the Flame of the Fallen burns
For those who we cannot let die in vain.
Starday shines as our will to live returns,
Slaughtering the horde until none remain.
For the only hope we know in this life,
Is one that gleams at the end of a knife.

A love story, Hommel and Brekka is told in four acts, though the play’s running time is less than 1-1/2 hours. That he managed to compress all of the most meaningful aspects of a forbidden relationship into such a short work is a testament to his talent. The play’s namesake characters are actually a Shoanti warrior (Hommel) and a Chelish conqueror (Brekka). Trunauan readers particularly enjoy the air of the exotic in the play; and while Rodrick never visited the Storval Plateau, locals say he was entranced as a boy by the stories of that land’s sprawling plains, rolling river valleys, and hardened native people.

Vegazi sighed. The world is a dark enough place without having to lose a light like his. I can't possibly begin to imagine how difficult this must be for her, especially since there's to be some sort of memorial service for him this evening. And on top of all that, that elf said those men came here to kill Brinya. Can you believe it? First, her fiancée commits suicide and these guys tried to murder her. And I thought I had bad luck.

Mesa tilted her head as Vegazi spoke. Listening as she put a few things together in her mind.

To start with she had considered this a way to make some coin. Write a song about a local hero , cheer people up get coin. Finding out he wrote what he did made her disregard that idea mostly. She was certainly going to make some coin in regards to this, but that wouldn't be the end goal, she would also need to visit another shop to pick something else up , or rent one. Worst of all she would need another bard, she knew a few and would need the best one. They would need to be able to play the organ as well.

Mesa rose without a word and spared a glance over at the widow. She briefly wondered why someone would target her with her husband already dead.

That was something to look into later, for now she had a task at hand and despite the somber nature of it she was getting excited.

Finding another musician, especially one with the skills Mesa desired, for a collaboration on such short notice would be difficult. But fortunately, she knew of one person that could be of use to her.

Barnabas, a half-elf from Vigil, played a Taldan instrument called an organetto, but was commonly referred to as a portative organ. The portative organ was a small pipe organ that consisted of one rank of flue pipes arranged in two rows, that was played while strapped to the performer at a right angle. The performer manipulated a bellows with one hand and fingered the keys with the other. The portative organ lacks a reservoir to retain a supply of wind, and thus would only produce sound while the bellows were being operated.
Since the hand-bellows have a tendency to wear out fairly quickly from use, the best place to find him would more than likely be Meeson's Goods and Salvage, a place she needed to go to anyway for the supplies needed to make her thundersticks.

Apparently Daktani's conversation with Vegazi kept Mesa from noticing the establishment when they came through earlier on their way to the boarding house, as it is actually not far from the city's main gate (number 16 on the Trunau map).

The price for all the components for making thundersticks come to a total of 200 gp, with the diatomaceous earth soaked in trinitrotoluene oil making up the most of the cost. The DC for crafting it is 25. However, Jess Meeson is willing to have her husband craft them for you at a cost of 100 gp per thunderstick. And she's only willing to do that because of the writ Mesa has from her husband.

While she was talking with Jess, the door to the shop opened. Jess, dahling. Mesa immediately recognized the voice of the pretentious half-elf Barnabus.

The half-elf approached the proprietor, leaned over the counter, and planted a kiss on each cheek. I hope you have that hand-bellows ready for me to pick up, dahling. Ahm going to need it for tanight's performance.

Give me just a moment to find it for you, Barnabus. Without another word, Jess made her way out from behind the counter and up the stairs to the second floor. When she was gone, the half-elf turned to regard the Tian-Min woman.

My, my! Mesa dahling! He looked genuinely surprised to see her. As always, you look simply rahvishing, dahling. Just as with Jess, the half-elf pressed his lips against her cheeks. You simply must come to the remembrance ceremony for dear old Rahdrick, dahling. Ahm sure that he would have wanted you to. He spoke very highly of your playing.

Make a DC 15 Perception check, Mesa.

“Hmm a bit pricier than I can handle now, though if you can have him make me a three note a five note and a seven note, if my plan works out I might be able to buy them after tonight.”

At the sound of the opening and word 'Dahling', Mesa nearly dove for cover. She wasn't sure why , but she had a brief flashback of her childhood and a Oni she knew that greeted her betrothed like that, usually accompanied by an electrical attack of some kind.

Mesa whipped her head, that brief flicker of memory lost almost as soon as she had it. Turning to look at the other bard she sighed. She really had forgotten how annoying he was some how. She stood fast as he went though his greeting, her teeth gritted as she resisted the urge to bite his smug face off....... wait... was he flirting... no wait he was praising her....?

Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12

He was up to something, still she needed his help.

"Great , just the bard i expected to see. What did you plan to play tonight? Or did you have anything set yet?"

Again, Barnabus seemed surprised. Oh my, dahling! You came heah to see me? Ah can't tell you how much it means to heah you say that! He immediately adjusted the silk frills that peeked out from beneath the sleeves of his fur-trimmed jacket and the cravat around his neck before continuing. Well, ah have been trying to compose a truly magnificent piece for tahnight, dahling. But ah've nevah been good at coming up something at tha last minute. Then it came to me. Ah needed to collaborate with someone. But naht just anyone, dahling. No, no, no! It hahd to be someone on pah with my skill.

The half-elf reached down to brush his golden velvet culottes. But truth is, dahling, that you ah the only one qualified to perform with me tonight. So, whaht do you say, deah? Ah you in or naht?

Mesa winced a little glad the other bard didn't take it as something else. She really didn't need that sort of attention right now... well that sort of attention from him EVER.

She blinked nodding a little, he was not far off describing what she needed.

“Conveniently Barnabus That is one of the reasons I was looking for you. I do have something, but it was something that needed your instrument of choice. Provided it's not broken again. And I will need to find a violin as well. We will only have a bit of time to practice so I suggest we get started as soon as we can.”

Excellent, dahling!

At that moment, Jess Meeson, who had already returned with the musician's much needed part, spoke up. I just so happen to have a somewhat used violin.

She placed the hand bellows on the counter and went searching through the salvage that littered her store until she finally produced a battered case. Jess brought it back over to her customers and set it next to the hand-bellows before opening to reveal the violin. The belly was constructed from white spruce, while the ribs and back were made from maple. The strings were plain and made from sheep intestines while the bow was made using ironwood and horsehair.

The last owner said that it wasn't a standard one of its type, something about it needed to be tuned differently. As a result, I'm willing to part with it for say... 2 gold sails and 5 silvers. Bow and strings included obviously.

The violin in question is slightly shorter than normal. Typically, a 4/4, or full-sized, violin is about 14 inches in length and is tuned in fifths (G3, D4, A4, E5). The one she's offering is slightly smaller and is just over 13 inches long. Your best guess is that it's a soprano violin and that it needed to be tuned a fourth above (C4–G4–D5–A5) a full-sized violin to find its pitch.

Barnabus put the requested coin on the counter top, along with what he needed to pay for his own much needed part. He offered the violin case to Mesa, then took up his hand-bellows. Come, come, dahling! he exclaimed. We hahve so much to do in such a short amount of time!

As Mesa and Barnabus went off to practice, another event was taking place...

Scowling angrily, Daktani moved with as much speed as he could muster from his house. Given his circumstance, the middle-aged half-orc would have preferred to be nowhere near Trunau. Bad enough that he was running from Liesel-Marie and her companions, Daktani also had to be worried about having Skreed's gang possibly coming for him as well.

Thankfully, he already had a pack full of supplies set aside in case things somehow went sideways. That was one part of his training back in Freedom Town as a member of the Sharpes' Gang that he had never neglected, and, in this instance, it had served him well.

Daktani made his way to the town's main gate and exited them with little hassle from the soldiers posted there. Once he was on the other side, the half-orc's pace became a half-run, half-walk. The greater the distance he put between himself and Trunau, the better.

He was hardly more than a hundred yards past the Barterstones when the half-orc felt he was being watched by someone. At first, Daktani passed it off to being observed by a soldier high up on Trunau's wall. But as he moved farther away, that reason became more and more unlikely. The feeling was getting stronger the more distant he got from the town.

It was as though he was being followed by someone. But who?

His first thought was that Skreed had somehow learned of his betrayal, but he immediately shook that from his head. Daktani had only met with the younger half-orc at his own home, though he knew that Skreed and the others had another place where they lay low. It was more than likely meant to keep Daktani ignorant of the greater plan. Still, the older half-orc had managed to figure out some details on his own, thanks to his meetings with...

Daktani cursed himself for a fool and dropped his pack before turning around slowly. Looks like they didn't take you down after all.

He couldn't tell whether or not Bax was smiling beneath that mask of hers, but in the end it really didn't matter. Her eyes held the promise of death.

Daktani's left arm was a blur as he hurled a small pouch at the strange woman.

Attack Roll (touch): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
Fire Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 4

The bag, given him by Skreed, came apart to release a goo made of tar, resin, and other sticky substances as it neared the target of his throw. It covered her, hardening almost instantly on contact to entangle her at worst or hold her fast at best.

Bax's Reflex Save: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (2) + 10 = 12

But the tangle bag had a little something extra mixed within it: powders that burned at a high temperature.

Bax's Reflex save: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (12) + 10 = 22

Bax could feel her skin reacting to the goo holding her in place. She silently congratulated the old man for his cunning. Were their positions reversed, she'd have walked over to him and slit his throat.

Yet strangely enough, that wasn't what Daktani was doing. Instead, the middle-aged half-orc had picked up his pack and moving away from her as fast as his legs could take him.

All Bax could do was stare after him helplessly as Daktani got away, her eyes burning with anger even as the alchemical bonds holding the woman in place seared her flesh and burst into flames. By the time they crumbled away, Bax had sustained some major burns.

The woman immediately dropped to ground and rolled about in an attempt to put out the flames. Once that was done, Bax was back to her feet and downing the contents of a metal vial. As the magic of the potion mended her flesh, she tore off portions of her burned clothing from her arms, revealing imbricate scales on her skin that were mallow in hue.

We're far from done with one another, Daktani. The words came out as a sibilant hiss as she spoke. Enjoy your reprieve while it lasts. Once things are handled back at Trunau, I'll make it my personal business to hunt you down.

She produced a second vial and raised it before her as though making a toast, then drank the potion it contained before moving on.

Looks like Daktani got away just barely. :)

Rohan was fully up and ready to go, it felt like he spent years in here after such a long restless night from the horrors of the raggedy man. However he was ready to get a move on and find out what was going on back and reality and he wanted to get connected once again with the earth which felt so far away inside this place.

It didn't take long for Rohan to start heading for the door, focusing the light of the lantern on the barrier to allow for the exit to open up. Once the exit opened up he looked back to the group and spoke quickly.

"I'll be waiting right outside"

Then without hesitation Rohan exited the portal into the realm of reality once again. Unsure of how the time works in the portal, however, he was very happy to feel the immediate connection with the mother earth as his feet quickly merged into the ground beneath him. Looking around to see where he was and how much time had passed.

Once on the outside he realized he needed to heal up and drank the potion of healing he had inside.

Assuming that the others are prepared enough to follow Rohan out of the pocket dimension...

Upon exiting through the portal, the members of Team Ruby find themselves on the outcropping of the waterfall that was part of the Hopespring. Awaiting them were Silvermane and his raven, Vergazi, Sara Morninghawk, and Kurst Grath, whose dark eyes lacked the hint of laughter that had been a constant presence with his twin Rodrick.

Welcome back, said Sara with a warm smile. Silvermane was worried that your curiosity might get the better of you.

At this, the elf merely shrugged, then gestured toward the ancient lantern that Liesel-Marie carried.

The smith continued. From what I've been able to understand, you've been very busy since we last saw one another. I trust that your investigation went well?

Kurst seemed very anxious to find out what the group had learned, so much that he was having a hard time standing still. Vegazi, meanwhile, was engrossed with Silvermane's avian companion.

Not wanting to delay things further, Sara ceded the conversation to Team Ruby.

Liesel-Marie returns the lantern to the mystic elf. "I make no claim to understanding politics and intrigue. Someone means to do Trunau harm and either Rodrick discovered their plan or was near to it. They killed him to prevent his telling anyone what he'd learned. Of most concern, their plan is soon to proceed - and we don't know what it is, only that it is not good for our home."

She looks at Vegazi, "And Daktani? Did he reveal anything or do anything to speak to why his head should remain attached to his shoulders? Speaking of which," she drops a bag on the ground, a clear bloodstain on one side, [b]"Swords-for-hire. Big orc and a troll. These two, the one named Daktani, and an assassin named Bax. These and a group I don't know working within the city to prepare its fall."

After all that, she pauses, slightly embarrassed at the outburst, and looks at her companions.

Rohan was surprised that Silvermane and his ravern, Vergazi, Sara, and Krust where right outside as soon as they all arrived and his face described it all. For a second he went to speak to them, as Liesel tongue was much faster and quicker then even Rohan could imagine. He pauses and watches the expression of the others, then notices Liesel pausing and looking back to the rest of the group.

"Well I believe that about settles it from our point of view. Well put Liesel. I am really concerned with the lady who got away, and her skill way beyond our current skill level. She is a foe to be recognized. Though with her escape, I am highly concerned with the cities safety due to her escape. Apparently they have already been some form of plans in the making before we snooped in on their plans."

He then pauses again and looks back to the rest of the group.

"Anything else to add to our discovery? I do believe we are not equipped to handle her level of skill, sadly. What should we do?"

His concerned now reflected upon him and the city. Worried that the group including himself may not be capable of stopping the threat. Thinking on the idea of how to improve there chances, though his mind felt like it was at a loss for that as time was of the up most importance.

Kurst nodded as first Liesel-Marie, then Rohan, spoke. When they were done, the patrol captain approached the tall human. So, he began, you're saying that my brother didn't commit suicide, but was murdered. And that those responsible are plotting to bring down this town in some way.

He glanced down at the severed heads that Liesel-Marie had brought as evidence, then turned back to Sara Morninghawk. If they've come across these at the Plague House, then there may very well be an invasion imminent.

The half-Shoanti smith had a grim look on her face. That's a distinct possibility, Sara growled. And it's one we cannot afford to ignore. I'll see about getting together an emergency session of the Council of Defenders after your brother's service to discuss this. All of the councilors will be gathered together anyway, though I honestly don't know if your father will be up to it.

Kurst sighed. My father is the Patrol Leader of the militia. He'd be there. Especially if he knows that my brother was killed as a result of an investigation that would have potentially revealed this information. He turned back to Liesel-Marie. I would like very much if you all would join us at the Flame of the Fallen for Rodrick's service. I could tell him all of this, but he would think I was just telling him what he wants to hear. But if it came from you, then he would be much more inclined to believe it, especially since he already knows that you were given an assignment by Halgra.

Before speaking to Kurst, the others were speaking so he lowered his head and waited in silence for but a min, then when the air cleared of sound he spoke up.

"I believe that is correct. I believe based on what we found within the plague house including Rodrick's hopeknife, that all evidence shows that he was murdered."

Catching a breath of air, and lifting his chest up trying to show a bit of pride, and remembering that it doesn't matter about whether or not that we were powerful enough to stop the threat, it was the fact that the threat was there and we must do anything to stop it regardless of the outcome.

"Liesel is right, if they were going to strike the funeral service for Rodrick would be the perfect distraction for an assault, a large chunk of the town will be there for his service, which will make the town vulnerable to a invasion. If you are going to get the council members together it must be before Rodrick service or it might be to late."

Mood Music: Bear McCreary - Heeding The Call (Battlestar Galactica)

As the members of Team Ruby continue their talk, the peaceful afternoon is shattered by the brazen calls of signal horns. Shouts and screams from the town’s lower quarter joined the clamor, followed by a crash as an airborne boulder smashes into one of the guard towers. Trunau was under attack!

The solemn atmosphere transformed into a chaotic race to prepare Trunau for attack and protect its citizens. Voices could be heard rallying the guards and the town militia to repel the invaders. Those residents capable of fighting stopped what they are doing and head to the walls, while the noncombatant townsfolk hurried into the Longhouse for safety.

The Battle of Bloodmarch Hill has begun!

Mood Music: Bear McCreary - All Along The Watchtower (Battlestar Galactica)

Kurst, momentarily stunned by what was transpiring, snapped out of his stupor to turn and face Team Ruby. By the power invested in me as patrol captain, I hereby conscript you and your companions into the Trunau militia. The human continued. Since the sun is still up, the orcs will be fighting at a disadvantage. However, this siege action will eventually turn to their advantage as the sun dips below the horizon. He then began to point at various locations throughout the town. When that happens, we'll need to have all the beacons lit if we want to be able to fight them when it becomes dark. When that happens, I will need for your team to light those beacons. You've shown that you're organized and capable, so I know I can entrust you with this task.

Of course, with this objective there is a secondary one, chimed in Sara Morninghawk. Secure as many areas as possible as you make your way to the beacons. While slaying orcs is helpful, it’s even more important for you to rescue any townsfolk from danger they may find themselves in.

Yes, agreed Kurst. Direct anyone you find in the upper quarter to head to the Longhouse to take refuge or rally with the other defenders.

Silvermane looked to Vegazi, who nodded and went to Kurst's side. Mind if I come with? I can fight also.

The patrol captain didn't hesitate. Fine. You'll come with me.

I've got to find Agrit. Sara's fierce eyes betrayed concern for her wife. Once I know she's safe, we'll join in the fighting.

Kurst nodded. All right. Then let's go and show these bastards what we're made of. Trunau forever!

First, there's a new map for you all to peruse and it is that map we will be referring to for the course of the battle. You will have to scroll about halfway down the gazetteer to find it, but it is there. The areas that Kurst pointed out to you are the Commons beacon, the inner gates beacon, and the Flame of the Fallen (all marked B on the map). The final one, the Hopespring beacon, will be lit by Silvermane once the time comes.

Second, giving your report and showing the evidence will net you 200 XP, which will put your total at 4,780 and only 220 from attaining 3rd level.

Thirty minutes had passed and rain began to fall from the overcast sky. To make matters worse, the sun was slowly dipping beneath the horizon. Just as Kurst had said, the tide was beginning to turn in favor of the raiding orcs, for their eyes were far better suited to fighting in the dark than those of Trunau's human defenders.

Silvermane had already lit the beacon stationed near the Hopespring, but the light of its fire would not enough to aid the militia on its own. The time had come for the members of Team Ruby to light the rest of the town's beacon fires.

Before he and Vegazi left, Kurst had informed the team that because it was visible from nearly all sides, the Commons beacon was the most important beacon in upper Trunau (apart from the Flame of the Fallen). Lighting it first would be of immense help to the defenders.

As they made their way to the Commons, they could see signs of fighting everywhere. A damaged wooden footlocker laid open and abandoned
in the middle of the street. Not too far from it was an acolyte from the Trunau Countinghouse, the town's temple of Abadar, the corpse bristling with orc javelins.

When the team arrived at the Commons beacon, however, they found yet another situation.

A lynch mob had surrounded Brinya and Kyt, led by a priest from the nearby Trunau Countinghouse. And while he was only lashing out at her verbally, it would only be a matter of time before it escalated beyond words to become a riot.

Alright, Team Ruby. You're up. What are you going to do?

The shocking sound of combat surprised Rohan as things quickly turned from providing extremely important details to immediate onslaught of an orc invasion. He knew the time was going to come, but it arrived much sooner then originally expected.

The details were nearly flying by him as the group rushed towards the next tower to light the beacon when his eyes caught glimpse of Brinya and Kyt in imminent danger rising up around them. Nearly curving his feat as his body leaned sideways, his feet dug completely beneath the ground darting forward towards Brinya and Kyt, calling back to his fellow group members.

"Detour, Brinya and Kyt need our assistance."

Their feet moving quickly catching up to the crowd. In a deep voice Rohan spoke outwards almost to the sound of a deep trombone voice echoing to the surroundings, nearly scuffed out by the rising combat.

"STAND DOWN, you must stop your fuss and quickly make your way to the Longhouse, its imperative that you get there for your safety as well as your family. Your loved ones and your children need you now, take them to safety, so the militia can protect the town and insure your safety. MOVE you haven't much time, the orcs are already upon us."

Yelling as he approached the others, hoping that by the time he came to a stop that the group would take insight to heed the words Rohan spoke and dis-burst before the rally became more destructive.

Once coming to a stop, Rohan hair was scattered as he had not had the chance to put it back, and looked around, not even breaking a sweat yet, his High Agility and stamina made him a great runner to say the least. Quickly brushing his hair back and threw it in a very hasted pony tail.

“FRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAK!!!!!!!!” Mesa screamed out into the air.

Had to toss a little BSG in there because of the song

They had been set, they had been ready. She had been dealing with that twit all day in practice and now that it was finally, FINALLY time to perform. When they FINALLY got it perfect. The frakking Orcs attacked.

Mesa sighed not caring about the stares she got from her outburst. Most people already thought bards were weird why should this be any different. Granted her shout had been in frustration rather than panic like every one else's, so maybe they wouldn't notice.

Still perhaps the song could still be used to calm those at the shelter. She turned to Barnabas to pass on the suggestion. Something good had to come of this.

Despite Rohan's efforts, the primary instigator of the lynch mob seemed unwilling to budge.

I had nothing to do with this, Basil, said Brinya. Why would you even think such a thing?

And I suppose it's just coincidence that they orcs decided to raid our town at a time when we've lost one of our best warriors, yelled the priest Brinya had referred to as Basil. The same person that she'd been datin'. Had she not used her womanly ways to lead him astray, Rodrick Grath would be with us to help turn back the orc tide.

Many in the crowd nodded and shouted their encouragement. It didn't matter that even with his own words that Basil had contradicted himself. The priest of Abadar had played expertly on the sorrow and anger of the townsfolk to the point that they were about to do something they would regret later once things had quieted back down.

Just as it looked like things were about to get ugly, there came a loud scream from somewhere close by.

FRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAK!!!!!!!!

The cry was enough to cause a break in the tension, as everyone tried figure out exactly what had just happened.

Now that the tension level isn't as high like it was before, convincing the onlookers may be more productive than a direct appeal to the priest. To convince the crowd, you're going to need to make 2 consecutive DC 15 Influence checks. Success will cause enough of the crowd to back down to overturn the priest's leadership.

As Mesa and Barnabus were coming downstairs to exit the boarding house where they'd been practicing for the performance at the memorial service, they were able to catch sight of the crowd just down the street from where they were. Mesa is able to make out the elf woman he had meet earlier with Vegazi and could hear the pleas of the half-orc woman Brinya as well. [/ooc]

Rohan did all he could to try an convince the poor souls. Last thing Rohan wanted on his conscious in all this mess was killing the lives of the citizens in the city. Which he prayed it would not come to that.

"Let this be over quickly, let us return to battle the orcs and no each other." An so he tried again.

"Come now, let us think about this, we shouldn't take up arms against us, it will do us no good, and we all have a much bigger threat to worry about, The ORCS. What good will it be if we kill each other in the streets, you will basically being doing the job of the orcs for them. Lets turn our strife against the orcs this day."

Of course his words sounded like they were being bleeding out for mercy and not getting over on the people regardless how true they were. He shook his head;

"This will not be good for any of us"

Following up to his group members beside him.

"Alright guys if this turns bloody make sure not to kill them and use non-lethal force only. We don't want our citizens dieing on us even if they are not making rash decisions right this moment."

Rohan was trying to calm the crowd and doing so horrible, but he couldn't figure out where that loud fraaak came from, though more shocked that it had more of an effect on the crowd this his soothing words.

Liesel-Marie follows closely behind the man-giant, sliding to a stop with her axe already in two hands as Basil tries to stir the crowd up more. Over Rohan's objections, she roars,"ENOUGH! I have taken the heads of two that plotted the downfall of Trunau already today! I thought Brinya might be one, but found she was not. Rest assured, if I find someone working against our town, justice will be dealt. Now man the walls or find shelter at the Longhouse - we have a city to save!"

Though the crowd has not begun to disperse, Liesel-Marie's words seemed to be having some sort of an effect upon the townsfolk.

Now someone can attempt to continue what Liesel-Marie has started and make another successful DC 15 Influence check to change their attitudes, or attempt a DC 13 Influence to intimidate them into breaking up.

Once she and Barnabus were outside, Mesa could make out the rather sizeable crowd assembled around the unlit Commons beacon. From what she could tell, while there were others present trying to prevent the townsfolk from harming Brinya they did not seem to be making much headway with their efforts.

I need a DC 6 Perception check from Mesa to notice the wiry man-giant in the crowd.

Success:
Mood Music: Bear McCreary - Kara Remembers (Battlestar Galactica)

At the sight of the man, Mesa momentarily found herself in the common room of a tavern, standing at a table flanked on either side by the elf woman Kytynna, the man-giant, a grey-skinned half-elf, an Erutaki warrior-woman, and a Chelish man. Also at the table was a wide man with a salt-and-pepper beard clad in thick furs and wearing dark-lens spectacles.

From outside a voice could be heard, intermingling with the buzz inside of the establishment.

Doom is..... upon us! Pray for your salvation that..... doesn't take you!

If there was more said, Mesa couldn't focus on it, as she gleefully watched as the half-elf threw a punch at a nearby patron and initiated a full-blown brawl within the tavern. The memory faded and she found herself back on the street in Trunau.

Mesa pouts a little grasping at the fleeting flash of memory and more than a little upset it was interrupted by some weird voice. She was even more annoyed that it was interrupted before the bar fight really got started, she liked watching those. The chaotic and fast paced theme of the kotodama during them was quite exciting and still had a less jarring tune than actual combat would.

She scanned the crowd, it didn't seem very swayed by the warrior looking woman, though she did better than the male that seemed to be with her.

“A lynch mob..... crud and it's her again.... can't leave that girl alone for ten minutes with out her getting into trouble.” Mesa sighed taking note of Brinya. “ Well we can't have that, she's still got to live to hear the song I wrote for her husband... Barnabas we need.... Barnabas? BARNABAS!!”

Mesa growled darting over and grabbing the back of the other bards frilly shirt as he tried to sneak away from the crowd. The small Tian- min woman pushed the other bard back over to the crowd growling curses and small threats about putting frogs in his hair among other things as she pushed him back.

“ No leaving yet, I need you to back me up, this crowds gonna get violent unless we talk some sense into them.” Mesa stops dragging Barnabas pushes him upright and quickly fixes a ruffled doily on his shirt before grabbing him by said doily so he didn't run away before she raised her voice.

“You know I think what surprises me the most about people, is how quick they're willing to turn on each other and blame others for their troubles. You're city's being attacked, some of your own are out there now dying to protect you and the best thing you all can do is follow a suspected criminal to try and lynch a woman who just recently lost her husband, has had assassins sent after her, probably by that guy with how much he seems to want her dead. And before you ask yes that's illegal and it's why hes under suspicion. To be honest unless you're killed standing out here like idiots trying to kill some one else, I doubt your day will be any worse then hers. But hey you know who else judges people by what they look like and wants to kill those that are different from them? ORCs. I guess some people in this town aren’t that different from the invaders after all, maybe you should all go out there and make friends with them.”

Mesa paused for breath, some times it was too easy to get wrapped up in the emotions fed by the music and she needed a moment , she was intending to make them feel bad not turn that to anger.

“But hey maybe you just think that mob justice is justice. Well in that case you must be the militia, the people who’s, you know, JOB it is to bring about justice? What's that , none of you are militia, cause they're all trying to save you while you try to murder some one who's not even under investigation? So that would make you civilians and you all must be gathered out here in such a large group because you want to catch a stray arrow to the face if the orcs start shooting? No? WELL THEN GET TO THE SHELTERS ALREADY!!!”

Mesa huffed glaring at the crowd. The music of the Kotodama was very angry here, the notes of sadness and fear running along the music gave it a haunting quality as a background, but a heavy drum baseline was drowning most of that out. It was almost painful to listen to, so she didn't.

Rohan turns to this women who words were a bit over exaggerated then his, but with surprising results the crowd responded to her as though angels were whistling in the wind. Her appearance nearly stunning even though her race was unfamiliar to him. Rohan found himself dumbfounded in the midst of this crowd who took a liking to the both girls more then a mans voice.

"I must work on my commanding voice, it lacks authority apparently."

He lowered his head just slightly though he kept his eyes on the crowd to insure that there situation wasn't going to continue its uprising. Hopefully this situation was calming down rather than becoming another problem in addition to the orcs. Which brought to him even more concern as he looked around to scan the area of any possible orcs making their approach to the unsuspecting crowd.

Mesa's words took hold of the mob. One by one, the contrite townsfolk turned and walked away. Even Basil seemed ashamed of his actions toward Brinya. When they had gone, the group noticed Chief Defender Halgra standing a short distance away.

The weathered town leader made her way over to Mesa and placed a hand upon the shorter woman's shoulder. Well done, she said. Truly you have a gift with words that I've rarely seen. So, on the off chance that there may be other incidents like this occurring in my town, I hereby conscript you into the Trunau militia. She squeezed the Tian-Min woman's shoulder just slightly. You will accompany them as they go and light the remaining beacons, assisting them however they may need you. Hopefully, you won't be so crass as to expect some form of compensation for your efforts. Because you match the description of the woman that cast a spell on Patrol Sergeant Frum earlier today. I'd hate to find out that you were the one that committed that act. Assault on a militiaman carries a stiff penalty here.

Halgra removed her hand from Mesa's shoulder and flashed a wink Liesel-Marie's way. She's all yours. The Chief Defender then turned her attention to Barnabas. Would you be so kind as to escort a lady around town?

Barnabas looked to Mesa and shrugged helplessly. Well, dahling, looks like this is where we paht ways. He extended an arm to Halgra, who took it readily. Ahfter this is ahl sorted out, we'll perform that piece together.

The half-elf looked as though he intended to say more, but was dragged away by Halgra before he could continue.

For managing to not only prevent the riot but for also ushering the crowd to safety, the group receives 300 XP, which will put your total at 5,080 and is more than enough to advance the group to 3rd level. I think that means it's time to do your Final Fantasy Victory Dance!

Mesa twitched feeling the hand rest on her shoulder. Though as the compliments started the smaller woman started to smile, the grin widening a bit before vanishing completely as the order was given for her to join the militia. She visible flinched at the squeeze , her expression falling further to the point where it looked as if someone kicked her puppy. She visibly flinched again at the comment about the assault. If a human could wilt, Mesa looked like she hadn't been given water in weeks.

She barely noticed Barnabas leaving thought he moment the pair were out of earshot she snapped back to normal shouting at the departing pair, though no where near loud enough hat they could hear her.

“By the stars it was a frakking bottle!!!!!”

There was a moment of cussing in a few different languages and a bit of pacing before she pointed dramatically at Brinya shaking her gesturing finger.

“You stop making this rescue thing a habit!”

She then pointed dramatically at Rohan.

“And you, you badly need training on how to talk to people!”

She then turned the accusatory figure towards Liesel-Marie.

“AND then there's YOOU..... yoooooou... Have we met before? Cause you seem really familiar.”

Rohan snaps his head down to the little girl before him who immediately starts acting like she is the boss in the neighbor hood. He didn't really take kindly to the rude response that she gave and also felt that she came off very chaotic and unable to hold her own temper.

"An your one to speak dear girl, immediately barking off crude remarks to people you have just met. I suggest you take some time and calm your emotions little one, you can find your inner peace if you take the time."

Rohan intentions were to address Mesa at nearly the same remarks as she addressed him, unsure of who she is and being this is the first time ever speaking with her. His admirations for the way she calmed the crowd nearly vanished at her rude jester to him. Though he lifted his back up some becoming more rigid and towering over everyone at his massive 7'11" tall frame looking down at the others.

"Well, regardless of training or rude remarks it appears Halgra has conscripted you to assist Liesel and us to finish taking care of lighting the beacons to help aid against the Orc Invasion. I suggest you follow through and join us as this matter, This has been solved here. Their are more pressing matters to attend to immediately then bickering over who did what. Now lets go!"

Rohan Turned immediately and started off in the direction of the beacons as this was there original destination to begin with and he was dedicated to saving his city from destruction by a ruthless evil orc army. Rohan speed wasn't faster then anyone else but his grace and skill made it an impressive feat to keep up with him.

Assuming that the group is continuing on unless there are other some other issues that need to be dealt with...

The next objective, the inner gates beacon, was a relatively easy objective to reach, and the guards at the gate raised the portcullis to allow the group to enter the inner quarter, shutting it after them. Conditions on the other side of the gate contrasted starkly with that in upper Trunau. In the short time between the start of the raid and Team Ruby's arrival, the orcs had already wrecked much of the inner quarter, utterly destroying the wood pile readied for the beacon, setting fire to multiple buildings, toppling fortifications, and slaying as many townsfolk as possible.

As the group began to get their bearings, Patrol Captain Kurst Grath and Vegazi appeared, leading a squad of stalwart Trunauan militia members. Kurst acknowledged the group with a nod and approached after motioning for his squad to halt. Keep up the good work. I'm leading a sortie to drive that thing that’s been throwing boulders at the town closer to the walls so the archers can hit it. In the meantime, you can secure the inner quarter as you make your way toward the final unlit beacon. If you don't restore some semblance of order here, the inner quarter may well fall to the raiders.

Kurst saluted the team, then led his squad away.

Once in the inner quarter proper, the group encountered a makeshift barricade that had been hastily constructed before the inner quarter’s southern gate. The barricade was already covered in the spilled blood of raiders and innocents alike, and several victims of the bloody fight were strewn about the ground north of the obstruction. Acolytes from both Sanctuary and the Trunau Countinghouse have set up a small medical station behind the barricade. The priests were busily tending to injured militia members and townsfolk, and seem to have no time to talk with the team, other than to tell the members that if they find any injured townsfolk in the inner quarter, to bring the wounded back their position to receive medical attention and that guards garrisoned in the southern gate towers would escort those wounded who are fit to walk back to the Longhouse in upper Trunau. Overhead, the storm clouds that had moved in over the town earlier began to mingle with the smoke and the fading light of day to reduce the ambient brightness in the town to dim light.

There's a new map for this phase, conveniently called the Truanu Inner Quarter map. On it, you can see the trouble spots and visit accordingly. Each square on the inner quarter map is 10 feet. When moving diagonally, the first square costs 10 feet of movement, with every other diagonal square representing 20 feet. The beacon is 30 feet from the portcullis.

Remember that unless you have darkvision or other means to see in darkness, the creatures you face in areas of dim light have concealment (20% miss chance).

The barricade is approximately 3 feet high and 5 feet wide. It costs 2 squares of movement to cross and provides cover, but only to creatures within 30 feet of it. However, an attacker can ignore the cover if he is closer to the obstacle than the target.

Brinya will be escorted to the Longhouse by Kyt, who will return to the group later on.

Rohan knew that things might get a little hectic in this area so he immediately activated his Flesh to Stone Defense ability, at only 1 burn point. (2/admin DR -3 base hp) Also his Earthwalk took effect about the same time.

Slowly Rohan feet sank back into the ground as though they were nearly part of the earth beneath him as his glossy skin faded and became really rough as it seemed to harden to a consistency of a Stone rock. His enormous form, and stoneworked skin giving him a mere resemblance to a stone giant once more. If it wasn't for the fact that his height was several feet shorter he would presumably be considered one. He tossed his dark brown cloak back from around him to give him better mobility in likely imminent danger lurking around the corner. Took a minute to actually tie his hair back properly since he had a second or two, glancing to the other three as he did so and then to Capitan Kurst. Returning reply to the Capitan:

"We will secure the inner quarter no matter what it takes."

He returned the salute, after all he was conscripted into the militia like everyone else. He then turned back towards the gates as they closed behind him. Then again to the people quickly going by and telling us to bring the wounded back for medical attention.

Rohan approached the Barricade cautiously (partial defense) to look over and see if there were any orc or hostiles running a muck before they moved past it and onwards to the beacon.

As stated in my previous post, the beacon is 30 feet from the portcullis. To help further, where the group is on the inner quarter map is currently marked 1. The beacon, which is in that same area, is 25 feet southwest from the barricade, diagonal and to the left of the 1 on the map (the square with the pile of wood in it).

Assuming you've lit the beacon, it illuminates the area in a fashion similar to the daylight spell [bright light within 60 feet of the beacon and normal light 60 feet after that]. This means that Nyym (who has low-light vision in addition to his drow-given darkvision) can see out to 120 feet within the area of the lit beacon and 120 feet past that. Since Rohan is standing in front of the barricade on the side where the beacon is, he is within the bright lighting area and can't see any hostiles in the area. However, he does see something else...

From behind the relative safety afforded by the barricade and thanks in part to the lit beacon, Rohan could make out the horror brought about by the orc raid. Bodies of all kinds — orcs and humans, men and women, children and the elderly — lay scattered across the cobblestones where they fell in the small square of Trunau's inner quarter. It was only after seeing the corpses that his nostrils were assaulted by the heavy stench of death that hung over the area. Veins of watery blood crawled from the base of the well in the center of the square, spreading from the limp body of a slain Trunauan guard draped over the side of
the well.

A rare moment of silence on the battlefield accentuated the sounds of crackling flames and the steady, hollow drip of blood into the well. And then for a brief moment, Rohan thought he could see a woman dressed in a black mourning dress standing next to the fallen guard, but after blinking his eyes the person was no longer there.

What Rohan sees is in the area marked 3 on the inner quarter map.
