Jubilation fills the evening air in the normally staid town of Trunau, for it was the twelfth birthday of the Chief Defender’s youngest daughter, Ruby, and the townsfolk had been preparing all day for the ceremony and festivities to follow. A throng of spectators amassed at the town Commons; the buzz of the crowd subsided as the weathered town leader, Halgra of the Blackened Blades, took the stage and began to speak:

Thank you all for joining us this night. I take immense pride in my responsibility as Chief Defender, especially when it comes to the honor of the hopeknife ceremony. It is always a great privilege to bequeath Trunauan youths their hopeknives as they come of age.

Halgra stoppped speaking long enough to open an ornamental case and retrieve a slender, ornately decorated dagger hanging from a silver chain. It was similar to the necklace worn by yourself and other residents of Trunau.

But tonight is a special occasion, for the recipient of this hopeknife is none other than my youngest daughter. Again, Halgra paused, but this time she turned to talk to the child beside her.
Ruby, by the traditions of our town, you have come of age. This hopeknife represents your responsibilities as an adult and defender of Trunau. You must be willing to use it on yourself, your fellow Trunauans, and your family - even me, should it come to that. It will be a far quicker death than that which the orcs will offer, and providing it is your duty. Do you swear to guard Trunau from all comers, and to use your hopeknife only for its intended purpose?

Ruby - dusky skinned, black haired, and painfully shy — nodded her head in response to her mother’s question.

If the orcs come, and there is no other option, this is where you cut — here, here, and here.

Halgra demonstrated which arteries to sever while Ruby watched. When she was finished, Halgra sheathed the hopeknife and placed the necklace around Ruby’s neck before turning back to address the crowd.

Tonight, Ruby becomes a full member of our community! Let us welcome her, and celebrate her passage into adulthood! Trunau forever! The crowd echoed Halgra’s last words in unison, signaling the end of the ceremony.

A tall young woman, dark hair, tanned skin, and athletic, stands among the crowd. As the ceremony goes through the familiar motions, her right hand rises to where her own hopeknife rests under her shirt - to ascertain its presence? Or remembering her own ceremony?

As the ceremony ends, she joins in the crowd's shout of solidarity and smiles to her neighbors in the crowd.

It feels good to be part of a community once again. She hasn't felt that since... the memory fails her. Her smile falters for a moment. The memories always fail her, but she's decided that's probably Desna's way of protecting her from something she doesn't want to know. The thought of the Song of the Spheres protecting her, alongside the ForgeFather Torag, brings a wide and genuine smile back to her face.

She's back in the moment, where she prefers to be.

Rohan arrived a bit late to the ceremony due to the last min tying of his Hopeknife around his right leg, with leather straps that ran up his legs from his boots to his knee, also dangling a few hawk feathers from the side of the Hopeknife from the hunts. A simple black trench coat style cloak covered his green shirt and black pants.

Rohan arrived and watched the entire ceremony, nearly bringing a tear to his eyes. Standing 7’11, he was a very tall and big man, but not fat. He towered over everyone in town and regardless of how much people knew of Rohan and his large nature people still stared at him. His long blond hair and bright blue eyes, nearly covered his quiver on his back filled with arrows. He carried the long bow across his back, because it unwise to leave home without it, little did people know he didn’t need it.

At the end of the Ceremony he bowed his head in respect for a second, and acknowledged Ruby as part of the community.

Ky stood in the very back thinking about the time that she had spent with these people. The past two years had flown by since she had shown up with no memory of who she was or how she had gotten there. Here she was with the ones that had taken her in and treated her like family. And they all were her family to her now.

As beautiful and wonderful the ceremony is, it still saddened her heart that the Hopeknife was necessary. It was a duty and an honor that she would uphold. But she had vowed that she would do everything she could to put an end to the danger that threatened them. Maybe one day this ceremony would only be an ornamental coming of age tradition.

Ky pushed some stray hair behind one of her long ears to join the rest of the mass in her braided deep black bun. It had been short when she had gotten there... how time flies. She then crossed her arms, her pale skin brushing against the fabric of the light blue midriff top, sitting above light blue baggy ankle-cuffed style pants, her Hopeknife proudly displayed at the waist, and black leather tie up sandals that felt like she was wearing no shoes at all. Dressed for speed and comfort.

Trunau Forever! She called with the crowd. And I will help keep it that way!

The townsfolk wasted no time transitioning to the ceremony's more light-hearted festivities. Anticipation was high amongst the gathered Trunauans, for what came next were the games. These series of diversions made the newest hopeknife recipient - in this case, Ruby - the key player. The Truanauans were eager to learn what the first game would be.

They didn't have long to wait.

The throng parted as four individuals made their way through the Commons toward the stage. Of them, two stood out. Both were tall young men of equal height, with light brown hair, dark eyes, and narrow frames. They were the brothers Kurst and Rodrick, fraternal twins and sons of Patrol Leader Jagrin Grath. The others were, like the twins, members of Trunau's militia.

Make Perception checks to see if any of you can make out some whispers running through the crowd.

Their presence meant only one thing. The first game of the night would be tug-of-war. For the past few years, the tug-of-war had become something of a tradition in itself, pitting the receiver of the hopeknife against the town's best defenders.

Once the entourage had taken the stage, Rodrick, the oldest of the twins, stepped forward. My fellow Trunauans, the time has come once again to engage in the most decisive of contests, that most real of struggles. But before we can engage in the severest contest of supremacy, there is a task that must be done. Ever the showman, he turned with a practiced flourish toward young Ruby. Our young hopeknife bearer must choose from among those gathered here in this amphitheater a team worthy to challenge the best of Truanau's warriors. Who will our young maiden pick to round out her team? The people await your decision.

A hush fell over the crowd as Rodrick stepped aside to allow Ruby the opportunity to make her decision. An awkward child, she scanned the spectators hard, a look of uncertainty etched on her youthful face.

Who would she pick?

Strength was not Rohan Specialty though grace was a better play for majority of his skills. He stood there watching Ruby as she looked intently into the crowed. Poor Rohan stood out like a soar thumb among the other people as his height towered above them and all Rohan could think was:

Don't pick me, my strength is that of the commoners, s*&% she looking directly at me.

Feeling like here eyes kept looking on to him, perhaps it was his odd height that made him feel like he always being watched. He slowly took a knee in the middle of the crowd to bring his head level down to about the height of everyone else. Listening into what people were saying.

Rohan thinks off in his own mind for a moment, before looking back up to Ruby, hoping to be ignored due to his height while he was on his knee.

"Hmmm, perhaps later on it might be best to address the situation with the youngsters graffiti, perhaps talk some since into these young boys and make them see the ill ways of it.

Rohan makes a mental note for the future after the Hopeknife celebration. It was important that all attention be on Ruby and the other Fellow Hopeknife graduates, while Ruby was the primary focus others would have gone through the ceremony as well.

He says faintly almost to his self, though his voice was very deep, much as if you were listening to a giant trying to whisper.

"Bless you Ruby, your day has finally come though it would be nice if the hopeknife was no longer needed"

His thoughts pander on to a future where the Orcs would no longer be a threat but that is only a dream that many have yet to discover.

Although only mere moments had passed, to Ruby it seemed as though it had been an eternity as she searched the crowd for members of her team. But at long last, the shy little girl had come to a decision.

She motioned to Rodrick, who knelt down next to her, and whispered in his ear. As she did so, the man's expression became one of exaggerated awe. He looked back at her. Is this your final decision?

Ruby nodded a somewhat fearful affirmative.

Rodrick stood up, then raised his arms to silence the crowd. Ruby has chosen her teammates. When I call your names, please come forth and take your place beside her on the stage.

Liesel-Marie. Kytynna. Nym. Rohan. You have been selected to be members of Team Ruby.

Rohan, bowed his head, while he didn’t wish to be selected it was an honor to be chosen by Ruby. He slowly stood from his kneeling position, brushing the dirt from his knees as he came to a towering stance of 7”11. He moved slowly towards the stage as though gliding through the crowd due to his acrobatic prowess. His slender build lacked much strength, in fact he appeared physically toned and fairly healthy. Once Rohan made it to the stage he stopped before he took his place on the stage and glanced back at the crowd, looking down at everyone, then stepped up on to stage skipping every other step. He approached Ruby and partial bow before her:

”It will be a honor to serve on your team”

Rohan stood back up from his bow and took his place next to the Beautiful ladies who outshined his rugged appearance. He quickly glanced down at the two ladies.

”Pleasure ladies, this will be interesting”

He whispered not to be too loud for the crowd to hear but loud enough the ladies could hear him.

Liesel-Marie is genuinely confused for a moment before the woman's comment sinks in. "You mean she did mean me?"

She makes her way through the crowd, smiling ruefully at familiar faces as she does. Climbing the steps, she turns to wave to the crowd before making her way to the girl. She solemnly holds out a hand, palm up, for the girl to place hers in. When Ruby complies, somewhat confused, Liesel-Marie bows over the hand. "Thank you for selecting me. I will do my best."

When Rohan makes his remark, she nods and grins. Leaning in to whisper, she says, "Tug of war? Oh, boy. We will need a strong anchor. I have been working in the forges - I'm no dwarf, but I'm pretty strong. How about you?"

She blushes at 'dear' and the assessment he provided and looks out at the crowd, wondering who Nym might be. Funny - it's been a long time since I felt like a little girl, but he's so tall... I towered over the boys my age... didn't I? Even the elders, I remember old people looking up... was that home? As she ponders, without thinking about it, she slouches to make her shorter than her six feet even though Rohan makes her look like a child when compared to his extreme height.

She frowns for the briefest moment as the frustration returns, but then she realizes where she is. She straightens up, proud of her warrior's build once more, and her big smile comes back as she returns a wave to a little girl she recognizes. Yes, that's Allie. Rodrick sized up the three that stood next to young Ruby. He nodded, as though satisfied, then turned to face the crowd.

Ruby, it seems, has chosen a giant, along with two capable and attractive young women to be a part of her team. But where is the fifth person? Where is Nym?

The onlookers began to talk among themselves. In the time they had done this ceremony, this was the first where one selected for the tug-of-war had failed to appear.

Noting the mood of the crowd was beginning to become hostile, Ruby hid behind Rohan. For his part, Rodrick did not appreciate the delay, which was apparent as he called for silence.

We shall give him time to appear before us. We will exercise patience. In the meantime, I shall perform for you all The Ballad of the Bloodmarch.

A hush fell over the assembled Trunauans. This was the poem that had made the elder Grath brother famous. He had written it after the townsfolk had held off the orcs of Legbreaker tribe for 6 days before finally routing them. And though it spoke of pride and heroism, the poem also spoke to the horrors of war. The piece, by decree of Chief Defender Halgra, had been named the official anthem of Trunau.

As Rodrick spoke the words, it wasn't long before the other townsfolk joined in. Even shy Ruby found the strength to move from behind giant Rohan to take part in the spectacle.

Moonday ends when the drums of war begin.
Main Gate is trampled as orcs charge the hill.
Toilday we fight back, but to our chagrin,
Two of us drop for every one we kill.
Wealday passes as our boots pound the dirt;
With blood, sweat, and tears we refuse to fall.
Oathday our Sanctuary heals the hurt,
Orders to hold call from Ivory Hall
Fireday the Flame of the Fallen burns
For those who we cannot let die in vain.
Starday shines as our will to live returns,
Slaughtering the horde until none remain.
For the only hope we know in this life,
Is one that gleams at the end of a knife.

Why would she call me into the open now. Rohan Turned his head and watched Ruby as she hid behind him, then revealing herself once the bardic poem began. A smile crossed his face as he watched Ruby Reaction, finding a bit of happiness that she finds a giant of a man to provide safety for a tiny little girl.

”Fascinating”

The words rumble from his lips when she stepped out and the poem began. A few minutes later, he steps back at the mere surprise of Nyym nearly appearing out of thin air, missing his steps onto the stage and revealing his dark elven features. Rohan looked at Nyym and saw the dark features but couldn’t place what type of elf he might be, it was as if he could recall it but then failed to do so.

”I have his kind before, I think, wait maybe not. I wonder what type of elf he is.”

Rohan recognized that he has spoke with him and perhaps even had a few assignments with him but this was the first time he saw his face.

”Nyym, little man what’s happening? Get over and join the lineup! Thought you would never show…”

Rohan called out to Nyym in a joking fashion, his deep voice nearly echoing across the stage, not realizing that his deep voice carried further than expected on a stage.

Ruby, nonplussed by Nyym's dramatic arrival, got in front of the half-elf. Took your sweet time getting here, didn't you? Though her expression seemed angry, her tone held a playful edge to it, which elicited a smattering of laughter from the assembled Trunauans.

A smirking Rodrick raised a hand that brought silence throughout the Commons. And so the final member of Team Ruby has shown himself, doing so with a style and flair that almost matches my own. His words were accompanied with a bow and a wink.

Now that all of the players are gathered together, we can get this game underway. This was met with howls of approval from the audience.

The militia team departed the stage one by one, making their way through the crowd toward the site of the tug-of-war. Lying on the ground was a length of rope. One by one, the team took their positions, with Kurst as anchor and Rodrick taking the point.

The rest of the onlookers turned back to the stage to see what the members of Team Ruby would do.

Ky bows to Ruby

We shall follow you Miss Ruby! Lead us to victory! I'm sure all agree that we will do our best!

She then nods to Rohan towards Ruby to see if he picks up her drift, mainly the girl. Mouthing...

Let's give them a show shall we?

Rohan looks to Ruby and the rest of the party and brushes his hair back with his index finger as they walk towards the rope for tug of war. Calmly suggesting to her;

"Ruby, I believe it would be best if I stand at the rear for anchor. That way you little ones won't be flailing in the air grasping the rope."

Surprisingly he mentions this with out cracking a single smile, in a calm but serious gesture.

"Everyone here is rather short, though surprisingly Ms. Frostvale is closest to my height out of all these people, ky looks like she as finesse as me, and Nyym, well there is much to learn about him."

His thoughts just passing through as he scans though the party. His stride is long but no faster than the average person, though he walks almost as if he is floating on the air beneath his feet, such grace in his movements.

Once Rohan arrives at the rope, he reaches down and picks up the rope at the position that Ruby suggested, likely being the anchor, tossing one hand back to prevent the arrows from his quiver from flailing about. Realizing that they may fall during the tug of war, he holds on to the rope but takes his quiver and bow off and sets them to the side so they are not damaged during the competition.

"Shall we begin"

Looking at their relative heights, Liesel-Marie concedes that it might make sense for the two taller members of the team to be in back, anchoring the team. It's all up to Ruby, really.

Ky slaps her palm to her head and laughs mentally... Drift not picked up, but if we are the victors maybe a shoulder ride for Ruby will come out of it then. She thought to herself. She looked to see where she fit in the height line and took her part of the rope. Let us see who will be rolling in the mud when this was over. It looked so far that they had a good shot at winning this.

May the best team win! She called out to the other side in a challenging playful semi sarcastic tone.

Chief Defender Halgra looked on impassively as Team Ruby took their positions: Rohan as anchor, Liesel-Marie, Kytynna, and Nyym. Last, but not least, Ruby stood at the point. Her nervousness was obvious as she looked across at the smiling Rodrick Grath.

Once both had assembled on their respective sides of the the center line, Halgra motioned for two others to step forward. Each took their place next to a team. These were the drivers, the ones responsible for the insuring that their respective teams developed and maintained a constant rhythm during the pull, telling them when to pull, and when to "hang", or rest.

Team Ruby recognizes their driver as a man called Aodhán, who works as a bouncer at The Killin' Ground, Truanau's rough and tumble bar. The militia's driver, Brantos Calderon, is assistant to Tyari Varvatos, the matron of Sanctuary, the local temple.

Halgra spoke, Teams, pick up the rope. When both sides had done as she asked, the Chief Defender raised a hand, then dropped it to signal that the pull had begun.

The tug-of-war was underway, and the raucous Trunauans showed their enthusiasm for the game.

Militia Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
Because the militia won initiative this round, they get a +2 bonus to their Strength check, which your team can receive as well if you win initiative in any of the following rounds. They're taking 10, giving them a total of 19.

The teams began, and right from the onset, the militia showed their ability to function as a coordinated unit. With Brantos stalking alongside them, barking for them to pull for the glory of Trunau. Aodhán, meanwhile, was passionately urging Team Ruby to show their opponents the heart they possessed, for the sake of their captain, to show that she had chosen well.

Rohan was pulling with all his might, as you could see his feat dragging along the ground as the other team was pulling with such force. You could see his muscles rip from his arms, although not super strong he was athletically fit and the effort engorged his tiny muscles.

Unsure of the outcome he pulled every time Aodhan yelled the words pull, his thundering deep voice yelling out from the back.

"Ruby, Don't let them discourage you, we can take them"

Liesel-Marie starts taking deep breaths as the teams prepare to start. She almost seems to grow slightly, in fact. When the pulling begins, she unleashes a startling roar and her muscles stand out as she tries to pull the militiamen forward all by herself.

Unless there's an objection, I'm going to move on to the 2nd round.

As the pull began in earnest, both teams struggled to move the other toward the center line. Kytynna's hands nearly slipped off the rope, her arms burning from the exertion of the pull. And as the rest of the team toiled in an effort to compensate for the sudden and momentary slack, Rodrick and his men tried to take advantage.

The onlookers roared their approval as Aodhán got as close as he could to the elf and screamed at her. Don't you dare quit on me, knife-ears. Don't you dare quit on this team. Pull, dammit! Pull!

Rodrick's smile grew at the sight. He called back to the other members of his team. They've got no heart, men.

Brantos immediately barked at the militia. Don't slack off now! Put your backs into it! Have faith in one other and you will bring achieve victory. Now heave!

But that initial surge didn't last. For though they seemed uncoordinated in their efforts at first, Team Ruby had a couple of surprises in store for their rivals. The smug look on Rodrick's face changed, mirroring that of most in the crowd, at Liesel-Marie's sudden increase in both strength and mass, her feet digging small craters in the dirt. This along, with Nyym's action of dropping his elbows below his knees on the initial pull, added stability to Team Ruby, preventing them from being moved toward the center line.

Round 2 begins. Nyym, go ahead and make the initiative check for your team. I'll do the same for the other team.

Rohan smiled at the fact that there team couldn't pull them over the line nearly feeling evenly matched. He waited for the call of the second massive pull and than dived deep into the pull, tilting his entire body away from the the opposing team digging his feet into the ground, the feel of the earth around his feet was comforting. His face nearly turning red as he yanked with all his might.

Surprisingly his feet felt as if they were one with the ground, as he was able to hold his balance very well. A tall man now looked shorter then the rest of the group as his body was nearly sideways with the rope supporting him from falling to the ground. His slightly longer than shoulder length hair was nearly brushing the ground from his tilted support.

To whomever makes the Strength check, don't forget to include the +2 for Liesel-Marie's bloodrage. The temporary stalemate came to an end as Team Ruby took advantage of the militia's disarray. At Aodhán's insistent urging, they heaved and pulled as one, finding a rhythm that suited them and put their rivals at a disadvantage. Despite the best efforts of Brantos, the militia found themselves being slowly dragged toward the center line, their feet digging furrows into the dirt as they went.

Good job, team... You beat them this round, so they get pulled 5 feet. Kyt forgot to take into account the +6 you gained from the aid another checks, which would indeed put you at 27 for the Strength check. Had she gotten an 18 on the die, you would have pulled them 10 feet instead of 5.

Round 3 begins with Team Ruby maintaining the advantage... Rohan is up to roll initiative for your side. Since Kyt rolled the Strength check last round, Liesel-Marie should be the one to do it this round. This will be her third round of bloodrage.
