Zaphomil's healing burst closed the remaining wounds on his companions, even as they reduced the remaining solfugid to a twitching pile of shattered chitin and steaming meat. The smaller solfugids seemed to be distraught at the death of the larger ones, as they fled the area, streaming up onto the walls and ceiling, and into cracks and crevices. A few remained, but nothing like the crawling carpet of bugs from before.

With the immediate threat ended, you have the chance to look around the chamber, spotting another three tunnels leading outward, not counting the one you came in through. You also have the chance to take a closer look at the column of black stone, noting that the hollow inside the stone looks like the impression of a winged woman, and that the monolith was broken from the inside, as if something trapped within finally burst from its prison.

Angelica calls out, "Okay, no one touch that stone. I want to have a look and see if whatever trapped whoever was in there was.. well some sort of trap. First, I'm going to check around the area and let some of these nasty crawlies skitter off." That said, she systematically encircles the chamber, checking each off-shoot from this central cavern for clues. Lastly, she moves in to look at the stone.

Once Angelica had given the go ahead for the others to inspect the column, they descended, looking for clues as to its purpose and previous occupant.

Jakscar pointed out that, unlike the floor and walls of the cavern, and the external surfaces of the column itself, the inside of the column pieces seemed to be mostly clear of the secretions of the solfugids that seemed to make this chamber their home. His best guess was that the destruction occurred relatively recently, a few months, maybe. Certainly no more than a year.

Shabbezz and Harbug agreed that the winged shape could only have come from an outside, and given the voluptuous female form that it seemed to imply, and the hint of a tail, that it was probable that the prisoner was a succubus of some sort.

While the others inspected the monument, Angelica briefly scouted the other three tunnels leading from this place. They all had the feeling that they went on for a long way, like the tunnel you had just come through. None had any evidence of creatures traversing them, other than the ever-present brown crust that Angelica now knew to be solfugid excretions.

Is there any way to tell with my rolls if any of the tunnels had air flow, and any that didn't? Ideally, the lack of flow would allow me to suggest which ones led into the structure.

Angelica shrugs, "What do you got guys? All I have is icky bug guts all over my boots. Nothing quite telling me any coming or going through any of these tunnels."

Sorry for the drop in posting, I've been on a business trip.

Ever an admirer of the female form, Zaph becomes enraptured of the reverse-statue of the succubus and stares at it for some time. He pulls away when it becomes obvious the group is at a crossroads.

He says a brief prayer to Desna and spins his starknife on the ground. When it comes to rest, the point with a slight notch on it points 1d3 ⇒ 3 southeast.

He looks down the passage. "Of course, I'm not saying this will be where WE want to go, but I'm sure wherever it leads, it will be interesting."

Female Changeling "Varisian" Burglar 4/Fighter 2 (AC: 20 [T: 14 /F: 16] (+2 vs Traps); HP: 49/49; F+4, R+7 (+2 vs traps), W+1 (+2 vs Illusions/Fear); Init: +3; Perc: +16 [+18/+20], 60' darkvision)

Angelica considers the two options offered by the two men, "Well, boys, it seems we have a bit of an impasse. I could play the game, and suggest the third route, but I'm gonna be nice and say we go with Zaph's choice." She shrugs and looks toward Harbug, "No offense, Buggy, but given what we are planning here, any help from the gods is welcome."

"In my experience I've often found that it's best to leave it to the experts," Shabbezz says frankly. "In this situation, the proverbial coin toss of a priest of Desna is as close to an expert opinion as we're likely to get, barring a direct message from the deity of luck and travel herself. That, and I haven't any better ideas at the moment, so why not? I also vote that we follow Zaphomil's suggestion and head southeast. If nothing else we'll have the satisfaction of cursing him out later for goddess-bothering if it turns out badly."

"S' fine with me, I just didn't want to stand here getting crawled on." Harbug brushes a small bug off his leg.

Taking the hand of Desna's luck to be as good a sign as any, you began the trek down the long, dark tunnel. It wound downwards for quite a while before directing itself upwards once more. It seemed like an eternity, though was probably less than an hour before the tunnel leveled off again.

Ahead was a dim glow of light, and as you cautiously moved forward, you noticed that it wasn't the yellow-brown of a torch reflecting off natural stone. This was a cooler color. Approaching, you could see that the rough cave walls gave way to a chamber of worked stone, with walls of blue-veined white marble. The floor was polished to a high shine, and the ceiling supported by columns masterfully sculpted to depict voluptuous warrior women. Each wielded two-headed guisarmes, and the poses were both erotic and somehow menacing.

At the center of the chamber was a hole in the floor, a ten-foot square shaft leading down into the darkness below.

Being unable to see in the back of the winding tunnel, Shabbezz sidles past her companions until she can get a good look at the cave itself. The sculpted columns immediately grabbed her attention, and she strained her eyes to see if she could make out any meaning from them.

Angelica scowls at the setup, "Big holes in the floor are never good, especially when they aren't covered. It means that the hole itself isn't the danger, but maybe something in the hole."

If Angelica has the chance, she will try to stop Jaks from moving ahead of her.

Moving up to an angle where she can try to either see into, or listen toward the hole, Angelica tries to determine if anything is within without getting near enough to be pulled in somehow. Her somewhat irritated reprimand to avoid the hole gives away her position, as her rapier rattles against the wall when she's not paying attention. "Whiskers? Are you saying that I should use that weapon to look more like these statues? Do you think they are prettier than me?" She says with a baiting pout, the usual smirk hidden just barely behind it.

Barring any activity within the hole, she takes out a single coin of her smallest denomination, and tosses it into the hole to look for a reaction. "The hole goes down, aren't we trying to go up, into the statue?"

The room is finely worked, and there are no inscriptions or writing of any style. The female carvings on the columns are obviously of Thassilonian design, though, as they show scenes similar to those you found in the Irespan.

The hole itself looked to be a perfectly square shaft, dropping down far below anyone's ability to see in the dark, or even below the light of Zaphomil's spell. Angelica took out a copper coin and dropped it into the shaft, listening intently to see if it stirred up anything nasty. As she watched, the falling coin slowed to a near stop after only a dozen feet or so, then drifted slowly out of sight.

Jakscar ignores Angelica's attempts to keep him from the hole, so as the coin drops Jakscar watches it fall. As the coin slows and drifts he exclaims.
"Whoa, there appears to be some form of levitation magic at work here. I wonder if it will hold something heavier." Eying Harbug as a potential option, Jakscar scans the room for heavier items.

HP: 5/42, AC 19 t:13 ff:17, f+7 r+3w+8(+2vs illusions, +2 vs transmutations) Perc +12, init +1 Gnome Cleric of Desna 6

Zaphomil studies the pit, wondering to what mystery his goddess had led him. He casts light on another coin and drops it, letting the spell's illumination hopefully show what happens when it drifts away.

"I can fly for a few minutes," the cleric says. "Or I can bestow the ability on someone else. It doesn't last long, but it could let one of us explore this pit (or fly back up in case we all decide to go down). How much rope do we have?"

The glowing coin fell into the shaft, lighting up the square sides as it slowly drifted downwards. Looking on, Shabbezz guessed there was some sort of Featherfall-like effect in the shaft, slowing any falling object to a rate of about 60 feet per minute. Not too far below the entrance to the shaft, the light disappeared, with no sound of it hitting anything.

As everyone was looking down into the shaft, the columns moved. Where once there was four beautiful armed stone women standing straight and tall to hold up the ceiling, now there were four beautiful armed stone women advancing with weapons at the ready. Angelica, always watchful, spotted them and called out the warning, even as two of the statues moved to block the entrance. The other two, guisarmss at the ready, advanced on you.

In a flash, the grippli wizardess related all she knew of these creatures, for they could only be some form of caryatid column. Magical constructs of stone, they were immune to virtually all forms of magic, and their rock-hard bodies could shatter even the stoutest of weapons. In singles or even pairs, they were easily enough dealt with, as they moved relatively slowly and were poor on defense. In groups, and in a tight constrained space, however, they were absolutely deadly.

Shabbezz immediately relayed to the group out the information she had gleaned about their foes, then added, "So magic won't work (of course...), weapons will break, and four of them in a tight space is lethal. On the plus side, they're slow, and other than the aforementioned they have poor defense. So we need a plan of action, and quickly. Ideas? Can we use the environment, or at least find an escape route?"

Angelica moved quickly past the living statues, drawing attacks from both of them. Though they moved quickly for living stone, the burglar was far to agile for their blows to even come close to her. Jakscar, with thoughts of helping her, moved forward cautiously, weakly striking out with his sword. The nearest statue parried it aside with ease.

Meanwhile, Zaphimil took a few quick breaths and let himself fall backwards, feet first, into the pit. He had about the space of two breaths to marvel at the perfectly smooth marble walls before he was enveloped in complete darkness.

With Zaphomil's light spell gone, the chamber above was plunged into complete darkness. Jakscar, as the only member of the group above without the means to see in darkness, was blinded.

Zaphomil:

As you stepped into the shaft, you could feel the feather fall effect taking hold almost immediately. Then, the darkness washed over you. Your light spell was extinguished and there was nothing to do but fall slowly into the darkness.

You fell for what seemed like ages, but must have been less than a minute. Finally, you popped out of the shaft and fell the twenty-five feet to the floor of a vast, well-lit, worked stone chamber. Your flying ability kicked in just before you hit the floor, and you stared around in amazement at the room you had entered.

The ceiling, walls, and floor were made of smooth gray marble. Ornate columns esembling the ones in the chamber above rise to hold the ceiling aloft. A ten-foot square platform nestles against one wall, atop which lies a brilliant white sarcophagus with a painted lid. From the left, facing the sarcophagus, and around a turning hallway, you can hear the sound of gently running water.

Zaph, until the others join you, please put your posts in a GM spoiler

Since the fall took longer than he expected, Zaph feels a sense of urgency. He first looks around for threats. Thus he feels relatively sure this is the right direction for the moment, even though it's down. He flies as fast as the spell will take him back up through the shafts.

Basically, if there's no threat I fly back up.

Quick post, last day of travel.
As Zaphomil jumps down the hole, Harbug casts a light spell on his sword.

zaphomil:

Satisfied that there are no immediate threats, and that the well-built rooms offer far more promise than the natural caves above, Zaphomil flies back into the darkness of the shaft. Keeping one hand on the wall, it is the work of less than a minute before he popped out of the shaft to find his friends in a standoff against the statues.

With her magic effectively neutralized in this battle, casting a light spell on her staff to add to Harbug's is the most helpful action Shabbezz can think of.

I hope no one's waiting on me; I have the impression that there's at least two more rounds of combat before I pop back up. Let me know if I'm mistaken and I'll post something quick.

Yeah, waiting on the people up top to do something. Sick last week and busy this weekend, so I haven't pushed. Especially with people away

I did not realize we had more combat rounds before Zaphomil can return.

Magic won't work, and melee is suicidal for her, so after stowing her glowing quarter staff between her backpack straps, Shabbezz reaches for her little-used crossbow. It's either that or hide, and she still had some pride left.

Move action to sheathe the quarterstaff.

Move action to draw her crossbow.

I'm uncertain exactly on who we're waiting on from above. Are we just freeform, as in the statues are not acting unless we do something/go near them? Or should we be acting under initiative? If it's freeform, Angelica will just try to keep distracting the things if it keeps them from closing in on the others.

freeform is fine, as I never posted any kind of initiative round

It was a tense standoff. The statue appeared to be threatening to anyone that attempted to leave the room, but did not press their attacks. After a few minutes, Zaphomil came zooming back up out of the hole, hovering just above it.

"Everyone! It's safe! At least safer than here, and there's a way out! And more, you have to see it!" Zaphomil says excitedly as he pops up and sees with relief that thus far no one had been harmed by the statues. "Just drop down, but watch out, I think the magic cuts out about ten feet above the floor. Try to be ready for that."

He then turns back and dives back down into the pit, using the speed of his spell to reach the bottom as fast as possible.

Shabbez keeps a wary gaze on the statues, but stows away the crossbow and approaches the remaining party members. She removes a ring from one finger and holds it up.

"You heard the priest, it's a ten-foot drop near the bottom. One of you should take this ring of feather falling off my hands; I'm capable of slowing my own fall, so it will be put to better use."

Assuming someone takes the ring, Shabbezz then bounds over to the pit and jumps in, her webbed hands and feet spread wide to create drag.

I'm making use of my Glider racial trait (Halve falling distance, may move horizontally during fall half of vertical distance fallen,) for when the magic kicks out near the bottom.
