Harbug winces as the club slams into Jakscar. "Hey, uh, Zaphomil--that looks pretty bad. Anything you can do about it?" the orc looks perturbed, and mumbles in orcish.

Shabbezz winces as the latest blow connects.

"See, this is partially why I wanted to withdraw while we could still keep face..."

Angelica nervously thumbs the shard she carries, watching Jakscar get smacked around by the big boggard. She leans over to Shabbezz and asks, "Do we think they'll honor their word when this fight is over? I'm ready to use the shard as a distraction if we need to get away with Whiskers' tail between his legs."

Zaph, can you shard him (or us if need be) without being noticed? You have Haste right?

Zaph, you can try whatever you want, but you know good and well that most cultures would see any form of aid as cheating, and would likely void the challenge, and possibly end with all of you being attacked.

That last hit must have shaken the boggard a bit, as his return blow was off by a good distance. Still, Jakscar was hurting pretty badly. How much more damage could the boggard take? Would the catfolk be able to outlast his opponent?

Shabbezz keeps her eyes on the fight, but leans over to Angelica and speaks quietly.

"And therein lies the other reason I wanted to escape: we have no guarantee. Oaths are usually taken seriously by tribal societies, but these are boggards we're talking about. I may admittedly be somewhat biased by past history, but boggards are cruel bastards at the best of times. A bunch of outsiders show them up and they outnumber us? I don't have much faith in them taking that very kindly. I'm honestly sort of surprised that they didn't simply capture us as soon as the negotiations went south."

Jakscar - you would have no idea of knowing whether potions are allowed.

Jakscar's blade cut back across the boggard's face, temporarily blinding the frogman with a trickle of blood. The boggard champion tried to return the attack, but it was weakening. Jakscar easily avoided the blow.

Among the observers, the speaker looked nervous. Watching his champion sway, bleeding from a number of deep wounds, he croaked loudly.

Boggard:

"Enough! Stop this immediately. We will tell you of the strangers, and the paths they took, and you will leave this village, not to return."

Angelica winces a little and balks, "Buggy, unless you are trying to trick them into going after the trogs, the most we could likely get is that the Boggards bested their enemy. Zap's right, mainly we need them to show us more specifically how Oriana and her group got into the Lady's Light. With them in the lead, it could very well help us go faster by the obstacles being already removed." She smirks, then gives Harbug an appreciative look, "Maybe we can work out a little benefit. On Shabbezz's signal, Jakscar thrusts his blades into the earth and rests his hands on his knees whilst he sucks in a few deep breaths. Then straightening he approaches the large boggard with a hand outstretched in the universal gesture of respect between warriors.

"Thank the big bugger for me Shabbezz, he certainly gave me a run for my money. Next time I might leave the big one to you Harbug! It might also be worth asking if they know anything about inside, might as well get a heads up if we can."

Shabbezz listens to the suggestions of the group. Nodding in affirmation, she returns to the boggard leader.

Boggard:
"We have reached an accord. First, our warrior would like to extend his profound gratitude to your champion for the invigorating sparring match, and wishes him much honor and good fortune."

"Second, we wish to know where the woman called Oriana and her group has gone, what she has done to your people to your enmity, and specifically, how they had managed to get into the monument known as the Lady's Light, if that is indeed where that had actually gone? We would also like to know if you have knowledge of the interior of the monument, so we may be forewarned if we choose to travel there. Once our questions have been answered, we will be swiftly and peacefully on our way, and you shall never encounter any of us again."

"As a further show of good faith, we wish to impart some knowledge about your enemies, the troglodytes. We had encountered them recently, not on friendly terms, and it seems that something has significantly weakened their numbers. A strike against them now would likely be most advantageous, should one but choose to take the opportunity."

boggard:

"The Grey Lady and her companions went into the caves under the cliffs. The metal-wearing she-humans gave much weapons and magic items to aid the People in their war against the lizard-filth. But now, they are nowhere to be found, and the People have suffered from the lizard-filth's attacks. But not as much as the lizard-filth have suffered at the hands of the People!"

"The Grey Ladies went into the caves, there, where Daghop now lives, curse him. If he had not opposed our alliance with the she-humans, and taken a third of our best warriors with him, we would have thrashed the lizard-filth with much less harm to ourselves."

"We know nothing of the cave system beyond the initial few caverns. Something lives there that prey on People and lizard-filth alike. The People avoid the caves, as should all right minded beings."

"As for the lizard-filth, the troglodytes as you call them, we know where they live, and how badly they are injured. But their caves reek of lizard-filth stench, and we are content to let them wallow in their own filth for now. They will not bother the People for many moons."

"Go then, if you wish to follow the she-humans, to the caves there. Deal with Daghop and his web-lickers as you see fit. Do not set foot on People lands again."

After speaking with the boggard leader, Shabbezz tells the group that they should move on immediately and that she will explain along the way.

"...So that's what he said," she finishes, hiking her pack higher on her shoulders. "We need to head to the caves to follow after Oriana."

Didn't see the need to retype all of that. Assume that Shabbezz explained everything the chief said in detail to the party.

Smiling at Angelica's comment, Jakscar starts rubbing down his blades as they walk "I'll definitely take the lack of stench as a benefit and I'm ok, it would appear I have gotten a little used to having my opponent distracted as well, which I need to work on."

The trek up to the cliffs that the boggard had indicated wasn't too long, and it gave Jakscar time to stretch out his newly healed wounds. Every time you looked back at the village, you could see the bulbous eyes of the boggards watching you. Apparently, there was little trust here, and the creatures wanted to make sure that you left their valley.

Reaching the top of the trail, Angelica could see the cave opening. It was a fairly decent size, nearly fifteen feet across, and well-protected. It was easy to see why a tribe might want to use this as a base of operations. The only real wonder was why it had not been used before now.

Angelica snuck forward, followed by Jakscar. Surprisingly, the black cat managed to not give the burglar away as she peered around the stone outcrop. In the largish cavern beyond, she could see four boggards, equipped and outfitted for war. Unlike the boggards in the village, these looked ready for a fight, and all four were peering at towards the cave entrance. It was likely only the backlight that was keeping them from spotting the intruders. Other than the light spilling in from outside, the cave was entirely dark.

Angelica decides that, after running from trogs and Jaks having to duel just for the information that these were the 'bad boggards', it was time to revert to steel to get through. Looking at Jakscar, she makes many hand motions to indicate her intent. She points to herself, then the closest one to the north. Then she points to Jakscar and the closest one to the south. She nods, with raised eyebrows, hoping he gets her intentions.

GM, am I able to maintain stealth until a charge is resolved?

Seeing Angelica's signals, Jakscar replies by holding his hand up, before pointing to the door, she then sees him signal to those outside. Four fingers, then a thumbs down and pointing in the direction of the Boggard's with a chopping motion. Hoping his message got through Jakscar turns back, gives Angelica a thumbs up and begins to creep forward before quietly rushing the boggard mentioned, hoping that he will be a distraction Angelica can use.

The way I read this (and many many other discussions and abilities) is to view stealth as a reconnaissance skill, not a combat one.

Of course, if what you are really asking is if you could get a Sneak Attack in on the charge, I'd say that depends on if you go first in initiative or not. You won't get a surprise round, as they are clearly expecting some trouble, but you could catch them flatfooted if you are high enough in the init order.

As the blade slides into the boggard, Jakscar smiles, showing it his fangs whilst spinning his short sword in threatening strikes.

Angelica and Jakscar each charge one of the boggards, with Shabbezz's spell hitting one of the ones in the back. Each of the boggards took some damage, but not enough to deter them. Both Angelica and Jakscar gained an additional foe, and were hard pressed to defend themselves. Angelica took a crushing blow on her arm, nearly causing her to drop her weapon. Jakscar blocked one blow, but another slipped through and cracked him in the ribs.

Harbug rushes in at the end of the line of frogs to Angelica's side, swinging his falchion down through the armor and flesh of one of them. He let's loose a roar and then snarls at the other boggards.

Fang roars simultaneously with Harbug and pounces at the nearest boggard with her sinuous muscles bulging. She slips on a bit of wet moss on the cave floor, and so her mouth snaps shut in the boggard's face, perhaps giving it a scare, but doing no physical harm.

Charge to J-20 attacking boggards near Angelica; if Harbug finished the one in J-19, then Fang goes for the one in K-19, if not, she tries to finish the one Harbug attacked. Also, if Harbug reduced the first boggard to below 0 HP with his attack, and that boggard had at least 3 hit dice, it triggers Bond Forged in Blood (link) granting Harbug and Fang +2 morale bonus to attack and damage for 1 round. If this occured, Fang's attack and damage rolls here get an additional +2--let me know so I can mark it as an effect on Harbug and Fang for this round.

Bite, charge, maybe Bond Forged in Blood: 1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 4 + 2 = 7; Damage if hit, maybe Bond Forged in Blood: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8

Harbug raced in to help Angelica, with Fang close behind. With a powerful sweep of his falchion, Harbug killed the boggard to Angleica's right. The burglar dodged under the swing of the one to her left, distracting it. Fang leaped on the turning boggard, but the frog-man's movement through the cat off. Another pair of blue-white missiles coasted in to explode on one of the other boggards, while Zaphomil rushed in to heal his friends.

Suddenly, a roaring croak reverberated through the cavern, followed closely by another. The terrifyingly loud noise was enough to make even Zaphomil shake his head a little in terror. From around the far corner, a trio of giant frogs hopped, beckoned by the boggards' croaks.
