Sorry Bigrin, it was just the way you worded it sounded as if we would know if they spoke more languages with a knowledge check.

Angelica returns from her scouting to confirm that there seems to be a decent amount of them, and they are all staying in their huts. She somewhat disagrees with Zap, "We don't exactly know where the caves are, except at each village, and another with something that everyone avoids. We need to get past at least something to get into a cave. Sadly, I can't do the talking again, I don't speak the language." She shakes her head and muses, "I need to find me some sort of universal translator."

"We may need to rely on Shabbs to do the talking again. This time, we prepare for a fight, but if it goes well, we ask for information about the other group that went it."

Stowing his bow, Jakscar draws his blades, balancing them on his shoulders in a rather foppish casual way and starts to wander towards town, speaking over his shoulder as he goes.
"Come on then, might as well get started, can't see that they will pose that much of a threat."

Fang jumps off the orc's chest and quickly enlarges, letting a fangy-smile show momentarily as she licks her lips. The intent is clear--boggard frog legs sound delicious.

The walk down to the village wasn't hard, especially as you weren't trying to be stealthy. You wanted the locals to know you were coming, and not to startle any. The first boggard to poke its head out of a hut let out a loud croak, bringing more heads out. In moments, there were a dozen or more croaking frog-like humanoids, each easily three to four times larger than Shabezz. The grippli gulped as she saw the boggards, having not told the others of the fierce animosity the amphibian humanoids had for each other.

One croaked out a challenge in its croaking, gurgling voice.

boggard:

[b]"Leave now! No more outsiders are welcome here. Begone before we drive you off!

A number of the others raised various clubs and javelins.

Here's the map

Still facing the boggards with the rest of the party, Shabbezz looked back over her shoulder to translate in a whisper.

"He says 'Leave now! No more outsiders are welcome here. Begone before we drive you off!' I need a consensus here, quickly: how shall we respond? And keep your voices low, some of them might know Taldane."

This is likely going to be a Bluff, Diplomacy, or Intimidation check. I need to know what to say, and an aid another action if it can be managed.

I've got Dazzling Display which can demoralise all within 30ft on a successful intimidate check and doesn't require language (think the sword show from Indiana Jones!)

"Let me advance on my own and show them how I can wield my blades, a show of strength might make them more amenable. You could then translate for me. Either that or we play along as if we are associates of that Oriana woman, but that is Angelica's skills not mine.

"That's a nice idea, Jak. I wonder if letting them know we're only passing through will work? Why not start with, 'We follow Oriana?' It's technically true, since we're following her into the Lady's Light, but they may think we're allied with her."

I think if we're trying to make it look like we're with Oriana, we might need to use Bluff instead of Diplomacy. It's all the same to me, I have only -1 in each.

"Okay, here's how we'll play it: I'll start by claiming that we're with Oriana, and if they look unconvinced, let's have Jakscar use his display to prove that we're mighty warriors not to be trifled with."

She turns back to the boggards, puffing out her chest and mustering as much courage as she could gather.

Boggard:
"Hold! We are with Oriana, and are to be expected! Where is she? We are due to meet with her!"

Bluff: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (18) - 1 = 17 If someone else quickly performs a Bluff check as an aid another action, that's +2 for 19 total.

To aid in the deception, Angelica barks out a command, as a display of a powerful woman in charge, winking at the others first. "No! We tell them to show us how to find Oriana, and where the rest of her team went! We don't need to use force unless they don't realize who we're with."

It was apparently the wrong thing to say. As soon as the woman's name was beyond Shabbezz's lips, weapons were raised all around them.

Shabbezz quickly translates for the group:

"'We want no more outsiders here. They have caused us much pain and suffering. Leave now, or by the great toad, we will chase you from this place or allow our young to swim in your skulls!' I don't think that we're going to able to salvage this by diplomacy. Suggestions, please?"

Before answering, Zaph studies the boggards to see how they react to Jak's display. He's also suspicious of their claim of thirty warriors. He glances around for signs of that many individuals.

"I count less than twenty huts. Not sure if this village could hold that many warriors."

"I bet we could take Forty of 'em." the orc mumbles. "At least these might be worthwhile, unlike those wimpy, weak trogs."

Zaphomil doubted the numbers the boggard was quoting, but then, how could they know how many slept to a hut? What if the amphibians liked to sleep on top of one another in big piles? Or if there were more huts a little further away? Some of the ridge across the way looked like it might have caves. Maybe the numbers weren't too exaggerated.

As Jakscar twirled his blade, another boggard emerged from a nearby hut. How the massive frogman ever managed to get in the thing was a mystery. At seven feet tall, it towered over the other boggards, and even loomed over most of the party like an oak over a group of hawthorne shrubs. The wickedly spiked club it dragged behin him was made of bleached wood, with cords of wire wrapped around the head, bits of sharp stone wrapped carefully in the wire. The spokesman for the assembled boggards sneered at Jakscar, the expression on its froggy face clearly one of challenge.

Shabbezz raises an eyebrow at Harbug when the hulking boggard appears.

"You were saying...?"

To Jakscar and the rest of the group, she says:

"Alright, here's how I see this: we can tactically withdraw right now, or, if we're feeling particularly reckless, I can try to negotiate for single combat between Jakscar and their champion for the right to parley. I don't particularly like either option, but we seem to be stuck."

Yeah sorry, I did in my combat status, but forgot on my profile bar. Is Jakscar able to see if he is making any impact? May change his tactic.

The boggard is bleeding, but not really slowing any

AC:22,t:14,ff:18; f:6,r:7,w:0 (+1vs fear); Init:4; Per:9 Catfolk Fighter 5/Rogue (Rake) 1 (HP57/57)

Attack d sword: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (20) + 9 = 29
dmg d sword: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5

Attack S sword: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19
Dmg S sword: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6

Critical confirmation: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (18) + 9 = 27
Critical dmg: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4

Yay another critical hit, oh wait my damage dice were terrible again!

Again Jakscar's strike at boggard's armpit is frustrated and only scratches the creature.

Ouch. You're low on HP. Bigrin, is there any way I can surreptitiously heal him?
