Finding no traps or locks on the double doors, Angelica nods to Jakscar. The catfolk moves up to the doors and throws them open, revealing a large flooded chamber. Wide steps lead down into a wide pool of murky water, with an identical set of steps leading up out of the far side. Beyond those steps, a hallway continues out of sight. Columns rise from the pool to support the vaulted ceiling at regular intervals, each carved to look like a coiling tentacle. Mosaics on the walls depict scenes of ocean voyages, several of which are encounters with various sea hazards.
Jakscar Steelclaw |
"Have we seen any passages that might lead to the other side of this? Or shall we test the depth? "
Jakscar wanders up to the edge and tries to spot anything under the water.
Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14
Angelica Nenaviste |
Angelica holds a hand up to stop Jak before he does something stupid, "Whoa there, Whiskers! My main skill-set lies in finding the dangers hidden in those places that are made to look safe. There isn't anything wrong with checking first." Once again, she draws her rope and hook, and steps to the edge of the steps. Without walking on them, as steps are popular places for traps, she spins the rope and launches it to the other side. Then, as before, she drags it through the water to plumb the depths. As she does so, she looks over the place for any signs of danger.
Move to BL31, that should get her rope and hook across the pool.
Perception 1d20 + 8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 8 + 1 = 14
+1 vs traps, and +4 vs stone like creatures
DM Bigrin |
The hook sails across the pool, then bounces its way down the steps as Angelica draws it in. As she pulls it across the murky pool, she guesses that the water is no more than three feet deep or so. Easily wadable for the taller members of the party, though Zaphomil and Shabbezz were going to have to swim if not offered a ride.
Shabbezz Whorlpad |
"Er..." Shabbezz says, looking at the pool with some trepidation. "I suppose that I can swim across if it's really safe to do so (not that I'm much of a swimmer to begin with), but my concern is more that the contents of my pack and my spell component pouch will get waterlogged if I try to do so."
"I don't suppose that I could trouble one of you taller folk to carry them across for me?"
Harbug the Slasher |
"I'll get ya, Shabbezz." the orc offers "But tell me a joke while you ride. Heh."
Zaphomil Collander |
Zaphomil looks at the water somewhat resignedly. Desna teaches that the joy is to be found in the journey. Looks like I am destined to find joy in being waterlogged for a while. With a force of will, he smiles broadly. Then he plunges into the water and wades through effortlessly, almost as if the water wasn't there.
Angelica Nenaviste |
After realizing the water wasn't too deep that she couldn't wade it, Angelica recoils her rope and hook and stows them once again. "You know, if you were worried about keeping things dry, you could hang some of them off Buddy-Pal. With his sturdy frame, and extra leg, your stuff should stay dry." After the offer, she begins to cross, ready to return to her position as scout once on the other side.
Shabbezz Whorlpad |
"Thank you both for the offer, but I think that I'll take Harbug up on his proposition," the grippli says gratefully as she begins drawing up her pack for the ride.
"Now let's see, a joke, a joke... Oh! I remember one from my student days back in Quantium:"
"Late one night, a burglar broke into a wizard's tower and while he was sneaking around he heard a voice say, 'Sarenrae is watching you.'"
"He looked around and saw nothing."
"He kept on creeping, and again heard, 'Sarenrae is watching you.'"
"In a dark corner, he saw a cage with a parrot inside. The burglar asked the parrot, 'Was it you who said Sarenrae is watching me?'"
"The parrot replied, 'Yes, because it's true.'"
"Relieved, the burglar asked, 'What is your name?'"
"The parrot said, 'Abadar.'"
"The burglar said, 'That's a stupid name for a parrot. What idiot named you Abadar?'"
"The parrot answered, 'The same idiot that named the owlbear Sarenrae.'"
Harbug the Slasher |
The orc lets out a loud guffaw and smiles. "You've definitely earned a ride. Hop on. Just don't poke Fang, he doesn't like sharing." He crouches down for the wizard to climb on, then carefully stands so as not to dislodge the new passenger.
Harbug slowly steps into the water, taking an even pace as he crosses.
Jakscar Steelclaw |
"My apologies, my mind was elsewhere, otherwise I could have given sosomeone a lift. Ah well i will just have to keep you safe whilst encumbered with each other."
Jakscar will keep close to Harbug as they cross, so as to be on hand if needed.

Zaphomil waded into the murky water and as he made the last step, he wished he had not. The water was just a handsbreadth shallower than his impressive 3'4" height, and it was all he could do to keep his head above the water while walking on his toes. Even his innate ability to skip through the densest terrain was of little help. Everyone was trying so hard not to laugh at the little gnome, that he was the only one to spot the ripples moving towards the group, rather than splashing away as the ripples their motion was causing were doing.
He took a deep breath to shout a warning, but it was too late. Claws raked his legs and the water darkened with his blood. Angelica too felt a pair of clawed hands grabbing at her legs, trying to pull her under. She kept her feet, though her blood joined Zaph's in the pool. Jakscar's armor was all that preserved his legs, and as he leaned away from the attacker, he saw a hideous face with gills, tentacles, and a tripartate mouth leering up at him.
Zaphomil takes 3 damage and must make a DC12 Reflex save to keep his head above water.

Zaphomil and Harbug raced for the safety of dry land, with Shabbezz jumping from Harbug's shoulders as soon as the orc gained the steps. The grippli cast a minor spell at the sinpawn that Zaphomil had left behind, but the acid hit the water and was diluted before it could harm the creature. The sinspawn ignored Shabbezz, continuing to bear down on Zaphomil. One of its claws got through the gnome's flailing hands, and left another gash on his torso.
Harbug jabbed Jakscar's foe, opening a wide wound where shoulder met neck. Jakscar followed up with a well-aimed blow, sending the creature's head flying from its shoulders.
Angelica drove her claws in a crosswise swipe, cutting a set of deep gashes in the sinspawn's face and neck. The creature responded with claws of its own, cutting a gash in Angelica's left arm.

Zaphomil scurried back to get away from the sinspawn as Angelica and Harbug moved up. The witch managed to heal the rogue before she drove her rapier clean through the sinspawn. The creature blinked down at the bloody steel in surprise before trying to backhand Angelica, but the rogue easily ducked under the blow, steering the sinspawn aside with the blade still buried in its body. She turned the creature enough so that Shabbezz's magical missiles had an easy path to slam into the creature, rocking it backwards in a series of small explosions.
Meanwhile, Jakscar took Angelica's place fighting the remaining sinspawn. His sword banged of the tentacle column next to himn, though, and missed the creature. The sinspawn hissed, its oddly elongated jaws dripping water and saliva as it tried to claw down the catfolk. Jakscar took the blows on his armor, barely noticing them as he prepared his next attacks.

While the other party members are locked in battle, Shabbezz faces her own predicament: none of her useful memorized spells have the range to strike their targets, and the only way to get any closer is to swim the difference.
Resigned but determined, the grippli drops her backpack to the ground and makes sure her spell component pouch is fastened closed; it should be waterproof. DM Bigrin |
Looks like we got us some lollygaggers! That right boys? You gag on your lollies?"
Jakscar takes down his opponent with a well-times thrust of his sword, as Harbug moves in to support Angelica. The spear lancing over her shoulder didn't faze the burglar, though it did catch the sinspawn by surprise. The heavy blade tore into the creature's chest and left it bleeding heavily on the steps. The blood flow stopped quickly, though, as Harbug's thrust had torn out the creature's heart.
Shabbezz was prepared to swim, but saw the end of the combat. With as much dignity as she ould muster, she placed her pack back on her shoulders and waited for her Harbug-carriage to return.
To the west, a hallway led out, turning to the south after no more more than thirty feet.
Harbug the Slasher |
Harbug rinses his spear tip in the water as he returns to pick up Shabbezz. "I liked the joke a lot better than those sinspawn." he smiles at the grippli.
Once across the water and no longer carrying the wizard, he looks at the halfling. "You okay? Need a pick-me-up?"
Zaphomil Collander |
Who's a halfling? I happen to be a gnome, good sir!
Zaphomil tests his wounds, winces, then nods. Yes, if you're offering. I suppose it was inevitable something would be lurking in that water.
With that, the danger they had recently faced is forgotten and he looks ahead to the ongoing passage.

Shabbezz thanks Harbug for the second lift and joins the others near the entrance to the passage.
"Well, something else just tried to kill us. I choose to assume that means we are making progress."
