A foul omen looms in the sky over the scoundrel city of Riddleport, an ominous shadow that defies the light. Is it a curse laid millennia ago by forgotten mages? Does it forewarn against the return of some terrible foe? Or does it portend a terrible

"I'm afraid I won't be much better than Anklebiter with handling animals or riding. Can't we afford a cart, just a simple single horse one for carrying a few of us and our traveling gear to the camp? After the misery of that island we owe ourselves this small comfort." Kel opens her mouth to say more, but quickly closes it as her eyes focus on Calla's callouses and her cheeks flush with embarrassment. "Sorry, I'm not so soft that I can't walk and carry my gear." Her bottom lip protruding in a subconscious pout, Kel says no more on the cart.

"Coach, maybe?" Anklebiter says. "Good idea to me! Dog or horse no goes crazy, Kelendra healer-girl not falling off... Either that or get her military saddle and Goblin dog or wolf for Anklebiter."

The military saddle should help Kelendra's chances. I have no idea what a trained Goblin dog would cost, or if there would even be some for sale in Riddleport...

Calla huffs in annoyance.

"You two do know you need animals to PULL the cart, don't you? Unless, again, we hook it up to Lefrik."

Her lips rise as she finishes, her approximation of a smile at the -- possible? -- joke.

No goblin dogs available in Riddleport.

Kwava looked a little uncomfortable as the conversation moved to carts and carriages. "Well, you see, the road to Celwynvian isn't so much a road, per se, as a set of trails. A horse could make it through, easily enough, but nothing with wheels is likely to make the trip. That, or walking, perhaps, though that would take quite a bit longer"

Flex time: The hour of the wolf:
"Anklebiter not ride horse," the Goblin says, shuddering. "Not big nor small. Not dog, neither."
The little Wizard hops off of his chair and tugs on Lefrik's and Kelendra's arms.
"Charming friends comes with? Anklebiter knows shady-mans who sells... special animals. One good for Goblin, too."

Purchases made, and new mounts to hand, the morning of the leaving was crisp and cool. The map that Kwava had provided was a good rendition, and clearly marked out the areas of danger along the road, the relative quality of the trail, and the passphrases necessary to reach Crying Leaf without elven incident.

The lands to the north of Riddleport are sparsely populated, and within an hour of riding you pass beyond the few struggling farms and hunter's lodges. You are truly in the Varisian wilds by mid-morning, and the winding dirt road quickly becomes a Varisian caravan path - aka a wide game trail - winding north and east.

Lunch was eaten in the saddle, a cold repast of apples and cheese, with some hard bread and a few travel sausages. The simple fare was perfect for the day of travelling, and you felt a sense of contentment in your bellies, if not in your thighs and butts.

Shortly after noon, you rounded a bend in the trail to see a wagon in the road, one wheel obviously broken, and three people hastily tossing items around in the back. The figures - two men and a woman - had a hard look to them, though none were wearing obvious armor.

You are approximately 200 feet away

"Maybe I stay little bit back?" he suggests. "Travellers might get little bit nervous if they see a Goblin on wolf-back come riding up."

Calla stares hard at the people in the wagon as they drew closer. She sees signs of nervousness, of fear perhaps? Five well-armed and mounted strangers, one of whom is a goblin on a wolf, might engender such a response in even the most innocent of persons. Of course, Calla doesn't really believe in innocence, does she?

Kel stares at the people and sighs, wishing she they had already stopped for the night. Her thighs were aching from gripping the horse.

Anklebiter is too busy trying to keep his wolf from bounding off the trail after a rabbit to pay more than nervous attention to the strangers.

"Good idea, Anklebiter," Lefrik says. His weapon is not drawn, but clearly in sight. Best to let them know this is not a party that's lightly troubled.

At one hundred feet away, one of the men in the wagon called out, "We don't need no trouble, strangers. Got plenty of it already, and nothing of value. Not to the likes of you, anyways." The speaker is a lean man with a large jaw, missing teeth, and dark brown hair.

The other man is smaller, rounder, and resembles a mole, not for his vision but for the dirt caked on his shirt and trews. The woman slides behind the two men, and glares out at you. Her arms are crossed across her chest, and her square jaw juts out slightly. She looks much like the man who called out. None appear to be holding any weapons, though hands were on daggers as you drew closer.

"Lady, from where we sit, five heavily armed strangers is trouble, likely enough. If you say you ain't offering it, fine. But don't expect everyone to assume you're as clean as bees knees. That's a good way to get killed. And what's befell our wagon is a broken wheel. And the tools to take it off so's we can get a replacement ain't where they supposed to be!"

The rounder man cringed a bit and replied, "Look, Jace, I said I was sorry. I thought they were there."

"What we need is a new wheel, and I doubt you've got one of them stashed away. Still, thanks for asking. Not many people on the road these days, and those that are ain't always friendly," Jace said.

"If you folks're heading north more than few miles, be careful. There's something that moved into the area, been killing people and livestock. Turns 'em to stone. We skirted that place through another route, but none of these roads's made for a wagon. And some are right rough. How far to Riddleport from here?"

Jace smirked at Lefrik's words. "Just because we aren't pointing swords at you don't mean we're unarmed. Let's just say we're all glad you turned out to be friendly like. And I thank you for the offer, dwarf, but this little turd's gonna walk to Riddleport and bring us back a new wheel." Jace reached back and slapped the portly man on the back of the head.

"Oi, Jace!", Bruendor called to the portly man, hopping off his horse and fishing some paper and ink from his pack. "It'll probably be dark by the time you hit Riddleport. Head to the Golden Goblin for lodgin, and ask the dwarf there for a room. Show him this - it should get you decent lodging for affordable pricing." He swiftly writes a quick missive to the staff at the Goblin in Dwarven, stating that the bearer of this sheet gains a cut rate on a single room.

As the party rides away from the wrecked wagon, Anklebiter grins at Lefrik and Bruendor.

"Two good men, I see!" he says. "Very good. Much, much good. Ancestors be smiling in benevolence, I think!"

"That's right kind of you, to offer a room and to pay for it to. Shelyn's blessing be upon you, strangers."

As you ride away, you see Jace bite down on the gold coin and smile. Then, he cuffed the other man about the head and they started sifting through the bags and crates on the wagon once more.

The road continued to be poor, both narrow and rocky, and it was no wonder that the wagon had a busted wheel. Kwava had been right when he advised against wheeled travel.

An hour of difficult riding later, you turned a bend in the trail and saw an odd sight. A stone marker of a deer stood on the side of the road, sculpted to look as if the creature was leaping across the trail. At first, it seemed odd that such an exquisite carving should be out here in the middle of nowhere, and then you remembered the carter's words about a creature that turned things to stone.

Looking ahead, you saw more stone statues, some of which looked as if they had been licked or eaten to mere stumps, while others looked as if they would come to life at any moment.

Calla was the one who spotted the great beast. An enormous bull, almost as tall at the shoulder as Lefrik, and probably 6-8 times the size. It noticed the group at the same moment, tossing its head over its armored shoulder and preparing to charge!

Calla is up!

Of course, later the warning that he gave the gold for would prove to be dead on accurate:
