Anklebiter hisses when he sees the fate that has befallen Lefrik -- and by extension, Bruendor. He completely ignores the fact that his most recent attack completely missed the Drow; he whips a scroll out of its case and addresses Kelendra: "Please stand in front of me. It is bad thing I ask, but please, please shield me."

Without waiting for a reply, the Goblin starts droning the words written on the scroll. His eyelids lower as an expression of almost rapture slides over his branded face and his magic reaches outward... outward... beyond.

Anklebiter retrieves his last scroll of Summon Monster II and starts summoning an Octopus.

It is way better than a shark. ^^ I'm going to have to assume this cave somehow connects to the ocean... and it must be a pretty wide passage, too. Unless the evil Drow spellcaster summoned a fiendish orca, that is.

HP 150/155, AC 26/13/24, F +14, R +15, W +6, Init +2, Per +16 (+19 traps)

I don't know how I feel about that, Anklebiter. On the one hand, it's a fiendish orca. On the other, that's awfully damn metal.

As the last drow falls, Bruendor turns to congratulate Lefrik on their victory. He's puzzled as he watches his Ulfen friend blithely step off the platform and plummet into the water below. "Lefrik! What are you - oh." At last, he notes the chanting, and feels the bridge breaking beneath his feet. He scrambles for safety...

Reflex: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24

...and tumbles a few feet away, sliding away from the shattered part of the bridge. His eyes widen as he sees the black fin breach the water's surface, and he's already moving when he sees the orca tear into Lefrik. "Kill the caster, you three! Lefrik, I'm coming!!!" He races across the platforms, leaping off and diving into the water behind the killer whale.

Mechanics:

Not sure how high up that upper platform is, but it doesn't matter a whole lot to Bruendor right now either. I'm racing towards the edge at K12 and leaping off, trying to end up in J14. If I'm reading the Acrobatics rules right, that's a DC 5 to clear 5' and end up in the right square. Even with my -4 penalty for stubby dwarf legs, I automake that. Since I'm diving into water, I'm also making a DC 15 Acrobatics check to avoid taking damage altogether, assuming I meet the "minimum safe depth" for my fall.

Okay, getting conflicting signals all around about getting to a bridge, out of the water, or sticking around now that a certain dwarf is in danger too ;)

As soon as Lefrik feels the water strike him, he starts to realize something is...off here. Then the Orca rises up, and if he weren't berserk, he'd grin at the sight. The sea wolves are admirable creatures to many Ulfen...but, of course, they're admirable because they're dangerous.

As it proves by taking a large and bloody chunk out of him!

When his dwarf friend dives in to aid him, Lefrik's rage and loyalties are in agreement: Fight back.

A moonlight bridge joined the bank to the water near Lefrik as the barbarian struggled to hold his insides in, and not allow the orca to take any more of them. He slashed out at the killer whale and tore a large gash in its nose. The orca swam in a tight circle, coming up on the bleeding Lefrik and again biting into him, throwing him into the air. This time, it was the barbarian's right leg that exploded in pain and blood. It wouldn't take much more of this to completely incapacitate the warrior.

Bruendor landed with a splash beside the orca, glancing off its dorsal fin as he flailed through the air. The drow kept chanting, despite being hit by another chunk of falling timber, glaring at Calla the whole time. The inquisitor felt a command permeating her mind. A command to walk towards the drow and into the water.

Meanwhile, something is happening in the water. There is a swirl of light and colour in the depths, and something rises from the depths. Something with tentacles and round, googly eyes the colour of gold coins.
The celestial octopus cautiously eyes the ferocious orca -- and belches out a great cloud of ink, concealing both Lefrik and itself from sight to anything in the water.
With this initial cover in place, the Octopus immediately attacks the Orca, trying to latch onto it with beak and tentacles.

Anklebiter finishes casting Summon Monster II and summons a celestial Octopus to M13. It immediately releases its Ink Cloud as a free action to grant Lefrik concealment and hopefully confuse the Orca. The octopus then stealths over and attacks the Orca. There was a scramble to get a badly injured Lefrik out of the water, as he and Kelendra used the moonlight bridge to great effect. It snapped at the dwarf, but hte octopus ink cloud caused it to miss. Even so, Bruendor felt himself shoved roughly through the water.

A sparkling bridge rose from the water to provide an avenue of both safety and attack as Kelendra huddled and tried not to attract the sea wolf's attention. Lefrik charged up the ramp and at the drow female, who smiled in anticipation as she removed a flail from her belt. The female drow dodged Lefrik's strike, and sent one of her own in return. Lefrik barely managed to parry, the heavy weighted heads of the flail nearly tearing his axe from his grip.

In the water, Bruendor tried to use the octopus to help bolster his attacks, but the inky water made it difficult to see the orca between them. He finally just stabbed into the water near the dorsal fin and was rewarded with the feel of meaty resistance. The beast turned to snap at him, and Bruendor felt its teeth rake across his torso, but the fine links of the chain shirt he wore turned the serrated daggers away.

On the shore, the team didn't know where to help. The inky cloud in the water all but obscured the combat there. On the moonlight bridge, Lefrik himself was blocking most of the angles of attack. Finally, Anklebiter just tossed in a pea-sized ball of acid, jut to try and help out, while Calla's hastily fired shot buried itself in the ink-blacked water to no visible effect.

look: 1d100 ⇒ 33 do you see it? No you do not. Likely in the water.

"Grab the body and get out of the water!" Calla yells to her companions as she again casts her spell at the killer whale.

Ear-piercing scream (DC 14 Fort for half and no daze): 2d6 ⇒ (1, 6) = 7

Reacting at Calla's demand without thinking, Kel lunges toward the sinking body hoping to drag it back onto the bridge.

CMB check?: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6

Ignore the descriptive text here. The body is sunk. Armor will do that in water.

Half-Elf (Chelaxian) Female HP 109, AC 26/18/21, F +13*, R +11*, W +15*, Init +8, Per +22 Inquisitor 13

Stupid descriptive text! OK, kill the whale so we can get our loot back! :)

The body vanishing into the black water before she can lunge toward it, Kel grips her morningstar and waits to strike at the finned beast when it inevitably bursts from the water with a mouth full of sharp teeth. I know it's an orca, but I keep imaging the poster for Jaws

Bruendor continues to defend himself against the orca, swimming towards Kel's ephemeral bridge. "Lefrik, kill this thing before I'm fish food!"

Since the octopus has created total concealment in the water, I should be able to move towards the bridge without incurring an AoO. If that's the case, then I'm definitely doing that while in total defense. Otherwise, I'm just in total defense and treading water until I have a good shot at killing it again.

Swim: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13

Lefrik grumbled, well, growled more likely, "Lefrik get out of the water, Lefrik get in the water..."

Does the bridge dip into the water so he can have more solid footing as he slashes?

"Lefrik get Bruendor out of water?" Anklebiter suggests.

Lefrik tries to latch onto Brue and get him out of the water to safety.

Not sure what I should roll for that... is it automatic as I doubt he'll be wanting to dodge Lefrik?

mechanics:

1d20 + 16 ⇒ (17) + 16 = 33

Some cinematics here

As Bruendor strokes through the inky water, Lefrik slid down the moonlight bridge and reached out to grab the dwarf. The two locked wrists, and with a mighty heave Lefrik pulled the dwarf clear of the water. The two grinned at each other, though both were covered in blood diluted with inky sea water. Then, Bruendor saw Lefrik's eyes go wide. The dwarf turned as Kelendra screamed a warning.

The eight-ton orca breached the surface of the water with the speed of a bird in flight and slammed onto the bridge. Its sleek body knocked aside all who were using the bridge for support, sending everyone tumbling back into the water. Kelendra, who had been readying herself for a strike, never even got the chance as the huge creature crashed into her and sent her flying, along with the others. From the shore, Calla could only watch in horror as the orca bowled her companions over like blades of grass against the thresher.

Round 10:

Everyone (but Calla) got Bull-Rushed (basically) into the water!

Swim check 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (9) - 1 = 8. So I don't sink, but I don't move, either. That's special. >_<;

Goblins are fearless. Everyone knows this. Goblins are fearless to the point of insanity. But the trick is, Goblins are fearless like that because they do not really believe they can die; they have enormous amounts of confidence. As soon as a Goblin is actually injured in battle, a great many of them just scream and run from the battlefield.

Anklebiter is unlike many Goblins in that he is keenly aware that he might die. He has learned to deal with the fear by preparing as best he may.

There is no way to prepare for a giant aquatic mammal suddenly lunging out of the depths and smashing apart the bridge you are standing on. Even while he is bobbing to the surface, Anklebiter passes from relief through shrieking terror into some cold, tranquil überfear landscape beyond. Everything seems to be moving with the slow clarity of drifting snowflakes.

'I am in the water with a big meat-eater,' Anklebiter thinks, his thoughts apparently moving with the grace of glaciers. 'It is bigger than me, stronger than me, and actually born to live in the water. My friends are here with me, but none of them is born to live in the water. Maybe I should scream now. Screaming would feel good.'

Then Anklebiter notices who is closest to him in the water: Kelendra.

The glacial landscape of terror trembles and shatters. Spluttering, Anklebiter latches onto the Half-Elf and tries to push her behind him while he chants Words of Power: "Scutum superiorum tollo!" A shimmering oval of force appears before the Goblin, and he grimly wills it between him and the rampaging orca!

Anklebiter casts Extended Shield and tries to manoeuvre himself between Kelendra and the killer whale.

While Anklebiter struggles with his fear, Minky has no such problems. Shrieking, she clambers to the top of her Wizard's head and executes a daring leap for safety!

Acrobatics 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (11) + 10 = 21 and Climb if necessary: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (1) + 10 = 11. Note Minky is trying to leap away from where she last saw the big black-and-white killing thing and towards anything that looks like terra firma within her reach.

Lefrik is forced to change tactics, taking his great axe and slashing at the Orca with it. This beast wants them dead it seems, greedy thing. It's not as bright as most sea wolves he's heard of, but it certainly is just as deadly.

To hit: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (1) + 11 = 12

Can I tell if my spells are having any effect? Is it thrashing or anything? It doesn't seem like it's making saves... If not, I'll use my bow this round instead...

Calla grinds her teeth as she sees her companions end up back in the water.

"By Calistria's sting, I'm not hauling all of your bodies back to Riddleport or even Zincher's camp on my own," she mutters as she casts a now-familiar spell for a third time at the whale.
