Bruendor reached in with his axe and lifted the mostly splintered locking bar just before Bruendor hit the door with a mighty crash. The thug inside, reaching to slash at Lefrik's arm with a shortsword, was hit by the flying door and stumbled backwards. Bruendor's motion carried him into the room, Lefrik close behind.

Here is the map. You came in at the back door, near the kitchens. The alcove entrance to the kitchens is open, showing a glimpse of at least one more thug in there. The door to the stairs is closed.

Bruendor stepped towards the eastern door, thrusting his rapier at the thug before him, a snarl upon his lips.

Calla pulls another arrow and send it flying toward the thug again, cursing as she again misses badly in her efforts to avoid hitting her own companions.

Anklebiter scuttles close behind Lefrik - "No stepping back on Goblin!" - and sights between both the noble Ulfen's legs and those of the grim Bruendor. "Stilla acida!" Anklebiter chants, and he lets fly a spell at the thug's legs.

Anklebiter moves to C6 and tries to fire an Acid Splash at thuggo without hitting any of his teammates. If this is not possible, then this post never happened! ;) Ranged touch attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22 for 1d3 ⇒ 3 damage.

Kel casts Bless while everyone is still gathered close. She then moves to the outer doorway, ready to follow Lefrik when he moves through the interior door.

Lefrik chuckles at the goblin's comment and pushes forward and slashes at the first thug to be unfortunate enough to be in his way.

The first defender is easily bowled over as the companions flatten him with spell and steel. The man from the kitchen ran to the kitchen door and tried to hack at Lefrik, but the swinging door caught his arm and knocked his arm aside. Another man burst into the kitchen from the gambling hall, and shouts can be heard from all corners of the goblin.

Round 2

Following Lefrik and ready to heal as needed, Kel shouts into the Goblin, "Our offer still stands, join us against Saul's treachery and share in his gold!"


Bruendor throws open the door right into the face of a very surprised archer. The door bloodies the archer's nose, who drops his bow as he grasped for his sword.

Lefrik's wild blow missed the thug by a good margin, but the man's safety was short-lived as Calla's arrow took him in the throat. The man fell with a gurgle, opening the way to the kitchens beyond. Another charged Lefrik from around the pot rack, sword flashing in enthusiastic but not very skillful sweeps.

the screams and shouts from those downstairs caused a flurry of response upstairs. Feet pounded on catwalks and floors as more bodies above ran to the source of the incursion.

"Working on it!", Bruendor snarled back to Lefrik. He threw open the door on his right, and started down the hallway towards the feet. "Anklebiter, you're with me! Calla, rear guard! By the Father of Creation, Lefrik, hammer them!"

Kel stays beside Lefrik, ready to apply healing or smack something with her morningstar, should the opportunity present itself.


Lefrik's blow cleaved through his opponent as if through paper, tearing a huge slash in the man's chest. The thug hit the floor with nary a whimper of pain and bled out at the barbarian's feet. Calla's arrow streaked past Bruendor into the face of the very surprised archer. The shaft sent the man spinning and Bruendor, Anklebiter, and Calla pounded through the hallway to the door that led upstairs. Running footsteps told them that someone was coming down the stairs on the other side of the door.

With Lefrik's foe taken care of, the kitchen area appears to be free of foes for the moment.

Calla follows Anklebiter and Bruendor upstairs, another arrow fitted to her bow should anymore former allies decide to attack.


Bruendor throws the door open and lunges, almost blindly. His rapier takes the man on the other side high in the chest, piercing a major artery and staggering the man. Anklebiter's spell finished him off, and the man's dying cries caused the thundering footsteps above to falter slightly.

Lefrik sees no one else in the kitchen, and no sign that the stairs leading down into the fighting pit are occupied.

Bruendor shoves the man's body off of his rapier and lets him fall to the ground. Stepping over him, he pulled his loaded crossbow and headed towards the staircase. Up the stairs he went, searching for another threat to stab or, should it be too far to reach, shoot.

Move to H13. I think that will put me at the catwalks at that point. If I see a thug, I'll shoot or stab him as appropriate.

Bruendor and company rushed up the stairs, and the dwarf slammed the door to the catwalks open. A pair of arrows embedded themselves in the door, as the archers up there snapped off hasty shots. Bruendor's aim was better, and one of the archer fell with an arrow through his lung.

Downstairs, all was quiet as Lefrik and Kelendra placed themselves to cover all entrances to the kitchen area. In silence, Kurava set himself up to be able to cover all entrances with his bow.

"Well, here I am again, standing guard in the goblin," Lefrik says drily, he looks around the place, and asks the elf, "Any opinions? If you're going to risk dying by our side, I'd say you have a say as well."

Bruendor rushed onto the catwalks, rushing onto them to the right. He stabbed his rapier into the wood, leaving it wobbling in the board, freeing his hands to reload his crossbow. "Offer's changed, boys," he shouted to the two thugs. "You all had your shot at Saul's money. Now you just get to leave with your lives if you surrender. Drop your bows over the side, and no more of you need die tonight. Keep fighting for that traitorious goat, and you leave this place horizontally. The choice is yours!"

Mechanics:

Move to J10 upstairs.
"Drop" my rapier. The stabbing is just flavor text.
Reload my crossbow.
Give the thugs some food for thought.

"Little persuasion for your bones!" Anklebiter shrills, and then he takes a step forward and chants a spell: "Sagittae magicae, omne errore vacuae!"

Two bolts of energy fly away from the Goblin, each impacting with one of the archers.

Anklebiter casts Magic Missile. The Impressionable Adept trait gives him +1 caster level for this spell, allowing him to produce two missiles instead of one. So that's 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2 force damage for the archer at O9, and 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2 damage for the archer at R13.

Demoralize: You can use this skill to cause an opponent to become shaken for a number of rounds. The DC of this check is equal to 10 + the target's Hit Dice + the target's Wisdom modifier. If you are successful, the target is shaken for 1 round.


Looking dow, those on the catwalk can see one large humanoid shape still near the front doors. The rest of the gambling hall area appears to be clear.

Lefrik hears nothing on the other side of the door leading to the gambling hall, but can hear the shouts of Bruendor and the others echoing faintly from the stairs behind him. The archers above react to Bruendor and Calla the same way they have been behaving, ignoring all their words and launching a pair of arrows at them. The arrows flew harmlessly wide, and left the archers hideously exposed to the companions' counterattacks.

"'Ware," she yells out, hoping Lefrik and Kelendra can hear her. "Something large lurks on the other side of the door!"

At the shout of warning from Calla, Kel grabs hold of Lefrik's sleeve.

"Leave it, we're better attacking that thing from above, let's join our friends on the catwalks." Kel stays with Lerfrik, but motions towards the catwalks, ready to move.

sorry, didn't realize you were waiting on me, Kel will stay with Lefrik throughout the encounter, ready to heal whenever he takes damage.

For movement this round, assuming we can use the door between Lefrik and Kel and we do join the others, Kel will spend a move action opening the door, let Lerfrik lead the way, then she will spend a second move action to follow him

Anklebiter's spell took his target in the throat, sending the man falling to the catwalk floor. Only the low railing kept his body from tumbling over and through the gauze below. Calla's arrow took the other archer, killing him easily. The catwalks were clear, and only the companions were left standing.

Below, Lefrik and Kelnedra were just about to push through the doors to the stairwell when 3 thugs burst into the room from different doorways. Kurava caught one with an arrow, but it barely slowed the man down. The largest, an ugly brute nearly 7 feet tall and weighing almost 300 pounds, swung at Lefrik with a morningstar held in both hands. Against the slab of muscled flesh, the weapon looked more like a toy, but the spiked and weighted end whistled menacingly as the large man swung at the barbarian. Lefrik dodged the low, and the air pushed against his cheek as the morningstar swept past.
