kitchen crew:

Mellios didn't take much in the way of convincing to begin her wild tales of lurid intrigue and petty thefts. Most of her information was completely useless for your purposes, other than pure entertainment value. however, some hints she dropped about the goings on at the nobles' level made you realize that you would have to climb the servitors' ranks if you wanted access to the areas where your questions would likely be answered.

guards:

Your fellow guardsmen, Covakis being the sole exception, weren't exactly forthcoming on stories and gossip. The surface dwelling guardsmen's prime entertainment vehicles of scuttlebutt and complaints seemed all but invisible here. The guards were a taciturn lot, doing little outside of their duties other than sleep, a few card games, and watching the tortures of slaves, miscreants, and captured spies. Covakis was the exception, as he truly enjoyed talking, and would happily chatter away unless Paingiver or the tongueless Disakev were about. Reading between what he said, the best ways of learning details about the House and its politics was to climb the ladder within the House Guard to be assigned work guarding the nobles of the House.

Arca goes to demonstrate Magpie to Undamesta.

"Please allow me to explain," he says in his smoothest voice. "Homunculi like this one offer numerous advantages. I understood from your discussion with Paingiver that the recent conscription leaves the House shorter of security staff than you might like. If you will provide me with the necessary resources, I can set one or two homunculi at every access point to the House or even further out, and they will remain there. Even if I need rest, they are unsleeping. Needing no food or drink. Incapable of being bored. Impossible to bribe. Easy enough to disguise as decorations. Stealthy by nature. With superior intelligence, we can coordinate what troops there are with superior efficiency, and the chances of being outmanoeuvred drop sharply.

The homunculi's usefulness as a security grid against external threats need not be their only application, either! For slightly more expense, I can give them voices as Drow have voices, so they can pass messages throughout the House as quickly as those same messages are delivered to them -- and again, they can not be bribed, can not be intimidated. Place a homunculus in every important room, and I can coordinate any in-House military actions needed, guiding troops to outflank and annihilate intruders, calling personnel together without the need to spare messengers to go find them, coordinate slaves... anything. In essence, they can be an in-House communications network -- and if needed, an in-House security grid against treachery, should you find this needful.

And there are even further applications. I could make homunculi to serve a plethora of purposes, given the tools I need! Some we could market, to supplement the House's coffers. Others we would keep solely for the use and convenience of this House. Of course..." Arca casts an almost coy look and smile at Undamesta. "... I would be happy to do all of this and more for the House that shelters and provides for my family. And which supports and encourages our efforts to help the House? Why, with the support of the House, my sisters and I could create even more useful things! For instance... have you ever heard of a Graven Guardian? Such a thing would make a worthy addition to the House's... overburdened security forces, would it not?"

Drow ambition, a-go-go...

Quevven chuckles at Mellios' stories, listening for anything at all that might seem useful, but clearly a scullery assistant wasn't going to be learning much of anything useful. Seems we'll need to prove ourselves useful to someone within the House. How to distinguish ourselves without drawing attention? That's the question.

Arca:

"And what assurances do I have that this spy network remains under the sole control of House Vonnarc? What reason do I have to trust that a lowly House Guard of less than a week, one who was completely unknown to this House before that time, would keep the secrets gained from this clandestine force solely to the House? Can you build in restrictions that they stay on the property? That they answer only to a noble of the House, and not to you? Ensure that their construct loyalty is solely to the nobles of the House?"

"No, I think not. Not at this time at any rate. I will speak with the First Daughter about all this, and then only after you have proven your loyalty to House Vonarc beyond all doubt. This one will stay in your rooms at all times. If it is seen anywhere else, other than under strict command of a noble of this house, it will be destroyed and you will be flogged. Dismissed!"

Don't despair. It was a good plan

"As you command, Madame," Arca says in a smooth tone of voice, bowing his head. "Though I regret my little Magpie will not be helping me guard, which was part of my intention in making her, I shall obey your ruling with all due diligence. I humbly await the ruling of the First Daughter in this matter."

Arca makes a brief stop at the group's quarters, where he releases Magpie and gives her orders to Wait for me here before hurrying to take his shift with the guards.

Up on the battlements, the Drow Wizard does his best to keep lookout for anything unusual or important... and to keep his thoughts from straying into glorious dreams of a cloud of homunculi, spying and reporting to him... and a Graven Guardian to mow down the nobles of House Vonnarc.

Magpie flutters around the group's quarters, not looking for an exit Wait for me here but so she can memorize the configuration of the space. She devotes her observations to memory -- her observations, and the impressions from Master's activities elsewhere that she picks up on; snatches of thought and memory he allows to slip through to her. Memories of an ancient forest and the ruins of an even older city; that was the past. Images of a stretch of this dark, ghoulish Ghoulish? Ghoulish city he has to keep watch on; that is the present.

Magpie has no reference for ghoulish, other than what she reads in Master's mind. But she gets the idea that it's bad. This whole place is bad, because Master believes it is so, and Master cannot be wrong.

She also has no reference for the idea of a multitude like her glorious dreams of a cloud of homunculi nor of the elder sister Master is planning to rebuild Duchess but they send shivers of happiness through Master's mind. So they must be good things.

Here and now is neither good things, nor bad things. Here and now is not boring, because Magpie cannot be bored. Master remarked on this to the female who is not a friend Slavemother Undamesta and she knows it to be so. Still, here and now threatens to be inactive, no stated duties to perform. Just Wait here for me is clear enough, but she wants to do more, to be useful.
After brief internal debate, she formulates an idea and projects it at Master's mind. A brief stab of amusement, then permission.
The homunculus finds a bit of rag... and starts to tidy up around the group's quarters as best her physique allows. Another memory from Master, another one of Duchess and she nods in silent agreement: 'Usefulness if purpose.'

The days began to blend into monotony as you moved from one duty to another. You made contacts as you did, learning more about the House and how it was run. By utilizing small favors and some decent wordsmithing, each of you made a good rapport with at least a few people in the House, though none of tremendous significance.

Anklebiter - Arca, he must remember to think of himself as Arca - made perhaps the most progress towards learning more about the goals of the surface raid, when he was summarily removed from the Guards and established as Neskir's assistant. After a few days of menial chores within the lab, and some basic scribing, Neskir was delighted to have someone of Arca's caliber to work with. Trust was not an easy thing to build among drow, and Arca could tell that there was a lot that the noble drow wasn't telling him, but it was a step in the right direction.

Calla, however, failed miserably. It wasn't that she wasn't suited for the house guards. It was that she was trying too hard to get the other guards to talk. They were a suspicious lot, and after the third day of complaints, she was brought up before Paingiver, who had a nasty look on his face. He demanded to know who she was spying for, and how she got into his guards to begin with. Talking quickly, she managed to convince him of her innocence - for now - but was flogged 10 strokes. There was nothing she could do, other than take her punishment and heal herself afterward. After that, she managed to serve well enough as a door guard for her to be given some leeway within the House once more.

Bruendor stayed in the kitchen, continuing to do good work there, while Kelendra moved into the ranks of the house maids. She tidied, carried laundry, and was responsible for making sure that the floors were scrubbed by the slaves on a regular basis. Especially the "entertainment" rooms. Despite the black coloring of the granite floors, blood stained everything, and even the smallest speck of blood would begin to smell eventually. So, she worked with Verez, a scarred troglodyte who was in charge of the slaves. His attitude was friendly enough, and she thought that he might make a good information source. After all, who cares what a slave overhears? They aren't people, after all.

2 weeks done, and you are learning the ropes. Anklebiter, Bruendor, and Kelendra have made good strides towards advancing in the servant ranks. Lefrik and Calla...not so much.

Arca makes a habit of devoting a little time every day to his sculpting after work is done. One day, after the official laboratory work is done, Arca approaches Neskir. (Can I know a bit more about Neskir? Man or woman? Old or young?)

"Good Neskir" - a brief smile at the humour of the appellation - "I hope I have given good service, and I was wondering: might we have some room for... experimentation? I am mindful of Slavemother Undamesta's orders, truly I am, but there are surely things we could do to push the limits of the craft without violating those. For instance, have you ever considered the possibilities inherent in a clock imbued with some simple spells to make it wake or otherwise alert the owner with specific messages? Harmless to the House, yet an interesting area to experiment with and potentially a nice little money-earner. Of course, if our agenda is too full...?"

Diplomacy 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22

Arca:

Neskir Vonnarc is a lesser noble of House Vonnarc, being the Matron Mother's fourth born son. He is a wizard of moderate talent, still in training at the wizard academy at Tower Solacas. His arrogance far outstrips his talent, which Anklebiter can tell immediately, given that the goblin has a much better grasp on arcane theory than the drow himself does.

Throughout this week, each of you has felt like you were under observation. It was nothing overt, maybe a shadow that disappeared when you looked directly at it, or perhaps that prickling feeling on the back of your neck so reminiscent of a blade laying there ever so gently. Still, Gadak, who you hadn't seen much of since you started your service with the house, started showing up in odd places, asking you how things were going.

She was fairly used to her master's movements by now - and those of his companions - and none of them should be back in the rooms for at least another hour. The drow opening the door was unfamiliar to her, but she picked out his image from among her master's memories.
