Growling as her injuries grow, Calla calls on her goddess' spite to infuse her bow, and fires two of her cold iron arrows toward Novelniss, smiling mirthlessly when both slam home in the dark elf's chest.
"Your long days are coming to an end, drow!" she spits out at him in Undercommon.

Kelendra rushed forward to heal Lefrik as Anklebiter summoned his flying mount and took to the air. The goblin cursed as he tried to dispel the wizard's flight spell...and failed. Lefrik decided to climb the nearest telescope to get up to Nolveniss' level. Unfortunately for him, the last person to use the telescope had not locked the gearing in place. As the barbarian mounted the top of the scope, it swung wildly, dangling him over the side of the balcony, looking down to a sixty foot drop to the roof of the main building below!
Bruendor, seeing his friend fall, loosed an arrow that went wildly far from Nolveniss, but Calla was too focused on her target. For the first time since the battle began, she was faced with a single target, and she shot a pair of arrows at it. Both struck the wizard in the chest, causing him to lose his concentration. The dying form struck the stone of the tower roof with bone-snapping force, and the battle was over.
Lefrik needs to make me a DC15 climb check (no taking 10) or fall from the swinging telescope. Failure by 5 or less lets him cling to the scope without making any progress. Continue rolling until you either make the DC15 save, or get less than 10, which means you fall...likely to your death
Bruendor Cavescouter |
Bruendor sighs momentarily as Calla's arrows finally strike home in Nolveniss' chest, but his eyes widen as he hears a metallic grinding sound, watching Lefrik swing out over the tower's precipice. "NO! Lefrik, hold on!" He races over to the tower's edge, tossing aside his useless crossbow.
A few options here. I've got a ring of feather fall, as well as the slippers of spider climb. The slippers are probably going to be impossible for Lef to put on right now, but the ring has potential. Is it possible for me to remove my ring and toss it to Lef, and have him put it on before he plummets to his doom? It sounds like Lef needs to make at least one roll. OH! Kel, can you make a moonlight bridge for Lef to fall onto?
DM Bigrin |
You have 1 round of actions available to you. Catching the ring would require that Lefrik let go of the telescope with at least one hand, catch the ring, and put it on before he hit the roof below. Reflex save to catch the ring, and a Climb check if he is trying to hang on one-handed. It would make a cool story if it worked, though :D
Anklebiter the Insane |
Or jump off, AB, and have the bat fly under Lefrik. Longer post soon. Don't throw the ring away...
The problem is, I need to communicate my will to the bat. If I jump off, that gets... harder. It's Celestial, but not smarter than an average dire bat. :-/
DM Bigrin |
Anklebiter, Calla - Had this conversation many times, and people keep forgetting that you cannot control summoned monsters unless you can communicate with them. A bat is untrained as a mount, so any action other than attack requires a ride check, and you certainly can't direct them to do something as complex as "rescue someone", unless of course you can speak with animals.
Bruendor - With 15 Str, your max load is 200, which is less than Lefrik and his gear. As per the featherfall spell that means you would be either unable to hold onto him, or you both would fall.

Yeah, I figured as much. ^^; So, is the bat strong enough to carry both Lefrik and myself?
Anklebiter the Insane |
Anklebiter hurriedly ties his rope around the bat's neck and drops the loose end down to the others.
"Tie it to the telescope!" he shouts.
Best I can do right now. If someone can tie the rope to the telescope, I can pull it back in.

Kel moves forward and a shimmering bridge begins stretching from her feet. Each brick of pure moonlight clacks into place as the road builds itself below the dangling barbarian. With a smile of relief she teases the blonde man. "Lefrik, that's the wrong end of the telescope, you're suppose to look through this side."
Calumny "Calla" Tas'vere |
Calla smirks as she feels her goddess' power fading and observes her shots.
"I did warn him," she says haughtily, calmly watching as her companions scurry to help Lefrik.
"Now, let's see if we can figure out how to get out of this place."
She begins searching the room, reclaiming any arrows that survived the fight.

"When I am older, and have sons to tell of my saga... assuming I live to begat, I ask none of you tell them of this," The Ulfen says with profound embarrassment as he drops down onto the moonlight bridge.
Still battered and wounded badly, he walks down it and gives the oracle a grateful one armed hug.
DM Bigrin |
Seeing that his friend was safe and returned to the observatory roof, Bruendor smiled and turned to his normal post-victory celebration. Rummaging through the clothing and effects of the three wizards, he compiled quite a large collection of high-value or high-interest items. He then motioned for Calla to scan the bodies for any magical items he might have missed. In all, the pile of goods was quite large, and the pouches of gems and coins quite heavy.
Common magical items are easy to identify, and will be auto-identified from now on.
Anklebiter the Insane |
Anklebiter lands the dire bat and dismounts.
"Fly back into Desna's night skies with my thanks - but without my rope," he tells the creature, which fades back to its home realm.
"We survive to win again," Anklebiter says to the others, grinning a wide Goblin grin. "Hooray us! Now let's find the remaining Elves, loot this dump and get out of here before the remaining Drow and demons rally."

Spellcraft (gemstone, if it's magical): 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (6) + 11 = 17
Spellcraft (anything else): 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (4) + 11 = 15
"Agreed. The sooner we can get back to our time and world, the better."
DM Bigrin |
Looking at the staff, Calla points out a few things that make her certain that is it a Staff of Dark Flame, with 14 charges remaining in it. The gemstone is large, almost the size of Anklebiter's fist. Anklebiter can read the rune, or at least he thinks he can. It is a variant of the word "portal".
I'll update the loot spreadsheet tonight
Bruendor Cavescouter |
So, PF staves only have 10 charges maximum, as opposed to the 50 in 3.5. The staff is currently at 28% capacity, which is as close to 30% as to make no difference. So it should probably only have 3 charges in it at the moment.
Anklebiter the Insane |
"Of course we're not abandoning the Elves! Let's get back to Shalelu, find out where any other surviving Elves are, then head for the gate. Search Nolveniss again to make sure he isn't hiding more conventional keys and off we go."

You made your way downstairs to find Shalelu and Kaerishiel once more clad in their armor and carrying their weapons, though the male ranger seems to be barely able to stand on his own. Shalelu started to say something, but an eerie whistling sound filled the air.
You rushed out of the building to the the blot above filling almost the entire sky, from horizon to horizon. Boiling atmosphere rolled away from the...thing that plummeted downwards, growing bigger as you gaped. one thing was clear, the Armageddon Echo was about to live up to its name!
As the roiling sky seemed to get close enough to touch, each of you felt a sensation in your middles, as if a giant fishhook had reached into your innards and fastened well before jerking you into another plane. The sensation was extremely unpleasant, enough so that even holding your last meal in became nearly impossible. Your vision grew gray and dark...
...before you were blasted back into the portal room in the Academy of Arts. You landed in a heap, Kaerishiel and Shalelu unconscious once more, on the blood-stained floor of the room that you visited not so long ago. The fist-sized garnet in Anklebiter's hand was so warm to the touch that the little goblin bounced it back and forth from hand to hand, blowing on his scorched fingers. The portal itself was simply blank stone, not the eerie smoky vision of the past that you remember from your first time here.
Anklebiter the Insane |
"It would seem... that this stone is indeed the key. Or was," Anklebiter says. "Kelendra, may I have some water? Want to look my best when we go back to camp. It feels like we were in the Echo for months..."
Anklebiter shakes himself, then levers himself to his feet with his new staff.
"Such a price... To think we only managed to get Shalelu and Kaerishiel out! But at least we have beheaded the serpent infesting these ruins, yes?"
Anklebiter the Insane |
"We got out when the Echo came to its end because we had the key, I think. I will study it later."
Bruendor Cavescouter |
"Yes, later," Bruendor says, slowly rising from the stone floor. "After we've returned our friends to the war camp, and done something about this curse on us. Which reminds me - I need to take a quick dip in the aboleth pool."
Kelendra Shae |
Kel immediately tends to the unconscious Kaerishiel and Shalelu as she prays to Desna for their healing.

"Someone douse the fish, and then lets get back to the elves. The Echo seems to be gone, so hopefully that'll take most of the fight out of any damn drow left in the city."
Kelendra Shae |
Kel douses the fish and continues to douse the fish along with the other fish as the party wades back to the elves.
before we do get moving let's check the status of Kaerishiel and Shalelu and use little more healing if necessary
DM Bigrin |
Shalelu and Kaerishiel look to be unchanged from your earlier observations, exhibiting all the signs of physical and mental tortures. Their bodies simply were too overwhelmed by the transference to cope. A few moments, and some basic healing, later both elves opened their eyes.
The trip back to the elven encampment was uneventful. The only drow that you saw were running in full retreat, and there were no demons in sight. As you staggered into the clearing at the Crying Leaf camp, shouts of cheers rang out.
Anklebiter the Insane |
"So... we did it? The ruins are secured? Yes? Elven friends can rebuild now?" Anklebiter asks.
The Goblin edges closer to Lefrik; despite all the exposure to Elves over the past days and the positive relations he has enjoyed with some of them, the Goblin still feels a bit insecure when surrounded by very many armed Elves making a ruckus.
"If we're all good now, we could use the attention of a healer-Cleric. All of us, I think, for different stuff."
Woohoo! We came closer to dying in this part of the adventure than in all the previous ones combined, I think. ^_^
Bruendor Cavescouter |
We did. Something I'd like to not repeat for Book 4.
"Yes, please, priests," Bruendor says with clear exhaustion in his voice. "Curses to be broken, bodies to be healed, minds to be unburdened. The Echo has left scars upon us all."
Anklebiter the Insane |
"And I want to be able to put on dry clothes and keep them dry, please," Anklebiter says, with just a hint of sullenness. "This feeling cold is getting old."
DM Bigrin |
Eviana came to witness your return to Crying Leaf, and though her face is sad with the loss of both Shalelu's and Kaerishiel's raiding groups she is mightily encouraged with the success of the overall raid. "Your success has sent the drow fleeing into the surrounding forests and mountains. We still have much work to do to secure Celwynvian, but at last we can see the end in sight. How can we thank you? You are not of the elven people, by birth or by choice, and you had no stake in this fight other than our offer of payment, yet you were instrumental in securing this victory for us and returning two who were lost. Tell me what it is that you desire for your reward, and if it within my power I will grant it."
And if any of you say "a Winnebago" or "world peace" I'm going to go James Earl Jones all over you!
Anklebiter the Insane |
"Well," Anklebiter says, flummoxed. "Well. Right now, I would really like for us to be cured of what the Drows' pet aboleth did to us. After that... I would like to have some time with your wizards. And maybe some new clothes. My current wardrobe has pretty much had it. Oh. And I need some reagents, a mandrake root, spring water, ashes and things; my Duchess was eaten by a dragon and I want to recreate her."
Bruendor Cavescouter |
"For me, just getting my flesh back would be enough," Bruendor replies, wincing as he already feels his gelatinous skin cracking in the harsh air. "One of the deep dwellers caused this change to take place. I can't go for more than a handful of minutes without getting doused in water, and it's horrible. Anklebiter also needs that. Could you fix us, please?"
DM Bigrin |
[url=https://youtu.be/74ocbvwam7c?t=157]more like this[/ooc]
Eviana smiled gently as Bruendor and Anklebiter spoke up. "Of course. We have several priests on hand that should be able to take care of that condition. But, Master Anklebiter, as we spoke before, Crying Leaf has no large contingent of arcane casters. Why don't the five of you think on things for a while. I would like your presence at a celebratory feast this evening."
Anklebiter the Insane |
"No, I know," Anklebiter says, very seriously. "I want to sit down with the ones you do have so they can look at my books. I want them to copy down every spell I have that they think could be useful to the cause of restoring Celwynvian and stopping the Drow, now or in the future. They'll have to pay for their own inks and paper, but any spell I have, they're free to copy."
Kelendra Shae |
Kel's eyes light up at the offer from Eviana. "I did see the cutest bit of jewelry on a women in your camp. It was a lovely work of braided wire and colorful stones that sat around the brow to keep the hair out of her face. A headband of that style would be wonderful as well as practical and it would give me a token to remember our unity at Celwynvian."
headband of alluring charisma please

"For me, my strength was sapped by a spell... I could use restoration..." He admits.
Ignore that if his 3 points of StR have returned."Beyond our healing?" He ponders, "I sought fame and glory when I first came to Riddleport, a chance to earn to earn fame through deed. Riches were nice, but more than that, i wanted to leave my mark on this world so, die early or young, folks would know it was better for my passage. Would it be too arrogant to ask some elven artist or bard put their skills to work to make some note that we were here, of what we've done? Stonework depicting us? Or a tapestry magiced to last for generations? Or even a fine song? I know I should ask for further enchantments on my axe, or armor, but in truth, I do not know exactly WhAT is in your power, your majesty. And I think finding some way to be known, long after I am gone, as a hero who fought beside other heroes..." He looks at his companions, then looked back at the queen, "That would be the finest gift of all. And perhaps it would serve your people as well. I understand their distrust of other peoples, but maybe it would reassure them to know that they have had friends among other races too."
