DM Barcas - Kingmaker: Rivers Run Red

Game Master Isaac Duplechain

As Newhaven rises, threats besiege it from all directions. To the north, the news of the last heir of House Rogarvia threatens the start of a new war. To the south, an empire of trolls and monsters grows.

Thanks Vorduvai, was/is a great fight Issac presented us with. BUT they may not have got away just yet! Fortunately Akiros had the foresight to alert the guards to follow them and also he did mark the door before entering the hut, which brings me to my question-

Would the soldiers & guards have had time to make it to the house as yet DM? I'm hoping that they're waiting just outside (or inside?) ready to pick up the bad guys attempting to escape.

As for the Kingmaker monthly choices thing, I'll have to read up on it, but on the surface doesn't sound like a bad idea, can you point me to where best to get more info on it?

She's just made it to the top of the stairs. We'll see what happens when the dice hit the ground.

Barcas has come up with his own modified set of the Kingmaker Rules which are quite nice and eliminate several issues with the original AP rules, such as dependency on magic item creation/selling for sustaining the treasury. On his profile page click the 'Map & Rules Collection' and you'll see three PDF's (Army Rules, Kingmaker Kingdom Rules and Kingmaker Buildings), as well as the latest maps for Newhaven's development. Somewhere I came across a spreadsheet that helps to calculate and document all of the turn choices for Kingmaker, though I've modified mine to adjust for rules that Barcas has.

Hi everyone, I want to apologize, sincerely, for my utterly unexpected two-week absence. Some travel mishaps (just annoyances and delays, nothing dangerous) got me home late from that last tour, which put me behind on a death-march kinda project at work, the long hours of which put me behind on my studio work...you get the idea. Things got completely ridiculous really fast. In the end, something had to give, and I got to the point where I was terrified to even come out here and check the threads 'cos I knew I wouldn't be able to devote the time to replies that you all deserve.

Anyway, back now, catching up, posting.

Oh, and also; I know that in general I tend to take basically everything more seriously than folks around me, so I'm also sorry if this all just sounds silly. But I do mean it.

Scarab Sages RPG Superstar 2013

We're glad to have you back, Dan. Hope all is well.

Hey, gaming for fun is serious business!

Welcome back.

I also apologize for my recent absence. I am working a home invasion serial case. I went from two cases on Friday to currently six identified cases, three suspects in custody, three under investigation, and a complainant who was shot by the suspects in a different jurisdiction, plus confessions to several cases by the known suspects. It has kept me beyond busy trying to stay on top of this serial, so I have been pretty lax.

Throw in the rapidly approaching end of semester and I am pretty freaking swamped.

Male Human Heretic 5 Master of Many Styles 1

Well, I can definitely sympathize, that's for sure.

Well I'm glad to see you both back, and that pesky work thing sometimes gets in the way of the fun stuff - not sure how easy it is to be involved in a case like that and then shake it off at home for RPG creativity mode. In lurking around at the other stories you both are involved in, it was evident you were both jammed up, so no worries.

Hehe well if we weren't trying to entreat with the druid and slay the hag in the storyline, I'm sure we could come up with some entertaining player traveling conversation to draw things out a bit -- Verik can come up with all kinds of ridiculous things to spout out about :)

Male Human Fighter (Archer) 6

I say go get 'em. Some things are more important, including your sanity

....your sanity.....I make no claims on the preservation of mine.

So to compare the group's travels south on this expedition with the Stolen Lands Key map, we traveled SE from Sanctuary (I-15) to J-15, turned east at the Nettles place on the Guldrin River, found the ford with the Hydra in J-14, and then got to K-15 or perhaps into K-16 with the caravan attack? On the next day we've traveled back to the Tuskwater lake, moved SW and crossed from M-20 into L-20 between Candlemere and Tuskwater?

Oh and since we're not in combat (yet), how did we want to divvy up the purchased alchemist fire and acid flasks?

male human barbarian 5, ranger 3

Can I apply alchemists' fire to my greatsword? If so, what's the effect and how long does it last?

Six players, two dozen flasks, two each of fire and acid per head?

@Steven Hmm. I'd say that you can, but it damages the sword as well. How about 1 point of fire damage per hit and 1 point of fire damage per round, with a length of 1d6+1 rounds upon application, which takes 1 standard action? Sounds fair?

So, my case has turned into huge snowball of cases. We are merging 9 cases (5 of which were mine alone) over two jurisdictions and four divisions, with a total of 9 investigators (myself included) working the master case. Today's developments moved me from the primary investigator to one of the junior team members, something that I don't mind. I've only been an investigator for six months, and this case is very serious. It needs experienced investigators taking the lead. It should make the news when we file the charges, so I'll link to it when we get there. I can't go into a ton of detail about it, but working with this team should be a big career boost. Plus, my contribution to the case was instrumental, so that should be an additional boost.

Male Human Samurai-Ronin 4/ Oracle-Battle 3 | AC 24/ T12/ F23, HP73, F+8/ R +4/ W +7, Init +1(Roll twice), Percep +6, Sense Motive +10

Hey congrats Issac! It's always great to hear that there are still Good Guys out there on the police forces doing Good Work. Please keep it up.

Great job Isaac!

So. 9 cases. 9 investigators. But 5 of the cases were yours. I think you have 4 slackers on the team ;)

I just got the bulk of the original assignments because my crime analysis guys found the pattern in my area, while the others were working parallel investigations on other cases. We eventually all got them all connected.

The main suspect in this group was charged with capital murder yesterday, in part using the information I had developed. It was a great feeling to be involved in the investigation, even in a "junior" capacity. Hopefully it will hit the news in the next few days, so I can link it.

Good job Isaac, good job :) Using your own words; You'r a real life paladin :)

Me neither! Am SO loving this game. Thanks again so much to Issac and all y'all for letting me join you in it and for you all making it so great. This game rocks!

Wait until Akiros gets to actually interact with the other PCs, and when I have the time to really get going. We were once doing like 35 posts/day, all of high quality.

Male Human Samurai-Ronin 4/ Oracle-Battle 3 | AC 24/ T12/ F23, HP73, F+8/ R +4/ W +7, Init +1(Roll twice), Percep +6, Sense Motive +10

Wow. That's like music to my ears : )

And just so it's clear, the main reason I've been laggard in posting is because, with the several week delay between the two groups, it's seemed like it would be ok. I will certainly greatly pick up my posting rate once it becomes necessary. But if it is all better for me to do so now, no worries, just let me know.

35 posts a day... Those were the days. But hey! Life, right?

Awesome story so far Akiros, I must admit I had some mixed feeling about your open hostility toward Tandlara at first but I like you so far :)

Link to the case that I was talking about.

Ouch. They're just kids... Lord knows I did some stupid stuff at that age but christ! I'm shocked.

Heads up. I'm going out of town for the weekend, I'll be offline from Friday to late Sunday (GMT).

Hehe Steven -- I would have given you a contested Bluff check but Verik is untrained and can't lie or bluff to save his skin. Good stuff there - we'll have to see how things play out so that they can get an understanding of one another (eventually).

Male Human Cleric (Abadar) 7th / Fighter 1st / AC 24/10T/24F / HP 61 / F +10 R +3 W +11 / Init. +0 / Perc. +5 / Sense Motive +14

Oh man - Khal whattcha gonna do with the riots and that bloody heart challenge?

I'm hoping soon we can see more frequent player-side posting - not 35 posts a day mind you, but assuming we can bump up the frequency to everyone posting every 24-48 hours. Do we have an average frequency we're trying to maintain? Really slow out there on the boards lately, though it appears several of you are seeing the same thing in some of the other PbP shared games, so it's not just ours here.

Dan is also really swamped. This sort of thing tends to be contagious. I do hope to increase my posting soon. Only a few more weeks until I at least don't have to worry about my classes. That will help a lot.

Scarab Sages RPG Superstar 2013

I struggle to make time when focused on work, and posting from my phone is a pain in the arse, and then the computer at home keeps getting into bloody fights with Paizo. But the game is interesting and Nikolai fascinates me. I'll keep coming back.

I am very glad that Taisper is not in Sanctuary right now. While he would be a great choice to hunt for Malgorzata, it would not be without substantial risks to the populace.

Male Human Cleric (Abadar) 7th / Fighter 1st / AC 24/10T/24F / HP 61 / F +10 R +3 W +11 / Init. +0 / Perc. +5 / Sense Motive +14

You mean depopulating the town of all nonbelievers is a problem? Awww you never let Taisper have any fun :)

I don't know if you guys like metal but I've been listening to the album Baldur by Skálmöld and this song consistently makes me think of Nicholai.

If metal is your thing then here's a link.

Edit: The song is called Kvaðning which means Call to Arms.

Hey gang, if anyone is looking for a great game, come check out the Dwarves vs Elves game I'm in.

There's One spot open on the Dwarf Team (the Best team of course, which is kicking ass)

and there's a few spots open on the wimpy Elf Team (cuz o'course they being so useless n' all keep gettin' kilt so quick like)

You have to pick one side though an ONLY check that link out. There's NO peeking in both threads.

You can also go HERE to the mutual thread to get some info on the game in general.

Can't speak for the Elf thread, but our Dwarven thread has been getting an average of about 15 posts a day for several months now, and it doesn't seem to be slowing down at all. Chainmail is a great DM and all the players are a pleasure to game with as well.

So, the choice is obvious which team to pick.

But if'n yer tha type what likes tae cheer tha under dog, then go wit' tha elves, cuz we don' need ya!

Male Human Fighter (Archer) 6

@giving away helm to Nikolai

That should be interesting.....

@Nikolai: that's an interesting rules interpretation to require a touch attack to make a grapple attempt. To my knowledge the touch attack is essentially "rolled into" the grapple attempt - and thus it is not required.

It's probably a 3.5 holdover, when it was a touch attack followed by a Strength check. It's why I didn't understand what he was doing and made it an unarmed strike.

Scarab Sages RPG Superstar 2013

My bad. I get edition confusion sometimes. Does this mean I can't have those gauntlwts of ogre power?

Silver Crusade

Male Human 8th Lvl Expert

Hehe the twist would be that Barcas would allow the old-school gauntlets, but only if Nikolai and Verik go on a special quest together for him to learn how to craft them up. Doh!

Schoolwork is done, folks. You know what that means.

Let's get these posts flowing. I'm going to aim for twice a day from now on, though the wall-to-wall work nature of my job and the needs of my family might throw that for a loop from time to time.

Yay!

We had some guidelines regarding the time window for posts in combat, 24 hrs I think, should we DMPC Jemini or should we maybe skip over her this turn ...?

Scarab Sages RPG Superstar 2013

I just want to offer that I'm roleplaying Nikolai as I see him and read him. There's nothing personal going on with me in the game. Y'all probably figure that, but when PCs start yelling at each other, it's sometimes nice to have a reminder. :b

A common post when Kyras and Shoto Imuri got too heated in their arguments about the whereabouts of his sister.

Oops sorry. I didn't see the last bit in DM Barcas note that said that both Zander and Nikolai's turn had run and that Jemini was up next. I was waiting for Nikolai. d'uh!

I actually just posted ahead since Zander is on autopilot.

Absolutely understood, and I was going to say the same thing as Verik has been pushing him quite a bit. I figure a great redemption story has to have a good amount of strife, and it makes sense that Verik would be the most vehemently opposed to his return for the time being on several issues.

Of course as the player I want to ensure that despite the conflict I'm playing with inclusiveness in mind, so if you feel they are wedging too much I'll nudge it back in the other direction. Like Taisper you're playing a very difficult character that for now is set apart from the rest quite a bit, and it's not an easy job to play day in and out I'm sure. Jemini though should be able to keep both of us in line :)

In case anybody enjoys that sort of thing, I've posted my take on a monk remake on tenletter.

That's a really interesting way to give choice to the class with the use of insights, similar to how a rogue chooses talents I suppose. The approach to Flurry is interesting as well - is that mainly to eliminate the confusion with FoB and TWF, or more to address the issue of FoB only being useful in a Full-Attack action currently?

In my monthly home campaign I have a player who is playing a monk for the first time, and also represents the primary martial character of the four in play. So far I haven't seen many of the concerns and rants that the Paizo boards claim, but I've been trying to understand it and keep an eye out for adjustments that may be needed as they rise in level (6th Lvl currently).

Thanks for the feedback Vorduvai :)

If you have a monk as primary martial character in your party and it is working - then there's no problem really. Every campaign is different, and it sounds like in yours the balance allows for the monk to be the front-line. I tend to play my monk characters like that.

Quote:

Both really, I don't like Flurry of Blows as it is Two-Weapon Fighting; to me that means the monk doesn't have a unique way to fight (contrast to the ragers, favored enemies, smiters, weapon training, challenges, banes, judgements, sneak attack, etc). So I wanted to make something that is more unique and creates a more dynamic feel to the monk's combat; and incidentally also synergizes with the improved mobility and speed of a monk.
