DM Barcas - Kingmaker: Rivers Run Red

Game Master Isaac Duplechain

As Newhaven rises, threats besiege it from all directions. To the north, the news of the last heir of House Rogarvia threatens the start of a new war. To the south, an empire of trolls and monsters grows.

He has reach, so Berrin has to leave the 10' square to reach a place (5') where he can attack with the greatsword.

That's so weird. I've been refreshing every day to see when DM Barcas takes the will-o-wisps turn; and it was not showing any new posts (last post shown was Elsir's post from Saturday). Some weird cache issue I wager.

...

BUT! What an awesome display from Berrin - and all warriors! (Now don't forget that we still have a bothersome wisp to deal with. We may well have a trying time against that thing.)

Male

At 7 hp and horseless I don't think Berrin will be pitching much in on the wisp.

We're having a rollicking chat on Facebook if you'd log on!

Ah, right, thanks DM B, forgot that bit.

Jemini should only heal 2d6, not 3d6, with channel.

DM Barcas wrote:

That is a common misconception.

"Channel Positive Energy (Su): When a paladin reaches 4th level, she gains the supernatural ability to channel positive energy like a cleric. Using this ability consumes two uses of her lay on hands ability. A paladin uses her level as her effective cleric level when channeling positive energy. This is a Charisma-based ability."

The dice are not based on the lay-on-hands dice of the paladin; Jemini channels as a 5th level cleric, i.e. 3d6.

Yeah, we determined that in Facebook chat. It's kind of strange that the paladin is more effective at odd levels at healing multiple allies compared to single ones.

It's a question of where you place the oddity.

The alternative would be to have the channeling between different classes not match up. The real culprit here is that the lay-on-hands isn't set to grow at odd levels - that would've standardized things a lot more and kept the dice the same between lay on hands, channeling, sneak attack, alchemist bombs, etc.

Two Year interim stuff.

Areas of Development

Borodin would open an Aldori fighting school to help train up the citizens of Sanctuary.

He would then start a Magus society within the school in the interest of starting something similar to the Kor-Rondo. (This was the society in the Borodin’s alternate reality where he was trained as a Magus by this society. He would have helped keep the peace in lawless areas of the river kingdoms even acting as an arbitrator. Seeking out lost knowledge and bringing enlightenment to the kingdoms would be the top priority.) He and his followers would devote their time and efforts into seeking knowledge and artifacts for Elsir’s Pathfinder lodge.

Personality and Alignment shift

In this time I would like to see Borodin make a steady transition to Neutral Good. He would cease being a freedom fighter fighting against tyranny and would start to direct his efforts into the betterment of Sanctuary.

Although Borodin agrees with Verik on a great deal of things, he more often than not, disagrees on the methods to the ends. Borodin would most likely have taken out a loan with the Banker which would at times cause chafing with Verik prying his nose into Borodin's venture.

Kingmaker Role

Borodin could lend his talents to become the Ambassador or Spymaster in regards to Kingmaker turn checks. Whatever makes sense from a DM standpoint. Spymaster could possibly make more sense since his group would be out in the field “seeking knowledge” anyway.

Silver Crusade

Male Human 8th Lvl Expert

This weekend I'm going to push myself to finish out some flavor on the interim relationships with certain PC's and NPC's. I find myself understanding changes/dynamics with Borodin, Elsir and Berrin/Aylene the best in this period. The others...less so...so if you have an idea on how things with Verik might develop or a character hook you want to throw out, give me a shout about it.

How is everyone planning on leveling up? You're just a round or two away from it. Once we finish the combat, we will finish the chapter and start the new one (probably over the weekend).

Verik will level up to 6th Cleric of course, but since you're allowing retraining per Ultimate Campaign I'm looking to swap out his Craft Wand crafting feat for Craft Magic Arms and Armor.

Are we still only going with the basic spells and such? Not all the expanded or 3rd party material?

Good. Verik can reforge dragonsbreath.

Anything published by Paizo is fair game.

Thanks for the DMPC by the way. Had three guests for several days, busy week.

Also, seriously, there must be some kind of glitch in the Paizo system that whenever dice rolls are combined with the word "Akiros" the roller is forbidden to go over a 10 : |

Heh. I think a special tithe to Abadar would be in order for "the service".

Planing on another level of Magus btw.

Revised version - added an initiative where it concerns Jabber and the Sootscales. Detailed out relationship thoughts for the characters and various NPC's, and added some desired possibilities for the Kingdom Building turns.

Verik Jarrow, Changes for Consideration in 4710-12

Professional & Political:

(i.e. changes or actions in profession or duty, changes or notable actions as a Founder, politics of the Founder’s Council that has an impact)

Founder’s Council Politics
* Verik works to offer all Sootscales amnesty and a place in Newhaven society, on the grounds that captives from the battle serve in some capacity for seven years. The laws introduced are called the ’Laws of Sootscale Protection, Rehabilitation and Basic Freedoms’, which he is very passionate about, as he sees this effort as consistent with bringing civilization to a race that has been historically shunned and assaulted. He works to have Jabber installed as their leader and liaison, and sets aside land parcels north of the main city for a “Sootscale Quarter” to house them. The quarter would be partitioned off so that its entrance can be guarded against mischief, and Verik would pay for Vaultmen services to do so whenever Akiros’ Guardsmen cannot or will not do so. Sootscale kobolds would be required to have a curfew, work in various areas of Newhaven for an agreed-upon wage, undergo efforts of education…and have names given.

* Verik lobbies for Elsir to become a full Founder and Magister of Newhaven (replacing Jhod Kavken in whatever manner the story puts forward about him), believing this will break the Erastil influence and emphasis on resources to the outlying communities at the cost of development in Sanctuary itself.

* Verik lobbies for Borodin to become a full Founder – either Grand Diplomat (replacing Kesten Garess) or Spymaster (replacing Halorouth Callmanov). If it was Diplomat, it could be in-game a move by Verik to lessen the “closeness” of Newhaven with Brevian politics, particularly as strife mounts between the Houses there. Verik doesn’t trust Kesten’s politics when it comes to Brevian matters. Or maybe DM Fiat says Kesten gets pulled back by House Garess into matters up north. If it’s Hal, that would be more about DM Fiat and not a Verik initiative.

* Verik calls for ’Laws to Declare and Register Arcane Casters…’, much in the same way he has Laws regarding divine clerics. He goes on in the Council about the need to proscribe uses of “destructive magic” that could be harmful to the cities and property of Newhaven. He suggests that association in existing “societies” would be acceptable, but un-guilded or unassociated casters must be declared and registered. Verik doesn’t want to do this directly – he puts it forth as an issue the Magister’s office MUST oversee. Whether it is passed or not is up to DM and players, but he’d push this forward in a strong way after Elsir is Magister.

* Verik Lobbies for the Newhaven-Mivon Route (and the Newhaven-Varnhold Route as well) to Bypass Restov and Pitax Trade:
Verik will push hard for the emphasis of expansion and trade southward to solidify what he sees as Newhaven’s foremost destiny – the taming of the Stolen Lands and reformation of the East Sellen River trade corridor. It stands to benefit Mivon and New Stetven for better flow of goods and services up and down the corridor, making Newhaven extremely vital (and wealthy) in the link. It stands to lessen the influence of existing trade routes through Pitax and Restov as a result. It also stands to give a boom to the horse trade (which Verik has a small interest stake in Aleza’s stables), the wagon and wheel trade (which Verik has majority direct investments in), and gives rise to a whole new host of trades to support those that ply the route. Due to the close alliance with Varnhold, this route would also be important, further reducing the once-monopoly influence of Restov.

* The Vaultmen program expands in scope and reach – a full fifty based out of Sanctuary and a near twenty out of Olegsgrav. Some chafing still occurs between the Vaultmen and the City Watches of Newhaven from time-to-time, as disputes over jurisdiction and use-of-force occur, and the senior officers have an unspoken rivalry (namely First Vaultman Viktor Akarius and Captain of the Guard Giergios Dumanov). Some have accused Verik of “hunting” top talent from the First Army during his visits. The largest ‘incident’ however was not with the Watch or the Army, but the use of Vaultmen to augment Oleg Leveton’s tax collections across Newhaven in 4711 – some attempts by outlying farmsteads to not pay…and even waylay the collectors caused a reaction of force by the Vaultmen that certain citizens declared excessive. Naturally, the dispute had multiple sides to it.

Another issue with the Vaultmen in 4712 now lies in competition with another looser protection “guild” that has formed to try and undercut the prices of the Vaultmen (Verik would say encouraged by the likes of reverers of Cayden and Milani), luring away some merchant and caravan protection business. The protection guild has specifically targeted and maligned the Vaultmen, though recently they too suffered a reputation setback when some men affiliated with the guild stole the coffers of a merchant caravan coming back from the south. Verik, naturally, seized upon this issue and used it to maximum effect.

* Verik still promotes the need for ‘non-arcane schooling’ at the Keyhouse School and adjacent Orphanage under Madame Gerda Ryton, investing w/ Bank loans and organizing donations to make it a higher-end preparatory school for well-to-do urban families of Sanctuary (of which the Bank would have a fair investment return in). The solidifying of a full Orphanage house, however, is philanthropic and fulfills a long-held oath by Verik to ensure Tandlara’s legacy with the children. With recent refugees from Galt and Brevoy, this has become more of a potential issue.

High Cleric and Faith Politics
* Formation of the ‘Newhaven Interfaith Monthly Conclave of the Office of the High Cleric’ (yes it’s that bad of a name):
As Sanctuary grows into the infancy of a “capital city” he stresses the need for cooperation and communication of the “approved” faiths of Newhaven, which finally do grow in number. He solidifies a monthly conclave (meeting) held in an open meeting hall built for this purpose in the “temple block,” separate from the Bank and the other temples and shrines of Sanctuary. This is where he formalizes requests for approval of new/arriving faith applications and declared arrivals of divine casters on the rolls, as well as chairs the meeting itself where faith leaders discuss/argue/debate on matters that the Office of the High Cleric must record and bring to the Founder’s Council. It has met with mixed results – Verik has had many headaches with the “upstart” faiths seemingly trying to stymie him at every turn, though his “coalition” of lawful faiths wins out on serious initiatives. Though the Conclave cannot “vote” him out of his role as Founder and High Cleric, there was an attempt in 4711 to have another faith leader chair the Conclave (Iomedae). The Second Sword of Iomedae did not want it, however, and other motions for a change were not carried by a small margin.
Proposed “Approved” Faiths Now in Newhaven: Abadar, Iomedae, Erastil, Pharasma, Shelyn, Cayden Cailean, Milani, Torag (small shrine), Sarenrae (small shrine), Alseta (shrine between Abadar Bank and Pharasma grounds). Desna is “paid” and “approved” in late 4710 by an alliance of priests from Cayden Cailean, Milani and Shelyn, with most other faiths close to Abadar abstaining. As of yet, however, no Desnan representative has ever attended.

* Verik Still Has Trouble with the Desnans (an annual annoyance):
Ever since the conflict with the Abadarians and Desnans in the Summer of 4710, the Desna faithful have not forgotten. This has manifested so far in three ways that have been irksome to the Banker:
- In the Summer of 4711 on the one-year anniversary of the incident, the Bank of Sanctuary was suddenly overwhelmed by butterflies for three days, hovering over the doorways and following the Banker and his Clerks wherever they went, getting into the Bank’s congregations and sermons…and even a Founder’s Council that Verik attended. Finally after three days, Anya Amitel asked the Initiates to pick some of their best roses from the greenhouse and “offer” them to the butterflies outside of Bank grounds in an open display. The next morning the butterflies were all gone. Nothing was said by Verik on the roses being unpaid for – rumor has it that he paid for the plucking of the roses with his private funds.
- On Desnan holy holidays of summer and winter solstices, images of Verik in unflattering terms appear on various walls of Sanctuary, but which no one sees draw. Loud music often awakens Verik during the solstice nights, though no one can determine where the music comes from or how it is cast.
- In late 4710 of the winter solstice, a group of Desnans was spotted northwest of Sanctuary, gathering as they had done that summer that led to the incident. Once again, Verik demanded they register themselves as divine agents and petition for acceptance on the rolls as an approved faith of Newhaven. This was ignored by the Desnan gathering. It seemed that another confrontation might have occurred, but the newly arrived ranking cleric of Cayden Cailean paid the registration tax on their behalf and “secured” the declaration list for the High Cleric. Of course, the list was a forged mockery with all kinds of unseemly false names and nicknames (interspersed with phrases addressed to the High Cleric), but the Caydenite insisted it was valid…leaving an irate Verik to accept it as opposed to picking a fight with the Caydenites as well as the Desnans. Since then, all public Desnan gatherings have been paid and “documented” by clerics of Cayden Cailean and supported by the ranking priestess of Milani, much to Verik’s irritation.
- It is said in 4712 that a new theatrical troop will arrive and perform a play of the Founders and their exploits for Newhaven. Unfortunately, unconfirmed rumors have reached Verik that the bards and performers have Desnan influences, and may malign the Banker with exaggerated tales of his experiences in the Stolen Lands.

Abadarian Bank Politics
* Fledgling Bank of Olegsgrav is Founded (a divestment of power):
Verik loans funds to Junior Banker Quiss and establishes a fledgling wooden-structure Bank of Abadar in Olegsgrav, allowing Thomas to take a small contingent of newer Clerks and Keysworn with him. Thomas will remain “Junior Banker” until the full loan issued by the Bank of Sanctuary is paid in full with interest. Like all new arrangements, there is occasional disagreement between Banker and Junior Banker on matters of managing style and resource emphasis, though Verik knows that he must trust Thomas to tailor his Bank to the needs of Olegsgrav. Verik insists, however, that relation decisions with other faiths (as High Cleric of Newhaven) and the Banks of Restov and Brevoy (as the seniormost Banker of Newhaven) must flow through Verik directly.

* The Vaultmen expands its scope and reach, establishing an adjunct office out of the new Bank of Olegsgrav. Standards are still rigorous and vetting by the two Bankers to ensure a bonded status of the Vaultmen is maintained. Some rivalries between the two towns are apparent, but encouraged by Banker and Junior Banker as friendly, healthy competition. Keysworn guards and Vaultmen rivalries also exist, though they typically perform different duties and functions.

* The Bank of Sanctuary is Young (a longer-term view to maximize loyalty):
The Bank in 4712 focuses on getting its full contingent of Clerks trained up and receiving a new group of Initiates in place, though the full realization of this is still several years away. The continuing joke is that the Verik staffs his Bank with “children” and some of his Full Clerks would still be Junior Clerks at another Bank, and some Initiates are given the Test of the Keys too early. Verik balances this as best as he can, as he innately distrusts migration of Clerks from Brevoy or Restov, and almost none come up from Absalom or Taldor. Verik has had to give three older vetted Clerks to Thomas Quiss for the new Bank at Olegsgrav, taking on the burden of training up younger talent and doing the best he can with it, with some key Senior Clerks (Anya, Eben, Dannil) anchoring the younger ones. Ultimately, Verik believes within five years that he will have a full contingent of capable Clerks that have been locally “raised” to his specifications and devoted to his brand of leadership.

* The Bank of Sanctuary is Rich (and it should be with the growth):
The Bank of Sanctuary’s coffers have grown mighty indeed, with the variety of services it offers and the demand by an increasing urban population, not to mention the influx of trade from Mivon, New Stetven and Varnhold. Classic services of spellcasting, moneylending, appraisals, contact arbitration and bank vault storage have all increased. Vaultmen proceeds from merchants, shopkeepers and well-to-do families have greatly increased, even if somewhat slowed by a new “protection guild” of non-bonded men that has formed in 4712 to undercut them. Bank loans to the fledgling merchant’s guild, to Madam Ryton’s School and Orphanage, to Elsir’s Harborage House expansions, to Borodin’s Aldori Fighting School, to Aleza Bellavieu’s Equine Ranches and Leather Goods (already repaid), and to several other merchants and craftsmen involving trade have all been sound investments.

* The Banker of Sanctuary is Sorta Rich (though he doesn’t try to show it):
Verik is becoming a wealthy man in his own right (Wealthy Cost of Living), though he does not believe in an ostentatious display of wealth as some of his “softer” Bankers in other cities would. Though he has been very careful to separate his private investments from those the Bank makes (particularly where Bank loans are concerned or Newhaven treasury funds are found), he has made some direct investments to enterprises he strongly believes in.
- He has a minor investment stake in Aleza Bellavieu’s equine and leatherworking business enterprises – after she repaid Bank loans early and made it clear she would not tolerate Bank influence upon her (successful) business decisions, an impressed Verik offered to invest directly in a minor stake capacity, which she accepted.
- He has a major investment stake in the building of lake-barges for the Tuskwater/Candlemere trade route, having familiarity with boats and water trade from the Jarrow family. His investments are cyclical, as it requires funds to craft a new boat and sell it, but the returns are strong when a boat or barge is sold.
- He has controlling interest in the building of wooden wagons and wagon-wheels for sale to trade route merchants and the Merchant’s Guild of Sanctuary, having struck a partnership with a skilled family of woodcrafters who did not have business acumen. The business is called “Mercadi’s Wagons and Woodworking” after Master Mercadi the family’s elder woodcrafter and carpenter. Because of his many other duties Verik has a managing partner who has a minor stake in the business - to which he has apprenticed Petyr Mikhalia to learn all he can from him (and to report back any indiscretions). Verik seeks to make quality wagons and wheels with standard specifications that allow for easier repair and replacement over the hodgepodge of individually crafted wagons on the routes. In a few years he hopes Petyr will gain enough knowledge and experience that Verik can use him for other business ventures.

Verik has put much of his wealth away in the Bank, eager to invest in select new ventures – for the game of investing in a venture and seeing it come to fruition is a heady drug to the Banker. Due to Aleza, Verik now owns four horses. He grows private funds for eventually procuring the “finest” weapon and armor materials money can buy for his dweomercrafting (one day desiring to procure mithril and adamantine for his own works). Otherwise, he maintains a small art collection of Taldan sculptures, Keleshite woven pieces and surviving Galtian inventions in his private quarters and vaults.

Relationships: PC’s:

(i.e. changes in how character relates to other characters good or bad – new developments, issues, understandings, rifts, etc.)
Berrin: Berrin is considered by Verik to be one of his true friends, including one that can tease and talk “plain” to Verik and not give offense to him (unless by embarrassing stories in public at a formal function). He regards Berrin’s transformation to his current role as nothing short of tremendous. By extension he treats Aylene in much the same manner…though there are times when her temper or ill-timed humor in public can cause a temporary strain which needs to be smoothed out. Politically, Verik often supports Berrin’s proposals for increases to the army or defenses to the realm. The only strain with Berrin from Verik’s standpoint in the interim has been an accusation that Verik was “hunting for prospects” from the First Army whenever he would spend time training, so in the last year that has stopped (Verik rides with Aleza now, and trains martial skills with his Vaultmen and Keysworn Guards in the Bank compound). Verik and Berrin have also been on competing sides with investments to new taverns and inns in Sanctuary, both having different perspectives on what a “good” inn or tavern should represent. None of that is of serious conflict to Verik however, and he visits Berrin and Aylene at least weekly at the Castle.

Elsir: Considered another “friend” by Verik as the pair further solidify their relationship on a variety of topics. Verik personally identifies with being the “outsider” in establishing his works, and will assist Elsir in bank loans, resources and any influence he has to make the Harborage House Lodge a reality. He keeps true to learning elvish properly from Elsir – painful and slow as that may have been to the elf. Anything as it relates to Tandlara matters to Verik, including anything Elsir needs to not walk down the same “path” as Tandlara may have done after Stagfall. Obviously, their alliance on uncovering knowledge of Ghol-Gan and surrounding ruins is assured, provided it proves in the interests of the well-being of Newhaven. Their friendship with Willas – and his relationship with Anya whom is most dear to Verik – is another source of mutual understanding over the interim. Where Verik and Elsir may disagree is likely in the political arena of laws regarding the arcane in Newhaven, as Verik would put this squarely on Elsir as Magister to enforce.

Borodin: In the two-year period Verik would solidify a friendship with Borodin as he transitions from the “out of time” freedom fighter to a more nuanced proponent of good and knowledge. Verik approves the Bank loan for Borodin to open up his own Aldori Fighting School, knowing it has more elements of a society-within-the-school with Borodin’s brand of magic and martial study. Verik’s support for Borodin to become a Founder by 4711-2 is, in part, a realization that Borodin is a force of Weal in his own way, and his society/school adds to the power and stability of Newhaven. They disagree on many political matters of course, but the debates are quip-filled and do not get personal (as they have with Jhod and more recently Zander). One area where Verik gets annoyed, however, is Borodin’s mocking of his so-called “romantic life” after Verik related to him no less than five proposals of arranged marriage (sight unseen) from Brevoy, Restov and even Mivon that he turned down.

Nikolai: Nikolai and Verik…hmmm. They may disagree on most everything, but I envision some level of agreed-upon accord on very specific topics, especially as Nikolai has been trending in his development lately. I see them agreeing on crafting items of power that help Nikolai, with Dragonsbreath being the first and foremost matter between them. Another area of agreement could be Verik’s open antipathy towards the games of the Brevian noble houses – ironically Verik believes Nikolai has demonstrated that while he is Brevian and of Rogarvia, he is not one of them in outlook.

I have an idea for a small (maybe 4-5 posts each side) interim conversation that I’d love the two of them to have in the months after Hydra’s Bridge, but I’ll PM Steven on that to see what his take is.

Akiros: Looking for Khaladon’s input on this one, as Akiros has shown to be so much about duty and with very little time or patience for anything else, outside of his relationship to Elsbeth and his exploration as an agent of Iomedae. Verik has certainly demonstrated his alliance with Iomedae followers, so no issue or rivalry there. Verik has a clear dislike of Brevian nobility, but would treat Elspeth with open respect for her decision to turn away from the “ills” of her house as he sees it (though perhaps his claim of such is not something Elspeth wants to hear). Verik’s desire to establish the Mivon trade route may provide a new source of talk and interest with the Mivonese Akiros, or may prove to be a source of tension. Occasional issues between the Sanctuary Guardsmen and the Vaultmen crop up at times.

Jemini: Jemini…well looking for Lorekeeper’s direction on this one and where he envisions Jemini heading in the interim period. Status quo or something new? Verik’s fully dealt with any fanciful notions of Jemini after Stagfall and the Return by now, though she still can get him to do most any personal favor if she puts her mind to it. Politically, he works to limit her power and authority as First Founder and squelch any notions of ‘Queen’ or too close of ties to Brevoy, something he is quite open about to her if she asks. Politics of the Founder’s Council is probably where the two come into greatest conflict, though it is not personal for them, as they both understand the games of state and rulership. Yet, he holds a soft place in his heart for her father and mother, and admires the Lebeda family greatly on a personal level. Verik would work with Jemini to expand the resources allotted to those afflicted by horror (maybe a Hospital building in a 2nd district to represent that), provided he gets developments that he wants.

Zander Whitestag: I envision this relationship souring a fair bit, particularly with the arrival of a Milani faction that would heighten differences and tensions between Abadar and Milani. Zander has always desired the Everbloom Path, and this would give rise to more vocal disagreements amongst the pair in private and public. Perhaps not as caustic as Verik and Jhod, but besides their devotion to Tandlara and the crafted headband as his “first” item, there is little for the men to share in kindred spirit. In Council, Verik can really only agree on supporting fund requests for the expansion of the Wardens to protect the trade routes and scout the countryside for the protection of an expanding Newhaven. Perhaps because of Jhod, Verik will try not to let disagreements get so far out of hand that there is no way back from it.

Taisper Stozs: ??? This is an enigma as it fully is dependent on Taisper’s interactions over the interim. If status quo, Verik would meet often with his cousin to pray and do dedications with him as he can, support his family as needed, and confide in him on matters that allow Taisper to practice his particular form of service to Abadar. Verik is always worried for his cousin and his happiness, but has come to understand his path is very different from the one Verik is on. After being rebuffed once firmly, Verik does not ask about Borodin and what may have been gleaned from the “other” timeline.

Relationships: NPC’s:

(i.e. changes in how character relates to notable NPC’s good or bad – new developments, issues, understandings, rifts, etc.). Also way to introduce new notable NPC’s that are part of the character’s life).
* Jhod Kavken: (??) If survives Hydra Bridge, it’s assumed the rifts between them are not restored – at best they can put aside their differences while in the same room for the benefit of Newhaven. Jhod never attends any of the ‘Interfaith Congregations’, though he sometimes sends proxies. Erastil’s priests turns away from Sanctuary and Olegsgrav and into the Narlmarches and strictly rural farmstead communities between the towns. Still, there are signs of Jhod’s influence on Verik from their earlier days of friendship: Verik’s ability to ‘midwife’ and use herb-lore for ailments, his incorporation of herb-lore and natural healing into Initiate and Clerk studies, the annual trek up to Stagfall where he takes a tree planting as well as stonework for the memorial park there.

* Aleza Bellavieu: Over the interim period he counts her as one of his true friends, one that can tell him what he needs to hear and not risk repercussions for it. He admires her business savvy and strength of will, as well as her wry humor. He has learned to ride well from spending time with Aleza and her people with the horse breeding operations. Riding weekly with her may have started with a way to show that she was not limited by her injury, but now it has become an enjoyable pastime for him. He enjoys talking business and politics with her and gaining her insight, and has deepened his appreciation for the “good” things that have come out of ruined Galt.

* Willas Gunderson: A friend of Verik’s with their interest in uncovering the knowledge of the Stolen Lands, Verik continues to admire the man’s unbridled interest in books, lore and discovery. His relationship with Anya Amitel is approved by Verik, though he has taken an almost paternal attitude to Willas on more than one occasion to make it clear he would not want to see anything that would spoil Anya’s happiness and well-being. Verik enjoys chatting with Willas at the Harborage House for tea, discussing Galtan politics and other learned bits of lore and trivia that Willas has come across.

* Aylene Myrdal: (See Berrin). Verik will continue to grant her access to flight with his powers, provided she is not heavy with child or if they are in some dispute – which happens upon occasion even if they know each other well at this point. At one point in a pointless argument on divinity, Verik pointed out that he was adept at childbirth practices (having learned them from Jhod in 4708-9), only for her to suggest he deliver her children. Naturally, this embarrassed him and put an awkward moment between Verik and Berin … Verik also doesn’t want to explain the “argument” to Lord Varn either.

Abadarian NPC’s of Note
* The Twins, Casil and Sulda Whitestag (deceased): Verik was hard hit by this loss, and honors their memory with sculptures of the twins in both the courtyard and in his dweomercrafting room, as he felt they would have loved the opportunity to excel in that arena if they had lived. Verik has taken to calling his own warhammer and longsword “The Twins” in honor of their memory and sacrifice at the battle of Hydra’s Bridge.

* Thomas Quiss: Thomas is now Junior Banker of Olegsgrav, and so the relationship between Banker and Junior Banker has changed. Verik is proud of Thomas, even though they disagree on small matters of focus and managing style between the Banks. Both being from Absalom, they do not disagree over the big issues on laws and government. Verik thinks that Thomas, however, is too keen on securing trade from Restov, and warns against Thomas getting too cozy with the wily Banker Demesceau of Restov.

* Anya Amitel: Anya is now his senior most clerk, and treats her as such – though he knows she will never be an adequate Banker (and does not wish to be). He looks to her to keep the day-to-day operational affairs of the Bank in good order. He is truly proud of her and approves of her relationship with Willas – Verik will provide her full dowry in Brevian/Taldan tradition if it comes to a marriage proposal. If they do marry, he will require her to spend two days a week in her quarters to keep presence on her duties as well as arrive early on the other non-rest days, but otherwise would understand that she would move to lodgings outside of the Bank with her husband.

* “Old” Eben Whitestag: Next to Anya, Verik relies heavily on Eben as his reassuring, guiding hand for the younger clerks and initiates, putting him as a fatherly role for many. Verik uses Eben in cases when Dannil gets too hot-headed and needs a talking to that would be too harsh from the Banker. He likes Eben to be involved in heavy business negotiations, as the man’s innate savvy for trade and deals is invaluable to Verik.

* Dannil LeVane: Dannil is perhaps Verik’s concern as one he promoted too early, but given the age of his clerks and initiates after Thomas left north, he had little choice. Dannil is wildly gifted and devoted, but his Galtan fire and occasional arrogance is chafing to Verik’s style. Dannil is Verik’s most gifted orator, and uses him to give many of the sermons and teachings, making him popular with many parishioners. Verik hopes some age, seasoning and Eben’s guidance will temper the young man into a truly stellar leader of Abadar in a few years.

* Ethen Hoefurrow: Now a Junior Clerk, young Ethen is Verik’s pride as one of his first Initiates from Newhaven to have gained the Keys. Verik uses him as a symbol of hard work and accomplishment to the other Initiates, and finds he has a knack for plans and architecture – as such he puts him under direction of Galen Lavill when other duties are done, hoping it will produce a second fine architect one day.

* Petyr Mikhalia: Young Petyr did not have the aptitude and temperament to gain the Keys as a Clerk, but the scrappy Brevian orphan always had a place in Verik’s heart as one of his first Initiates. Verik hopes he has found a good calling for Petyr in his wagon company as journeyman to trade and business, and thinks the bitterness Petyr had for not gaining the Keys has dissipated with an avenue much more to his true calling.

* Bertram Dakkone: Veteran Bertram leads the Keysworn Guards for Verik and has been his guardsman since he arrived with Thomas Quiss from Absalom. Bertram though is intending to retire in a year, and looks to have his own house and settle down to enjoy his life in Newhaven. Verik is glad of this, but is concerned on a suitable replacement for the leadership of the Keysworn, as none of the other men are seasoned enough to lead them from Verik’s perspective.

* Viktor Akarius: A new NPC, Viktor is Verik’s man to lead the Vaultmen and assign the rosters and schedules for their deployments. Viktor is no-nonsense and matter-of-fact, but handles the Vaultmen in the manner that Verik wants them to be handled. He goes on the most sensitive of engagements for Verik, and can be relied on to get the jobs done. Compassion is not his forte, however, so he would not make a good candidate to earn his Keys and become a Keysworn after Bertram Dakkone retires.

* Galen Lavill: Poor Galen Lavill is the architectural pride of Sanctuary, but is feeling woeful these days after having been left by Dominic Kobach’s daughter for a more dashing Brevian knight of one of the minor houses. Verik always knew the Kobach girl would be trouble for the trusting and kind Galen, and has taken efforts to try and get the man out of his doldrums. Well-to-do and desired by a dozen ladies of the city, Galen only has eyes for his lost love for now, which confounds and worries Verik. As he knows he cannot “substitute” another for a broken heart, he has put Ethen to work with him often, hoping the mentorship will give Galen new purpose and interest…or at least take his mind off of being jilted.

Surprises & Twists:

* The “Galt Speech” of Taxfest 4711:
Verik had long been incensed by the wanton chaos and atrocities committed in Galt, which was once a bastion of learning and innovation. Heightened by conversations held with the Galtan refugees (including his friend Aleza Bellavieu), his Clerk Dannil LeVane and Willas Gunderson, Verik decided he had to speak out on the “evils” of the Galtan Revolution. On Taxfest Day of the 15th of Gozran 4711, he gave a speech on this topic which was quite fierce and inspiring, in which he encouraged all civil-minded and orderly Galtans surviving to find a new home-in-exile in Newhaven, where they could prosper without persecution and paranoia. He then proclaimed a “glorious day” would commence when Galtan exiles would march back in force and retake Galt for the restoration of Order and Light, with the full might of his Bank supporting that initiative with direct support. Verik thought it a good speech and little more, but did not count on the fact that word spread down the Mivon route to the East Sellen. Weeks and months later a host of refugees came up the route to settle in Newhaven and meet the “inspiration” of the speech. Milani revolutionaries were split on praising or cursing Verik Jarrow for his words (depending on their views and factions over Galt), with some threats delivered by letter. Worse still, a chilling letter came from an anonymous agent of Galt that any action by the Banker would be met with his delivery to the Gray Gardeners. Even worse still was a letter to Verik of praise by a Hellknight Order paralictor (officer), pledging terms of support and alliance if the Banker was intent on raising an army to retake Galt. Verik honestly did not know which letter was worse in his mind, and shunned any other correspondence afterwards. The notoriety, however, cannot be erased.

* News of Verik’s Father in 4712:
Verik receives magical correspondence from the Grand Bank in Absalom that his father, Alban Jarrow, had passed away from old age and illness. This was received by Verik with sadness but other mixed feelings as well, for Verik was never close to his father and felt the man had little affection for him. Youngest of five sons by a fair margin and with his mother passing away when he was only six, Verik felt he had little value to the Jarrow family – his interest and acceptance into the Abadarian ranks the only time his father had a “real” conversation with him. Years later, not even when Verik was to leave Absalom for the journey to Restov did Alban Jarrow seek him out, then busy with a family trade negotiation with his eldest two sons.

Weeks later, Verik receives a dry and formal letter-and-parcel from his eldest brother Aldius of his portion of the inheritance and little other news of the family – Aldius was eighteen years older than Verik and had little affection or use for the youngest brother either. Of the other four brothers, only the older brother closest to him in age by five years – Dominic – writes a personal letter to Verik, expressing his condolences and then announcing that he leaves on a journey to their distant kin in Alkenstar later that month; though he will be gone from Absalom for nearly a year, Dominic writes that he would hope to come up the Sellen and visit his youngest brother for a time in the year 4713.

* Invitation to the Archbanker Vinodragov…Accepted!
Verik’s efforts to solidify the Mivon trade route have meant increased contact with merchants in New Stetven, and this in turn has called for more correspondence to the Archbanker Vinodragov on those actions. As the “new” Bank of Sanctuary settled into full operation and a new fledgling Bank of Olegsgrav was built in 4711, Verik felt more confident in his efforts in Newhaven. He wanted to invite the Banker of Silverhall to see his works and discuss preferred trade with Lebeda lands, but could not do so while ignoring the Archbanker and his primary influence in New Stetven. As a polite formality, Verik invited the Bankers of all major Brevoy towns to visit, subject to their Archbanker’s blessing (of course). He also invited the detestable Banker Demesceau of Restov as a way to not make tensions with Restov trade worse with the pretext of a snub. Finally, he invited Archbanker Vinodragov.

Verik expected most Bankers would decline, and of course most did. Mercifully, Banker Demesceau never responded at all, which was just as well to Verik. However, Archbanker Vinodragov shockingly accepted the invitation, subject to a travel date that would be amenable to both sides. While that date has not been set yet by Vinodragov, Verik knows he must provide hospitality and entreat with the Archbanker once again in his home of Sanctuary…something he has not had to deal with since the aborted trial of Nikolai and the Battle of Dragonshead.

Kingdom Building Recommendations:

Newhaven Settlements:
* NEW Settlement on Candlemere Lake shore to anchor southern trade route and hold Candlemere Island nearby. Could be a “wilder” town than what has been seen in Sanctuary or Olegsgrav, settled by
* NEW Settlement in Narlmarches at Elk Ruins to highlight the role of Erastil moving to the rural areas of the realm, gives Jhod a mayorship role, provides some expansion on the western flank

Sanctuary Buildings: More Houses or Tenements (as appropriate, we can offset the unrest with other buildings), Orphanage (former Keyhouse) in unspecific block, Graveyard (for Pharasma church) in the “temple block”, Park (gardens for Shelyn church), Magical Streetlamps (for city), Dancing Hall in “wharf block” for flavor, Academy Upgrade (Harborage House library building), Library* (after Academy upgrade, for Borodin’s fighting school and society), Inn (for an upscale locale), Barracks* OR Watchtower* (more defense, becomes city watch HQ), City Walls*, Cistern* (at Town Hall), maybe Exotic Artisan.

If 2nd District opens, also Stockyard (gives farm boost on consumption), Smithy (for better armor), Stables (for security on building cavalry), Granary*, Jail*, Hospital (for Jemini’s mentally afflicted), Tenement (for Sootscale Quarter), Dump*

Olegsgrav Buildings: More Houses (as appropriate), Guildhall Upgrade (from Trade Shop)

Character Build:

(i.e. level-up notes, gear changes, crafting notes, living and lifestyle changes, other stuff that changes the character in a stat block way, etc.)
* Retrain Craft Wand for Craft Magic Arms and Armor
* 7th Lvl Feat: Quick Draw

I am first up on the murder board at the moment, so there's an excellent chance I will get something this week. If this happens, I may be AWOL for a few days.

Jemini's interim development:

Is not particularly full of surprises, she tows the line that she's been on for the last years.

Politics
She's open-minded and goes to considerable lengths not to interfere with the growth of the nation in the capable hands of the council. She's always had faith in Verik's ability to sensibly and organically grow what he'd refer to as civilization. Furthermore she supports Elsir's promotion to the council, his exceedingly keen intellect and ability to divine time are a boon - and even though their time together has been relatively short she's come to trust in the elf's judgments.

Jemini promotes NewHaven in Brevoy; seeking to capture the imagination of the people as a land of fresh opportunity. Especially for skilled artisans of all crafts NewHaven is painted as a portrait of desirability.

Among the gentry and nobility the shiny new gem on the political scene remains a matter of great interest and Verik has his hands well full keeping Jemini out of perceived daliances and schemes with various Brevoy factions - while at the same time he finds no better way to curb and manage the steady stream of formal and informal visits of nobles than to throw Jemini at them.

Jemini tries to leverage Elsir's elven heritage - along with the newly acquired elven fortress of old - to develop a rapport with Kyonin. She encourages the ancient fortress to be restored and form the center point of a new settlement. If possible she wants to increase the presence of other races in NewHaven and the elves are a particularly attractive proposition. If Kyonin is not directly interested in fostering a political relationship, she tries to promote it via proxy by encouraging a population of forlorn to settle at the elven fortress.

On a more personal level she insists on mandatory education for children between 6 and 12 years old; afterward the more traditional systems of apprenticeship and family-sponsored education take over. The six years of mandatory education are state-sponsored (which may require a bit of a tax burden), but Jemini goes to great lengths to realize such a system.

Social
Jemini remains a visual constant in the land. Much to Verik's chargrin who'd rather see her attend the council and paper work more frequently, Jemini is warm and approachable - frequently seen about Sanctuary, eyeing the developments of the city and its people. Across the land in general she usually finds (or makes) time to seek out other points of interest such as Olegsgrav, but also individual farms, mines, quarries - occasionally she'll also accompany one of Zander's patrols.

Religion
Jemini is innately open to religious cosmopolitanism (and Verik's been managing that quite fine), within Sanctuary she promotes Sarenrae's presence. Furthermore she sponsors the development of a small Iroran monastry somewhere in the country side. (Perhaps treat it as a Fort but with only +1 to Defense instead of +4, but at no increased Consumption cost to represent self-sufficiency.)

Personal
Jemini engages herself to finally have her mysterious benefactor, Doctor Atago, revived/raised/reincarnated.

Mechanical
For level 7 I'm considering the feat Hands of Valor (Inner Sea Gods)

M Brownin (Half Pale Skin/Half Dark Skin) Healer 8/Merchant 3

Seriously can't think of any other moves at this point for Akiros. Even Guidance is redundant with Prayer still in effect, yes?

Maybe Akiros could try a few cheerleader somersaults to rally the gang?

I'll do what I can with the bow, Akiros. Thanks.

I like Jemini's development plans a lot Lorekeeper. What's interesting that I hadn't fully considered is that Jemini is really pushing to be an active "head of state" by being out there as the visible, tangible leader ... and not as much is she trying to be the pure political wrangler in the Council. That's an interesting point as to what she's focusing on.

It's also interesting to me that Jemini, by being "tied to the Brevians" as Verik sees it negatively in some ways, is really playing the political game as she knows it to keep them dancing - something Verik doesn't really fully understand.

I'm glad you mentioned Irori - as a LG power I wanted to reference them in my interim doc but figured they may not have a presence in the city based on their history and background (as per Inner Sea Gods), so I didn't include them. I'm glad you did and I think the notion of a Monastery-type building or reduced Fort-type hex improvement is really a great idea. If that happens, I'd reference that Verik has a standing seat on the Religious Conclave meetings for them, but perhaps they rarely or never attend.

Ultimately Jemini's goal isn't so much to create a nation; but to stop Choral. She's decided kingdom building will work best for that. She's not all that into the fine details that come with actually fostering a civilization the way Verik is; instead she goes about things the way she's learned as a scion of House Lebeda. The greatest merchants trade in knowledge, and to be able to sell absolutely anything you only need to make sure that the customer wants what you're selling.

That wouldn't be particularly wise of them, which I have a hard time picturing adherents of Irori do. Instead, I imagine they're attending religiously (heh) - but hardly ever vote or push an agenda. Usually silent listeners, unless asked in which case they offer measured consideration.

Berrin's 2 year interim

Professional and political
Berrin will first and foremost be pushing for the raising and enlargment of armies, caring not a whit for how the neighbors might perceive it and if asked to comment he'll tell them that 'They'd better get onboard and strengthen their own walls. Chorol is coming and that winter b@&!! too.' He'll invite any ally to come train with Newhaven and push for military alliances and cooperation with all neighbors, Pitax included if given the chance.

He'll push the council for:
The enlargement of Newhaven's First.
The raising of;
Archers.
A unit of rangers (militarize the wardens under Zander as scouts and scirmishers)
Conscript clerics from Verik.
A second army.
The enlargement of the main cavalry.
The raising of a second cavalry (The Generals Own, charged with patrolling the country side, not tax collectors or caravan guards but bandit/monster hunters and law keepers under Akiros).
Restore Candlemere Keep and maintain garrison there.
Wall's for Sanctuary.

He'll work the army non-stop in training and preparation and push for smithies and artisans who can help better outfit the soldiers.

Kingdom wise Berrin will push for;
The expansion of the border to Mivon and Varnhold, roads and a town on the Mivon-Newhaven border (garrison/walls/barraks and a standing army).
He'll push for roads and irigations, mines and quarries anything that produces food, resources or generates revenue to enlarge the army is golden in Berrin's opinion.
He'll oppose Verik's demand for registration of divine and arcane casters just 'cause it dosn't sit right with him that any man should have to register and be monitored by any body of government just for his vocation, he won't mind if the marshal or spymaster keeps tabs but open registration is just a touch to close to violating a mans rights for his tastes.
He'll put gold into the opening of 'Talking Heads' and several other temples to Cayden Cailen (a.k.a. pubs, irking Verik is reward enough but personal revenue is good too). The clerics can fend for themselves and earn their own coin, just rewards for just work, though they'll be welcome into the army if they can show discipline and an affinity for soldiering.

Personal stuff
PC's;
I don't see Berrin forming any deeper, special bond with any PC's than hasn't already been established. He'll probably spend most his time with Zander and Akiros, coordinating with the Marshal and Warden. He'll enjoy the occasional drink with them both, be more accepting of Nikolai and more irked with Verik as his church comes more and more predominant in Newhaven (lawmen? really?) Like all Brevic Berrin has an innate distrust of Adabar (he's after your gold in the end), reveres Pharasma when celebrating life and mourning death and looks to Cayden for the way a man should live. He'll see Elsir as even stranger than Tandlara and will be put off by elves in general until he joins them at a party. Borodin will be an object of interest and he'll study the scrolls Gunderson wrote for his testament, Berrin will try to approach Borodin and try to wean more details from the future; How did he die? How many children did he have? What of Aylene or Maegar?

Relationships NPC's;
Berrin will press Aylene to move to the country when she get's pregnant, pushing a dream of a horse ranch where they could grow food and raise kids, and receives a solid thunk on the head for his efforts and a night on the couch.
Maegar Myrdal is born.

Surprices & Twists;

Berrin's mom shows up, spitting at any offer of support from anyone especially Berrin and the bank. Opens up a bakery after earning gold from selling fresh buns on the market square to by a cart to which led to another cart and a hired hand which grew to a bakery with several employees, their main revenue coming from urchins peddling buns at the city- and castle gates, the market square and the pier. She instantly loves Aylene and young Maegar, fretting over them and shooting Berrin evil eyes in between, she'll be dubious of Berrin, not believing that he's turned his life around, she'll come around eventually if the Winter Queen doesn't get Berrin first.

Man Sigz...love the interim post tonight, but Berrin is just doggin' poor Verik! Where's the love man? ;)

I can see the two butting heads more on the Council and political aspects. Now Verik sees Berrin as a close personal friend, and the business aspects of politics and the realm's affairs as separate. Should I run with it then that Berrin has more of a "rift" with Verik because of two years of politics, or is it more of a thing that "what happens at Council stays at Council" with them?

Well, seeing as Berrin has grown to love each and every one of the founders a "what happens at Council stays at Council" would be the right approach. I read somewhere that Brevic are naturally mistrusting of Adabar and the church and I just thought I'd play on that a bit. That and Verik and Berrin just have a different view on life, Verik being the city raised and Berrin the small-towner who never got a good impression on big cities. Berrin respects Verik the man but doesn't love his god (though he's suitably (dis)respectful), Jhod and Erastil are more down Berrin's lane.

They might have the occasional falling-out in council which will lead to one or both needing to cool off but I'm thinking outside they'll be friends as long as they don't discuss matters they disagree on, maybe some stiffness a day or two after an argument, but a stiffness that thaws quickly.

And, no offence, but Berrin and Aylene would rather call a Pharasmite than an Adabarian to deliver Maegar into the world.

Edit; Oh yeah, btw. I had some thoughts on building a horse ranch myself and use Valnyr for breeding, a family ranch or somesuch, but it didn't sit right with me when I thought of Aylene's reactions to that, hence the knock on the head. Maybe Verik wants to use him on his ranches? Berrin would be on-board to invest in such an endeavor. Berrin would be open to any investments really, as long as they don't touch to close with the running of the army.

Ha! Religion and Politics! You can't win, even in a game world.

While Borodin would understand that Verik is trying to make a better world through civilization, he would also have a more similar world view to Berrin. Growing up as an orphan on the streets of Mivon, Borodin would have seen the rotten underbelly of civilized society.

He is all about freedoms and the ability to choose for oneself as long as they don't infringe upon others rights. Caster registration would chafe on Borodin, who would try to block its passing if he had any influence in the council.

I'm a really stoic monk fan, literally 90% of my characters are monks (especially in non-pbp). Jemini is one of the rare exceptions. And she was originally intended to be a paladin/monk but that didn't happen (yet?). I probably paint them in too bright a light, but that's probably okay too... ;)

Verik of Abadar wrote:

It is a little silly good, the way Jemini is built at least. I am seriously considering adding Protector's Strike at level 9, then Jemini has the ability to transfer her Charisma as AC and Attack bonus to a different character. Really brings the best out of people.

...

If DM Barcas allows it, I'd want to take mythic levels for Jemini. Not because of any useful exploits, but to pick up "low-impact" abilities like Longevity, Mystic Sustenance - and specifically Divine Source. I really like the idea of her essentially gaining sainthood and slowly transcending over time. Not to mention the look on Verik's face when he realizes that there are divine casters that believe in Jemini so strongly that they are able to cast spells granted by her.

PS - hahahaha oh my word. What a stylish finish versus the wisp. "I shall just go and double-crit the thing while nobody is watching"

Oh yeah, I'm sensing the anti-Verik get-on-the-train-band-wagon!

Seriously as the player speaking, I'm fine with Verik being a foil for many of the other characters in the interim period - to a certain extent anyway - as it relates to the politics and Founder's Council stuff. I think Verik makes a good foil for pushing the LG/LN viewpoint and I've played him to where his perceived arrogance and "I'm right you're not" elements come out the strongest in these interim periods. He's probably going to be his most jerky when embroiled in these week-to-week/month-to-month trials of realm building. That, coupled with misunderstandings about what his "brand" of Abadarian influence really stands for (real or imagined), makes for good conflict.

There's a point of course where it can run too deep and reach a point-of-no-return. The main example of that is what happened with Verik and Jhod in the NPC arena. I think Steven and I handled character conflict well with Nikolai v. Verik in the last couple of years, so if we want to up the conflict ante between Verik and a character that's fine, though I think those players need to set some private-message boundaries and make sure things are good...and of course ensure that the characters don't get so out of whack that they can't operate together in a combat or stay in proximity.

Here's a possible example of something that, politics aside, could get things riled up if the characters wanted to go there...

Spoiler:
Even before Meowzebub left, Zander was not biting on any of the Orlovsky legacy stuff, and really only professed in his thoughts that he desired to renew his brand of Milani "reforms" in Newhaven if given a chance. Well the Milani faction has come to town in the interim (maybe even Zander's mentor and foster father, who knows?), and it seems to me Zander will gravitate heavily to their faction. Which will force some serious conflict between Zander and Verik on developments of the Council. Which may lead to a break of friendship between them if it gets hardened enough, because there's not much anymore in camaraderie that holds them together. Which...could mean the other characters would take sides. Who would take sides? Who would try to bridge the gap? What would that mean if a second rift opened up on the Founder's Council after the Verik v. Jhod summer with an increasingly radical and vocal Zander?

I don't necessarily suggest this as it could be a bridge too far, but it's an example of how two years can change relationships.

Anyway, outside of the political and religious arenas, Verik is involved in several investment enterprises - the horses thing is a minor stake for him as that's his tie-in with what Aleza Bellavieu is doing (and gets him his riding skill for 7th level). His major personal stake is in "Mercadi's Wagons" which will make him PHAT RICH - he's going to have wagons and carriages of quality all over the trade routes to Mivon and Varnhold. Good way to chop down some of these stupid trees in the Narlmarches! Verik's face on the back door of every wagon! Otherwise I could see him in a 'competition' with Berrin on his upscale Inn competing against the more seedier (and popular with the common man) tavern of Berrin. Could be fun!

Posting separately on this as it's a slightly different topic.

Besides the interest I have with Verik and other characters, I'm also interested in how the other characters are changing relationships or forging new ones with each other.

For example...

What will be the Berrin-Nikolai-Akiros-Borodin relationship as the heavy martials and Founders of the realm? Do Berrin and Nikolai become more friendly as they have bled and fought together and have the warrior's code? Berrin and Borodin could clearly have a connection (and both are NG), but how do they see Akiros? Akiros, after all, aside from Verik is the one whom would mostly adhere to the harder nature of laws, and he holds the line to uphold them with his people. In some respects Akiros would be less compassionate on the implementation of the law than Verik. Does this rankle Berrin or Borodin or any of the others? Does Akiros put in requests for laws that he feels are appropriate, and if so would that create a dispute? Yet Berrin and Akiros will both be fathers, so do they have ties in that capacity? How will the others mesh the idea of Elsir being both a Pathfinder Lodge leader and a Magister, or do they even grasp what that means? Does Elsir get chummy with any other characters besides Willas? Berrin states the strange nature of the elves could be offputting for his part in getting to know Elsir, so does Elsir remain apart from others over the two years or find ties-that-bind with various Founders? Is Jemini truly above it all in her desire to be the symbolic and real leader of her beloved people, or does she confide fears and misgivings to a character? Just Kesten and her own family? Does she try to understand her connection to Zander, or is that done and done now?

These and other questions besides. I'm very much interested to see what comes out of some of this.

Note that I'm not asking much of what Nikolai is doing, because it seems Steven will have big development changes for him that could change a lot of relationship options. I'm guessing some of that will be about alignment shift (can he really stay CN after all of this growth and understanding)? Is Akiros still his loyal friend through thick and thin, or does the LG nature of Akiros (redeemed through Iomedae) put them at some distance?

So just some questions to spur discussion - nothing has to be set in stone, but the interim is really the biggest change to the characters since Stagfall and its aftermath.

Feat: Arcane Strike
Favored Bonus: +1 Skill Point
Skills: Perception +1, Fly +1, Knowledge Engineering +1, Stealth +1, Knowledge Planes +1, Acrobatics +1, Sense Motive +1

Not to mention - how does the darkest timeline affect their interactions in the long term?

As I said, Berrin will try to approach Borodin over the years, how Borodin reacts is up to Borodin but I'm open up to friendship even if Berrin views him as an oddity at the moment (he's from the future!? Crikey!) 'till he's had a chance to wrap his head around timetravel.

Zander will remain a good friend and drinking buddy, a confidant as was established in New Beginings though with his current NPC status I don't know how much I can build on that.

I see Zander-Akiros-Berrin spending a lot of time together coordinating and planing defenses and tactics.

Berrin and Akiros have reached some understanding between each other despite Akiros's rigid nature and Berrin's roguish one. They both know that each has Newhaven's best interest at heart and I can see them becoming fast friends if Akiros is onboard with that. They have so much in common that I see opportunities for friendly rivalries everywhere (swordplay, horseback riding, how much their babies weigh and how old they were when they said 'Dada'). As too setting laws, Berrin will oppose Akiros just as staunchly as he opposes Verik if he pushes for something that Berrin sees as 'too much'.

As of this battle Berrin has officially taken a liking to Nikolai and I imagine they'll frequent the same watering holes (I'm trying to get into business with his soon-to-be cohort right?) I don't know how open and free they'll be to each other though, Nikolai has shown himself to be a serious man with a lot on his mind and Berrin is simpler and more care-free I think. I'm open to forming friendship though as to the darkest timeline, after having read the scrolls Berrin will subconsciously grow to be wary of Nikolai and look for signs of mood swings or his slipping into evil but mostly he will be looking for ways to not die when they battle the Winter Queen.

Berrin will go to Elsir to try and wrap his head around this timetraveling business, to discuss the pathfinders knowledge of fey, how to battle them and most of all; how to resist them.

As for Verik-Berrin personal relationship growing colder, Berrin will mourn the loss of it if it comes to that. He will visit with Verik and try to get him drunk on occasion too and carry on like nothing had changed 'till he's given clear signs that their relationship isn't what it was.

Yep that's what I was hoping for and seemed likely during Verik's ill fated attempts to speak it in public hehe.

Areas of Development

Having trained for many years as an Aldori swordlord himself, Akiros would be very interested in helping Borodin open an Aldori fighting school.

To compliment Borodin's Magus society Akiros will start an Oracle society. He will be primarily focused on Battle Oracles, but all types will be welcome. Should Jemini wish to aid in this endeavour he would welcome her help. The society would be closely linked with the Shine/Temple to Iomeade. The primary purpose of the society will be to help prepare Newhaven and her citizens for the oncoming war with Choral, and protect the nation and her people in general.

However, due to his many other commitments, this endeavour will be last on the list of his priorities and time available to spend on it. He will search for someone appropriate to take over the general running of the society.

Akiros will very much wish to have the Iomeade shrine upgraded to a full, if small, temple. He is still on the search for a priest or priestess to run it. In the interim though he does his best to minister to those who come to seek Iomedaes guidance.

Professional & Political:

Akiros does all he can to stay out of politics as much as possible. He fully meets his duties as Warden Marshall and Founder, of course, yet he has no stomach for or interest in, the endless debate and squabble some founders seem to revel in.

Also very important to him is his duty as "Shining Sowrd of Iomeade's Justice". Yet he is still not quite sure just what such a duty entails. Although he has not spoke of this to anyone, not even Elspeth, he feels that he is being made ready for something, something important, he just does not yet know what that something may be.

Akiros fully supports Elsir and Borodin being made full founders.

In general, Akiros supports pretty much any idea or motion which will help protect Newhaven and her people. He will move to block encroachment by Brevian nobility or any moves by any of the founders he sees as seeking more personal power. Areas where he and Verik might butt heads might be increased rules and restrictions on personal rights and freedoms. Akiros firmly believes in Law, yet he believes it is a tool to serve the people, not the other way around.

They will also likely have issues from time to time over Verik's Vaultmen. Akiros does like the Banker, though he keeps a close eye on the Abadarian's seemingly never ending desire for more power, control and influence.

Akiros fully supports all Berrin's plans for increasing Newhaven's military strength. He is particularly interested in the second cavalry of monster hunters and law keepers. However he will move to have it's Name adjusted ; ) Likely something simple like...The 2nd cavalry.

Akiros will push hard for the increase and further training of the guardsman. Basically he'd like them to be a second army whose main task is to protect the city from all threats, external and internal.

He will also work with Berrin on training a large militia.

Personal Stuff

Other than spending time with Elspeth and his family, Akiros doesn't have much of a personal life outside his duties. Berrin, Zander and Borodin would be the founders he spends the most time with. I can completely see Berrin's and Akiro's children playing together, and as well I can see Aylene and Elspeth getting along, having both grown up noble, but having little interest in the typical interests and character of your average Breven noble. I also completely agree with this
"Berrin and Akiros have reached some understanding between each other despite Akiros's rigid nature and Berrin's roguish one. As too setting laws, Berrin will oppose Akiros just as staunchly as he opposes Verik if he pushes for something that Berrin sees as 'too much'."

As for Nikolai, their relationship will always be a strange one. They have been through more together than any other two founders, and most of their past consists of things neither of them would prefer to think of. Plus, they were once leader and sworn follower, yet are now equals. Akiros knows Nikolai's true potential though and will do all he can to support that growth and possibility. In the end, they are, and always will be, friends.

Akiros is a simple man at heart, and has little need or interest for anything in his life beyond his family and his duty. While not overly demonstrative in public, he is deeply and passionately in love with his wife. He also adores his children (I would like it if they had twins first, a boy and a girl, and then another girl, a little younger than Berrin's Maegar. They have no plans or desire to have more than that. Home is the place where the stern and duty bound Marshal can drop his iron mask and relax, and play with his progeny. While still stern with them in areas he feels are important, like duty, honour, respect and physical training, he's also thrilled to be 'horsey' and storyteller and playmate.

Akiros has built a modest home for them, sturdy, well protected, far enough from the city for some privacy but still a quick ride to the castle. Akiros' family knows how important his job is, and how much duty means to him, so they accept that sometimes he cannot be home for long stretches, or needs to sleep in his office occasionally. He makes every effort though to be home with his family as much as he possibly can. Nothing in the world means more to him.

Kydal is definitely a part of his family. The children adore him, and, if anything, the powerful, fierce, intelligent warhorse is even more fond of them. He also makes a pretty great babysitter.

Surprises & Twists:
- More trouble with Elspeth's brother, Alexey
- Possible intrigue with House Garess. Maybe not having an heir and looking to Elspeth or her children?
- Some relatives of Akiro's slain former Aldori swordlord brothers, or Sarah and Matthias, seeking him and/or Nikolai out for revenge and/or justice
- Perhaps a run-in with his evil cousin Korias (from THIS post where he has flashbacks and becomes an Oracle)
- Something to do with his Omen(Faith) feat?

Final Note:

If the Dark Future does indeed come about, I can see the reason for Akiros not being in it as that, at some crucial, critical juncture, he sacrificed himself to save others, or for the good of all. This is very much something in line with his character.

And, with all of that, I must now make an announcement I'm finding it quite difficult to make. I'm sure some, if not all of you won't be too surprised though as it's been coming on slowly for some time now.

I'm taking an indefinite leave from PbP.

I've been playing these wonderful games online for seven or eight years now, and they have brought me an immense amount of fun, creative challenge, entertainment and inspired flights of fancy. I simply do not have the words to express my deep gratitude for each and every one of my fellow players, and most especially all the hard working GMs I have had the great pleasure and privilege to game with. Thank you all, so incredibly much.

While I still do very much enjoy these games and collaborative creative fiction, upon some deep reflection, over some time now, I feel I need to concentrate my energies in some different directions. Now is the time for it.

It also seems like a perfect time to leave Akiros to your tender mercies. Please do take good care of him. I have honestly loved writing him.

I may be back! I just have no idea when, or if at all. I am sure I'll still skulk around and keep abreast of the game though. So please keep up the stellar writing!

I consider you all friends, and I wish you all the very best. Thanks for putting up with me all these years!

Fare thee well, my boon companions and, as the Elvish saying goes,
"Merry meet, merry part, and merry meet again!"
