DM Barcas - Kingmaker: New Beginnings
(Inactive) Game Master
Isaac Duplechain
An expedition from Brevoy attempts to tame the Stolen Lands, while civil war brews in the north between the nobles houses and a bandit king rises in the wilderness.
I could perhaps help out with Zander. I know Taisper was going to ask a friend, so if that doesn't go through, keep me in mind as an alternate.
Taking over an existing character is tough, but the story break here would give some time to get up to speed, and I would have picked Zander over Verik so that is cool.
I am a known element to most of you, so there is that. And I lurk here enough that it I should go ahead and try to make it official, instead of just on the sister CC thread.
Hi Berrin/Sigz! Saw your OOC on the other forum but forgot to add it to my post there :)
Just a quick Verik update - I've gone through the majority of this OOC forum now and made a couple of updates for Verik on the profile - looks like he had three Hero Points and not one (from a reference in March/April), has 5035 XP with a medium XP progression rate and needed to have his GP updated from what Jemini gave out from Bishop Vinodragov's "contribution" to the party. It says he's loaned out 460 GP to Zander, but I'm not sure if that is part of his total or in addition to it.
There's a reference that Verik was loaned Jhod's magical morningstar, but if it's fine I'd like to say that Verik gave it back to Jhod before the battle. When we're back to Oleg's, I'm going to have Verik give up the morningstar altogether in favor of a heavy mace and RP that out a bit.
If there's anything I've missed on the profile sheet just let me know, and also if anyone has any home-grown sayings or reference material for Abadar beyond the Wiki I've Googled, please feel free to send it to vorduvai@gmail.com. Thanks!
Meowzebub, I've messaged Kacy on Facebook to see if he consents to passing Zander over to you. Once he messages me back, I'll let you know.
We are just about done with Chapter 1. I'm going to start a whole new thread for Chapter 2, so be prepared to start from scratch! When I start that (probably by the end of the week), you will be level 4 with appropriate wealth. (Add 25% for Verik's Craft Wondrous Item feat.) Jemini, for reasons of being dead, will not have any gear until she gets resurrected. You can tweak your character within reason, subject to approval.
The starting date of Chapter 2 will be 15 Gozran 4709. For Taxfest of that year, your new capital city will host a great banquet to celebrate the formal recognition of your new kingdom by the Houses of Brevoy and several other nations. The heads of those nations, or at least their representatives, will come for this party. Depending on who you favor and offend, you may gain more BP.
Familiarize yourself with the rules I have posted here. We'll build the kingdom (which you have to name now) for 12 turns together to get a feel for the system. (Again, if you don't want to know the math behind the system, that's fine. At least have a general idea of the basic concepts, like Economy, Stability, and Loyalty, and the leadership positions.)
The Stolen Lands are mapped out here. The battle occurred at C13, while Oleg's is at C12 and the Stag Lord's fort is at I15.
I added a few cities to even out the populations of each House: Whiteseat for Lebeda, Medhold for Medyved, and New Orlovs for Orlovsky. Each of those is the 'capital' of their respective House.
If you all are okay with it, I'd like for Verik to name the battle on 16th Gozran, and perhaps we can add it as a kingdom holiday. In fine Verik fashion I'd think he'd try to name it something like "The Battle of the Stag Lord's Final Fall" or something equally unwieldy, but as it spreads with the people it gets shortened and becomes "Battle of Stagfall" in remembrance of the founding of the realm.
Also, he'd spend his funds in those next couple of months to have a small shrine and memorial built on the site where the SL and Jemini fell, incorporating a tree sapling planted by Jhod as well as something to mark the spot where Tandlara's circle of death endures ... and he'd have the graves of the fallen marked by real engraved gravestones. If you're fine with that, I can take that total out of his new 4th Lvl total funds.
I'm gunning for Spymaster. Might seem strange, but its Int based, and I really like the idea of being quite a background character. Using magic and informants to keep an eye on the human kingdom over the span of centuries.
Importantly, I just realised we can move my bonus, my Int is going to be damned good, so that gives us a nice amount of fine control.
It seems that Taisper has the highest charisma at a +2 bonus, a mad king? muhahahaww!! That would be funnny. After him comes Berrin and Verik with a +1, though Verik could use his lvl 4 stat bonus to bump it to +2.
I was aiming for general with Berrin, beeing the local hero sounds about right for him ;) Growing fat with wine and food as he whores and hunts sounds like his forté.
As for naming the kingdom I think Haven was the most popular of the names offered, maybe Newhaven?
Festivals (Cost & effect doubled by Arena; cost halved by Theater)
1. None: -1 Loyalty, No Cost
2. 1/year: +1 Loyalty, 1 BP
3. 6/year: +2 Loyalty, 2 BP
4. 12/year: +3 Loyalty, 4 BP
5. 24/year: +4 Loyalty, 8 BP
I'm also running into an issue as I develop the noble Houses, which is that Stability and Loyalty are far outpaced by the Command DC. I think that I'm going to solve this issue by having standing armies increase both Stability and Loyalty by their CR.
What's the loot list on TSL, again? Taisper would be very interested in anything he could use, though I'm quite doubtful he'd be able to lay any claim on things. The bow will go to Zander, of course, and any sort of rings of protection or any such should go to Tandlara, and armor to Corwin, as well as other big swords. But I still want to double-check.
I was aiming for general with Berrin, beeing the local hero sounds about right for him ;) Growing fat with wine and food as he whores and hunts sounds like his forté.
Hehe when I read this I kept thinking about Mark Addy's role as Robert Baratheon in Game of Thrones. "Boy go fetch me a breastplate stretcher and be quick about it!"
Well I could see Verik going either way with High Priest or Treasurer, both from a RP perspective and a Kingdom need perspective. Not sure what is needed more early on, but my gut feeling is that Verik would need to take High Priest, or else the Bishop is going to send some schmuck to mess with us after his 10000gp cash investment.
"As for the type of government we should choose," intones Verik in an all-knowing voice to the rest, "it is very clear what we should choose. Clearly the Manual of Building states that the most effective form of government for us is..." POOF! "OW!"
Suddenly out of nowhere, Verik's alternate-dimension evil-twin Kirev appears, complete with beard and mustache, wearing a sign of anarchy. He shoves Verik out of the way.
"Whatever poofdah, go work on your melee skills or somethin' eh?" Kirev turns to the rest of the party. "Well you can't expect to wield supreme executive power just 'cause some Inquisitor threw a Stag Lord sword at you! Now let me tell ya how this is going to go. We're an anarcho-syndicalist commune. We take it in turns to act as a sort of executive officer for the week. But all the decisions of that officer have to be ratified at a special biweekly meeting, by a simple majority in the case of purely internal affairs, but by a two-thirds majority in the case of more..." POOF!
Verik finishes casting Dispel Chaos on his other-dimensional twin and wipes his hands.
Well with Jemini gone the chaotics have a small window to push for our anarcho-synicalist commune :)
I think Corwin's most likely role is Marshall and I could have fun with that (partly assuming Zander would go Warden). Another option is Royal Assas... i mean Royal Troubleshooter / Champion which would be doing the dirty jobs noone else wants to do. I'm torn between the possibilities offered by each.
Wasn't here for the naming discussions. Haven sounds like a fine name for Corwin, perfect even.
[b]'We need a steward until Jemini returns. I'm all for reccomending Berrin, he kept his head screwed on during the fight, and he doesn't really want to be king, so we shouldn't have any problem with relinquishing the throne, he'll probably be glad to do it.
@Meowzebub Kacy said that he's still really busy and that you're welcome to Zander. I don't think he's coming back.
You really want Bokken involved in the leadership process? As much as I enjoy playing him, I don't think he'd want any part of it. He's retired, remember? Plus, imagine him at the council meetings...
Requested
General Berrin (+4 Str)
High Priest Verik (+4 Wis)
Marshal Corwin (+4 Str)
Spymaster Tandlara (+4 Int)
Unfilled
Ruler Jemini (upon return), Kesten? He'd add legitimacy in the eyes of the Brevic nobility.
Counciler Svetlana would most want to be in this position.
Diplomat Magister Jhod might be a good choice, since Wis is an option. Erastil is big on teaching, so he might enjoy it.
Assassin Taisper?
Treasurer Oleg would be a good choice.
Warden Zander?
Akiros could be useful in a number of positions, if you want him.
STR 18 DEX 12 CON 15 INT 10 WIS 12 CHA 12
Alexius might sign up for Assassin or Spymaster, if anything.
STR 16 DEX 12 CON 14 INT 17 WIS 10 CHA 10
Oleg, now with only one arm...
STR 11 DEX 9 CON 10 INT 12 WIS 15 CHA 8
Svetlana
STR 8 DEX 9 CON 10 INT 11 WIS 12 CHA 15
Kesten
STR 17 DEX 8 CON 13 INT 10 WIS 12 CHA 14
Jhod
STR 10 DEX 8 CON 13 INT 12 WIS 18 CHA 14
If none of these work, I can make some suitable NPCs and introduce them into the council. We'd just have to figure out where they came from.
Hehe when I read this I kept thinking about Mark Addy's role as Robert Baratheon in Game of Thrones. "Boy go fetch me a breastplate stretcher and be quick about it!"
Right on the money ;)
For the kingdom roles I strongly suggest we go the ones with the highest available stat bonus, I really don't want to face it if we screw up the kingdom because we needed another +1 on the roll...
That said I think Kesten is our best bet for king, I'm sure he'll step down when Jemini gets back and as Barcas pointed out; he'll grant us legitimacy with the brevic nobility.
Berrin can play at being king, sure, but he'll be more usefull filling other roles. He won't turn it down flat, but he won't be happy about it either.
So, my recomendations-
Ruler: Cha -Kesten (Jemini)
Councillor: Wis/Cha -Verik/Jhod/Taisper all make better choices than Svetlana.
General: str/cha -Berrin
Grand Diplomat: Int/Cha -Svetlana
High Priest: wis/cha -Verik/Jhod/Taisper
Magister: int/cha -Tandlara
Marshall: str/con -Corwin
Royal Assassin: str/dex none
Spymaster: dex/int Alexius
Treasurer: int/wis -Oleg, though Taisper beats him stat wise.
Warden: dex/wis -Zander
Or we could have a Crown built for us, (a.k.a. headband of alluring charisma) and pass it on to whomever sits on the throne, if we pitch in I'm sure we could get at least a +4 one.. That way it won't hurt so much whoever sits on the throne and when Jemini gets back we'd be talking some serious bonuses...
On that train of thought we could actually make a badge of office for all the appropriate roles...
I will probably need the weekend to get fully read up, and soak up Zander's personality.
I have Zander's sheet at 2nd level. Do I bring that up to 3rd? And he has a trait I can't find - Exile. Sounds perfect for Zander, but not sure what it does.
Warden would be perfect for Zander. Out, away from the Court, on solo patrols.
Well other than speaking for Verik as High Priest (and Oleg being Treasurer just seems like a good fit that Verik would abide by), I would just say that Kesten Garess makes sense long-term as a Diplomat, as the CHA is good and his Garess background would help the realm understand the Brevoy politics a bit better. I can see why Tandlara would want Spymaster and not Magister in terms of her in-game personality - perhaps Magister is throwing me off as we're not going arcane magic-heavy in this campaign or in the Kingmaker rules anyway, so if it's more about education then Jhod would be a good community fit. Do we need an Assassin in terms of vacancy penalties, and if so then perhaps Executioner is a better title...
In the short-term, I really like Berrin as Steward over Kesten, because the "Council" would rule collectively anyway for a lot of things, but mainly because the RP opportunities for a reluctant Berrin at the +1 year ceremonies are just too good to pass up ;)
Heh, I think 'The Sullen Steward' would be a fitting title for the history books if Berrin needs to don the crown ;P
Welcome Meowzebub, I'd actually prefer it if we could hold off launching into part two until late sunday or monday, I have a work weekend ahead and my hrs will be around 12-16 per day friday till sunday, I might get off early sunday so holding off till then would be best for me.
Maybe we could place Akiros as the Executioner/Royal Assassin/Kings Justice? Have him do penance in that gruesome service?
EDIT;
btw. Where do we want to place our capital? Oleg's or the SL's keep? And would it be possible to get a map for the keep? I have an itch to fiddle with a castle..
I'd vote for the SL's keep as it will place the city by water and waterfronts will be a huge option for BP's.
Barcas, I'm going to replace Taisper's Law Domain with an Inquisition when I level him up this weekend, is that okay? I'm still deciding but will let you know as soon as I decide. I have it narrowed down to a couple likely candidates but wanna sleep on it.
As for the government, I don't see Taisper occupying any role, honestly, nor do I think he'd want to; he's got different marching orders. If he has to take one or it'll screw up the game then I'll have him occupy a position, but I honestly did not have that sort of thing in mind when I made the character and would rather not.
@Downrightamazed; are you still planning on having Taisper run off? I remember you talked about him flipping over to either good or evil depending on how things played out but, either that or striking out alone.
How would it work if we renamed the royal assassin High Inquisitor? It would give Taisper a position in which he could focus on going after bad guys by his own judgement...
I'm seeing some errors in the kingdom sheet, not sure how to fix it...
In the Overall sheet the Economy total in in error because of a connection of the Resource section to the Kingdom sheet where the Economy section seems to contain a smiley face... ;0) to be exact...

OK then my attempt based on all the above posts and letting everyone take their own called roles.
Requested (as above)
General Berrin (+4 Str)
High Priest Verik (+4 Wis)
Marshal Corwin (+4 Str)
Spymaster Tandlara (+4 Int)
Unfilled
Ruler Kesten (+2) / Jemini (+4)
Counciler Svetlana (+2) (others better but we don't have enough and cha is her best stat): maybe a good vacancy for an NPC
Diplomat Vacant initially, eventually Kesten
Magister Jhod (+4)
Assassin Can do without for now, poss Alexius as above (+4)
Treasurer Oleg (+2)
Warden Zander (+4)
Unoficial badass Taisper
This maximises all bonuses (without using Akiros) and leaves only diplomat empty at the start but we are short int/cha characters until Jemini comes back. Kesten fits smoothly into that role as per Verik's post above.
Main Variation (bringing in Akiros)
- Berrin as steward. Akiros general. Kesten diplomat.
If the DM is agreeable I also really like Berrin's idea that Taisper basically acts as assassin without the formal title. Lets face it he's going to be roaming around dispensing justice as he sees fit. Sounds perfect to me.
@Downrightamazed; are you still planning on having Taisper run off? I remember you talked about him flipping over to either good or evil depending on how things played out but, either that or striking out alone.
Yeah, pretty much; he'll stay LN for now but I see LE in his future, though Jemini's sacrifice is a mitigating factor. He'll still work with the group, it's just he's built to be going around capturing/killing people he sees as judged, and would not have the patience for government work of any sort.
So, as Corwin says, regardless of any title or job he's given, Taisper's going to be going around elminating "problems", so we may as well give him some ancillary position or a position that allows for this.
If we pitch in for a ruler's crown this might work, though I'm loath to proclame Akiros as the local hero... Someone please sell me the idea.
I'm ok with Berrin being steward, sounds like fun >;P
Seems like a fair lot of gold for a relatively minor benefit that is intended to be temporary. Unless of course its the sort of thing Jemini would want to buy anyway? She could effectively buy it and Berrin hands it over when she comes back maybe?
I'm seeing some errors in the kingdom sheet, not sure how to fix it...
In the Overall sheet the Economy total in in error because of a connection of the Resource section to the Kingdom sheet where the Economy section seems to contain a smiley face... ;0) to be exact...
Oh yeah Berrin I got that too, but I think I fixed it. There's that #REF error on the Kingdom worksheet, but for the Economy Cell D4 I think I fixed it by putting in F14:F38 in place of the REF error.
LoL, I almost feel bad for wanting Jemini to come back with all that post-death love.
Just wanted to let you know that I've had troubles with my PC's power supply, then a call-in to the office, then internet trouble. I'll be posting Jemini's next step on her spiritual journey this evening. Hopefully :)
Hey gang! I graduated from college this week, and it got hectic and frankly quite drunken there.
Tandlara is definately gung-ho for spymaster.
Also heya Meowzebub, glad to have Zander back in action. What way do you want to play Tandlara/Zanders relationship? Where would you like it to go?
So Interim Government: Ruler Berrin (+1)
Councillor Svetlana (+2)
General Alexius (+3) (If he's interested, I love Akiros as a character, but I can't just trust him yet. We may find somewhere for him after the year.)
Grand Diplomat Kesten (+2)
High Priest Verik (+4)
Magister Jhod (+2)
Marshall Corwin (+4)
Royal Assassin/High Inquisitor Taisper (+1)
Spymaster Tandlara (+4)
Treasurer Oleg (+2)
Warden Zander (+4)
AND Newhaven Government: Ruler Jemini (+5)
Councillor Svetlana (+2)*
General Berrin (+4)
Grand Diplomat Kesten (+2)*
High Priest Verik (+4)
Magister Jhod (+2)*
Marshall Corwin (+4)
Royal Assassin/High Inquisitor Taisper (+1)
Spymaster Tandlara (+4)
Treasurer Oleg (+2)*
Warden Zander (+4)
Can be replaced in the long-term if other new figures appear. Though especially int he case of Oleg and Svetlana, I'm all for buying them headbands and hoping the level up a bit over time.
For the country math, Zander will be a +5 once I post up his +5 stats.
As for his relationship, I am still catching up on the posts, and in regards to that, I will need to be clear before responding. Hope to be up to speed tomorrow.
Pardon my interruption but since theres no PM system here this is my only way to get a message to Vagrant-Poet to see if he's still interested in the Tempest Coven game. And now back to your regularly scheduled program...
Gah. What do we lose if we have no General? Stability.
Maybe Taispar will manage that for just a year, and then we can move on to roster #2, also presumably by then we will have befreinded more folken. If Taispar doesn't want to be involved, Akiros would make a great Queen's Champion (Royal Assassin).
OK. Finally caught up. You lot are a prolific bunch. :-)
Will post up Zander's profile and response to the situation later tonight.
I really had to catch up on Taisper. As I remember him as happy go lucky in the beginning and now is so stern. I didn't follow the In-game thread too closely because I wanted to avoid spoilers, so I never knew how 'disturbed' Taisper was. I hope Tanner is a different enough spin. He hears voices too, but they are his own and he wrestles with his conscious. I guess the Inquisitor has some mental instability built in by becoming such an avatar for their god or purpose.
I really enjoyed the interactions and knew way more about Taxfest then I ever thought I should. I enjoyed that bit. Actually I enjoyed all the characters and NPCs. Hope to hold up the standards.
