Male Half-orc Rogue 1

Razvan examines the book closely running his fingers lightly around the lock. Satisfied that the lock is not trapped, he removes a tension wrench from his belt pouch and inserts it in the the lower portion of the keyhole. Razvan lightly applies torque to the tension wrench clockwise and inserts a a thin pick into the upper part of the keyhole feeling for the pins. Before he can make significant progress there is a panicked knock at the front door. Razvan quickly removes the tension wrench and pick from the keyhole and returns them to his pouch. He then quickly hands the book back to Iagon as the village messenger relays his urgent summons. Razvan looks to each of his companions and then finally to Kendra.

This sounds urgent...

Kara jumps up when the messenger yells out his message. "We should probably go right away. Something is obviously the matter." Without looking toward Kendra for confirmation, Kara heads toward the front door, hoping the others will follow.

Iagon starts at the messenger, then takes the offered book from Razvan and follows the others. At the last moment, he realizes that he's holding the book, out and in plain view. Muttering to himself about focus and concentration, he slides it into his pack and sets the pack aside, then follows the out.

Male Human Wizard - 1

As you approach the memorial, a large crowd is gathered around, they regard you indifferently. A short time investigating the scene will reveal that a "V" has been written in blood on the base of the monument.

Anselm tries not to gape at the debasement of the monument. Nonetheless, an exclamation of What the... escapes his lips. Then, addressing the crowd as a whole, How long has this been here? And I don't suppose anyone knows who did it?

Silly question, but you never know...

Screwing up his face into a squint with a knitted brow, Anselm studies the 'V' and tries to determine how long it's been there.

Sounds like a Heal check. Or Survival. I'd be defaulting on WIS for either one, so it doesn't matter much. 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14

Regardless of his findings, Anselm turns and addresses his companions. Are any of you skilled in detecting the presence and nature of magic? I have no reason to suspect one way or another, but it's best to be sure.

You deduce it is fresh

Someone in the crowd tells you it was there just this morning. It must have happened overnight.

He holds tightly to the key about his neck as he calls upon his faith to illuminate anything with a magical aura on the monument. As he does so, he tries to remember any pertinent names or places starting with the letter V in his studies of Harrowstone.

Razvan is able to follow the trail to the West, but as it nears the river, it gets lost.

Sczarni

Male Half-orc Rogue 1

Razvan watches the currents of the river in silence and thinks. He turns his attention back to the end of the blood trail. The half-orc kneels and lowers his face to the ground sniffing like some hound on a hunt. His hands gently probing the ground around the blood trail moving aside foliage searching for any subtle clues his eyes may have missed.

The trail of blood ends here or should I say starts here. I imagine the animal was killed here then taken to the monument since we found the source of the bloody trail, the dead animal, still at the monument. If the animal was killed at the monument and left there then there would be no blood trail. If they took to the river then the trail is going to be cold. All I can do now is look for tracks to the North and South but there is no guarantee that any tracks I find are from whoever defaced the monument. It seems that the river leads out of town to the South so I will start in that direction.

Razvan will look for tracks to the South and if he does not find anything he will search to the North.

Iagon glances about in frustration, his mood only darkened as he sees Anselm doing much of the same. Seems that the trail's gone cold on this one. He looks at Kendra and gently touches her arm, hoping that the familiar manner of the touch isn't overstepping the boundaries of the the young woman's relationship with him.

Kendra, we should go back to your home and talk. Perhaps we can fix breakfast, and you can fill us in on some details of the town.

When back at the house...

Kendra, we'd like to find more tomes and articles in which to seek out the answers to some of our questions, particularly about the Harrowstone prison. Do you know of any other places in town where we can seek out details of this? Also...we'd like to fix breakfast if we could...it's the least we can do.

He looks about at his new companions. The professor mentioned some items that could be used against spirits, I think. They were in the Restlands...perhaps someone should go and see if he sought out these items; in searching for them, he may have found some detail that we are missing.

Silver Crusade

Male Human Paladin of Iomedae (Undead Scourge)/1 / HP 15 of 15 / F+3 R+0 W+4 / AC 19.10.19 / Init. +2 / Perc +2

Stranger and stranger things become. Something's moving in this town. And it's entirely too coincidental that it starts now of all times.

Looking to the Restlands with a sigh, Anselm's glance falls to his stomach and he gives a nod. I'd love to retire to the library, but this is definitely a time to act. Ere what is undoubtedly a long day, though, I must break my fast. After that, I would greatly appreciate going and looking for the items Iagon mentioned.

But who to take with me? It seems rather unwise to go alone. Iagon will make good headway in the library. Razvan seems to have some initiative behind him. And he's explored a bit more of the town than I have.

Shall anyone accompany me? After he asks the question, Anselm turns to each of his companions, his gaze lingering on Razvan for a moment.

Sczarni

Male Half-orc Rogue 1

There should be tracks....if this was done by a mortal creature. Is this the work of some spirit? I should let the priests and wizards deal with this...why am I still here?

Razvan looks at Kendra and knows the answer to his unspoken question. He listens to the Paladin with respectful attention. When the Paladin's gaze lingers on him, Razvan holds his gaze and nods his consent to accompany the Paladin.

Male Human Wizard - 1

After things calm down and you are all back at the residence, Kendra helps you with the following information:

There are plenty of places to research in town I suppose, as you have found out, my father's library here has a lot of information on the whispering way. The town hall likely has a lot of information on the prison and it's prisoners, but they are unlikely to let just anyone walk in and go through town documents. The same could also be said for the town's temple of Pharasma. The Unfurling Scroll, is the town's magic shop and school house, it could probably be used as well, though I am sure it's owner, Alendru will ask for payment to use his facilities.

As far as the Restlands is concerned, I would advise either getting the church's permission, or conducting a more clandestine operation, folks around here are likely to get nervous of strangers snooping around the graveyard. And with all the trouble around town lately, you might want to stick together.

Is there anything else i can help you with?

Silver Crusade

Male Human Paladin of Iomedae (Undead Scourge)/1 / HP 15 of 15 / F+3 R+0 W+4 / AC 19.10.19 / Init. +2 / Perc +2

Ah, the Church of Pharasma. I had a feeling they'd get involved one way or the other before this was done.

Rising and nodding to Kendra, Anselm speaks with the resolution of someone set to his task.

I'll be able to liaise with the Pharasmins. While I don't follow their path, he says, raising his holy symbol, I am sure we can come to some sort of mutual understanding. All churches seek to aid their flocks through tough times, and it seems that we have fallen on tough times. And if I tell them even a little bit of what I found in the Professor's library about the Way, I'm sure they'll be all too glad to help me... Will anyone accompany me? We will need to convince the Pharasmins of the urgency of our task. I don't think this will be difficult, but we shall see. After that, the plan is to set off into the Restlands to find the aforementioned items. And call it a hunch, but I just want to make sure everything is sound there. The Way's and the Tyrant's focus on ... darker things... has me concerned. His voice wavers almost imperceptibly. I hope I'm wrong about this. I really, really do. I hope I'm wrong about all of it. Most especially...

Before setting off, Anselm dons all his gear. I'm not expecting a fight, but hopefully a follower of Iomedae in full regalia will present a more convincing argument than a man in robes with a holy symbol.

Anselm looks like a hero. Certainly that is what Kendra wants...what every woman wants. I am no hero. It is past time for me to go but who will keep an eye on Kara.

Razvan listens to Anselm's speech with a growing respect for the paladin. The growing respect battles an angry jealous feeling as he imagines that Kendra must be enchanted by the charismatic paladin. The half-orc attempts to deal with the guilt of his internal conflict by convincing himself that he doesn't about Kendra's or any other woman's romantic feelings.

"I will go with you,"Razvan replies before cursing his situation in orcish.

Razvan is both relieved and disappointed that Kendra is remaining behind. He finds the mixture of feelings to be confusing. The confusion gives way to frustrated angst focused on the groups delayed departure.

Why haven't we left? Why am I so agitated? I need to calm down and focus. How can Anselm be so calm and focused....so heroic...?Is it his faith?

"I will wait for you all outside,"Razvan whispers not really wanting to draw attention to himself before he gathers his pack and leaves. A gleam catches his eye as he walks past Anselm, it is the symbol of the paladin's patron. Razvan hesitates for a moment and appears on the verge of asking Anselm a question before he loses his nerve and continues outside.

Anselm starts to ask Razvan if something is concerning him, but holds the question as the halforc exits. Wonder what's on his mind... Shall have to find a moment to ask in private. He seems to be a little unsure of himself.

Anselm then follows. We must be off now if we're to make good progress today. Be sure you have everything with you that you'll need. I'm hoping that we won't meet any resistance, but somehow I do not expect that will be the case. As he leaves, he takes his holy symbol in his hand and offers a whispered prayer, then falls silent.

Yeah. Something tells me Gibbs and friends will show up again. Or maybe... no. Best not to entertain such thoughts.

Once outside, Anselm calls to Razvan. Ahoy, friend! We're setting off now. Perhaps you and I could talk on the way?

HP 8/8 Human (Varisian) Sorcerer (Destined) 1

Kara nods at Anselm's words about possibly meeting some resistance. She returns to her room to don her pocketed scarf, stashing too objects in it for the time being. The first is her Harrow deck, as always. And the second is something that Kara has never used and hopes to never have to use. Kara looks at her knife for a moment before hiding it in the scarf. She bought the knife in order to protect herself, but she has never used it, and she's not sure she could stab someone, even if it was to save herself.

Kara also checks her scroll case, making sure her backup spells are there. She has never used these spells before either, with the exception of sleep once upon a time, and that was only to help a friend of hers sleep through nightmares she was having. expeditious retreat and grease were her first line of defense against unwanted advances and thieves she thought she may encounter while working. Luckily, she's never had to use them.

Returning to the group, Kara let's them know she is ready, patting her scroll case.

The church is E on the original map.

Once you have left the Lorrimor residence and make way to the church, you pass by a of five Varisian girls dressed in shawls and dresses playing jump rope. Each of the girls takes turns jumping in the rope while singing two lines of a rather disturbing song, then skips out of the rope to let the next girl take up the next two lines. The way in which the girls switch from skipping to passing the ends of the rope to each other to keep the whole thing going is strikingly well timed and well choreographed. While they skip, these are the five repeating lines of a song:

Put her body on the bed.
Take a knife and lop her head.
Watch the blood come out the pipe.
Feeds the stirge, so nice and ripe.
Drops of red so sparkly bright.
Splatters spell her name just right.
With a hammer killed his wife.
Now he wants to claim your life.
Tricksy father tells a lie.
Listen close or you will die.

Razvan nods as Anselm approaches him. He hesitates as if he is unsure of how to phrase his response. It is clear that whatever the subject it is one that the half-orc is not entirely comfortable with. He looks again at the symbol of Anselm's patron.

"I have faced danger my whole life. In the city of Urgir every day was a struggle to survive. When I left the city and eventually the Hold of Belkzen behind life did not become much easier. At least not until I met the professor. I have been hunted before but I have never felt such evil as I feel here. It scares me. You seem so confident and I wonder if your patron gives you comfort.", Razvan stops for a moment and looks Anselm in the eye,"Perhaps you could tell me about your patron? Perhaps teach me a prayer?"

I sound like a scared child. This is pure foolishness. As if some knightly patron would care about a half breed thief. I am sure she favors heroes and I am no hero....

Before Anselm has a chance to respond, they are interrupted by the song of the five Varisian girls playing jump rope. The words of their song send a shiver down Razvan's spine. Time seems to slow and the air becomes heavy as if some wave of evil has washed over Razvan. Iagon's voice snaps the half-orc back to his senses. He watches the girls intently hoping to make some sense of the hauntingly strange situation and waits for a response to Iagon's question.

It's not his fault. He wasn't there. No one alive now, except maybe some Elves and the gods, has anything to do with him. Or maybe... no.

The corner of his mouth twitches ever so slightly. Yes, I'll tell him about Iomedae. That'll do.

Anselm takes a breath to formulate an in-depth reply (what priest wouldn't seize the opportunity to tell others about their faith—especially when asked?) but is interrupted by the horrid song the girls are singing.

He visibly deflates, and frowns. I'm sorry, Razvan, but it seems we'll have to discuss Iomedae at another time. And turning to the rope jumping girls, What is that you're singing? Where did you learn it? And do your parents know you're singing it? He tries not to sound too reprimanding, but probably fails.
