Female Changling(Hulking) Sorcerer - Orc Bloodline/5 - HP: 12/28; AC16,T14,FF13

Carina continues to shiver in Bron's arms. When the spell hits her, you feel her recover some and take a deep breath and wipes away some of the tears away.

Thank you m'love. I was sitting next to this pool, but it was no the despoiled morass we see now, instead it was a beautiful monument to the fey and in the middle was a pure white statue of the unicorn. It was beautiful. Carina pauses and you can feel her begin to shiver again as she takes another deep breath. [b[ Then dark clouds blotted out the sun and . . . it was terrible. I heard this crackling evil female voice behind me. It was saying I was her daughter. . . and, and I was to be part of a . . . a copen, or crovan or something. Then the witchdoctor was there, and the voice said I was hers, not his. Then I turned and . . . and it was hideous, and tall, and black . . . so hideous that it would make those fawns you fought pretty.[/b]

Carina begins to cry again: Weeping: Why is this happening to me? Why me?

Male Human Bard 4

I do not know, love, I do not. All I know is that if they want a piece of you they'll have to go through me first.

The knight smiles, wearily.

And you know I'm not one to go down easily. Many have tried eating me before, and none have suceeded.

Carina grins momentarily at Bron's jest. And then holds him tight, still shivering.

Male Human Wizard 4 (hp: 33/33 AC: 13, FF: 12, T:12)

When Zorestar has the opportunity, he approaches Bron discretely and speaks a few quiet words with him.

"For Carina's sake, you must keep a careful eye on her. She is a changeling, and as such, she has the blood of a hag within her. She may be feeling the call of her mother. You must help her to resist such a calling otherwise we may lose her forever. As I mentioned to you earlier, you must help her to feel safe here among us! Let her know that we are her people and especially that you are here to protect her! Those visions do not bode well for us, but we will do everything we can to help her. Let me know immediately if she has any more occurrences, my friend."

Male Human Bard 4

Bron appears a little tired as he spent most of the night craddling Carina and soothing her.

I always keep an eye on her, Zores. The problem is she feels weak to face those creatures, when she is obviously not. She has resisted that until now. I just hope someday we have enough reasons for her to truly stand up for herself in front of those a*!%###s and exert her own will over them. But it should be a long road to travel.

Male Human Wizard 4 (hp: 33/33 AC: 13, FF: 12, T:12)

"Well, the one hope that we will cling to is that changelings who ignore the call will eventually cease to hear it. However, this will bring us a different set of problems. It is at that time that a hag mother will sometimes disguise herself and venture out to find her daughter personally. If she finds her, she will try to lure Carina back to the coven, where she will attempt to perform the ritual of transformation. However, keep in mind that the process of performing the call or physically retrieving the changeling is taxing, and if we can get Carina to resist long enough, the hag may find it easier to simply lure in another mate and birth another changeling in hopes that the next one will heed the evertantalizing call."

Male Human Bard 4

Bronwyn looks a little puzzled at the wizard's profound knowledge over such obscure topics.

Well, if she comes we'll smite her down and be done with it. Maybe it would be for the best.

Throwing his hands up in exasperation the hermit stalks off into the woods leaving them to their fate.

Zorestar had a discrete conversation with Bron. This means out of Carina's earshot. Telias, however, may not be quite as discrete with his words. If Carina approached Bron, Zorestar would stop talking immediately. He may even change conversation topics abruptly.

Bron wrote:

"If we could, that would be fine, but a hag is a very powerful creature. Furthermore, we need to remain vigilant for remember, she would likely approach in disguise. Although, I am not sure how adept the hag would be at such a transformation, we must certainly make sure that Carina does not go off with any strangers. At least we don't have to worry about her being drawn away with candy like a child. Does Carina have a sweet tooth, by any chance?"

The Orc kept to himself mostly, Ganit appreciated that. Traveling along the riverside brought with it the benefit of steady food and water. While breaking to relieve their horses, Ganit fished up a few silversides and a small mouthed bass for them to supp on when they reached Jhod's temple. After a bit of deft knife work gutting and filleting, he rolled his catch with salt and wrapped them with moss in a damp cloth. By the time he had finished they were ready to continue on a short ways to their destination.

Ganit suffered no formalities when they came across Jhod and his refurbished temple. "Bird found you alright, eh? Good. Too dark to travel now, we'll leave at sun-up."

He unwraps and washes the fillets with a waterskin before laying them on a pan over Jhod's open fire. Like all of his cooking, the fillets were without the glamour of fine spices and techniques with wine and oil. They were basic and relied solely on the quality of the catch. Ganit's well trained nose told him that another hour on the road would have caused spoilage so the faster this meal was cooked, the less awful it would taste. He didn't mind his dinner nor did he care if the others found it below their standards. Fish keeps him healthy and more times than not a 'fresh' hot meal beats picking away at stale trail rations.

Jameson rode quietly with Ganit, glad for the company and the silence.

Forgot what it's like to get a quiet night of sleep.

Occasionally riding Donal ahead and behind Jameson gave Donal his head on the pretense of scouting their surroundings. Riding the horse to the limit of safety before gently pulling back on the reins and nodding at his friend's quick compliance to the slightest command, Jameson smiled at the opportunity to run without worry for a short time.

"How is the day finding you Jhod? Anything we can help with?"

Shucking armor and gear from both himself and Donal Jameson put himself to work clearing undergrowth and chopping wood for Jhod.

Meanwhile, at the temple.

Jhod appears, enjoying how this place has kept him safe. The pool he continues to clean, but it no longer is immaculate or producing the ability to heal wounds as it did when the group killed the bear.

Jhod moves over to the bird cautiously before taking the note and giving it a read. He nods and gives a smile to the bird.
"Drink as much as you like and rest. Don't want you to get too tired." he then scribbles something on the note and hands it back to the crow, tying it to it's foot.

Note:

[i]Bring the unicorn to me. I have a scroll that might help give us answers, but I cannot guarantee anything.

when Ganit and Jameson arrives he smiles to the pair.
"I had just attached a reply. I can indeed help. I have a scroll to help with this matter, but I can't promise it'll give you any answers as some creatures can alter the mines of those they kill to stop themselves being caught, especially if it's such a horrible, disgusting creature as to kill a unicorn." he states and goes back into his temple to grab a scroll case, showing it to the two. "If you can get any information, this will be invaluable. If not, the only way would be to raise it from the dead if I or any of you get strong enough to cast such powerful spells."

At the offer of help he smiles towards Jameson
"No help needed really, it's been some time and I've cleaned and salvaged everything in the temple. Many of the holy texts were ruined, but they were only duplicates so it isn't such a big loss." he takes a look towards the forest "Listen, old dead eye keeps the dangerous creatures at bay. I havn't see a single bear of wolf out here, but dear and stags have come to drink from the water. The animals don't stay though, returning to the wild as is their nature. Besides getting building materials to turn this into a fully functioning temple, there is nothing else I can think of for you to help with. Give me a moment to gather my things and I'll travel with you."

Not to meta game too much but if Jhod just sent a note to have the others bring the unicorn to his temple, shouldn't we just wait for them to arrive?

None of us have even gone out onto the spoiled area yet. We have no clue what is causing everything to be essentially in a stasis. I certainly do not plan on picking up a several week old dead unicorn and risk the wrath of the fey for doing something wrong.

I origonally wrote that before seeing Ganit's of Jameson's posts about arriving at Jhod's, so disreguard that.

After a little while Jhod arrives with some stuff packed up and smiles to the two

Carina is rather taken aback by Ganit's curt and dismissive response. She jumps up and glares into his eyes, one eye cold as ice, the other burning like fire:

You think this experience is a nightmare? You have no idea what a nightmare is! When you go to bed at night, do you fear for your sanity every time? Do orc witchdoctors invade your dreams and tell you to do horrible things!! Do giant black monstrous women tell you that you are their daughter? Your experience has been a vacation my friend. You may dwell on some dark secret from your past, but it is YOUR PAST. THIS IS MY NOW!!!

With that Carina stalks off and begins yelling in some guttural language and tossing globs of acid at defenseless rocks and trees.

"Sounds like you're being haunted by your past too. Only by something you had no control over. After you burn everything you care for to a point where even the things you've replaced it with taste like ashes maybe then you can feel the pain of my dreams," he rebukes spitefully, his cheeks flushing red beneath his beard. He tries moving away but stops short and turns back to Carina who has since begun to storm off.

"Listen Princess, I'm sure it's frightening when your dreams of rainbows and butterflies and handsome knights with their glowing destriers are uninterrupted with orcs and witches but watching yourself murder and rape and otherwise raise hell is a whole lot different than watching someone or something else do it." he spits.

"Word of advice: If you ever wake up from one of those dreams feeling like you need to take it out on the rest of us you better kill me first." The words held the coldness of unsweetened truth. It would have been no surprise if the others could see Ganit's breath as he continued speaking. "Unlike the rest of 'em, I'll not hesitate to kill you if I must. Just 'cause your a woman don't mean you won't die as easy or as messy as a man or child does. Believe me. I know."

"You don't glow do you Donal? No, I thought not."

Jameson watches as the Hermit and Princess begin to compare the relative horribleness of their pasts and presents.

At some point she will need to accept who and what she is.

Riding over to the others he casually leans down.

"I've five gold on Ganit."

Female Changling(Hulking) Sorcerer - Orc Bloodline/5 - HP: 12/28; AC16,T14,FF13

Carina turns back to Ganit: Perhaps it you told someone what haunts you it might help. Spending your days hating yourself and hiding in the woods certainly isn't. At least you know what haunts you. I tell you all my nightmares, and either nobody knows what they are or nobody wants to tell me. James has told me that the strange tongue I have learned is orcish. Other than James I have never seen anyone with orc blood. Orcs are few and far between in Brevoy. So, why am I haunted by this orc witch doctor. And now, while you and James were off, this black monster entered my dreams and is saying am its daughter. What the hell is that supposed to mean? My father was a hunter, my mother a housewife. I know my parents and they certainly were not orcs or black monsters.

Carina is still steaming at this point.

And, I am fighting my nightmares with all I can. If I do wake up a monster, I only hope you are able to stop me for the monsters in my dreams seem to wield far greater powers that I can imagine.

Carina then turns away again grumbling to herself in that strange tongue she seems to have picked up somewhere. As she is walking away, she suddenly sees a rabbit leap out of a hole ahead of her, at this she calls out: Llosgwch cwningen diafol i chi.

Orcish:

Burn you devil rabbit.

As you watch, the rabbit suddenly bursts into flame with a sudden squeal.

Male Human Bard 4

Bronwyn sits calmly while Carina talks, knowing full well the seasoned ranger won't fall for the provocation and will keep his cool head.

I must not undermine Carina and try to restrain her in every situation. She'll have to learn to do that herself by trial and error, or we are all doomed.

When the ranger falls through, though, the bard is genuinely surprised and quickly gets up, interposing himself between the two and almost shouting:

Calm down both of ya! Let's not begin comparing nightmares of all things. We all carry our own demons around, there's no doubt. But the moment we let them take over us and fight among ourselves is the moment we fail. And right now failure has a steep price, right now if we fail we not only fail ourselves, but all those people out there, that insane bunch of refugees that for some reason takes us as leaders and inspiration. The stakes are higher, friends, and we can't gamble with the lives of those folk.

He turns to his bride, in a softer voice:

Carina dear, you know I love you and will be by your side, but you need to stop interpreting random expressions as personal attacks on you. As I've said, we all have our problems and carry our own demons on our shoulders. I can help you carry yours, and I know the others are eager to help as well.

But as he turns to the ranger, the bard is apparently still trying to gather his thoughts in a coherent sentence.

And you... No more talk about murdering group members, alright?

"Let me see if I can clear this up! Carina, I am afraid this is all my doing. Not what I am about to tell you, but the fact that you are in the dark about this. You see, I believe you to be a changeling. The fact that you have different colored eyes is only one of many signs that point to the fact that you are most likely the offspring of an evil hag. Let me see if I can explain."

"When a hag of any sort conceives a child with a man, the result is a changeling. The male parent is usually eaten or killed by his partner before he can see the offspring, or else flees the area in shame upon discovering the true nature of his lover, and the hag herself interacts with the child just long enough to set it on the stoop of some unsuspecting family or temple. Depending on the race of her father, a changeling can resemble any type of humanoid, including dwarves, gnomes, and especially orcs."

"A changeling and her new family are never aware of the strange child’s true parents, but in most cases everyone involved is keenly aware that there is something odd about the frail child with the ghostly pallor. I am sure that even you, Carina, notice that you possess abilities that others do not. From what I understand, it is around puberty that the changeling begins to hear what hags refer to as “the call,” a hypnotic, spiritual voice that only she can hear and that beckons her to travel. To where, the changeling does not know, but the underlying prospect of finding out her true origins is often enough to drive the girl to seek out the source of this mystical voice. Does this sound like something you are experiencing?"

"Well, the voice is in fact that of the changeling’s birth mother, who forms a coven with two others hags in order to summon her child back to her, now that she is old enough to fully transform into a hag. This transformative ritual is a barbaric one that only the most determined changelings willingly go through; upon arriving at the coven, it is usually too late to turn back for changelings who were merely drawn to the voice by curiosity."

"The good news is that changelings who ignore the call eventually cease to hear it. However, the concern we have is that a hag mother sometimes disguises herself and ventures into the world, seeking out her daughter. If she finds you, she wil lure you back to the coven, where she can perform the ritual of transformation."

"I would rather not go into detail about this actual transformation, but considering that the process of performing the call or physically retrieving the changeling is taxing, I believe that if you can resist long enough, then the hags may find it easier to simply lure in another mate and birth another changeling in hopes that this new one will heed their luring call."

I am a monster and you all are not safe. She pauses for a second. No, I know my parents. They loved me dearly. I am not a, what did you call it, hag or changeling. I am a human just like all of you except James. I am not a monster. These dreams are nightmares, not some copen calling me. You are wrong.

"Ask it a question." he simply says, before looking back to the dead unicorn.

Orcus is a lord of the undead, in much the same way as Urgathoa is, however, she's a God and as such, she is above him. However, Orcus claimed lord of the undead in his own domain and in response, some intelligent undead do venerate him. In fact, I'm sure he is even able to grant spells to his servants. You see, both Orcus and Urgathoa see the path to unlife as eternal life, such as becoming a lich or vampire no matter who you have to kill or devour to get there, even your own family. However, what makes this unholy symbol very unique is that Orcus is such an obscure demigod. Verily I tell you that there are no known cults in Golarion who worship him."

"The other item that you left me is this dagger. After studying it, I discovered that like the unholy symbol, it does not give off a magical aura, but you can tell that the blade is certainly used for blood sacrifices. I suppose it could be used for anything as small as a goat to something much larger. Certainly with the death of this unicorn, it does make me wonder. You mentioned that you found these items in the city. Do you think that it has some connection to the events surrounding the death of this unicorn? Can you give me more information as to where these items came from?"

For a moment nothing seems to happen, but then a strange sound of the creature, giving harsh breaths as it then opens it's pale dead eyes and looks directly at Zorestar, considering the question.
"Purest, corrupted beauty." it remains stareing and looking up at you.

Zorestar looks into the creature's eyes and says, "O great and noble unicorn, how did this creature slay you?"

It seems to stammer a bit, struggling at a answer.

"She...pointed her finger. A line of dark energy came at me and all went black." as he says this it makes apparent to match the spell you figured it was.

Carina:

As you are alone, complaining out loud to yourself you don't notice movement nearby where you see a curious sight. You see what at first appears to be a woman, with glowing yellow eyes and horns on her head. She has no hair on her head and the upper body of a woman, but the lower body of a shaved goat.

Her hands end in claws, sharper and fiercer. Being a fey she is wearing little to no clothing and as you get ready for her to attack, you notice she has a sympathetic look on her face as she sits down on a log near you.
"I learnt orcish from my mother. I've had the same experiences as you." she says, simply pointing to her body as to point to highlight that she is some kind of amalgamation between something of the forest and something of the pits from her charcoal coloured skin, black horns and fierce yellow eyes. "Do not listen to them. Many fear me, because of my kin. If it were one of them, they would have already attacked." for a moment she then mutters something, then tells herself to shut up before then looking back to you and smiling.

The ranger winces a rueful smile at these words, "O Really? At least you're right about the knife, the revitalized corpse who wielded it meant to carve open a human sacrifice. Put an end to that." Ganit unconsciously scratches at the wicked scar that spanned the length of his face, putting some thought to the words he would use to continue.

He's smart. Smart enough to put the pieces together even if he wouldn't understand the big picture. Couldn't be that bad. His assistance might prove invaluable. It's not gonna stay a secret forever.

Ganit gives the highborn mage a sideways glance and moves in a step closer. "Orcus has a following in Brevoy and I've reason to believe those roots are here in your kingdom as well. I may have made a martyr a few days ago but I'll have no way of telling other than to let this grow on its own for a while. Those... things I gave you are my only lead until another follower is stupid enough to poke it's slimy head out from the grave. I may come back to you time and again with trinkets like that in need of your opinion, I'd appreciate it if you'd... *sigh* ... help... me."

DM Aron:

Carina looks up at the goat-fey-woman. What do you mean them? And what are you?

Knowledge(arcane, nature): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7 <-- as usual, Carina has no clue who or what this is.

Sense Motive: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (14) - 1 = 13

Hmm? This is a different welcome. Perhaps this will be my chance to make another friend out here in the Greenbelt.

"Naturally, I would be happy to offer what services I can. A cult of Orcus is a serious matter, and if this is true, we will need the help of the others as well. Have you told anybody else of these items or of this incident?

Zorestar strokes his beard as he listens to the spirit of the unicorn speak. He then thoughtfully asks another question.

"Was your horn taken by the person who killed you, Unicorn?"

Carina:

She gives a smile and points to her horns and over-all figure.
"Some call my kind the Forlarren. We're a breed of nymph and fiend. We all resent our looks and upbringing, however I'm one of the few who didn't kill my own mother. I manage to keep that side of me under control" she shivers and then speaks again to herself. "No she doesn't. Yes she does. Better control that you. But...human tastes good. Shut up!" she turns back to Carina again after that mini argument "Unfortunately, my emotions are unstable and so I have company where ever I go." she says that in a matter of fact kind of way as if this behaviour wasn't all that strange or even possibly dangerous.

"Take pride you do not act like what people percieve." she gives a soft smile at that and then looks over into the distance "The fey have been speaking about you and your group. Some would like to live with the people, others would like the people to eat but most don't feel one way nor the other and just want to protect their trees and groves as they have done for many years."
