DM Aron Marczylo's Curse of the Crimson Throne Part 3 (Inactive)

Game Master overfiend_87

Vencarlo is found and the party now know where the Senachal is, but something still lurks in the shadows of the labyrinth, hunting them down relentlessly.

If Aron doesn't have time, I could look at doing either tomorrow or Sunday by going through posts.

Krenn nods in agreement with Jerin, but raises a curious eyebrow when he mentions "agents" in the city.

Most of the treasure should have "Krenn sticks . . . in the sack of holding" right after it.

Master of Procrastination and Grognardia

I have all the treasure recorded as Alex asked me to up to the fungi creatures and their equipment. EVerything afterwards I've not recorded if anything. Will post it in discussion.

K, thanks. Will we be 10th after we finish with this chapter? Assumes you have no final surprises for us...just thinking ahead...

Yup, 10th level before the start of the next adventure

"If I remember, there is a boat in the entrance where all the fungi is." he states and you all remember a small vessal there, big enough for all of you to sit in and possibly follow the water out and from there, make a way to Harse. "Even if you all wish to stay here, Neolandus can't stay here since the Queen is after him"

He then pauses for a moment and looks at his equipment.
"By the way, how did you find my equipment? I assume Cressida sent you to look for me?" he asks, unaware that the Red Mantis Assassins were waiting for him nor that his student still lives near the ruins of the school.

Female Aasimar Cleric 9/Rogue 2) (HP: 93/93; AC: 25; FF: 21; Touch: 14

Your equipment came from your home. We were sent there to find you. Instead we found several Red Mantis assassins. As the assassins knew where you lived, we chose to remove any treasure that we found, so that it would not fall into the wrong hands.

Vencarlo curses under his breath.

"Sorry mi'lady for my language just then. I had assumed they were after a student, but clearly the contract is on my head too and anyone who helps Neolandus." as he says this he turns to his friend "We better get going, otherwise more assassins or Grey Maidens might find us." he states to the group and sheathing is blade for the moment. "I'm too old for all this adventuring. Once we're out of here, you can have my equipment. Who knows, there might be a new blackjack in Korvosa in the future."

Female Aasimar Cleric 9/Rogue 2) (HP: 93/93; AC: 25; FF: 21; Touch: 14

Thank you. But first, we must get out of the city. Since the queen has forsaken this part, we should at least be able to move. I can make you invisible for a couple of minutes if necessary.

Have we explored this whole area? Without having a physical map, it is hard to tell if we have searched the whole area. We definitely Take-10 on searching for trap doors or other hidden or concealed places where loot might be hidden.

Ready to move on unless there is anything else.

as he mentioned and I forgot to mention, there's aboat harbored to the west where you fought those fungi creatures. There are also two doors to the north. No windows, but the doors are unlocked.

Male Human Wizard (FC) 11 - Enchanter

We should stay long enough to sell and buy equipment before we leave the city.
As I mentioned before I can move around the city disguised and we can hide in the sewers for a few days until we have finished our business then we can leave by boat and go to Harse if that is what we think is the next best move.

Female Aasimar Cleric 9/Rogue 2) (HP: 93/93; AC: 25; FF: 21; Touch: 14

Unlike the rest of you heros of Korvosa, I am relatively unknown and can disguise myself fairly well if necessary.

I would prefer getting out of town sooner rather than later, but stocking up on equipment is important as the wealth of smaller towns is much less likely to be able to provide the items we may need in wherever our undermining of the mockery our government has become takes us. Revenge is always sweet, but killing oneself in the process is usually less than fulfilling. The Savored Sting will watch over us and grant us her blessing when we bring retribution on on the abomination that is calling herself queen.

"As much as I would like to be able to escort you while you conduct business, I reckon I might be an individual readily recognized in the community. Unless one of you can disguise me, I may be best staying and keeping a watch over our two dignitaries here."

Neolandus seems to shake his head at the idea of disguises.
"From what I have heard, you are all recognised heroes of the city after the plague and being personally given gold from the city for your heroic effors in front of many people." he stats, pointing this out. "With so many people venerating you, it will be difficult to walk about town unnoticed and the queen will be looking for you with her personal guard. She might even put a price on your heads so that the whole town would be looking for you."

Female Aasimar Cleric 9/Rogue 2) (HP: 93/93; AC: 25; FF: 21; Touch: 14

I did not join until after the second AP, so would probably not be as recognizable. As I was really not one of the heros.

Male Human Wizard (FC) 11 - Enchanter

And Jerin was talking about a magical disguise, not a mundane one.

I share your concern Neolandus, but I think a few days hidden and magically disguised we should be okay.

Llyra, we can pose as a retired couple of adventurers getting rid of some of our old magic that we no longer use. We can then pick up what we need and be out hopefully in a matter of days.
If we are spotted for some reason I can Dimension door us away and then we can be invisible back to our hideout.

HP 133/133, AC 26/14/23 CMD 22, F +13, R +10, W +17, P +22, In +11

Curnach rolled his eyes at the Seneschal's rather obvious statements.

Llyra, Jerin, I leave it all in your capable hands- although as I need no disguise to appear as an entirely different race or even gender perhaps I am better suited... I'll write a list of my needs anyway...

I posit with Alter Self at will Curnach's a good fit for this duty. We'll need some time to lie low and let Jerin craft too.

Master of Procrastination and Grognardia

before agreeing you should know, the longer you stay here the more dangerous things will become. More Assassins and Grey Maidens will come looking for you.

Female Aasimar Cleric 9/Rogue 2) (HP: 93/93; AC: 25; FF: 21; Touch: 14

Jerin, do you know how to teleport people away from the city? We could leave and find a secure place. And then teleport back to make purchases and tie up any loose ends.

Male Human Wizard (FC) 11 - Enchanter

Not yet, although I have been sudying it at length. If we do go to Harse then I could probably finish my studies and we could then return via that spell.

It was one of my 10th level spells I was planning to take.

Half-Orc Fighter 10/Ranger (Urban) 1 HPs 109/109 AC 30 FF 26 T 17 CMD 32 Fort +17 Ref +12 Will +5 Init +4 Per +14

"Could the queen invest in magical means to find us within the city? Would your disguises be able to thwart that? If not, then perhaps we are better off doing as Llyra suggested, leaving the city and one or two of us returning for brief moments to conduct business once Jerin's ready to do so."

Male Human Wizard (FC) 11 - Enchanter

If she tries hard enough she may be able to find us wherever we go. But...she may conclude if we have fled the city that we are no longer a big concern for her and as you say we can sneak in and out of the city. That plan is fine with me...I have already made the arrangements with my agents for such a safe place for teleportation when we are ready.

Female Aasimar Cleric 9/Rogue 2) (HP: 93/93; AC: 25; FF: 21; Touch: 14

Good, do you have spells that will assist with keeping her from scrying on us while we are in the city?

Male Human Wizard (FC) 11 - Enchanter

It can be done but I don't have the spells at the moment. Scrying on us for small portions of time while we are in the city is difficult and then trying to locate us quickly after that is even more difficult unless we are right next to a identifiable monument or building.
It can be done but once I purchase the proper spells we can make it difficult.

Male Human Wizard (FC) 11 - Enchanter

Hmmm, if the queen is as powerful as Neolandus thinks though, she or her allies could use greater teleport to transport directly to us after Scrying.
Maybe we should pick up a couple of spells right away?

Female Aasimar Cleric 9/Rogue 2) (HP: 93/93; AC: 25; FF: 21; Touch: 14

I do not believe that the Savored Sting grants the power to protect one from being scryed from afar.

If there are cleric spells that protect from scrying, let me know. I do not see any.

Female Aasimar Cleric 9/Rogue 2) (HP: 93/93; AC: 25; FF: 21; Touch: 14

I do not know whether the powers that the abomination calling herself queen is aligned with are abyssal, infernal, or something else. But, I would prefer to not have to be watching over my shoulder to see is they are spying on us. If you can get the necessary spells quickly without attracting undue attention, I think we all agree that it would be wise to do so.

Half-Orc Fighter 10/Ranger (Urban) 1 HPs 109/109 AC 30 FF 26 T 17 CMD 32 Fort +17 Ref +12 Will +5 Init +4 Per +14

In response to Jerin, "I trust your judgment in protecting us from arcane reprisals as much as anyone can. If the things you need toward that end are a matter of wealth, you are welcome to what I have to put toward it."

Master of Procrastination and Grognardia

after looking into the next ap, it actually has info on what Neolandus actually knows. I'll post it below so you are all on the same page as him.

• When Neolandus confronted Queen Ileosa about King Eodred II’s death, her response was to send Red Mantis assassins after him—proof enough of guilt to Neolandus. Through a combination of luck and knowledge about the castle’s layout, Neolandus barely managed to escape with his life and went into hiding with his friend Salvator Scream in Old Korvosa.

• After he recovered from the attack but before Salvator handed him over to the Arkonas, Neolandus spent much of his time in Old Korvosa researching the situation by interviewing key people, poring through records in Endrin Academy, and piecing together information and rumors he heard to try to determine what caused Queen Ileosa’s sudden personality change from a petulant spoiled queen to a scheming murderous tyrant.

• Neolandus’s suspicions grew, but until Queen Ileosa’s first public appearance after the plague, he tempered his suspicions with hope. He knew that Queen Ileosa had been “borrowing” the treasury key to look through Korvosa’s holdings. Neolandus was also familiar with several old and obscure legends about the chambers below Castle Korvosa. Chambers, it was whispered, that were old even when the Shoanti dwelt here, and that used to hide something of great power or evil.

There was little more information to go on, but he did uncover mention in some documents from Korvosa’s earliest days of something called "Midnight’s Teeth", and that these teeth were believed to be some sort of sacred relic of great import to the Shoanti. Circumstantial evidence indicates that the Shoanti kept these teeth in the chambers inside the pyramid that now serves as Castle Korvosa’s foundation.

• Neolandus’s further research uncovered an old legend that chilled his soul. Several hundred years ago, a powerful blue dragon and agent of Zon-Kuthon named Kazavon brought the orcs of Belkzen to their knees and began conquering the neighboring nations of Ustalav and Lastwall, until he was finally defeated and his remains scattered. Some of these remains, according to certain Zon-Kuthonic scriptures, contained fragments of Kazavon’s essence. One of these relics was the "Fangs of Kazavon".

• By piecing together his evidence, Neolandus suspects that "Midnight’s Teeth" were none other than the "Fangs of Kazavon". The description of the queen’s new crown sounds to Neolandus as if she now wears the "Fangs of Kazavon" on her brow, the implications of which troubles him greatly.

• Neolandus wasn’t able to gather much more information before the Arkonas took him, but he doesn’t suspect there was much more to learn. Hard facts about "Midnight’s Teeth" were sparse to begin with. Korvosa’s founders didn’t think it important to preserve much in

Female Aasimar Cleric 9/Rogue 2) (HP: 93/93; AC: 25; FF: 21; Touch: 14

Did your post get cut off? Seems like it stops in the middle of a thought.

Male Human Wizard (FC) 11 - Enchanter

So I think the plan is for Curnach and Jerin, magically disguised, to go into town and pick up a couple of spells then we all flee to Harse for a little while until I can cast Teleport and the spells I bought to hide us from Scrying and then we can make a few foray's into the city to buy and sell stuff?

Master of Procrastination and Grognardia

whoops forgot there was more on the next page. Reposting last memory.

Hard facts about "Midnight’s Teeth" were sparse to begin with. Korvosa’s founders didn’t think it important to preserve much inthe way of Shoanti culture. Yet there is still some hope. The Shoanti have very strong oral traditions, and if anyone knows the truth behind Midnight’s Teeth, that truth is doubtless hidden among their historians up in the Cinderlands.

We will need to spend the night in the manner though so I can prepare my magical disguise as well as an escape spell or two just in case someone tries to confront us or finds us.

Master of Procrastination and Grognardia

So are you going to spend the night in this dirty torture room, examin the door to the left, the double doors to the north or make your way out?

Check out the door

You enter the room and it appears to be a standard bedroom. No one has used the bed, but the room has been used, though from what you guess from the nature of that creature for meditation.

I meant imageshack. They're just suddenly flipped, saying you now only have a limit of 500 photos, which must be new cause when I first checked my album with this message I have 628 photos. I think they're just after money by making people "premium" members.

Master of Procrastination and Grognardia

You can't find any items of interest. The walls have various torture devices that would be popular at any temple of Zon-Kuthon or any other evil temple where they wouldn't use the impliments on themselves or willing subjects.

The double doors are immense in size and as you open you find the source of the power that turns the rotations of the labyrinth. There are four huge undead elephant beasts chained up to wheels with bells attached near the top. Each creature stands there deathly still and quiet, making no move. They have no meat on them, just the bones animated in unlife.

Though they are bound they are also really massive and the chain look slack on them so they can get a good reach towards you if they wanted, but for now each one is attached to the pillar.

Rajput Ambari

Knowledge Religion DC 17:

The creature is a Rajput Ambari. A rare creation of a undead elephant, often used to ride by those who use undead. Being only bone they have resistance to blades, but anything blunt will break the bones. They gain all the typical resistances a undead gains.

Knowledge Religion DC 22:

Being quite large they are able to trample their opponents and often do so if commanded to. They are also trained in being able to stomp their hooves down and create a shockwave to knock over opponents, making them prone and ready for crushing.

Knowledge Religion DC 27:

What makes these creatures attractive to necromancers and others who deal in magic involving raising or controlling the undead is that they are totally subserviant to the one who created them, allowing them to be easily controlled but the magic also allows them to understand the spoken word of their masters, making them obediant servants. Along with their immense strength, it makes them great beasts of burden for almost any load.

Knowledge Religion DC 32:

Horrors born from the depths of Vudra’s endless jungles, rajput ambari are undead elephants granted terrible powers through necromantic rites. Massive and terrifying, many of these earth-shaking undead behemoths retain the exotic trappings and elegant finery of the Vudrani princes who once doted upon them. The glory of such beasts is long forgotten, though, as most serve as unholy slaves and fearless beasts of war for uncaring necromancers and deathless masters.

ECOLOGY
The size of a Rajput Ambari varies widely depending on which part of the world the original elephant skeleton came from Vudrani elephants typically near 16 feet in height, while Mwangi elephants grow up to 18 feet tall. Juvenile elephant skeletons are almost never used to create a rajput ambari. In Vudra, undead elephants are feared abominations, but terrifying rumors tell of lumbering mastadons from the distant north being animated in rituals akin to those that create rajput ambaris.

HABITAT & SOCIETY
Rajput ambaris have no societal structure, functioning only as their creators command. Vudrani necromancers typically use rajput ambaris much like living elephants, though without the need for handlers. Thus, when encountered, most are found performing menial tasks, serving as guards, or transporting undead warriors.

Although rajput ambaris are unintelligent undead, necromantic scholars postulate that some facet of the rites used to create the undead beasts causes them to retain some vestige of instinct. The evidence of this theory rises in the rare cases in which a rajput ambari is left without a master. When no longer able to perform past orders or left without commands for weeks, a rajput ambari sometimes begins walking of its own accord. In these rare and seemingly impossible situations, the undead elephant tends to wander back to the lands where it was captured and might even readopt some of the motions and tendencies of life, much to the horror of local hunters and living elephants alike.

Creating a Rajput Ambari
A spellcaster of 18th level or higher can create a rajput ambari utilizing the create undead spell. In addition to the usual components required by the spell, though, the rite to animate a rajput ambari requires the full skeleton of an adult elephant and adornment of a regal bearing. At the very least, these additions add 400 gp to the spell’s total cost.

Origins of the Rajput Ambari
Although none can say who created the first skeleton or raised the first zombie, the rajput ambari is an unusual undead in that its creation is well documented in Vudrani lore. In 4465 ar, the necromancer priest Rajput Shivji Shashibhushan, known as the Vile Prince, gathered together his cult of followers in the mountains and jungles of northern Vudra and set about building a dark citadel, a temple to all the foul powers of Vudrani lore and a personal palace where his experiments would go largely unnoticed.

Shivji’s first need was labor. Labor that didn’t need rest or sleep to realize his grand designs. Thus, his morbid imagination fell upon the great elephant graveyards of the Ajitesh Valley. In short order, he raised an army of undead elephants, which his followers took to calling rajput ambaris. A combination of their necromantic lord’s title and the Vudrani word for the carriage house that living elephants sometimes carry upon their backs. With insight to see past his megalomania, Shivji left his minions susceptible to the commands of other worshipers of dark deities, bestowing his most trusted lieutenants with the knowledge to command them in his absence.

With the aid of his titanic undead, Shivji’s fortress rose with frightening speed. A citadel of a thousand thousand skulls he called the Palace of Ivory and Bone. Once the fortress was completed, dozens of rajput ambaris were put to work pulling the massive winches required to open the heavy, elephant-tusk gates of the citadel.

Shivji Shashibhushan’s war against the Vudrani mahajanapadas ended 40 years after the completion of the Palace of Ivory and Bone, with the necromancer slain at the head of his largest rajput ambari host. Even as his horror-filled castle eventually sank into obscurity and lore, Shivji’s rajput ambaris, his greatest feat as a necromancer, linger on even as his name is slowly forgotten.

They appear to be just standing there, the two on the right facing directly as you so you know that they must surely see you, but they have not reacted and just remain passive standing there.
