Telurion nods as Lara's shot obliterates the undead spawn. Allowing himself to breathe momentarily, he does look across the battlefield, at the monstrosity poised against them, wondering momentarily if they have the slightest chance against such a powerful enemy.

It is just a moment's thought however, since there is really no time to spend in reflection. Taking a step forward, he utters a divine prayer, to bolster his allies.

Can't really get in range to affect the Lich, but at least I'll cast it on us:

Move: 5' step forward
Standard: Casting Prayer (You and each of your allies gain a +1 luck bonus on attack rolls, weapon damage rolls, saves, and skill checks)

Guys, keep in mind that Bless is also up (+1 morale bonus on attack rolls and on saving throws against fear effects)

Your Humble Narrator

Durin Only:

Will: 1d20 + 9 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 9 + 1 = 13

Even deep in your rage, the power of this ancient Dwarf unnerves you...

You are Shaken until further notice.

Thane Fenris Will (Success): 1d20 + 6 + 2 + 1 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 6 + 2 + 1 + 4 = 18

Old Gorrak Will (Fail): 1d20 + 8 + 1 + 1 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 8 + 1 + 1 + 4 = 15

Durin cautiously maneuvered around the Lich, who warily watched the Dwarf's magical hammer. With the wights slain by crossbow volleys and Arachiel's blade, Thane Fenris produced a potion from his belt and downed it, his muscles swelling in size to even greater proportions as he prepared to assault the ancient King.

Old Gorrak had nothing left to give except his battle prowess. His spells exhausted, his faith spent in healing channels and his legs trembling at the foe he was to face, the veteran nevertheless charged right at the Lich, waraxe held high. He swung it horizontally; and the axe simply bounced off the armour, making not the slightest indentation or scratch upon it.

Charge Attack (Miss): 1d20 + 11 + 1 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (7) + 11 + 1 + 2 - 2 = 19

The rest of the Dwarves made sure both their comrades were stable and began to quickly assemble a stretcher for both of their fallen brothers. Two of them fired bolts at the Lich; King Kroma held their efforts in such contempt that he simply ignored the bolts glancing off his armour, focusing more upon the hammer-wielding Dwarf circling him. Taking no chances, the Lich stepped into his reach and rasped a word of power as he intercepted the haft of Durin's hammer with his flail. Mid-parry, King Kroma took a bony hand off the hilt of his flail, the fingers of the bone glowing with an unnatural red, pulsing light as he placed a finger upon Durin's chin. This close, Durin could see the ugly, iron orb that sat in place of the Lich's right eye; the left a glowing ball of pale blue, negative energy. It was the last sight he could make out before the agony wracking through his body caused blinding pain; pain like nothing the warrior had ever felt before...

Defensive Casting (Success): 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (6) + 21 = 27

Melee Touch Attack (Success): 1d20 + 10 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 10 + 4 = 32

Durin, please make a Fortitude save (VS a Su ability) and a Will save (VS a spell); in that order...

Spellcraft (Marcus): 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (4) + 15 = 19

Marcus:

You do not recognize the spell used. The Lich's motions and components are stylized in quite an ancient fashion that is not assisting your eyes in following the movements and words spoken.

Spellcraft (Telurion): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22

Telurion:

I will PM you.

Durin was out of range of prayer by virtue of Telurion delaying until after Durin's turn.

Crap, sorry Durin. I can't remember why I 5' stepped instead of moving forward...

Your Humble Narrator

Durin felt his muscles seize up as the Lich's bony hand grasped his chin and he jerked back in shock as an incredible wave of negative energy pulsed through his body. His eyes flaring in utter agony, the hardy Dwarf did at least manage to resist the sensation of paralysis that the touch had tried to impart upon him; but his body was brutally ravaged by the negative energy coursing through him. Barely able to stand with only his rage sustaining him, the shaken Durin was barely able to remain fighting.

Durin has suffered enough damage to reduce him to 1 HP.

Your Humble Narrator

Rage HP are not treated as temporary HP. You are at 1HP including your 21 from raging. Coming out of rage right now would kill you.

Male Human Wizard (Conjurer [Teleportation]) 7 (8)

Hm so if it gets another action then Durin dies... May I amend my ready to whenever it acts please.

Durin you need to retreat... There's nothing preventing you from backing off, even if you are raging. I cannot reach you and heal you, unless you move as much as you can towards me - withdraw full round action?

Even so, I don't think I can reach and heal him, unless Lara casts Haste or something like that... I'll be 5' away from him at the end of my movement, I think...

Still, if you delay on next round until after me, I can heal you+Life Link, and you can still charge back in. Risky, but...

Also AK, another active effect is the Bless cast earlier by Telurion?

Racked by unimaginable pain and on the very precipice of death, Durin's mind remains clearly focused on the incredible threat King Kroma poses... to his friends and comrades. Concerns for his mortal form retreat and he finds peace in the decision that he makes next. They will all die if I don't do something...

Your Humble Narrator

Barak fired bolts into the melee, but the risk of hitting his allies put his aim off and the bolts narrowly glanced off the Lich's potent natural armour. The group's Paladin was in his element now, Muir blessing his efforts and infusing both his form and blade with holy light. His blade flaring with power, Arachiel slashed through the adamantine breastplate, magical defenses and bone alike as the energy flaring through his heavy blade diminished the dark negative energy sustaining the corrupted Dwarf.

Lara's arrows completely missed, even her usual luck and prowess in archery not proving sufficient to pierce King Kroma's potent defences. Durin managed two powerful hammer blows despite his wounds, that left the Lich King staggering back from the onslaught, before Durin tried his gambit. King Kroma was distracted by the attacks upon him from multiple sides, but he could not fail to see through Durin's obvious ruse.

Despite both Arachiel and Durin proving able to overcome the powerful defenses that kept the spellcaster safe from most mortal weapons- King Kroma had not yet fallen. Clearly willing to fight to his own destruction in order to slay Durin, who would be far less likely to return, King Kroma hefted his two-handed flail high in order to finish the wounded Dwarf and was a mere moment away from doing so... when Marcus' magical missiles slammed into him. He survived the first two, but the third and fourth seemed to finally banish King Kroma's spirit from his remains.

The heavy flailed dropped to the ground as King Kroma's bones crumpled into a heap, the iron orb that had replaced one eye landing amongst it while the other blue light that was present in the skull faded away. With King Kroma temporarily defeated, it appeared the battle for the hilltop was finally over; as was Thane Fenris' quest to recover the remains of their ancestor.

With Gorrak's spells utterly exhausted, it fell to Arachiel or Telurion to save Durin before his terrible rage could no longer sustain his life.

His 3 rage rounds left would put him up to 55 HP in a pinch.

I think we will be here for a day recuperating. And yes Telurion, tell us what to do with the remains. ;)

Guys, keep in mind Life Link continues on ticking, and with Fey Foundling, healing pots and wand charges are more efficient on Telurion, when we are in 'downtime' - just sayin' ;)

I know that RP wise it 'feels' more natural/logic giving the healing pots to the severely wounded Durin, but since we are against a Frog God game, might be a good idea to push for the extra mile. Seeing as hitting us with a LICH when we are already worn out is also kinda harsh :D

In any case, if you down 4 pots, that means 4x5=20hp more from Life Link, so that's 54 out of 79

While Telurion surveys the scene of their victory, the link between him and Durin still pulses with energy, restoring the strength to his dwarven companion.

Telurion goes down to 22hp, then takes a moment to cast Cure Moderate wounds on himself.

Cure Moderate Wounds, Fey Foundling: 2d8 + 7 + 4 ⇒ (5, 2) + 7 + 4 = 18

Then back up to 40, stopping Life Link with Durin.

Last but not least, I am not sure if Telurion knows what to do with the remains, as per my last Knowledge (Religion) check. AK?

What I have no idea about is whether that soul can survive the destruction of the creature's physical body. That and how to go about either locating or destroying a phylactery.

If the phylactery does sustain the lich's existence then presumably its both hidden and well guarded. Unless Kiri comes back with a lead
I'm not sure what we can do beyond staying alert.

Gazing around, the wizard takes in the whole new piles of bone and undead corposes spread across the dwarven encampment.

Marcus turns to the dwarves. Well at least your digging is at an end. If your wounded can make it we should try for the fortified hill we cleared out yesterday. Stone walls would make for a more comfortable rest and we have hardly taken care all of the Desolation's threats...

Mistakenly assumed my religion spoiler did not use the p-word but it does so think this is a fair statement of what Marcus can be deemed to know.

Telurion can't really add much to your knowledge Marcus - only Lich vulnerabilities, abilities and some such ;)

Once Durin is safe, and even while checking the Lich's remains, Telurion is in expectation of the dwarven reaction after such a dramatic turn of events, moving to meet with them, and checking in on the wounded.

Lara scans the horizon warily as she approaches Durin. "Sorry about the arrow," she says with a pained smile. "I don't know what came over me."

No hard feelings. I know you were being forced. Besides, compared to what ol' pile of evil bones there did, your arrow was downright enjoyable. Durin gives Lara a smile and a wink.

Durin then gets to his feet. Ok, ok. Enough fussing over me. There are others that need seeing to. HP: 54 of 79

Having been listening in on Telurion and Marcus' discussion regarding the lich, Durin walks over to King Kroma's remains and picks up the iron eye orb. Holding it up he asks, Could this be it? The phylactery thing?

Alex has mentioned it prominently in two posts. ;)

I think it best if we relocate as well. If everyone is able to make the journey.

Durin then realizes Kiri is still missing. Where is Kiri? Marcus, can you still feel her via your link?

Male Human Wizard (Conjurer [Teleportation]) 7 (8)

Durin ... wait! Arg..

Marcus takes an involuntary step back and throws one arm up as the warrior picks up the lich's doodad.

Maybe, although I was thinking trap. It seemed pretty reckless which is the sort of behavior I'd expect if it had its soul somewhere safe.

The exhausted Dwarven warriors tended to their own, with the immediate danger having passed they took to the beers Barak had given them, too exhausted and shocked to even utter more than a numb nod in thanks.

Between Telurion and Marcus' considerable knowledge and divinations, they identified the phylactery as the iron orb eye Durin held. Old Gorrak listened carefully to their discussions as they surmised why the Lich would so brazenly display his one true weakness and offered a theory.

"Men... You can't forget he was a Dwarf first, and a Lich second. The stories tell us he was slain, utterly surrounded. Clearly, these tales were false. He was captured. Subverted to evil, likely tortured... The darkest of hearts love nothing more than to corrupt the greatest of good people. I would think... I think some part of King Kroma's twisted, tortured soul is ashamed of what he became. To commit such vast resources to slay his own kin and risk his own form so; I think he could not stand the shame of his kin knowing his true fate. I believe King Kroma sought to break the cauldrons and sink the boats. To slaughter us all or be destroyed in turn. Secretly, I think perhaps he had hoped to be slain, to be released. Or perhaps the process that made him a Lich simply rendered him mad."

Old Gorrak paused for a moment and exchanged glances with Thane Fenris, who was knelt solemnly by his ancestors remains, still encased in the magnificent adamantine breastplate, cloaked and bearing his centuries old battlecrown, the magnificent heavy flail he was wielding lying discarded upon the field nearby. Oddly, the Lich's bones seemed in immaculate condition- the massive blows from Arachiel and Durin seeming to not have harmed them at all. However, the bones were sickly looking, black and brown stains upon them that pulsed with magic seeming to indicate the corruption that coursed through the Undead being's physical form.

Thane Fenris nodded grimly back at the old cleric, having not yet said a word. Old Gorrak spoke for him, addressing Durin and gesturing with his axe towards Durin's adamantine hammer.

"Do it. Smash that thing of evil and free our King's soul."

...ten additional blows are struck, with Durin grunting louder with each hit. The tenth is a mighty one and finally the extremely durable iron sphere is split open and crushed under the head of his adamantine hammer. After a minute and a half of pounding on the orb, Durin's remaining energy is sapped and he steps back, panting heavily, to survey his work.

Could have used that crit earlier. :P

Male Human Wizard (Conjurer [Teleportation]) 7 (8)

Marcus blinks somewhat comically when the orb fails to explode in a torrent of fiery death but he smiles widely as the truth is revealed and the dwarven priest gives his explanation.

Then we also have the answer to the question of which dark god the dw.. lich served... Orcus the Corruptor.. Set perhaps to destroy potential enemies of his Master and Tsar?

We've managed a great thing I think. Even if we all fall tomorrow we've rid the world of an ageless threat. That is something to be proud of friends!

Marcus will study the gear once its been scanned for evil but takes care to avoid the implication that he is claiming it for the group given the dwarven presence.

Durin's eyes fall upon the magnificent adamantine breastplate. I bet that would look quite good on me, he muses to himself.

I just noticed that all the damage Durin did trying to destroy to the orb, when tallied, totals 333. How very holy of him. :)

Telurion offers a silent prayer as Durin smashes the orb - "Well done my friend" - then turns to Marcus - "Indeed. This has been a meaningful victory, in spite of all the loss it carried" - he adds, looking back to the dwarven camp.

"I say rest up for whats left of the night. Then bury the dead and head back to the camp." Barak stands "I'll take the first watch."

The orb proved incredibly resilient to even Durin's adamantine hammer, but as the blows rained down upon it and hairline cracks and fractures began to develop, a strange effect became discernible upon King Kroma's gear and remains. The black and brown corrupting influence upon the armour, flail and his bones began to crack and fade into dust upon the wind as the destruction continued. As the orb finally shattered in a small explosion of magical power that almost knocked Durin to the dirt, a soft, golden light of purifying fire seemed to pass over the bones, arms and armour; washing away the last of the corruption and clearly appearing to adjust the very magical properties of the enchantments upon them.

"Dwerfater's Fire- Behold!" Old Gorrak whispered reverently.

Thane Fenris himself knelt down and reverently wrapped the smooth, gleaming bones (along with the gray-bearded skull) in folds of exquisite silk, his movements almost ritualized and sacred in his care. With this done, Thane Fenris addressed the others and their suggestions solemnly

"Our new friends- our eternal battle-brothers, our rescuers. You honor those of us left from our original band by assisting us in our time of need. You honor our dead and ancestors by helping us to finally recover King Kroma; albeit that his final fate was not what we had expected. Durin, Barak, Arachiel, Marcus, Telurion, Kirilarien- and of course, our loyal expedition lead Lara Evangeline. You all have our utmost respect and gratitude. You are always welcome within our halls- and I firmly believe that the recovery of these bones will surely lead to Dwerfater's favor and the beginning of ascendance for our people. Now, we are all weary, so I will keep my decisions brief. We'll rest for a few hours and then my band will make haste for our home in the Stoneheart Mountains come midday. If you wish to accompany us; I will have the grandest feast prepared in your honour and a home away from home prepared for you in our sacred halls. If you do not, I will consider the feast postponed... and the invitation will always remain open."

Thane Fenris lifted the breastplate and handed it to Durin, having noted his eyes upon it. The breastplate was made of pure adamantine, giving another reason for it to be the hefty Dwarf he handed it to.

"The grandest piece of King Kroma's ancient battle-armour. Still as strong as the day it was forged in the hottest fires of our halls. I gift it to you and your travelling party and ask that you honor the Dwarf that wore it, not the twisted thing our last great ruler had become."

The armour is +3 Adamantine Breastplate.

The strong noble then handed the long-hafted, two handed flail to Barak.

"This flail was renowned as a holy weapon of Dwerfater. The tales say that King Kroma smashed the bodies of over a hundred Undead in a single pitched battle. The last time he was seen by a living member of our people, he sought to fight to the death, surrounded by foes. Before it was corrupted, this weapon knew and recognized evil where it struck it. I hope that in one of your hands, its great history can continue, the stain upon its legacy undone."

The weapon is a +2, Holy, Wounding, Heavy Flail.

Finally, the Thane handed the cloak King Kroma wore to Marcus, unclasping the silver, Unholy Symbol of Orcus and smashing it under a mailed foot.

"There is no history of a magical cloak that King Kroma wore into battle and it has no legacy to speak of. Nevertheless, I am certain it will serve you well in questing throughout this unholy region."

Cloak of Resistance +2

Thane Fenris was weary, but he was keen for an answer before he slept.

"Will you be joining us tomorrow?"

Female Human (Taldan) Bard 8 (archaeologist) Portrait

"You honor us," Lara replies to Thane Fenris, striking her fist against her chest lightly in a dwarven gesture of respect. "I don't presume to speak for the rest of them, but I am grateful for the offer of feast and hearth."

She looks around at the digsite(s) nearby, then looks to the others, deferring to their judgment.

Male Human Wizard (Conjurer [Teleportation]) 7 (8)

Marcus looks on at the display of genuine divine providence with awe.

We are truly honored to receive Dwerfater's gifts Thane.

He seems torn in response to the dwarf's invitation though and looks enquiringly at the rest of the group.

It is another most generous offer, particularly given the damage that either Durin or Barak could do to your ale stores, but our foothold .. more a toehold here in the Desolation is tenuous and we have companions whose safety may well be at risk.

Perhaps we should confer?

Miss E.. Lara would you care to join our discussion?

"Agreed" - Telurion nods, speaking when they have a moment of privacy - "We do have a path to thread in the Desolation, do we not friends? How long would it mean accepting Thane Fenris most honorable invitation?"

Conferring with the others, Arachiel says, "Agreed, Telurion. The Thane has certainly honored our band with both the gifts and the offer of a feast in his halls, but in my opinion, we have a mission that take precedence over any celebratory feast...no matter how much we may like to attend."

When Arachiel mentions the mission Barak nods in agreement.

Barak speaks earnestly to the thane "It has always been one of my greatest dreams to visit the Stoneheart Halls, but I must stay with my friends here. If I may I would but 2 things the first would be to ask you to open a dialog with The Onyx Anvil clan of the western reaches. We are a small clan of miners and trade is vital to our survival, the gems we mine are the finest quality I can assure you. The second thing I ask is we own an inn in The Camp, if it is at all possible could we buy some decent Dwarvan ale to sell. Id rather drink feted ditch water than that awful halfling dredge we are currently stuck with."

Barak then turns to Old Gorrak and says "May I have Dwerfater's blessing before we part ways.
