DM Alexander Kilcoynes Serpents Skull PbP- Chapter 1, Souls for the Smugglers Shiv
(Inactive) Game Master
Alexander Kilcoyne
"What I am doing here eclipses your pathetic lives. I am on the cusp of a discovery your fragile race has not been able to solve since the sky fell so long ago..."
Hi everyone. Congratulations to all who got picked for Alexander's game! For those who didn't, it doesn't have to be over yet.
If people are still interested, I'll go through those remaining this weekend and put together another group of 5 to 6 people. Then Alexander doesn't have to feel quite so bad for turning people down. Unfortunately, there are so many of you still left that I'll have to turn down some people too, but I see that 1 or 2 other DMs have also expressed an interest in running a group, so I'm sure you'll all find a place in someone's game!

I'll let Navior get his game off the ground first, and then see what comes next (he did post ahead of me after all). At that point, I'll most likely create a separate recruitment thread and let folks decide whether they're interested in applying there. I don't want to be presumptuous in assuming that all DMs are created equal, as I certainly don't enjoy the same tenure that the more experienced DMs have. :)
Navior, I'll most likely be interested. I have an idea for a gnome archivist with a keen interest in animals and plants, trying to collect details and drawing of Sargava's wildlife. Think a small sized version of Steve Irvine with a dash of Frank Buck from Bring 'em back alive.
I'm not at home at the moment, but can post a more detailed concept later today or tomorrow.
Mahjik is still keen to find a loving GM too. Currently only the concept is available (no full blown character alias). Repeated for easy access:
Mahjij the Flink
The Kaptain did not really know what to make of the little impish looking but always smiling Vudrani he had found among the casks. Sure, he gets along with the crew just fine. And he scampers up the riggings like an old deck hand - even though he swears high and low that he'd never been to sea before. But then there are the odd pantomimes. Like when he saw one of the nobles flourish a rapier and perform practice drills - the little monk copied the performance to all intents and purposes flawlessly. What made it so exasperating was that he was copying the nobles drill at the same time as the noble was performing it - like a mirror! And to top it all off, he did it with a mop of all things! Lord Cathart had been livid - and the smiling little man seemed genuinely flustered why such a fuss was made. It was a blessing that Lord Cathart disembarked at the next port.
Even so, the little man had an uncanny knack for glimpsing out weapons - or just about any article - on a person and proceeding to perform some outlandish martial dance with it. But Vudrani must clearly not understand the principles of modern warfare and weaponry - he was holding blades back-to-front, used hilts as stilts, swirling sharp edges about himself in a dizzying display of recklessness. A little like a monkey that was too intelligent for its own good. At best unintentionally dangerous to self and others, at worst a disaster in the making; but it never went wrong. Uncanny. In fact, the one time some freebooting shacklers tried to board the ship the little guy was on the front line wielding a spyglass and a bucket with such lethality that the perplexed pirates were routed even before their assault on the Jenivere could begin in earnest.
Rather than Gothrek, I'd like to submit Bandlewick Sealegs Weathervane for others GMs to consider; he was applying for DM Berwick's game whilst Alexander's was also up for consideration.
I would also like to submit a character if it's not too late for one of the alternate games. I have never pbped before and was a little intimidated by the complexity of some of the previous back stories and don't think my primarily hack and slash background would pass muster. I want to branch out and develop my rp skills but they are a little lacking atm. I'll post a character tomorrow if any DMs are still looking for players.

Have fun :) - remember, it is perfectly viable to build a powerful melee concept that is also a deep roleplaying experience.

Alexander:
It was definitely a very difficult choice. Lots of good options up there! And hey, runner-up isn't bad!
As it is, I'll be happy to remain an alternate if something doesn't work out for one of the other choices but I'd also be happy to stay in the running for one of the others who may be considering running the AP. So if you guys are still looking, please consider my unlucky sell-sword.
I actually made a new thread with this to apply for any game, but thought I should add him here too.
The "Great" Miguel
CG Human Fighter
Trait: Starchild
Basic Description:
Miguel is an ex-pirate, turned world traveler. He loves three things: Desna, travel, and his sword, though not always in that order. He is a fighter trying to become in truth as good with the weapon he carries as he believes himself to already be.
Miguel is a formidable sight. He stands just over six feet tall and weighs 200 pounds. He has dark hair and light eyes and a somewhat condescending grin ever-present on his otherwise warm face. He carries a falchion on his back and appears to be very comfortable with it's weight and that of his armor, like a man in a uniform. His cloak and boots are always travel worn for he calls only the night sky and his dreams home.
Background:
The Great Miguel was the firstborn of twins to a Calistrian prostitute who served in the temple in Ilizmagorti. Their father was first mate on a pirate ship, and after a particularly good hall he went upscale for some entertainment. That resulted in Miguel and Manuel. Miguel's small amount of training in the Calistrian temple gave him a basic knowledge of Desna and her domain over travelers. With a love of Desna Miguel's feet began to itch, and as they approached the age of majority they sought out their father with the help of a particularly found priestess and joined on his ship. Manuel was born with his fathers love of the sea, while Miguel loved the thought of exploring the world he was more drawn to the art of the sword then the call of the ocean. It didn't take long before Miguel couldn't handle the confines of a life devoted to the sea so he struck out on his own to explore the world and to master the art of the sword
Personality:
"Alone and outnumbered The great Miguel once bested three marauding pirates!" Miguel has been lucky. Though not really a personality trait, it has shaped his personality. Miguel believes himself to be better with the sword then he truly is. This primarily comes down to him defeating rivals he could not have beaten without luck to have given him the upper hand. Pirates who tried to board his ship while it was weakened after a good haul before getting to port found themselves always slipping on a loose board on the deck giving Miguel an opportunity to land a decisive blow. Or when boarding a merchant ship Miguel was faced with three superior swordsmen who were all dispatched by a snapped line that caused the sail to pull a loose rope tripping up their feet, throwing them off balance and right into Miguel's assault. Miguel is not completely unaware of his luck, but he certainly thinks its not quite as important as his skill. His personal motto is "Some say better lucky than good, I believe best to be lucky and good." His delusions of grandeur make Miguel rather fearless, and prone to stupidity. His worship of Desna and his history of everything turning out okay make the "discretion" part of valor a completely alien concept to him. He willing throws himself into the fray without thought of personal safety. He willing goes where others fear without worry of repercussion.
Aside from his superiority complex Miguel is a very likable guy. He follows his heart and encourages others to do the same. If he weren't so oblivious to danger he would make a good leader, as his refusal to even contemplate the possibility of failure is rather contagious. He has a joking, never very serious attitude, and even sees death as little more then just a journey to a new realm, and nothing to be saddened by.
I am able to commit to 1 post a day, and can usually do more. I am in Western US GMT -8
I's love Gregor Seawind to still be considered. I am very impressed with the depth of the backstories for characters submitted. I tend to do more basic backstories and feel out the character as I go along. However, I know that its hard to judge how good an rp-er is based on a simple back story. Just hoping to get into a game online as a player.
Good luck to all applicants and happy decision making to all prospective DMs.
Wow, this was a hard decision. I almost wanted to do two groups because I just couldn't decide. Unfortunately, I'm already running another pbp game, and to add 2 more on top of that would just be too much for me to maintain. So it's going to have to be just one group. I apologize to everyone I couldn't choose, but Mauvais is going to be starting up a game too, so you still have a chance there!
Anyway, I've chosen 6 people and 2 backups. Here's the roster:
Douena (Joana)- Gnome Burglar Archetype
Lorenz Aeryson (Wander Weir)- Unlucky Sellsword (Fighter)
Makoa (Dragonborn3), Half-Orc hunter concept
Aakif (pronounced ah-KEEF) (Zurai)-, Mounted Fury Barbarian
Mahjid the Flink (Lorekeeper), Monk of the Empty Hand
Urza Sha'rahad (Dax Thura)- Half-Orc Sorcerer
Backups:
Mjobo (Wrath)- Mwangi Barbarian
Gregor Seawind (Deadshot)- Cleric of Gozreh
I'll get the OOC thread up in a couple of hours and then post a link here.
Once again, sorry to all those I had to turn down. You'll get your chances eventually, I'm sure!
Backups:
Mjobo (Wrath)- Mwangi Barbarian
Gregor Seawind (Deadshot)- Cleric of Gozreh
Thanks very much for the back-up slot, Navior. Looking forward to watching the game unfold and hopefully being able to jump in at some point. Congrats to the first stringers.
Hmmmm... an alternate for the second round. Not so bad.
I'm actually struggling really hard not to put a game together myself and be done with it. Made my will save for this week, so I'll hold off for now.
Thanks for choosing me as an Alt Nevior. If the other DM is looking for a Barbarian, I'm still open for that too.
Cheers
Its in the blood, Wrath. I can feel that you want to. Go on. Do it.
Mwhhhaa hha hha haaa.
If he does lads, then I should all apply he is a very good DM.
Cheers
Thanks for the vote of confidence FW.
I'll think on it more before I commit to something though. I really want to make sure I can keep to a schedule and stay for the duration if I start a game this time.
Running a game will mean not playing in any, but then running games are often very rewading. I will see.
So, those of us with characters still resigned to the island of misfit toys: should we try and sort out who's still around, organize into semi-relevant parties (if a lot), and cast about for interested DMs? I don't really know what custom is in these parts, but I hate being passive about it.
it would probably be of benefit to organize the remainder of the applications, if just so that any DM that does wander this way won't decide not to look because they can't tell who is in and who is out.

That means a roll-call is in order then. I'm still here.
I took the liberty, since I recalled that AK had collected them all. With some editing done-- I don't count Reserves, since they're technically "not playing". These are they who remain.
I would much rather that my Halfling Druid, Bandlewick Sealegs Weathervane, be listed as my entry in this list. As the Pathfinder SRD has now been updated, I suspect that Gothrek will be recast as an Inquisitor of Erastil.
Given the recent spurt of interest in the Serpent's Skull AP and all those of us who expressed a desire to play but were not chosen for any of the recent groups that formed, I decded to create a couple of threads for us to form groups so that any willing GM can look there for players.
That being said I'd like to keep the groups small (between 5-7 characters)so that we stand a better chance of picking up a GM and not overwhelming him/her with too many choices.
What, all of the sudden it's gone as quiet as a church in here.
I took a suggestion from someone in this thread and ran with it and now only 3 or 4 of us want to be proactive in a search for a game.
Being "proactive in a search for a game" is a bit like putting a "job wanted" sign on a bulletin board. It may occasionally work, but the opènings are the limiting factor, not the available players.
I've gone quiet because i'm in the process of putting together material to run my own game again. It's really been a year or so since I was involved in PbP and I feel I have myself in a position where I can run a game again.
It won't be Serpents skull though. Most likely Kingmaker or Legacy of Fire since I have those AP's already and they are both great.
I guess if people are interested in either of those then keep an eye out for when I post up a recruitment thread.
On that note, TerraNova since we've played together before and I really enjoy your writing style, I'll keep a spot open for you if you're up for it. Completely your choice of course, but the offer is there.
Thanks, Wrath. I kind of missed the starting point for Kingmaker, but find the entire concept very interesting. If you'd start up a game there, I'd make certain to apply. Probably a young exile from one of the Aldori fencing schools, who wishes to wipe away the dark stain on his/her family's name.
