The claws of his demonic foes merely raked against Ricter's full plate as he rose, one pair not even connecting with him. His flail spun and then with a swift arm movement, stove in the head of one of the demons with a mighty swing, slaying the creature of pure chaos and evil.

Still need Fenna's action.

In Restov...

Kressle decided to keep herself to herself within the inn. The ex-bandit seemed a little ill at ease despite some assurances by her husband that she would be hung as a bandit.

The streets of the large city are a whirlwind of activity as you make your way to the estate of Lord Mayor Ioseph Sellemius- the word War is on everyone's lips and the activities reflect it- local criers are proclaiming the assurance of the Swordlord's victory and recruiters are aggressively seeking additional men for Restov's army. The mansion has apparently received some security upgrades since Casimir's last visit- trained guards patrol the grounds and garden that makes up the exterior portion of the estate and a iron palisade topped with spikes has been erected around it. Four small towers have been placed on each corner, even though the rear of the estate backs up right onto the buildings of another street. The entrance consists of a large metal gate, with a side gate allowing access to servants and those bringing in goods for the mansion. As the group approaches, they note a small group of city guardsmen manning the gate, watching you approach. Beyond the palisade, guard patrols are both numerous and frequent.

The man in charge of the gate guards, an sturdy man in his late thirties, an officer by the looks of his fine armour, stepped forward to greet you.

Lord Casimir, Lord Kip, Lord Kalev. he said in acknowledgement, a statement not a question. Its a pleasure to make your acquaintance. My name is Captain Drave. Lord Casimir, before you address the Swordlord Council, a few things of note. Spellcasting inside the estate is strictly forbidden without express permission and you will bring great harm on yourself by flouting this. The same can be said of naked steel, of course. As an envoy of Kardas, you are protected as a diplomatic ambassador; you have the right to refuse any duel challenge made to you. Do you have any further questions or can I be of any further assistance before you make your entrance?

Wincing as the arrows embed themselves into her breastplate, and stumbling to steady herself after the impact of Ricter's much larger and heavily armoured form, Fenna lowers her guard briefly and skirts around the edge of the cloud, almost inviting the demon to lash out at her.

Coming to a stop, the pale gnome casts a look up towards the archers on the ridge, and intones a prayer to hinder them, "Gifter Tailor, I ask that you weave a well placed tapestry to shield us from our foes."

With the close of the Azlanti words, the symbol on Fenna's buckler glints with a blue light, before a massive tower shield--Winged Eye emblazoned upon its face--shimmers into existence above the melee.

Move to F12 and cast minor image of a tower shield extending across the valley, about 10-15 feet up, in the nine 10' cubes above E11-J16, and another two at each side to provide the best cover.

Looks like the plan about casting message is going to be hard to pull off. GM AK, you have mentioned something about our use of message before - can we get a clarification of what we can and can't do with it. In this case, how long can we maintain it, and can Kip use it to "wiretap" Casimir during the meeting?

Restov

Captain. Thank you for the welcome. I will do my utmost to respect the hospitality of the council, and modify my behavior accordingly. I've never been one to refuse a duel, but let's cross that bridge when we come to it. Even though Lord Kip and Lord Kalev were not summoned before the council, they are as much representatives of Kardas as me. Would it be possiple for them to accompany me?

Your Humble Narrator

Yes I was going to say something actually. I was over generous in the use of the spell last time. Will be running it RAW, so your subject to both the spell's range as well as there being a restriction of a barrier. On the grounds, you wouldn't expect to have trouble with it. Inside however... depends on the walls thickness and material- wealthier nobility often line their walls with a sheet of lead to protect their estate from detection spells and other magic- regarding someone as important, wealthy and canny as the Lord Mayor, you would expect have more potent magical defences. Can't use it as a wiretap i'm afraid.

Restov-

The officer shook his head firmly.

I'm afraid not. The details were not made entirely clear to me, but the Lord Mayor mentioned something about "desiring to see an original member of the group sent south" and made it clear that only you would be permitted. Lords Kalev & Kip are welcome to wait here, or perhaps I can have arrange to have somebody attend them during their day in Restov? Give them a tour perhaps... he suggested.

Kamelands Ambush-

Remember that without a successful spellcraft roll or a will save when interacting with it, to Ricter and Malthir's eyes Fenna has essentially conjured a magical metal shield above you that you are sure will protect you against arrows. It also blocks your line of sight to the archers...

The two remaining demons appeared to be too focused on striking Ricter as he rose to lash out at Fenna as she repositioned herself between the two clouds of vapours. The mighty tower shield she conjured loomed overhead, with a small extension on the north end. The curses of frustration that came from the Gnolls above were no doubt music to the Gnome's ears.

Full Attack VS Ricter
1d20 + 15 ⇒ (12) + 15 = 27 Miss VS AC29
1d20 + 10 ⇒ (16) + 10 = 26 Miss VS AC29

The giant appeared to barely notice the shield just above its head as the misshapen foe lurched forward to strike at Ricter with his tree trunk- swinging it forcefully with both hands over the heads of the two remaining demons. The giant had a cry of joy on his lips as he roared his fury and swung massive blows, sacrificing accuracy for sheer power.

Having only just gained his feet, the Hellknight brought his shield to bear against the blows but it was eventually battered aside- only the divine protection of the great forces of Order within the multiverse and his newly enchanted full plate prevented the jarring slams he could only partially ward off with flail and shield from seriously injuring him. It was clear from the force behind the club that a single blow from this giant would easily slay a normal man and even Ricter himself might not survive two.

The two remaining demons shifted position a little to better protect their master. Their teeth and claws were a mere distraction for the two warriors, shields covering one another effortlessly as they focused themselves on facing the giant before them. The gnarled humanoid was two foot taller than Malthir even hunched over and the dents in Ricter's armour stood testament to the sheer power of its blows.

With 5 foot steps, demons now in D2 and D6.

Restov-

The officer seemed not to notice Kip's comment or perhaps he simply chose to ignore it. He nodded in acknowledgement to Casimir, who was led by two guardsmen into the estate through the gate. As he was being walked away the officer responded to Kalev's direct query after a moments thought-

I was given to understand you had taken fine lodgings of your own, Lord Kalev? But if the food there is not to your liking, I can humbly recommend the Ocelot. They serve fine, Rostlandic cuisine. Take the second right and its on the left he said, indicating which way to walk. Shall I inform Lord Casimir that he should seek you there once his meeting is finished?

The mansion was much like Casimir remembered it, but he had only seen the dining room and entrance on his last visit. The manor was well-guarded- and it appeared that the lower floor could be sealed off from the upper one by some impressive portcullises that had been installed. Small guard rooms complete with arrow slits had been added to some of the roomier corridors on the ground floor. The Lord Mayor clearly had expensive tastes- exotic pelts, fine art and imported statues from Taldor adorned the corridors on the upper floor as he was led upstairs for the first time in his life.

A few corridors later, Casimir found himself announced by a teenage herald in lavish purple clothing as he entered the audience chamber.

Presenting Lord Casimir, Statkari of the Barony of Kardas, Orator and Guardian of the Greenbelt, Aldori and Master Archer.

You may want to refer to my previous post with the information on the Swordlord Council on it- I have favourited it from my default "Alexander" alias for easy access.

Rather than a raised area for the room's authority in the north-west fashion popular with Rogarvia, Surtova and other Issian houses, the seven members of the Swordlord Council sat at a simple long wooden table, with an eight chair set on the opposite end from the Lord Mayor, several feet from the closest Swordlord. The seating plan meant that the Swordlords were sat in a cluster of seven around one end, with a notable gap between Casimir and the remaining seats. Casimir noted this would allow them to talk quietly amongst themselves where he would have difficulty overhearing. The room itself was a simple one- its only defining characteristics were several exits and the long wooden table and chairs that dominated the room. It was obviously not a room designed to make holding council a comfortable or pleasant affair.

The Lord Mayor Sellemius sat at the head of the table with his son and heir Swordlord Rickard Sellemius sat to his left. The Lord Mayor was a handsome man in his mid-forties but looked hale and healthy despite his age- indeed, he seemed to even have a glow of health around him that Casimir had not discerned when he last saw him, three years ago. Perhaps the zeal of an ambitious man seeing his plans come to fruition. His face was neutral as he watched Casimir enter. With a wave of his hand he dismissed both the herald and the dozen guards that had been stood around the small, rectangular room, who exited silently, leaving only the Swordlord Council and Casimir; although he noted they were one short of full attendance from the council.

His son Rickard wore an open scowl at Casimir as he entered- approaching thirty, he seemed ill at ease. Although his father wore no sword, Rickard had the hand on the hilt of his.

To the Lord Mayor's right sat his Lord Commander, Swordlord Mikael Lortovsky. In his mid fifties, he was probably the most famous of the Swordlord Council- indeed, his deeds had already been the stuff of bard's tales while Casimir was still a child. Few boys in southern Brevoy did not aspire to someday match the valour and honour of the "Man of Iron". Even at his age, Mikael was powerfully built at 6"3 and with wide shoulders and arms that would put many a seasoned blacksmith to shame. He would no doubt command the bulk of Restov's forces and his reputation alone was worth a hundred men or more on the battlefield. He watched Casimir enter with stern eyes, clearly taking the time to assess him in some manner.

Sat to Rickards left was the Gorumite Swordlord Alvar Orrick and to his left sat Swordlord Marcus Arzeltus. The Gorumite was almost as old as Mikael but was taller still- but while Mikael had few marks of war upon his flesh, Alvar Orrick's tattoo's and clothing seemed to have been chosen to draw attention to his. The man's face was hideously scarred by what appeared to be a spear wound and several other story-worthy scars were visible on his arms and upper chest, both visible in the simple vest he wore. He grinned at Casimir as he made his entrance. Marcus Arzeltus must have been at least sixty years old- completely bald and with a flowing white beard. He inclined his head in greeting at Casimir as he approached the table, being one of the two closest to him.

To Mikael's right sat Swordlord Stefan Maseri and Swordlord Herbert Orlowska. The former was in his late twenties, once squire to the Lord Commander and was renowned for the same unwavering sense of justice. He was speaking quietly to his mentor as Casimir entered, paying little attention to the heraldry announcement or the Statkari himself. The latter was the first to speak- a fashionably dressed middle aged man with something of a pot belly. He didn't have the look of a warrior about him, both eyes and mouth smiling warmly at Casimir as he addressed him, rising to his feet and crossing the room to extend a hand in greeting before he took a seat.

Lord Casimir! I trust you have missed Rostlandic hospitality after so long in the south. Pray tell, to whom do I need to make you acquainted with at our table? I myself humbly greet you as Herbert Orlowska and I know you've met our Lord Mayor in recent years.

Although the blows lacked the ferocious power of the previous ones, they were better aimed. The giant slowly took steps back as the fight began in earnest, seeking room for himself to fight, or perhaps to get out from underneath the massive shield above.

It did not take Kip and Kalev long to find the Ocelot. It was a nice looking place to eat, apparently with a wealthy clientèle. A true restaurant, rather than a tavern. Kip and Kalev both also noticed something else- the doors in the place seemed to open of their own accord, and empty dishes also floated gracefully to the kitchens. Empty tables were apparently cleaned by an unseen force as well, while servants seemed to only take orders and bring out the food in the busy establishment.

Malthir joined the two-on-one fight and eventually found an opening with stubborn swordsmanship. His taunt proved less than effective as his sword failed to penetrate the giant's hide- which seemed at least as strong and thick as steel...

Ricter and Fenna to act.

Ignoring the hostility from Rickard Sellemius, Casimir straightened in his chair and began addressing the council in a serious tone.

"I assume you are all informed about our success in exploring the territory, the settlement of the surrounding lands and the establishment of Swordhaven, Vierkirche and Northgreen, as mandated by our charter. So I will focus on some sigfificant events that have taken place in the last few months. Please, do not hesitate to interrupt, if you wish me to expand on certain points."

"Even though we have established a thriving colony, it has not been without cost or resistance - both in the form of direct assault and subversive acts from outside agents. We recently managed to capture a notorious troublemaker, who was directly responsible for several acts clearly deisgned to undermine the security of Kardas and threaten the safety of the ruling council. This instigator was put to death, but we are certain he was not operating alone, and his employers remain unknown to us at this point."

In the beginning of Calistria, while Lord Varn was on an official visit, Swordhaven was attacked by a giant raging owlbear. We managed to drive it off andf later slay it, with the aid of Lord Varn, but not before it caused significant damage to the city."

"Less than three weeks later, Swordhaven was again attacked, this time by an invading troll army led by a ruthless troll warlord named Hargulka. Again, the assault was repelled, but at great cost. When we later secured the troll stronghold, we discovered the following:

1. The trolls have been carrying out a series of organized, planned attacks in the region against locations where civilization has intruded on the Stolen Lands; Maegar Varn's fledgling Barony is marked on the map for raids, as well as Fort Drelev to the west. Some targets around Pitax had also been noted.

2. Hargulka was either staggeringly intelligent for a Troll to have organized this in such detail, or he had help from some very intelligent allies. Some of the intricate raid plans and notes on political situations as well as contingency plans were more ingenious than could ever have been imagined. Swordhaven itself was marked with the largest X; notably, this X was drawn in blood, and almost all of our villages were also marked.

3. Whoever drew the map took painstaking care to mark areas where Fey were known to reside and plan around them, even going as far as to add several days to a raiding parties route just to steer clear of their territory. The trolls were clearly avoiding the Fey of the Stolen Lands; or perhaps they had some kind of deal with them...

4. Hargulka's raids had fueled alliances with "several factions within the Stolen Lands from my personal share of the plunder"- but unfortunately, Hargulka was smart or paranoid enough not to write down exactly who he had brought into his alliance..."

Casimir pauses for a moment, to give the council time to absorb the information. He is also curious as to whether his rapport so far seems to contain any surprises for the council-members, or if they have already been briefed through their agents.

I'll assume you roll any relevant sense motive off-screen, Alex.

Restov-

The council listened quietly as Casimir spoke- although Rickard's apparent displeasure that Casimir did not reply or react to his words was evident. The Lord Mayor continued to watch Casimir intently- although he took sips from his water, his eyes never left the other man.

Casimir tried to seize up the attitudes and undertones of the council meeting with some difficulty. The Lord Commander's posture was unflinching and his jaw set and he showed very little reaction to anything that was said. He did notice a slight reaction from Alvar Orrick the Gorumite- although the man sat fairly nonchalantly, he leant forward a little when Varn was mentioned and he seemed to approve of the defeat of both the Owlbear and Troll host. Arzeltus was taking notes as Casimir spoke and his eyes were focused on his parchment.

Although he was obviously trying to mimic his mentor, the "Man of Iron", the young Stefan Maseri had apparently not mastered the impassive nature. His eyes betrayed sympathy to the struggles of Kardas, or so Casimir thought. Orlowska seemed full of empathy and wore a soft paternal smile; Casimir suspected he might have an ally there too. Again, it was he who spoke.

We have heard some travellers tales regarding these incidents, yes. It is good to have a first-hand account of them, for our scribes to commit to writing. Restov is not unsympathetic to your plight; but Kardas is now a strong economic power, with an alliance with the Order of the Chain no less! he said in mock surprise, still smiling softly. Hard-won spoils indeed, but spoils nonetheless. The Swordlord Council never expected it to be easy. In fact, the westernmost of our four little group of explorers were slain to a man... Tis a shame men with mettle like your Guardians were lacking in that party.

The Swordlord gestured for Casimir to continue, expectantly.

Ricter's law-enhanced flail proved no more effective than Malthir's blade, failing to do more than provide the giant's rock-hard flesh with mild bruises.

I think the others are used to how I describe things by now but for Ricter's benefit, essentially AC27 still a "miss". I still describe you physically hitting if you get past deflection, dodge, dexterity etc., natural armour is the very last defence IMO.

The giant continued to focus his assault on Ricter, the gnarled beast apparently noting that Malthir would need to scramble across the rocks to continue an assault. With Malthir's shield covering him as well as his divine and mundane protection, Ricter continued to take little serious harm from the incoming tree trunk swings; and he noted the giant was swinging with as much mind to deflecting incoming blows as he was to inflicting harm. The giant continued to slowly fall back towards his Gnolls.

Casimir smiles at Orlowska, never trusting the trained diplomat but none the less thankful that not every member of the council were as openly hostile as Rickard.

"Oh, we never expected it to be easy either, Lord Orlowska. Neither do we make excuses or falter in our commitment to expand and strengthen Kardas. I have not come here to beg for aid, if that is what you believe. I merely wish to convey the fact that the threats we have to deal with are not just wild animals and rag-tag bandit lords. We face at least one, if not more, highly intelligent and determined enemies, who are both hidden and obviously bent on destroying not only Kardas, but also the other colonies established by the expeditions sent out by this council. This may well be the reason the expedition into the western lands met with failure."

Pausing for a moment, Casimir carefully considers his next words.

"Realizing that there are unknown enemies out to undo all we have struggled to build, and put our citizens to the sword, was a deciding factor in the forging of the alliance you mention. In return for the promise of a stronghold they can use to marshal forces for a push into Galt, we have secured the aid of the Hellknights. This decision was not made easily, but the security of our people must come before anything else."

"That also leads directly to the latest development, one that directly concerns the current state of affairs here in Brevoy. A few days ago, a diplomatic party, lead by a Duke Demid and accompanied by a hundred or so knights, arrived in Kardas to negotiate the legitimacy of the Barony of Kardas. It seems Regent Surtova was somewhat perplexed by the wording of our charter, despite it bearing his seal and signature. We Guardians have no reason to love Surtova, but open defiance of the legal mandate for our barony would mean losing the support of the Hellknights, and leaving us open at a time where we are surrounded by hidden enemies."

"As a result, Baron Malthir and the Statkari ratifed a new agreement with the Dragonscale throne, promising to stay out of any internal civil conflict in exchange for sovereignty and autonomy. An agreement, we will have to honor. Restov and Rostland has the friendship and sympathy of Kardas, but we can not involve ourselves directly in the coming conflict."

Casimir again pauses for reactions before continuing.

The Ocelot-

Many eyes were certainly on Kip, who was aware that Detection spells without written permission to cast them were illegal in most of Brevoy. Sometimes adventurers were granted permits that allowed them to be considered legal spell-casters of the Dragonscale Throne for the purpose of many kinds of spells, but they were rare. More often, an adventurer or other spellcaster simply avoided such spells in public or paid the fine if they were caught.

A weary looking servant with greying hair had been approaching the pair since they entered.

Welcome to the Ocelot, sirs. Are you expecting further company or shall I find you a table for two?

Kip noticed something with his practised gaze, even without his cantrip allowing him to see magical auras. It seemed the unseen servants focused on one "quarter" of the restaurant at a time- which no doubt made seating far easier and more efficient. New patrons would be seated in a section that had just finished being cleaned and the servants would move on to the next section, which would then be the dirtiest and most empty until cleaned.

Orlowska "mmm'd" an acknwledgement to Casimir's initial point about the western expedition's failure before responding.

Yet the ex-soldier Drelev to your west in the Slough, a man who has declared his loyalty to the Dragonscale Throne not two weeks ago, has had a relatively easy time of it. We thought he could be trusted, but it seems he threw his lot in with the Surtovans quite some time ago. Orlowska informed the Spymaster with a wry but slightly grim smile.

Do you not think that it seems quite a coincidence that of the four expeditions, those with the most perceived loyalty and proximity to the Swordlord Council have met with such difficulties- those in the best position to offer Restov aid? the man asked.

Swordlord Varn has also had a very difficult time of it, according to his reports- while to the west near the Lebedan Lapdog's lands, our loyal adventurers the Iron Wraiths were slain to a man in mysterious circumstances. Drelev himself, perfectly placed to threaten the capital New Stetven itself, quietly switched his loyalties, perhaps some time ago.

The Lord Mayor spoke next, before Orlowska could continue. His voice rang with authority and perhaps with a little hardness to it, as opposed to Orlowska's friendly, light voice. He rose to address Casimir.

Swordlord Orlowska, with respect- the time to dance on eggshells and merely hint at our suspicions is long past. As the stars see me, young Casimir he swore with the well known oath, I had not hoped to meet you again under such circumstances. We believe you to have been dancing to Surtovan strings; I would like to believe unwillingly, but several on this council do not share my conviction he said starkly.

The orator Grigori, the troll King with mysterious allies with just enough clues to point to the fickle Fey as the instigators, a monstrous Owlbear... Your people killed in the hundreds as a result of these three threats and so many more. We know of the Surtovan attack on Sir Edric, a thinly veiled excuse to wipe you all out I am sure... And when that failed, who is to say the Surtovans stopped trying to neutralise you as a threat? "Ours is the right" they say, which may as well say "we do not give up" the Lord Mayor said, and he drew his belt dagger and drove it deep into the table before him, an angry note to his voice creeping into his tone.

Perhaps... perhaps Casimir, you were driven hard and perhaps, when a solution like the Hellknights presented itself, you did not think to question the timing of their offer... nor could you have anticipated that Brevoy could claim your charter was "unlawfully" given and the problems that would present to your new alliance. You have been kept teetering on the edge of collapse, fighting off more threats to your colonies continued sustainability in a few short years than most Baronies see in their entire histories... Who could have orchestrated such a tangled web of plots and kept it secret, if not the Surtovans? Who else would have the power, the influence?

The Lord Mayor fixed Casimir with a hard gaze, his eyes intent as they focused on him.

Do you believe there is no possibility that you have just agreed to refuse to take up arms against the very monsters responsible for the blood flowing in the Greenbelt today? The deaths of hundreds if not thousands of good people, your friends and countrymen?

There was no inattentiveness among the table now. With mixed expressions on their faces, the Swordlord Council's eyes were all fixed on the two men- the Lord Mayor and the representative of Kardas.

Casimir's face flushed red with anger as the Lord mayor spoke. He kept his seat, but struggled visibly for a few moments to maintain his composure. His voice took on a familiar note of cold hardness as he answered.

"I will do my very best to ignore the implication that we are either naive dupes or willing lackeys of the Dragonscale Throne, Lord Mayor. Of course we did not believe that the sudden arrival of Duke Demid was a strangely timed coincidence. We are well aware that we are pawns in a greater game. Whether it is Surtova or some other player who is pulling the strings is really uncertain at this point. But when you dance with the devils, you had best lead, and that is precisely what we aim to do - to become masters of our own destinies."

"Make no mistake. I trust the Hellknights about as far as I can throw one of their knight in a full suit of plate armor. But they are notorious for their commitment to lawful agreements. By establishing without a doubt our mandate to rule, we have ensured that the Order of the Chain cannot abandon our cause without breaking their precious word. And as to our treaty with Surtova. What have we promised? To take no part in the coming conflict - with what armies? Without the Hellknights, we can at best muster a scattered handful of poorly trained militia. They would be of no use to Restov. On the other hand, open defiance would not only have cost us the support of the Hellknights, but also given Surtova a pretext to invade, leaving your southern flank open to assault from an occupied Kardas. Instead, you have a neutral, but friendly barony securing your southern border."

Casimir lets out a deep breath, and most of the frost has left his voice as he continues.

"I can assure you all, Kardas IS a friend of Restov and the Swordlords. We owe our very existance to the support granted by this council, while Surtova has plotted openly against us on several occasions. And even though we have sworn not to participate in the coming conflict, there are many ways we can still aid you. We can offer a safe haven to any refugees, allow agents passage through our domain, trade food, weapons and other goods and ensure that no hostile forces crosses our lands to strike at Restov from the south. If Surtova should try this, the Hellknights will have no choice but to oppose him."
