The crowd reacted to the taunt, jeering at the Hellknight and repeating Casimir's taunts as well as adding their own, but any reaction the Signifer himself had was not perceived, his helm completely masking his emotions. He unbuckled his tower shield and tossed it aside, sword still held at the ready.

Casimir VS Grachius-

Very disciplined...He knows he has no advantage if he pursues. But at least he will be easier to hit without that wall of steel.

Moving in an ever tightening circle, Casimir moved around the stoic knight. Once he got close enough, he began to jab at Grachius with his blade, high, low, left, high...testing the Hellknight like he tested him before.

Casimir VS Grachius-

Grachius was ready for Casimir's approach and brought his blade down with terrible force. Surprised by the speed of the two handed blow, Casimir was unable to fully escape its path. Fortunately, between a desperate dodge and a partial parry with Brightclaw, his potent mithril breastplate took most of the powerful blow's momentum and although the flat of the blade made an impact even on his armour, the magical amulet Casimir wore prevented his skin and flesh from being injured. Casimir's own assault was defensive and cautious in nature, only occasionally getting past the Hellknight's sword to scratch his armour.

1d20 + 11 + 2 - 4 ⇒ (15) + 11 + 2 - 4 = 24

Readied action shifts his init above yours, you made your attack and finished your turn so back to him again.

Grachius relentlessly continued his assault, scoring several more hits on Casimir's breastplate with skilful sword-work- as he attacked with the flat of his blade it was clear the non-lethal ruling conspired to rob him of what would otherwise be wounding cuts. Casimir sensed the warrior would likely change his tactics again soon.

1d20 + 11 - 4 ⇒ (14) + 11 - 4 = 21

1d20 + 6 - 4 ⇒ (19) + 6 - 4 = 21

The duel had gone on for over half a minute and showed no sign of reaching any conclusion. The spectacle had drawn an ever growing crowd as the two worthy opponents continued to battle to a stalemate.

After announcing each spectacle, Fenna watched the competitions with her usual serene expression. She did occasionally lean forwards to gain a better view of interesting events, and smiles of encouragement to all of the competitors, but otherwise her first show of emotion was a flicker of surprise when Jhod was eliminated so quickly from the archery, and she was on her feet amongst all the others when that event reached its climax.

Laying the blue sash of victory over the chest of Korvus, for prevailing in the joust, the gnomish councillor speaks for the crowd to hear, "You ride well, Hellknight Korvus, Kardas is truly blessed to have your strong lance protecting us from our enemies. No doubt those who would spread corruption and discord within our lands will learn to fear your name."

Awarding Akiros his sash, red for the trial of strength, Fenna nods her head respectfully, "given all the efforts you have made to build Kardas' defences to what they are today, Statkari Ismort, it is only fitting that such strength--of character as well as body--should show itself to bring you victory today. On behalf of all the people of the realm, I thank you for all you have done, and all you have yet to do."

"Never have I seen such a fine display of archery, Statkari Bodevski," she says with a smile when Casimir approaches to receive his Green sash, "your unerring guidance, and ability to strike straight to the heart of things have made you an invaluable addition to both the Statkari, and the Guardians. Kardas, and myself, are truly grateful for your insights."

Casimir VS Grachius-

He's fast - and skillful. If we just stand here hacking away at each other, I'll lose eventually. Time to see if I can bait him again.

Shifting to a series of rapid strokes, Casimir abandoned his defensive style and attempted to force an opening, still striking with the flat of the blade.

Unsuccessful, he tucked and rolled, coming up in a defensive stance 15 ft from the Hellknight.

I miss my magic he thought ruefully.

Statkri Ricter VS Armiger Rutilus-

Armiger Rutilus was one of the more experienced armiger's in the Hellknight contingent, and stood ready to fight Ricter with his spiked chain gripped in both hands; wearing solid breastplate armour and looking a little nervous as he waited for the whistle.

1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17

Ricter acts first.

Just before the whistle blows Ricter speaks to the Armiger

"You will soon face one of the soldiers of hell itself, Armiger. It's fury will be beyond anything you have ever experienced - until now"

When it sounds he begins to walk towards Rutilus, his pace slowly increasing as he strikes his flail against his shield one, two, three times. Every strike sends sparks flying across the black metal.

Clearly rattled by Ricter's imposing forward march, Armiger Rutilus nevertheless attacked the high ranked Hellknight before him. His spiked chain whirled out behind him as he trailed it, sending it lunging for Ricter with a powerful flick of his wrists. Ricter took the lunge on his shield without any particular effort on his part.

Casimir VS Signifer Grachius-

Casimir's Aldori blade once more clanged from the plate mail armour as he leapt away before Grachius could attack. Grachius followed him with slow, inevitable steps and prompted a gasp from the crowd as he finally struck first blood in the duel with a controlled and swift horizontal slash- the flat of his blade slammed into Casimir's shoulder and numbed the arm.

Statkari Kalev VS Armiger Narsius

Armiger Narsius was the one tipped to be next to become a full Hellknight and was easily the most dangerous of the armigers in Swordhaven and among the strongest, having performed well in the strongman competition. Kalev had sparred against him before and beat him soundly, but that was when Narsius had been practising with sword and shield. He was now garbed in breastplate armour and was using an usual combination of weapons- a serrated, metal whip and a folded net, with two or three extra nets strapped to his belt beside his sheathed sword.

1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7

1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12

Narsius acts first.

As the whistle blew, Narsius surged forwards and hurled a net at Kalev, trying in vain to catch him before he brought his weapon to bear...

I'm assuming your using your polearm, which means that his ranged attack grants you an AOO despite being flat-footed (Combat Reflexes). Hes 10 feet from you and you have an AOO.

Using his finely honed skills of reading an opponent, Kalev anticipated the move and lashed out with the flat of Cleft, trying to test his opponents defenses.

Casimir VS Grachius-

Casimir retaliated, sliding his blade over Grachius' own and retaliating with a two handed blow no less powerful than Grachius' own that struck the Hellknight in the chest with enough force to wound him despite the plate armour. Now that the two men both stood their ground, the pace of the swords began to increase to a deadlier tempo. Grachius made several attacks designed to test Casimir's defences and then turned the Statkari's blade aside with a two-handed swing, using the momentum from breaking Casimir's guard to strike his unwounded arm.

1d20 + 11 - 4 ⇒ (18) + 11 - 4 = 25 Hit

Kalev VS Narsius-

The flat end of Cleft slammed into Armiger Narsius' head and completely ruined the man's aim- the net he threw sailed over Kalev's head and into the crowd and the move provoked a chuckle as a local merchant struggled in the folds.

I think you forgot to factor in the wind there, Narsius. Good thing it was a net and not a javelin, or Kardas would just have lost some business, Kalev says with a smile, before bringing Cleft about from the opposite site, trying to capitalize on Narsius' momentum after the throw.

Casimir managed to break the Signifer's grip with a powerful elbow smash upon the Hellknight's arm. The Signifer paused after Casimir's blow and staggered a little. He managed, with an incredible display of both the Hellknight full plate's armour flexibility and his own brute strength, to bow to Casimir despite the armour, before dropping to one knee.

I yield, Lord Casimir. It was an honour to trade blows with you he said, projecting his voice for the crowds to hear.

The crowds, who had truly favoured the popular Casimir throughout the bout, could not help but be impressed with the Hellknight's humility and honour. Nevertheless, the cheering for "Lord Casimir" was almost deafening as they celebrated his victory.

High above on a raised stage, Fenna mused on the implications of the duel- perhaps the people of Kardas would have a higher opinion of the Hellknights after such a display.

"The honor is all mine, Signifer. Your discipline and fighting prowess is does your order proud. No citizen of Kardas can doubt that the Hellknights are both able to show restraint and inflict proper punishment on those who deserve it," Casimir said gracefully, as he extended a hand to help Grachius to his feet.

Grachius took the offered hand and the pair walked off to have their bruises seen to. As Jhod's healing magic flowed through the pair, Grachius removed his helm and commented-

I could not match your swordplay, Lord Casimir. I confess I thought the bout was mine when you were in my grasp. Shall we watch the remaining bouts together?

Warden Akiros VS Hellknight Korvus-

Korvus brought a lance to the fight but had little opportunity to use it- Akiros willingly took a blow from the weapon to get inside its reach, slammed Korvus against the fence and knocked him down to the ground. Akiros then proceeded to use the two-handed hammer he favoured to beat the Hellknight into submission. The match was visceral and brutal; and over in less than thirty seconds.

Kressle VS Armiger Tygern-

The armiger was taken by surprise when Kressle hurled the first of her handaxes, tripping the man at range. The skilled ranger descended on the armiger and her axes seemed to work in a blur of motion, striking far quicker than anyone else in the tournament seemed able to. The armiger did his best to get to his feet and work his sword and shield techniques, but he yielded soon afterwards.

Hellknight Pellius VS Armiger Gruckalus-

Hellknight Pellius raised several eyebrows when he turned up to the bout with nary a weapon in hand, his sword sheathed in his scabbard. He promptly disarmed Gruckalus' axe and proceeded to defeat him with his own weapon, much to the crowd's amusement and awe.

Armiger Lurconorr VS Armiger Ursion-

A battle of flails and metal shields, this bout went on for almost as long as Casimir's duel with Grachius. Armiger Ursion eventually claimed victory by knocking his adversary out cold, but was barely standing himself. Those organising bets on the fight gave Ursion extremely long odds to win the tourney.

If you think that something like this could undermine the love and respect that the people of Kardas have for me, then I need to be defeated...and quickly.
he chuckles to Ricter.
Let's get this done. He then marches over to the field of battle.

Kalev was expecting Casimir to try to use his quickness and agility, but was surprised just how fast the nimble warrior could be, and Cleft only managed to hit his armor as he came charging towards the larger, stronger warrior and hit him with his aldori blade.

Kalev grunted, but wouldn't be detered, trying to keep Casimir at bay, before swinging Cleft in a careful arch.

Kalev, didn't that AoO vs AC 25 hit you?

Casimir slashed, parried, then moved in close again.
