Malthir grins for just a moment before settling back into his role as Baron. He was remembering when he was setting out, almost 3 years ago. Filled with the same ideas of "conquering" and people "fearing" Iomedae's justice.
Maybe Ricter was here for a purpose. Not only for his cause, but to learn more about who he could become. Maybe Ricter could learn from the Guardians, as he had. He hoped so for the people of Galt's sake.

Your offer to accompany us is accepted though, you have already proved your worth to Kardas. In fact we move against the trolls soon, I hope the day after tomorrow if the Guardians agree...please, take your leave we have a few more matters of state to attend to before we can retire.

After Ricter leaves...
Now is not the time to evaluate his request. My gut reaction is to say no, but I want to know more about this man and his order before we talk and decide on the matter. For now though two pieces of business.
First, we must decide on a suitable reward for Kardas' newest hero. I see he wields a flail, I suggest we gift him the magical one we just found as payment for his services. What say you all?
Second, do you agree, the trolls must be our next action? We must start to map the west until we find out where they are operating from and take the fight to them.

Sorry... minor retcon.
At Ricter's last comment, Kip sits up a little straighter upon his stool. Crushed? Invade? Cesspit? Animals? Pardon me, but this sounds more like the speech of tyranny, not liberation. Are we to assist in the subjugation of a free people? Kip looks upon the faces of his fellow Statkari.

Looking directly at Ricter, Kip adds, What if I were to tell you that I was once a slave in Cheliax? That my entire family was? Until we fled to Brevoy? Would that affect your opinion of me? Or your request here today?

After Ricter leaves...

Kip raises an eyebrow at Malthir. A reward? I was unaware of the policy... is this something new? Kip winks at the Baron.

I do agree that the trolls do seem the next logical threat to deal with.

I would like to add some additional information that my magical eavesdropping of Grigori revealed in the memory of some hooded hags that he had dealings with. In consultation with Jhod, it seems that Grigori has been to Heibarr. It is the most sacred place in all of the world to Gyronna and her followers- the ruins of a town destroyed by the chaos her followers wrought in the accursed place. The ruins of the town have been sacred to followers of the Hag for centuries; I have little doubt that some of her most powerful priestesses maintain a vigil there, as well as true hags...

It would be wise to keep vigilant with regard to plots against the kingdom... and its leaders.

Alex, is it your expectation that the gem of Gyronna is still in Kip's pack, or do you assume it is destroyed?

Your Humble Narrator

I assumed it had been destroyed.

I would argue they are not 'free' people, by any means Kip. The bloody, soul-trapping guillotines they call the 'Final Blades' are something I have witnessed myself, and the clamour and roar of the mob as innocent people are slain and their souls trapped at the whim of a crowd is to this date, one of the things in my travels that truly haunts me the most. Galt is a sick country, so sick that to heal the community one would have to conquer it first and begin anew; at least the chaotic kingdoms of the River Kingdoms do have some sense of stability or consistency in their rule, thanks perhaps to the River Freedoms.

Some of the Statkari look like they have more to say once Ricter has left.

Admittedly, I know very little of Galt or its people. My concern was the result of the tone and terms with which Ricter described his order's plans for Galt... and by association, if he has his way, the potential repercussions upon Kardas.

Before he leaves, Ricter responds to Kip's questioning

"Ha. Free people. Galt is not Andoran. It's a twisted perversion of it. The mob rules supreme. The lack of strict law doesn't give everyone a voice - it ensures nobody has one. Nobody gets a say in what 'everyone' thinks. And what 'everyone' wants is death, death, death. Farms lie fallow, cities are slowly crumbling to dust and the solution is always more executions. Everyone tries desperately to be totally unremarkable so that they can't be picked out as members of whatever group is to be used as the latest scapegoat. And Galt got that way because it's people blindly traded everything they had for vague dreams of 'freedom' and 'liberty'."

Ricter visably wills himself to calm down

"If you told me you were a fugitive I would realize that one recapture is not worth ruining the plans of the Lictor himself. But yes, I would seek to return you to servitude as soon as is prudant."

He looks defiantly around at the assembled Statkari.

"And yet in the eyes of Iomadae I am not an evildoer. If I was the Baron would have seen it and cast me out long before now. And I will tell you why. We of the Order of the chain have a saying. 'The chain binds both ways'. When an indentured servant is kept past their term of service, he can look to the Hellknights. When lord takes from his serfs what is not his by law, he will answer to the Hellknights. When a slaver plies his trade in a land that does not welcome him, he watches fearfully for the Hellknights."

He glares at Kip

"Hell. Knights. Don't be the latest fool who only reads the first syllable."

And with that he marches out of the room

Duke of Kardas, First Sword of Iomedae HP:51/76 AC:27 F:+14, R:+8, W:+12 CMD:23/24 P:-1 Init:+0 AOO:+16

Malthir has a little chuckle, Kip, you sure know how to make friends...his words were a little strong, but I have heard much worse in my own order.
Don't be too quick to judge him as I hope he would give you the same courtesy.
His actions so far have proved Ricter, at least, an ally. Eventually I will want to meet this "Lictor" and see what kind of man he is before we make any decision as well. Of course that might be a bad idea for the Hellknights plans.

As Ricter marches out of the room Kip looks to those that remain, A little touchy he is! I was only testing him... to see how he would react. I find it more telling when someone is required to react to the unexpected rather than listening to a well thought out and rehearsed speech.

I stand by my words however. That kind of single minded talk and rhetoric very easily translates into action in my experience.

And do not worry Malthir, I am surely one not to judge one's character quickly. It sounds like we will have plenty of time to properly judge Ricter's character. Kip smiles warmly. I believe things are going to be very interesting around here...

As for the people of Galt? It sounds like they need a little more of a live and let live philosophy...

Oh, and just in case it matters in the future, my family and I are not escaped slaves. We are Brevic through and through. I made that up to see how he would react. I'm just glad he didn't ask how many there were in my family... the temptation may have gotten the best of him. Kip smiles and winks.

While i'm not particularily keen on the man himself, his proposal would add stability and security to this realm. We're too small to really be seen as a threat to any of the River Kingdoms right now anyway, but our borders are all too often beset by monsters.

Akiros doesn't seem to have formed a strong opinion either way and remains silent.

Karrdas could demand suitable rreward for hosting these soldierrrs when the time comes to assault Galt... Sootscales muses. We could cerrtainly use the money.

Kesten clears his throat, before rising to his feet.

Ahem... I apologise for not sharing this news sooner my Baron, fellow Statkari. But I have been called back to Brevoy by my family. It has taken me some time to decide between my duties there and my new calling here but ultimately I am a man of House Garess. I will remain for the rest of this month in light of the Owlbear attack and then make my farewells.

Regarding Ricter, I was the one who made first contact with him. He was respectful, eager to help and apprehend Grigori and ruthlessly efficient in doing so. Provided you keep him on a leash, I think he could be very useful.

May I ask what pressing matters would take you away from title and land here in Kardas?
I will understand if you don't want to tell us.

There is the matter of who we should replace Kesten with...
Akiros or Kalev, are one of you interested in filling his boots? I know we don't have much of an army yet, but we have plans.
If you take on the responsibility of becoming the kingdom's general, who will take on your responsibilities?
It may be time to ask Kressle if she is ready to assume a role as not only your wife Casimir, but also as one of the Statkari.
What do you all think?

At Kesten's announcement that he's leaving, Kalev looks a little worried and ponders the situation before rising. Coming over to him, he graps the man's wrist in a warrior's greeting, saying, You've been a good friend and servant to the people of Kardas. I hope you know, you will always have a place here if the future wills it.

Turning to the rest of the Statkari, he adds I will take up the mantle if it be the will of my fellow Statkari. While I would rather roam the outlying lands of Kardas, if duty calls, I will answer. And with all these happenings in Brevoy and elsewhere, it may be time we started thinking about our defenses, though we shouldn't move too fast or raise too big an army, as that might draw a preemptive strike from one of our neighbors.

As for the flail, I'm content with donating it to our Hellknight, as none of us shall use it. Furthermore, I agree that the trolls must be our next priority. I fear that if we do nothing, Kardas may well be doomed.

After finishing his wine and sensing that the discussions are winding down, Kip stands and addresses all those present, Ladies and Gentlemen. If there are no other pressing matters to attend to, I would take my leave that I might make preparations for the troll hunt.*

Kip bows deeply to the assembled Statkari awaiting his dismissal.

A look of sudden thought creases his face and he looks up at Malthir. M'lord. What is to become of Grigori's remains? I should shudder to think what would happen if his corpse were to fall into the wrong hands. Fenna, perhaps you can set it up with Jhod? Make an general statement that his remains have already been cremated.

We set off the day after tomorrow and should start a systemnatic hunt for the troll scum that has plagued our kingdom. Going west from SwordHaven we should search and map the areas so we don't miss their den. We will slowly work our way south to eliminate the chance that we miss it.

Your Humble Narrator

Kressle is happy to serve as the Marshall, a role she would truly be more comfortable in than General anyway.

Her modifier is +2.

15th Calistril

After a few days recuperating, shopping and dealing with matters of state, you are ready. With Ricter in tow, the Guardians of the Greenbelt ride out of Swordhaven, heading west past the site where Malthir's old enemy Karas slaughtered dozens of Gnomes simply to lay a trap for him. You continue west out of Kardas' territory, steadily approaching the Skunk river.

1d100 ⇒ 68

1d100 ⇒ 67

You have travelled for a little under half the day, reaching the river when you begin to hear raised voices ahead of you. The river makes a sharp bend here, widening into a deep pool dotted with lily pads and fringed with waving reeds. Several freshly felled trees lie beside their stumps on the shore of the pool, their crowns dangling in the water among fading tendrils of mist. You appear to have come across a very new logging camp, set up on the edges of the deep pool. However, something strange is clearly happening.

The majority of the loggers stand near the felled trees, fists clenched and in some cases weapons drawn. Their fury is evident, and it is directed at the pool thirty feet away. There are ten of them total, in leather armour and brandishing handaxes. Opposite them at the edge of the pool are three more loggers, these ones facing their fellows and holding weapons up in a small defensive line. Twenty feet behind them in the centre of the pool, a small sized, feminine head watches intently as the loggers continue to shout and direct their anger at her.

Seeing you approach, the leader of the loggers strolls over to you, arms raised in exasperation and greets you gruffly.

Hail, Guardians. Would you care to assist me? This vile f+%&ing Fey has bewitched three of my men. Its darn hard enough for an honest man to make a living as a woodcutter without these fairies trying to run the show!

Might I ask you to refrain from using such vulgar language when addressing your lord and Baron? It is also similarly unwise to invoke such hatred of Fey creatures and then ask one of their bloodline for help! Kip smiles before leaning over bringing his face closer to the man while looking directly into his eyes. What seems to be the trouble my good man? Perhaps we can be of assistance?

As Kip addresses the loggers, Malthir immediately whispers, Iomedae, show me the evil that lies in creatures hearts.
60' cone of detect evil springs up that should just catch the creature in the pool and the men. He will listen to the conversation that starts up but will try to determine if any creature, strong in evil intent, are among those here...

Casimir pulls his horse up along side Fenna, and softly mutters. "A lot of flaring tempers here...we'd better see if we can't get everyone to calm down a little, before someone decides that axes solve problems better than words."

"As our learned Magister explains, such prejudice is misplaced," Fenna says to the woodcutters, though sparing a glance towards the Hellknight riding nearby, "The Fey of the Narlmarches number amongst the allies of Kardas, I have no doubt that some compromise can be reached here."

Dismounting, she steps a little closer to the pool to call out to the creature submerged within, "Perhaps, good Nixie, you might be willing to explain your actions once this gentleman has had his say?"

After Fenna has spoken, Ricter also addresses the...thing in the water

"And make sure the explanation is a good one. Assault with Compulsion Magic is a crime within the boarders of Kardas"

He too dismounts, not trusting his mount to serve him in the presence of a Fey creature.

Kip arches an eyebrow at Fenna's mention of the Nixie. A Nixie? I'm not sure I have ever met a Nixie before. Fascinating.

Kip looks on in bemusement at Ricter's apparent discomfort. Both with the lovely fey creature, and with his own horse.

In a pleasant voice, with perhaps a bit of his mirth revealing itself in his tone, Kip remarks to the Hellknight, Now Master Vorsk, let us not be too hasty in our accusations. The use of compulsion magic to avoid violence, and or, in one's defense is not a crime. Besides, and I'm not entirely positive on this, being relatively new to the exploration game myself, but I don't believe that we are within the borders of Kardas currently. I believe that shortly after we crossed the waters of the Skunk river on our westerly track we passed out of Kardas proper. Perhaps I misspoke a moment ago when I called Malthir their lord and Baron. For this I offer apologies.

Kip looks to the others for confirmation.

Casimir shifts his horse closer to Ricter.

"Kip has the right of it, Ricter. We hold no official power in these lands, and while these loggers might be citizens of Kardas, our past experience has taught us to respect the people and creatures native to these lands, and listen to their complaints. We have found that often wins us allies rather than enemies."

Yes, calm down people and let us and this aminably, Kalev says, recognizing the fey creature. It would be a shame if anyone was hurt or injured. Tell us why you are fighting and we will try to solve the situation.

Your Humble Narrator

Malthir:

No evil auras are present in front of you. Not even the Hellknight.

Glaring up at Kip, the man responds-

Urgh, one of you weirdos mated with one of these things? Disgusting. I thought it was Gnomes that did funny things to stay alive, not 'alflings. I do hope ye can help though, tho', but I ain't gunna beg. Coraxs the name, sorry for the language, I ain't used to flowering my speech. Basically we came here to cut some trees in this glade and make some money; these are coachwood and worth a pretty penny back in Brevoy. We didn't know we was in some pixie's garden! We heard some funny noises and sometimes a mist of fog would cover us, but we figured it was just some prankster and ignored it. Next thing we know, the damn fairy surges out of the pool and bewitches three of my men with magic!

Corax lowers his voice so that his men can't hear him. Now, Kort, Ernie and Bors are good lads, so I ain't cut through them to stop 'er yet; but I will if I must my lords. I'm losing patience, money and face with my men.

Corax's attitude is currently unfriendly.

The Nixie is close enough to hear Corax, and responds to Ricter and Fenna in a calm fashion, her voice melodic.

He is missing out some detail. I did ask him and his men to leave, politely. He threatened and I quote- 'to hang me from a tree and drip dry me'. The trees they felled despite my protests had been growing here for two hundred years and they deserved better than to serve as some grubby peasants slop table. Note that the borders of Kardas do not extend into this glade, man of metal. I am aware of your kingdom's laws, or lack of them.

The Nixie is also currently unfriendly.

Corax turns angrily on the Nixie, roaring-

You liar! You gave no such warning before you captured my men!

The Nixie begins to respond, also raising her voice. Its clear this could descend into a fight before long.

Duke of Kardas, First Sword of Iomedae HP:51/76 AC:27 F:+14, R:+8, W:+12 CMD:23/24 P:-1 Init:+0 AOO:+16

Malthir let's the situation build a little before interrupting.
ENOUGH!
Malthir dismounts and walks over to Corax, letting him know is really in charge
In a gentler voice...Corax Do you want my help? Do you want these men free? Do you want to go about your business and make money for your men and your families?
Your other option is to fight it out with this person and face her magic alone.

Malthir walks over to the edge of the pool and looks into her eyes,
And you, would you rather fight these men and make enemies of them? Enemies that may return with more of their kind at a later date and do something horrible to these woods like burn them out to be rid of you?
We are not your enemy, in fact fey are counted among our friends.
Listen to my words, I speak the truth, you will not find another human that will speak to you more plainly or more truthfully about your situation.
We can help both of you, but it comes at a cost. If you decide to allow us to help settle this dispute both parties will abide by our decision and our terms.
True Kardas does not rule this land, but we are the Guardians of the Greenbelt. We will listen to both parties and we will rule as good and decent creatures should.
What say you, do you want our help or should we mount up and leave and you can figure out what happens next?

"Enough." Fenna says firmly, raising her voice barely enough to be heard.
"Both of you," she continues, looking between Corax and the Nixie, "it is not important now who gave warning to whom, or who gave what threats. Butchering each other will solve nothing, you both have cause to feel wronged, but what has happened cannot be changed now."

"Corax," she speaks to the logger, "when you felled these trees, if as you say, you did not know that this place was home to this Nixie, then you cannot be faulted for your actions. Now that you do, however, do you really feel that it is fair to continue your operation without her consent? Would you be content to stand by while strangers harvested your home for resources? Surely you can find some other place to work your trade?"

Turning to the Nixie, she continues, "Your home has been damaged by these men, but I am sure it was no intentional slight towards you. While I understand you are angry that such old trees have been felled, the damage is already done... would you be willing for to those trees which have already fallen to be taken, on the condition that your home not be interfered with again? Indeed, many gnomish enclaves work together with the local fey to secure sustainable lumber, perhaps we could find some similar arrangement so that this situation does not occur again... but if we are to work together, I ask that you forgive this incursion so that we might begin without any bad blood between us."
