Your Humble Narrator

I think everyone has a good enough idea of where they are and what they are doing not to need another map update.

Kalev's axe screeches off Karas' breastplate, the half-orc's axe just barely held in check by the armour.

Bad luck- AC21!

Ilya is up, and then Fenna.

I was prompted to post for Ilya, but I was waiting for a round summary. :P

Ilya carefully aims and fires his longbow at Karas...

Attack 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18
Damage 1d8 ⇒ 4

...and misses.

Sorry, DM is doing assignment in the background ;). I was thinking magic missile but yup thats a miss :P.

Seeing that the longbow is no longer pointing at him, the trapper quickly tries to break free and make his escape.

1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11

Unfortunately, the webbing holds firm...

Just Fenna and then its time to hurt Malthir...

The once-priestess of Aroden then turns her gaze to Karas, and urges her mount towards him.

Fenna:

Your spell had no effect- it seems the Gnome had already been killed before you arrived...

Karas lunges for Malthir in two heavy swings and for Kalev in another, his dual blades working to bolster his defence while he overstretches his reach to strike at the giant... He only manages to strike Malthir once and his blow against Kalev is stopped by Fenna's protective magic.

His blades whirling furiously, Karas deflects Malthir's sword enough so that the blow glances off his breastplate, wincing as Casimir takes advantage of the distraction to stab him in the back. Staggering slightly, the hulking man stares at Malthir with pure hatred in his eyes.

The expedition should have been mine!. Not your cowardly brother, and certainly not the runt of the litter! I lost everything, I was disgraced by the Swordlords... Surtova pays handsomely for your death, and it shall be so!

Just Kalev left to act then i'll put up a round summary/map update.

Kalev barely feels the axe strike his target, before everything turns black and he falls to the ground, severely wounded.

Your Humble Narrator

Kalev's axe swings and cuts Karas in half just below the breastplate armour. The arrogance on his face is replaced by indignant horror as his upper half slides away from his lower half. Karas' death is instantaneous from the shock of the blow. Kalev lies near death, bleeding from a pair of brutal wounds.

The trapper, sick of being unable to escape the webbing- collapses and awaits his fate, hoping for the promised mercy Ilya spoke of.

Ilya gets a slightly queasy look on his face as Karas falls to the ground. With a shaky laugh he calls out, "Looks like Karas couldn't hold his temper and... went all to pieces. I have this belligerent covered, could someone please heal Kalev? It wouldn't be very good for public relations if the people thought their government could violently die at a moment's notice. Once he is patched up we can take care of this one over here."

...(after Kalev is healed)...

Ilya turns to the trapper, lips pressed tighly in annoyance. "We have a problem. Problems are meant to be solved and I usually relish the chance to impose my own small share of order on the universe, but some problems are more difficult than others. Like people-problems." Ilya is talking with his hands as he converses, a trait picked up from his merchant background. "People-problems can be tricky, hairy, sensitive things. They have many possible avenues of approach and many possible outcomes. The range of options, however, is narrowed considerably depending on the power differential between the two parties."

He motions to the webbing containing the trapper, "Like right now. I offered peaceable surrender, to which you agreed through compliance until my back was turned. You do know that you are within the territorial interests of the nation of Kardas right now, don't you? This is not simply a matter of highway banditry, you have attempted to take the life of government officials, not to mention the sovereign monarch. That is an act of war."

Shaking his head, Ilya clucks his tongue and sighs, "But I suppose you only half-broke our agreement. Which is why I will spare your life." He folds his hands together behind his back, "You are free to go, but only when you no longer bear a stitch or scrap of clothing or equipment on your person. You may leave when you are as naked as the day you were born." The elven mage draws a wand from his belt and points it directly at the trapper. "Or you will be executed. The choice is yours."

Ilya, I would prefer to capture one or more of them alive to question and then hang. Remember what they did to the Gnome's, there should be no walking away from this today! he says with a little bit of irritation in his voice at hearing the offer of letting one of the men that just attacked them go free.

A few minutes later assuming we have secured the prisoner's he stands by Karas' body pondering as Casimir walks up.
"He was no doubt a deadly opponent Cas. I can see why he would defeat almost all men who would come against him alone. What a waste of talent. The evil that fester's in men's souls can consume them if they let it. Now these poor Gnomes are dead. Maybe we can find out who they were and what they were doing here. They died in a senseless plot to kill us.
Sometimes I wonder if it is all worth it, all of this pain people seem to want to inflict, often because of us..."

We will take their equipment, detect magic on it all, and then scout the area to try and find their camp or any alive Gnomes in the area.

Your Humble Narrator

Your out of initiative.

The trapper quickly begins stripping off, but when Malthir speaks of questioning he sighs heavily, glances at Ilya and opens his mouth. The mans tongue has been cut out. He continues to strip off his equipment, hoping to be allowed to walk free.

The surviving slaver is secured, regaining conciousness but still blinded and suffering the other effects of colour spray. The remaining Gnomes are found nearby, collateral damage to Karas' evil. Casimir lays his hand on the shoulder of the Paladin.

He was indeed mighty, but he failed to understand that no man is so strong that he does not need friends at his side. This is why you stand here today, as Baron of Kardas, and he lies dead in his own blood. His arrogance and pride became his downfall.

And have no doubt. We are building a better land - a better future! A place where no man will have to fear the likes of Karas.

Grasping the surviving slaver, he hoists the man upright and waits a moment for effects of Fenna's spell to clear.

Listen up, scum. Count yourself lucky you are still breathing. Whether or not that continues to be the case depends entirely on how willingly you answer our questions. The trapper shakes his head at the question, and gestures towards the north-east. Its likely he lives in one of Kardas' many villages. When asked how many miles, he puts both hands in the air, all fingers and thumbs. The mans eyes well up in tears of gratitude as his wound is healed.

We have a great way to travel, it seems. Best get moving as soon as possible.

Kalev, you may want to put Karas armor to good use. After all, your current one didn't do a very good job.

We don't have any spare horses with us, right? Did the gnomes' wagon have live horses with it? If so, we can go back and get them. Otherwise, the trapper can ride with me. With my new, lighter equipment, Shadow should be able to carry us both.

Kalev puts on the looted armor (with a little help from Malthir, who is more familiar with heavier armors) and makes sure he has all his gear before saddling up for the ride.

When we get close to your home, I suggest we use stealth and guile to approach, so as not to alarm the soldiers.

That would be wise. Any rash actions from our side could spell certain death for the hostages. We must see if we can get a look at the situation and plan accordingly.

I am fine Cas, Iomedae healed all of my wounds. It is a pity the soldier escaped our justice, I wanted him to be an example for those who stand againast us. Yes let us press on to this man's house as soon as we can. How many hours headstart do they have? Malthir asks the trapper pointing to his fingers again.

We could do one of two things, Ilya do you still have that invisibility spell left? If so we send in either Fenna invisible to use her color magic on them to try and render them unconscious or we send in Kalev invisible to keep them busy while we charge in. Any thoughts? Fenna could end a battle very quickly but she doesn't have near the defenses that Kalev does.

Remember that I also have a spell that can turn me or one of you invisible, yet only for a brief time (4 rounds). So several of us can approach unseen, if there is quick and easy access to the soldiers and their captives. But let us not waste time planning now. Much will depend on what we see when we get there.
