DM Alexander Kilcoyne's Kingmaker PBP- Chapter 2
Game Master
Alexander Kilcoyne
"Hellknights! You are welcome in Kardas. We have seen better times and chaos surrounds us. Kardas is the shining light that leads the way out of the chaos."
Baron Malthir, formally welcoming the Order of the Chain in Kardasholme.
Would all of these people/characters make a post as soon as possible to confirm they still want their slot.
The alternates for this campaign are-
The backup slots are given to-
Tanner Nielson (Goblin)
Digger (Dwarf Druid/Fighter)
Fritz
Vanulf
First order of business- for everyone's benefit but especially mine, can Barator, Malthir, and JaceDK give me a definitive class they want to start play as.
Calix and Evan, feel free to start statting up your characters for my approval; but please don't forget to post so I know your still playing.
I would like character gens to be finished by next Wednesday (the 9th) if possible; I understand weekends are busy for most people and this gives you two weekdays to work on the character as well.
I will make an IC thread on Wednesday evening, introducing you all with a spoiler for you each to read, and some general text.
To any lurkers and those who didn't get a place; this thread is 100% lurker friendly, post as often as you like here. I will not be looking at the thread for this game in the Gamer Connection forum; you have been warned.
To anyone who wants to be able to e-mail or MSN me with regards to the game, use the following e-mail address-

On a final note i'm still wondering how best to handle the maps etc. on here; wil make a decision this weekend. I recall some people had objections to Google Wave, do any of you have any objection to me using Wave as a medium for maps etc.?
Casimir(hp 52/52, AC 25/16/20, CMD 22/23, F: +6, R: +10, W: +4, init: +5, per: +9 Human Bard 5/Fighter 2)
Casimir begins play as a fighter - full stats in this profile.
First question: is Fenna playing an Oracle that can also heal? Still leaning towards cleric that can also fight but that would make up my mind for sure. Of course even if I played a cleric, having a second source for healing would be a plus so I could actually fight every once in a while instead of just healing the fighters LOL's.
It seems we have plenty of fighters in this group.
Fighter
Cavalier
Fighting Cleric
Oracle
Unknown? I think you were throwing around a mage though, could be pretty handy... :)
I didn't see any rules for character creation except for stats.
What about startin gold, hp's, ect?
Thanks, MAD
He starts out as a fighter, but will take Bard at lvl 2, then another level of fighter and then Bard until lvl 9. From there, a last Fighter level and then Eldritch Knight.
Combat Roles:
- buff/debuff through spells, bard performance, intimidation etc.
- Secondary melee fighter - He will hit pretty often, but will lag a bit in damage until lvl 3, where he picks up Arcane strike and Power Att.
- Ranged fighter if the situation calls for it and he should happen to get hold of a bow.
- Secondary healer. He could easily pick up CLW or pack a wand for back-up healing.
Out of Combat Roles:
- Negotiations
- Interrogations
- Intelligence gathering
As for Barator, some sort of arcane caster would probably be useful. We also need a skill-monkey, but I guess I could fill that role somewhat.
Don't worry too much about filling traditional party roles. Other than not wanting full class duplication (I don't want two of the same class) its all VERY flexible as far as i'm concerned.
Hi folks. Sorry I have been out of touch so far today, been pretty busy. Been up for about 8 hours, and just sat down to have my breakfast. Didn't think it would be that hectic today. LOL.
I have no objection to GoogleWave, in fact, I was excited about seeing GoogleWave in action for something like this when I heard you were looking at using it. My wife was in the Beta and had a lot of good things to say about it.
As for my character, I was pretty interested in going with Paladin for her when I wrote her up, but I can fill other roles as needed. I see that we don't have an outdoorsman (something I think might be helpful to the group) or a arcanist.
If it isn't too much to ask, I would love to be able to post up what I'm looking at playing on Sunday after curling up with the book for a bit. Given what we have I'm looking at Ranger, Paladin, and Wizard/Sorcerer. Right now I'm just dealing with my prep for my home game tomorrow, so don't have as much time as I would like to figure everything out for a character.
I will keep my eye on the thread today some more, and reply as needed, otherwise I will be back here on Sunday if that is good with Alex.
Good luck, all. I'll try and keep an eye on this game but if I miss a recruiting call please feel free to send me an e-mail at
mlenehan1(at)yahoo(dot)com.
Thanks for the spot, this is the profile I was posting from in the previous game, but I'll probably make a few tweaks once I get home on Sunday, depending on the rest of the party. This is probably going to be my only post until then, since I'm at a convention--off to run some PFS soon.

All Oracles can do a little healing (since they get the cure spells for free)... but that's about the extent of it, so I really wouldn't recommend relying on Fenna as a primary healer.
I like that we have two of the new APG classes in the group. I have not had a chance to playtest any of them, or even read up on the details of what they can do, so it will be great to see them in action.
In regards to healing, with both Fenna and Casimir able to cast the cure spells, we have two secondary healers. If Malthir or Barator end up making a Paladin, we have three. This should be more than adequate to get us through the lower levels, but may start to hurt as the opposition gets tougher.
Of course, there is always Leadership, which it looks like both Evan and I plan on taking. A cleric cohort could be a fine way of adding extra healing power without demoting one of the PC's to "walking band-aid" status.
As Malthir pointed out, we have plenty of martial characters in the group. A woodsman wouldn't hurt, though, so I'm pretty sure that a ranger would find ways of making him/herself useful. Likewise a Paladin is always nice to have around, especially if we should happen to run into any dragons, undead or evil outsiders.
Then there is the matter of arcane casting. Casimir will get almost full bardic casting, eventually getting lvl 6 spells and CL 18. But this makes him a secondary caster at best. Again, a cohort could be the answer, if Barator wants to make something other than a Sorcerer or Wizard.
These are just my random thoughts about the party composition. IMO, the most important thing is that everyone picks a class they would have fun playing.
In terms of the Wilderness side of things, Fenna does have Survival as a class skill and maxed out; but DOES have negative wisdom. When her guiding star is visible in the evening, she is kick-ass at it though lol.
Fenna i've just been looking over your statblock and everything looks great. Same with you Casomir, it all checks out. The wording on that second trait confuses me somewhat though, can you fully clarify it for me?
Malthir looks like your almost done :); it look's like your not planning to go straight cleric is that right? There is absolutely no pressure from me to ensure the group has a Cleric; in fact i'd prefer you to play Paladin if thats what you'd like most :). I suspect you'd enjoy a Paladin more than a Cleric with an Oracle in the group but thats just my thoughts.
In response to JaceDK's post which ninjaed mine, my own spattering of thoughts;
In fact, if Malthir continues making this Cleric as he has him so far with the Glory domain; that looks like three leadership feat users.
You have plenty of healing for this module, don't worry too much about that. Malthir is either going Cleric or Paladin, both are powerful healers. Add to that the oracle can blast out an almost silly amount of Cure spells; the Oracle is effectively a cleric sorceror.
On the subject of cohort's i'd better make this pretty clear now- I won't want the cohort's to be adventuring with you. The stay-at-home cohorts are fine; especially if you want a trusted ally to fill some of the leadership roles. I think it's important I make that clear in the early days, especially as some of you have the natural leader trait. I might compromise and allow a single cohort to accompany you on adventures and you can tag in and out as you see fit; we'll see.
@Fenna
I think the written Prophecies are a great plot tool. Do you want creative control over them, or can I use them?
Looking at the party now, I see my bias for high charisma character's has shown through lol. Edric, what Order were you thinking?
As another point; I won't be monitoring trail rations and horse feed in this game. I'll assume your characters have about two weeks food carried with them on every excusion; beyond that you'll have to start thinking about foraging.
I would like one volunteer to be 'Calendar Man' and keep a written record of the party's exploits, dated. Any takers?
Final Edit: Just seen Edric is going Order of the Dragon; which means you have another character who has gained Survival as a class skill. It also makes him a kickass forager while your exploring; adding 1/2 his level to Survival checks for that purpose.
Considering the sheer amount of melee in this group, the 'Act as One' Level 15 Dragon ability is awesome.
The Magical Knack trait gives me +2 CL to my bard spells, as long as that don't put my CL higher than my total number of levels. I'l clean up the wording in the stat block.

Purely caster level though- it won't mean your casting higher level spell slots than your bard/EK levels allow you to cast; but it means the duration/effects that are dependent on caster level are more powerful- and your more likely to beat Spell Resistance.
Calendar Man; Your journeys will begin on the 1st of Erastus, year 4710.
Btw, what favoured class do you have? Fighter I assume?
With some handy help from Jace (tips hat) we have a group google site up and running which we can put group documents up on etc. Can each of you post me an e-mail address I can invite you to the site with? You may need to create a google account if you do not have one. If you aren't comfortable posting it here, send me an e-mail at

Eager to see what your doing with Malthir; any update?
Yep, following your advice for Paladin. I will tweak his background a little to match it. We might be a little light on healing until I get my lay on hands though. Lets hope we drop the any enemies quickly!
One last ?, I took a craft skill, are you okay with us crafting some initial equipment with ou money? I was going to have it as part of my background? Just my armor, took craft armorsmith. Thanks MAD.

Sure, it's negligible enough to me. As long as you got the gold. let me know if you can get on the site ok.
Okay, Malthir is 99% complete. Look him over and let me know if you have any ?'s. Thanks MAD
The only minor gripe is you have Common, Elven and Celestial listed with no rank in Linguistics; with a +1 Int bonus you only get one of those languages.
Hey folks. Just sitting down for the day to figure out the character. I'm still leaning heavily towards Paladin, but we shall see. Knowing that we have some folks that are Survival trained is good, didn't know those classes had that.

I don't mind taking charge of loot.
** spoiler omitted **
I'd prefer to steer you away from Paladin to avoid class duplication if at all possible. Current group is-

Oh, OK. Had talked about the character initially being designed as a paladin in first post, but was able to move things around, so I will look at changing then I guess.
Fenna i've just been looking over your statblock and everything looks great. Same with you Casomir, it all checks out. The wording on that second trait confuses me somewhat though, can you fully clarify it for me?
Is that question for me? If so, the second trait also provides a +1 trait bonus to will saves against the spells and spell-like abilities of fey, but since trait bonuses don't stack, then the +1 trait bonus from Indomitable Faith overrides that particular benefit.

I haven't decided on any details for the prophecies yet, so I'm happy for you to use them however you see fit... you're in a better position to come up with something that makes sense within the plot of the AP anyway.

I think the remark about the trait was for me. The character generator I used messed up the description of my Magical Knack trait because I don't have any Bard levels yet.

^ Yup.
Ok everyone should be able to get access to the site now *fingers crossed*
DM Alex,
I had a little detail on how I received the charter in my background, although I tried to leave it pretty vague. Was that stuff okay or do I need to take it out as part of the inro you will be doing for the start of the campaign?
Thanks, MAD

I liked that part of the background- I was going to tie everyone's intro's to their backstory where possible anyway, so you don't need to change anything.
Anyway, I figure that I will end up with Sorcerer rather than Wizard. I was leaning in to wizard to start with and think I may be better in a lot of regards that way, but I do love Sorcerers and all.
Sheeting her up now, and will put her up in my profile in a little bit.
Alex, for background trait should I take the Noble or Rostlander? I think all the nobility relates back to Issia, and we were never major nobles so Rostlander seemed more fitting with my understanding, just wanted to see if that agrees with your knowledge.

Rostlander did seem to make a fair amount of sense.
