They aren't (potions question). I'm not a fan of co-operative crafting, and besides Jhod is very busy. Between PC's, i'd probably allow. I don't like the material components from the Adventurers Armoury (too much creep), so consider them outlawed, sorry. I seem to be saying no to a lot in one post, its not my normal style but on those particular issues no.

Can we go ahead and order a few of them through the equipment order we are placing with Oleg? Malthir wants 2 of them (100gp), anyone else? We have 2 potions of protection from Evil already that we bought from Bokken still around that we need to plan on using if we encounter somthing obviously evil. Maybe we should use some party funds to craft a few more potions of CLW, let's say 4?

Last but not least Malthir would want to ride out to Bokken's the next morning to check on Noleski's condition and to see if Bokken has made any progress on his cure. I figured maybe a day of rest and mourning for Edric would be in order anyways.

Good idea, Mal. Four potions of CLW sound about right. I doubt we'll need more for a while. I also vote that the Party Fund pay for the wand of burning hands, which is then given to Yelena for use (which has sort of already happened. This should go for all wands and similar expendable items that we find and can use, IMO.

And yet...would you look at that...five shiny gold pieces, right here in my purse...as if they never left. ;-)

Your Humble Narrator

This order at Oleg's will take a week to arrive- the materials to craft the full-plate are about the upper limit that Oleg can handle (500GP) per item.

Are we doing what most Kingmaker groups are doing and converting any loot not claimed into credit with Oleg?

Your Humble Narrator

Credit or gold- Oleg's actually doing exceptionally well lately and can mostly cover your gold expenses.

After his tale. Casimir spends a little time circulating among the crowd, and also finds time to slip off and share a private moment with Kressle to congratulate her on her full redemption.

He then helps Malthir and Kesten arrange Edric in his armor and move him to the barn to be with Talia. An honor guard is arranged, with the watch being shared between Casimir, Malthir, Kesten and any of Kestens men wishing to participate. (Yelena, Vaysh and Fenna are welcome to join if they wish, but this is more a martial thing).

Once this is done, he turn to Oleg.

Oleg, Sir Edric's death is a hard blow for the Guardians. Not only was he a fearsome warrior, but he was also our best tracker and explorer. I am afraid we will have a hard time continuing our exploration, unless we have some extra help. You know the men who come here better than any. Is there someone, you think we could trust to join our numbers, and help fill the void left by Sir Edric?

What about Kalev here? Oleg asks. Hes a good hunter, tracker, and hes looking for work. What say you Kalev?

Before Kalev has a chance to respond, Casimir looks him up and down and says, Aye, he certainly looks capable, and your word of recommendation carries a lot of weight. If you wish to join us, Kalev, meet me in front of the trade post tomorrow just after dawn. I do not mean to brush you off, but tonight we keep watch in honor of Sir Edric and this task deserves our full attention. Goodnight, both of you.

At that, Casimir turns and briefly speaks to each of his surviving companions, informing them that a new candidate for the Guardians will apply at dawn, and that they should be present if they wish. He then goes to the barn to take his watch on the honor guard.

Once his watch is over, he slips out the gates and joins Kressle, who has set up a small campsite in the woods just beyond the bustle of the trade post.

Hi, sorry for the inactivity. I got in very late last night, as there was a delay on the flight home. I'm reading the thread and hope my posts make a little sense :)

As Oleg tells about the events of the past month, Kalev listens intently.

When he tells about the trial of Kressle, Kalev nods and says, Aye, the woman had to take responsibility for her actions, that's for sure. Even here on the frontier, there must be justice, and seems like what happened to her was a lot kinder than what might have been expected..

He takes a sip of ale while Oleg continues, adding, Sure, the Greenbelt's got plenty of opportunities for those who are willing to work for them. As long as they don't cause any trouble, I welcome them.

Kalev gets up from his seat and shakes the extented hand (plus any other that is offered) with an equally strong handshake.

Certainly, the area could use some form of law and order, though I hope it will not carry every aspect of "civilized" life with it. After all, I like the paths and trails, though good company is always appreciated. Let me buy you lot a drink.

Before Casimir leaves, Kalev says, I'm deeply saddened by your loss of a comrade, though I did not know him. From the tale you have told this evening, he sounds like a good man. I will meet you tomorrow, and we can discuss this further.

Right, caught up, will add 500 gp of gear as instructed. I'm off to see my mother, but will be back later today.

As dawn breaks, Casimir strides from the woods towards the trade post. He is equipped in full combat gear. Kressle is nowhere to be seen.

Once at the gates, he greets the waiting Kalev and any of the other Guardians who have chosen to be present.

Good morning, Kalev. By now, you have no doubt heard of the work we do and the dangers we face. And while I have no reason to doubt Oleg when he tells me you are a capable tracker and warrior, I have always preferred to give a man the opportunity to prove his own worth. I trust you have no objection to this.

Casimir nods towards the weapons carried by the half-orc.

You seem like you know how to handle those. Show me, he says, as his dueling blade whistles from the scabbard. He starts a slow, well measured dance around the hunter, buckler held on high guard and the sharp aldori blade gliding smoothly through the air in defensive patterns.

Casimir waits for Kalev to attack. He is taking the full defense action.

Come on Kalev, show us what you are made of, don't worry about hurting Casimir, he needs a good bleeding every once in a while and a bump on the head might knock a little sense into him. winking at Casimir.

I heard that Fenna, the man may know the area, but can he fight with us? Between the Spiders, Centipedes, and Boars, better that this man can hold his own. Looks big enough, but can he fight?

I can provide my own healing if need be, Fenna. And don't worry - we will get to the tracking part in due time. Now swing away, Kalev.

Kalev grins and looks to the rest of the assembled people, saying, Good thing I'm not fighting his rapier tongue...quite wordy, isn't he?

With that, he grasps his longspear with both hands and assumes a fighting position approximately 10 feet from Casimir. Slowly, he circles his opponent, studying his stance and looking for an opening. Kalev knows that it isn't always he who strikes first who strikes last and is willing to wait.

Ah, you have the patience not to rush into an enemy, and know the value of keeping him at a distance. But are you quick enough to keep me at bay?

Acrobatics to move though Kalev's reach and into close combat - 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (5) + 11 = 16

I don't think a total of 16 beats your CMD, so you get an AoO, Kalev

Casimir darts swiftly past the longspear, but not quickly enough for the veteran hunter, who jabs at him as he closes. Once in close combat, the duelist bard strikes with his blade, obviously taking care not to seriously injure the ranger.

Regardless of the outcome of the AoO, Casimir stikes with his blade, dealing non-lethal dmg only.

Attack roll - 1d20 + 6 - 4 ⇒ (13) + 6 - 4 = 15
Damage roll - 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7 (Non-lethal)

Distracted by his unsuccessful attempt to bypass the spear, Casimir timing is off by a split-second, and his sweeping stroke glances off Kalev's armor.

Well, you certainly can move, I'll give you that, he compliments the ranger as he raises his defenses once again.

As Casimir tries to move past his spear, Kalev twists his grip, trying to strike him with the shaft, but the swordsman dances past the attack, almost scoring a hit.

Attack Roll/Damage (non-lethal): 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 41d8 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11

After the blade glances off on his armor, Kalev steps to his right, swinging the spear in a low arch, trying to hit Casimir's leg, again missing.

Attack Roll/Damage (non-lethal): 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 111d8 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11

That was close. Glad you're not a bear, or I fear I'd need a new suit of armor. Of course, had it been a bear, I might actually be able to hit you.

After the sparring ends-

Investigation by Malthir reveals that Bokken's regeneration potion was a resounding success- the boy's arms have fully grown back, although it did have a side effect- Noleski is now an extra foot taller, although luckily he still seems to be in proportion. The boy is in high spirits, and you have a chance to spend time with him as he was packing his things at Bokken's in preparation to leave. He has had a small wooden scabbard made for the sword Malthir gave him, and he wears the toy proudly on his belt.

You have a good grip on that spear - let's see if you can hold on when it counts - Slippery Steps.

Casimir takes a careful step back that brings him outside the reach of the spear, and releases his slimy spell. The shaft of the longspear is instantly covered in a slick layer of ooze.

Not my best dice rolls :)

This provokes an AoO from Casimir.

Casimir easily sidesteps Kalev's wild charge, but instead of countering, he lowers his blade and nods with approval.

Impressive. I should think this covers the martial aspect of this little test, wouldn't you all say?

Sheathing his blade, Casimir motions for Kalev and the rest of the Guardians to follow him back towards the forest where he came from.

Kalev, you should know that I was very pleased to see you keep a cool head and consider you actions wisely. We fight many different opponents, but we never kill without cause or destroy without reason. We are just as likely to choose the route of diplomacy, if we think this will provide the best results. Remember, we aim to make these lands safer for all who would live here - and that does not just include the so-called civilized races. For instance, we have managed to make a valuable alliance with the wolves of the forest, as you may have heard, Casimir says to the tall half-orc, as they stroll into the woods.

After a few minutes, the group comes upon a small patch that shows sign of having been used as a campsite for the night.

Now, to your skills as a tracker. You have already met Kressle, and you no doubt know of her skills when it comes to moving about the forest undetected. She is waiting somewhere in these woods with breakfast ready. The sooner you lead us to her, the sooner we eat. Casimir smiles.

Kalev smiles as the test combat is over. You fight well, I hope I will never have to meet you in real battle as an opponent. I don't take a life, unless it is necessary. I had not heard of your alliance with the wolves of the forest, as I just arrived here yesterday, but it sounds like an impressive feat. Though the wolves only attack when hungry or threatened, they normally shy away from human contact.

Kalev follows the group into the forest and sets to work on the lastest test, I hope she isn't too far off...breakfast sounds like a good idea right about now. Then silently, he starts examining the area for tracks.

Survival (including +1 from ranger ability): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (20) + 9 = 29

It doesn't take him long to pick up a set of tracks leading off, and Kalev sets off into the forest assuming the rest will follow.

Malthir enjoys the show of arms and other skills and congratulates Kalev on holding his own vs. one of the Guardians. DM AK any thoughts from Kesten or I assume his voices his approval as well?
Malthir follows and and talks more with Kalev about his life and tries to get a gauge on what the man seeks out of life, So Kalev, you have landed yourself into a heap of trouble, accompanying us. We have a dangerous job. As Cas mentioned we do things in a certain way. But what is it that you seek? Fame, gold, excitement, there are things that drive men to do what they do, what is your driving force? After a little time chatting with Kalev Malthir seems pretty anxious and impatient to be somewhere and asks several times, Are we there yet?.

Your Humble Narrator

Kesten appears to approve, but as usual he says little.

Kalev leads the group through the forest with amazing certainty. Following trails and signs completely invisible to the rest of the group, he never once seems in doubt about which way to go.

Just as Malthir asks his impatient question, he halts and point up through the branches of a large beech overhanging a quiet stream.

Aye, indeed we are, Paladin. Because if I'm not mistaken, that is the lass we are looking for hiding up there.

After a moment of silence, Kressle's husky voice sounds from the dense foliage. My, my...I must be slipping, or this fellow is part bloodhound. I was not expecting you for at least another half hour. But all for the best. Now we get to enjoy this right away.

The former bandit leader gracefully swings down from her elevated hiding place and tosses Kalev a big bag filled with various goodies from Svetlana's kitchen. Be a good boy and start a fire, so we can eat.

She slips her arm around Casimir and runs her hand up and down his chest. No vital parts missing, I'm pleased to see, she says with a wicked grin, as her hand sweeps low. But I take it this big fellow has passed the test.

Casimir gives her a teasing shove and slumps down to start the eating. Yup, I certainly think so, and I get the impression the rest of our fine company agrees. So where do we go from here? Kressle will return to the Temple of the Elk to continue her duties and the rest of us have some exploring to do.

He pulls out some of the maps and notes the group have made during their travels so far. Kalev, as you can see, we still need to cover a large area here in the woods west of Oleg's, as well as some of the land north of the Shriek river. I say we start here in the area closest to where we are now, and clear that first, before we systematically work our way further south to cover the patches we missed further southeast. Once most of the land is explored, we need to figure out how to deal with a more daunting task - what to do with the Stag Lord and his men.

Fenna agreed to our plan to start west of Oleg's and continue that way until we reach the end of our charter. After that we probably cut south and then back to Oleg's focuing on exploration for a week or so.

After lunch Malthir asks if anyone want to go with him to visit Bokken and Noleski?
Dragging along their new companion, Malthir relates the sad tale to Kalev of the boys injury and his hasty promise to heal the boy. After a couple of hours ride they arrive at Bokken's. The old man immediately reconizes Kalev, Kalev my boy, have those potions of healing I sold you come in handy? Not yet, well maybe that is for the best. Bokken chats for a while outside of his little residence until he can tell the Malthir is about to burst, Well warrior of Iomedae, is there something I can help you with?

Old man, you know why I am here and you appear to be giving us the run-around.

Bokken turns to the inside of the hut, Noleski my boy, come out here there is someone to see you.

Noleski walks out of the hut, wooden sword in his hand and charges Malthir and polks him in the suprised belly. Malthir grabs the boy in a great bear hug, Noleski my little warrior, look at you. I almost don't reconize you, there is no way you could have grown this quickly? How do you feel? I feel great Sir Dagon, I feel like I could swing from the trees!!!

He ideed looks stronger and bigger, much bigger than you last remember him. He is probably the biggest 11 year old you have seen in some time, if not ever.

Malthir turns to Bokken and whispers a silent thank you.
Well little man, keep working on your sword play. I expect you to come to me on your 14th birthday and remember our bargain, if you keep practicing and you listen to you parents we will talk about you becoming my squire. He pouts at Malthir, I am almost 12, can't I start training now?
Let your parents at least see you before you run off to become a great knight won't you little man?

After some more play time, as well as Noleski riding Mal's horse for about an hour you head back to Oleg's to catch dinner and enjoy some more of the Fort's atmosphere and company. You have never seen Malthir so happy as you do now. When he gets back to the Fort he asks Casimir to tell the boy's tale and buys the entire camp a round on him. -10gp.

A mass of shrubbery, vines and undergrowth rears up on two tree-trunk like legs, stinking of freshly turned earth. It swings for Kalev with a limb made of a huge branch and covered in moss, but catches the limb against the trunk of a nearby tree, shaking the tree itself with the force of the blow.

Knowledge (Nature) DC20:

Even mighty warriors have fallen victim to the Shambling Mounds vicious hold, literally ripped into pieces by the mound's constricting and brutal grasp. To eat, the Shambling Mound absorbs organic material into itself.

As you are doing your regular exploration I have assumed your all mounted but not placed your mounts on the battle map unless they become relevant in some way.

Round 1 Initiative-

Where is the plant monster in the initiative count?

I don't like decisions to be taken based on when the monster acts, so I add him to the initiative after he has acted.

Duly noted.

Knowledge (nature) 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (18) + 9 = 27

"Shambling mound...intelligent plant-life...will try to grab and tear you apart...resistant to fire...immune to electricity!"

Yelena moves to space F13 and casts burning hands.

Kalev ponders Malthir's question for a moment, before speaking.

I'm not certain what I seek, to be honest. Glory and fame has no place in the wilds I normally frequent, as long as I have good arms, food in my belly and a tankard of ale, I don't need more gold, and while I like a challenge and new experiences, the Greenbelt holds plenty of both already. I'm not sure what name my goal has...a place to call mine, perhaps? Acceptance? I will tell you if I find it.

Kalev starts a fire with little trouble and joins the eating, listening to their plans. He agrees to the plan of starting close by and working their way south.

After a couple of hours ride they arrive at Bokken's. The old man immediately reconizes Kalev, Kalev my boy, have those potions of healing I sold you come in handy? Not yet, well maybe that is for the best....

Kalev greets the old man with a nod and a smile. Thanks, yes, I got into a fight with a big cat and was glad I had some of your healing salves to dress a wound that might have ended me otherwise.

At the exchange between Malthir and the boy, Kalev smiles. The boy's eagerness to become a warrior and the way he almost worships the older man makes a great impression.

Back at the trading post, Kalev sells his skins (I assume at full value, since I merely had some of my starting funds in skins) and buys a few supplies and new arrows.

Yup, all fine.

Kalev spends a moment getting over the surprising turn of events and guides his horse a few steps back before thrusting his spear full force at the beast.

Knowledge Nature: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21

The following is based on the assumption I'm still able to act on my turn.

5 ft. step to F16, using Ranger's Focus on the Shambling Mound and making a mounted attack with Power Attack.

Guide horse with knees: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15

Attack roll: 1d20 + 6 + 1 + 2 - 1 ⇒ (17) + 6 + 1 + 2 - 1 = 25

Damage: 1d8 + 4 + 2 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 4 + 2 + 3 = 13

I assume all of the terrain off the trail is considered rough terrain? Yikes, that thing has party member killed written all over it. As I said in an earlier post, no encounters for some time and then the Dragon, I mean Shambling mound :)

Fenna, can you summon something to draw its grapple from us and to flank it? Waiting for my turn since I want to know some other peoples position before I make my move/attack

"Spread out!" Fenna says loudly, "The thing's tendrils will be more effective if we group together."

Pulling on the reins of Dandelion to restrain the mighty dog, the ex-prophetess starts an Azlanti chant requesting aid from of one Aroden's celestial servants, "I call upon the loyal mastiff, Derron, war-hound of The Last Azlanti, who held at bay the horde of Belkzen..."

Start to cast summon monster I

Great gods, a Shambler! Don't bunch together - it will strike us two at a time and tear us apart if it gets hold. Keep your distance from it. This may be more than we can handle!

Casimir pulls a fuse grenade from his bandoleer pocket and prepares to light it, as he calls out his magically charged words of comfort to his allies.

Courage, Guardians!

Yes I am thinking run, but of course my character doesn't know that... :) It should make short work of us in about 3 rounds unless we start rolling some 20's.

Don't worry, with those knowledge rolls, I think most of us know that retreat is the best option here - and we will be sure to tell you. Now we just have to get clear of the thing before it gets a hit in. If we let it tie us up in melee, this ends very badly.

Kalev, be sure to read the ride rules for the cover manuever, you may need to do this in order to live, it is something we should have been doing all along and a powerful thing for fighting from horseback. At least you have a chance to do this if it full-out attacks you.

Although the fire fully envelops the Shambling Mound, it doesn't appear to do it any harm.

Fenna begins to summon.

Kalev strikes a fine blow deep into the creature's flesh (added the +1 to damage from IC).

The Shambling Mound takes a step forward, sending one limb at Kalev's horse and another at the Guide. The horse barely remains standing after the blow, but Kalev is struck squarely in the face with a atsonishingly powerful blow, and only remains in the saddle as a legacy from his bestial Orc heritage.

1d20 + 11 ⇒ (7) + 11 = 18VS Horse, Hit.
2d6 + 5 ⇒ (6, 1) + 5 = 12

1d20 + 11 ⇒ (20) + 11 = 31VS Kalev, Crit?
2d6 + 5 ⇒ (1, 3) + 5 = 9

1d20 + 11 ⇒ (14) + 11 = 25Confirmed.
2d6 + 5 ⇒ (2, 5) + 5 = 12

Horse takes 12 damage, Kalev takes 21 damage, but is not yet unconcious due to his half-orc heritage.

Edric had a similar entrance, charged and killed a bandit at Oleg's only to be critted for 27 damage by Happs himself on one of the first attack rolls against the group... I think Fenna's done best for not being taken to negatives so far.
