Ignoring Ragnar (and ignoring Luois' payment error and simple request of food), the Zor answers your questions as best he is able, She is frequently in the company of two of her friends, Stefan Rowick and Rahaiel Kakulska. She slummed with the two, neither of which are nobility but were both from wealthy families of guild artisans. They frequented a cafe called the Wicked Tart, across from the High House of Hurting, the temple of Loviatar. You may want to check the cafe.

In the past, she has dabbled in various fads, including gambling, strange religions, and various intoxicants. Of you know of any of these, you may want to check them out. Ask around.

If you're worried about danger, then I suggest you do not do anything to run afoul of the law or any nobility. If you're caught, I will disavow any knowledge. This is sensitive, and it cannot be known that she is missing. Due to such, you cannot seek help from The Cloaks, The Hawks, or the City Watch. You're on your own, and you must bring her back to me safely by any means necessary.

During the walk Louis introduced himself to everyone with a warm smile and a friendly handshake. "Louis." He said confidently. "Louis the Low-noise, they call me."

He seemed perfectly happy to get caught up in the circumstances and he might come across like the kind of guy who's used to just going with the flow and living in the moment.

"You all seem to know each other?"

By the end of the meeting with Zor Garwyl Gos, the party is dying down. It's now late in the night, and few, if any, of the locales you'd like to visit are open.

Please spent the appropriate amount of lodging for the night:

Inn stay (per day)
Squalid 7 cp
Poor 1 sp
Modest 5 sp
Comfortable 8 sp
Wealthy 2 gp
Aristocratic 4 gp

The amount you spent will not alter your lifestyle, it is purely a roleplaying choice.

The next day...

This section of the adventure is about gathering information. You can seek out specific locales, such as visiting the Wicked Tart as you are now, or you can ask people around town for information on specific individuals or topics.

Each Locale and topic takes approximately an hour and will cost you 1d6 GP in bribes and a Charisma (Persuasion) check. +10 GP will give you +5 to your check. Some backgrounds will give advantage to some topics or locales. This section is a great time to use your inspiration; everyone should have it.

The Wicked Tart is a small cafe across from the High House of Hurting. It has a few tables inside, but most of its seating is outside.

From a distance, it is clear that the Wicked Tart is popular with the young, the wealthy, and the avant-garde. Small tables are spread over an outdoor terrace underneath a large sign that depicts a scantily clad blonde woman holding a tray with a tart upon it in one hand and a cat-o-nine-tails behind her back with the other hand. There are several young nobles and other rich customers lounging here in the mid morning sun, drinking coffee and discussing the topic de jour.

As you approach, a human woman in an apron appraises you disapprovingly. The waitress, Heila, speaks up, What do you want? Her manner and tone are uncharacteristic of a waitress; she's clearly being rude. Any looks of being irked or comments on her rudeness are met with some chuckles from the crowd - apparently the rudeness of the staff is part of the unique charm of this place, and the young nobles are being entertained by your ignorance of it. Drinks are 3-5 gold each, meals are 8-10 gold. Sit anywhere. Pay up front. And stop wasting my time.

There's no checks for the waitress, but if you offer 5 gp and promise to leave without causing trouble, she'll tell you everything she knows about the topic you're interested in.

Paying 5 GP:
- She was working two tendays ago when Elred, Orym, Ayre, and Liticia Gos dined here with a bald man in yellow robes.

- Liticia spoke of something called the Yellow Breath, but Heila didn't really hear all of it. As usual, it was a busy day.

- After they paid for their meals, she heard Elred and Orym say they were going to travel with Liticia and the bald man, but Ayre said she would join them later after making a stop at the smoke shop.

- Heila assumes Ayre meant Usilie Rostik's Smoke Shoppe. Ayre was known at the Wicked Tart for smoking a pipe of foul smelling tabac while dining and Rostik's has the most expensive herbs and tabac in the city.

Clyde shakes Louis' hand. "Of course! Sorry, I kinda got caught up in the moment there. It's a pleasure to meet you. My make is Clyde. We've all traveled together before. It was... much less pleasant than this time..." Clyde turns to Yarroth and extends a hand. "Except for you. Heya, name's Clyde."

I'll be spending 5sp on a room.

When addressed rudely by the waitress and not knowing how to handle the situation, Clyde shrinks back attempting to make himself look smaller. "N-nothing for me, please. Thank you."

When the waitress leaves, Clyde pulls a daily ration out of his bag and offers one to anyone that would like one rather than deal with the waitress.

"Listen babe," Louis said as he walked up to the waitress. "Here's five gold. It's for you if you help out my friends here with some inquiries." He slaps the coins he lifted during the party on the counter and adds one of his own. He motions to his companions.
"Believe me, it's going to be the fastest way to get us out of here as soon as possible."

Spends 5 gold

After gaining the information Louis addresses the group. "Well, I'll be going to check out the Smoke Shoppe tomorrow. I could do with a fresh batch of chillie-greenleaf anyways. Anybody want to follow along? If there's more leads to be had we might want to split up and meet back here after gathering information?"

If they settle on some sort of plan, Louis will retire for the night directly after having tried to get two ladies at the bar to follow him up and failing miserably. This didn't seem to have dampened his spirits one bit though, waving everyone goodnight smiling.

Sir Adrian prefers the wealthy lifestyle choice of course, and he will pay the 5gp to the waitress for the information.

Well now, that is very interesting.

The next day, Sir Adrian works the locals at the smoke shop, greasing their palms for as much information as possible.

Persuasion: 1d20 + 5 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 + 5 = 20

We are looking for Ayre, someone who frequents this shoppe, but more particularly, her friend, Leticia.

That figures to 2gp+2gp+5gp+10gp=19gp removed from profile

Louis - note that it's morning when you visit the cafe. Waiting for the next day to visit the smoke shop will mean you won't be involved in anything for the rest of Day 2. Would you like to declare a different action?

Adrian - what locale or what information are you trying to bribe for? Nevermind. I caught you in the middle of an edit. :)

The following background features give advantage for this section's Charisma checks:

City Secrets (all)
Guild Membership or Position of Privilege (dealing with nobles only)
Rustic Hospitality (concerning questions about Silkroot or Yellow Breath)
Criminal Contacts (concerning questions about Silkroot)

Clyde, your background feature gives you a place to sleep for free; it could also allow some of your friends to sleep for free, too.

Walking around the cafe, you see two young humans sitting near a bubbling fountain, giggling and gossiping over a table filled with sweet tarts and tea. A fluffy white cat with colorful wings is perched in the center of the table, eating one of the tarts off of one of their plates.

They're happy to gossip with you, but refuse your gold.

- Liticia was always trying out the next new fad. Mostly she did it to anger her older brother Garwyl. He's a solemn twit. Always trying to tell Liticia how to live. Not at all like her other brother Andik. He always knew how to live... at least until the scandal.

- About a month ago she got interested in something called the Yellow Breath. Frankly it was too mystical and strange for the Stefan and Rahaiel, but they assume that she was really into it for Thylius Caramitru. He's so handsome. (You get the exact address of the Caramitru home.)

- Rumors are that all of the Caramitru family has mental powers, or at least that's how Lord Julios always knows when someone's hiding money from his tax collectors.

- The Yellow Breath devotees practice meditation, breath control, fasting and some basic exercises. Who would ever fast? Going without food? That's for the poor!

- Did you hear about Evna Smeethe? She was an early convert to the Yellow Breath. Also the best at finding the latest fashion! She was really into that whole meditation thing, but she thought monk's robes would be in next season. Sadly she's dead now. I heard she tried to prove that she could hold her breath longer than her father could yell at her. No one can yell longer than her father!

- Her previous fad was buying various herbs from Usilie Rostik's Smoke Shoppe. That was a fun whim, at least while it was still in fashion. Sadly that was so last Mirtul.

They may have further information depending on your questions. The time is now 11 am

Hmmm that's the second time the smoke shoppe has been mentioned. I wonder if they're promoting for this Yellow Breath rubbish.

Clyde cradles his cheeks in his hands and rests his elbows on the table in an attempt to look 'gossipy', but clearly has gone way too overboard. "Out of sheer curiosity, who would you say is the least popular noble? Someone who's no fun or has terrible fashion sense?"

After he gets his answer, he'll excuse himself from their table.

"Thank you ladies(?). You've been most helpful." Clyde does his best to bow. "Also, your... Cat? ..is adorable." With that, Clyde takes his leave of their table.

Knowing Louis had mentioned the smoke shoppe, Clyde will seek him out and ask a favor. "Louis, when you visit the smoke shoppe, could you see if they're advertising for a practice known as the Yellow Breath?. Be subtle about it. I have a suspicion this runs deeper than we think."

Turning to the whole party, "I'm going to investigate this Thylius gentleman. We should meet back up here tonight. Does 1600 hours sound agreeable?"

Yarroth gets a room with the other (5sp) and follows up when they go to the smoke shop and cafe.

Looks like the party is splitting up. Please use spoiler tags and respond the the area you go towards. If you want to go somewhere else, let me know.

The Smoke Shop:
Usilie Rostik's Smoke Shoppe is located half way between the Gate of Good Fortune (temple of Tymora and casino) and the House Built on Gold (temple of Waukeen and bank), in full view of the Tower of Blades. It is open from eight bells in the morning to six bells in the evening, but is otherwise closed.

A large wooden silhouette of a pipe with smoke rising from the bowl hangs over the door. Clearly profitable, large glass windows allow you to seen inside where jars of incense, tabac, pipeweed, matches and other wares are displayed. Behind the counter is bulky man of Rashemi descent with a full black beard and thinning hair, sucking on a pipe. Towards the back of the store, just before a walk-in humidor, three men and woman sit at a table drinking from small cups and passing a hookah between them.

The proprietor is behind the counter when you arrive. Welcome, ladies and gentlemen. If there's anything I can assist you with, please let me know.

He keeps a particular eye on anyone who looks shady, e.g. those who are not obviously rich.

The cheapest thing in the store is some Chilean coffee for 5 gp.

Louis, what are you inquiring about?

To Adrian, the shop keeper says. Ayre? Yes, Ayre was also a customer here. Though often she came to socialize with the Theorists. He gestures to the group arguing in the back. No, Liticia nor her friends ever shopped here.

DC 15 Wisdom (Insight): He's lying that Liticia has never been here. Can't put a spoiler tag within a spoiler.

Adrian, I'm also going to use this to inquire about Ayre. You learn the following about her:

- Zora Ayre Affapanov is the daughter of Lord Serge Affapanov whose wife passed two years ago. He deals in gemstones from Damara and the Bloodstone Lands. He is currently not in the city. (The character gets the exact address of the Affapanov home.)

- Rumor says that Lord Affapanov is likely to become one of the Blades the next time a spot opens up on the council. He has been working hard for it, spending money and collecting favors. He is a very powerful man.

- Ayre is missing. She was last seen dining at the Wicked Tart in the company of several other noble scions: Elred Korsinchev, Orym Illustriana, and Liticia Gos.

==================================

The Theorists.

Sitting in the back are a group of intellectuals, having an argument as they drink strong Chultan coffee and smoke imported tabac through a water pipe. They are currently discussing whether the acceptance of the Phlan refugees into the city is repeating the mistake of admitting the Zhent refugees a century ago, or does this mark a resurgence of philanthropy and public works along with a fresh work force.

Thibauld, Eugone, Archill and Lucianne (male, male, male and female humans) are all frequent lay-abouts, living off the wealth of their friends while arrogantly arguing philosophy, literature, art and politics. They are consummate intellectual hedonists who have no true guiding principle.

Speaking with the Theorists is like stepping into a dueling ring. They pounce on any misstep and live to prove they are smarter than anyone they encounter. The fastest way to blunt them however is to buy them another round of coffee, tabac, or other products from the store.

To gain anything useful from The Theorists, you must do one of the following: pass a DC 10 Intelligence (History) check, pass a DC 15 Charisma (Persuasion) check, or pay 20 GP in tobbacco and coffee products to notice them to keep speaking.

If you want to do anything else in the store, such as investigating the lie (if you made your insight check), inquiring about other topics, or searching the place for something you're interesting in, please let me know.

Thylius Caramitru:

Those going to visit the home of Thylius Caramitru's family must head towards Southroad Keep and the seat of the city bureaucracy.

The area around Southroad Keep is dominated by the city government. The serious and well-dressed flood the streets between institutional buildings, courts, banks, and nice but functional homes for the functionaries that make the city run. Set back from the road by a high fence, one house is slightly larger than the others. Its dark colors make it look almost foreboding.

Arriving at the entrance to Southroad Keep (the business district where Thylius lives), the guard demands to know your business. Only those with legitimate business will be let in.

[Ooc]A vague hint has already been posted, but if you are unable to come up with a good reason, you may have to ask around town for more information on specific individuals. Remember, your investigation must be kept secret.

Smoke Shop:
Sir Adrian smirks at the proprietor as he makes a show of walking to the location of the Theorists. He casually sits amongst them, and he motions his retainers to just outside the door of the shop.

Come Louis, my friend, sit a bit with us.

He pulls out 20GP and lays it on the table. He turns back to the proprietor.

Another round of coffee and tabac for the group, good sir.

He focuses on each and every theorist, making eye contact.

I am Sir Adrian Fullbright, and I am desperately seeking Ayre and Liticia. Now, the fine proprietor of this establishment is convinced that Liticia has never been here, but I know that to a falsehood. It matters not to me, I just need to find her. It is a matter of the heart, you see. I hear told that she may have last been seen at the Wicked Tart, but I had absolutely the worst luck there trying to find her. Have you seen her, or possibly know where she may be hiding? It does so pull at my heartstrings to be the victim of unrequited love.

Louis has nothing to ask the shopkeeper for now. Insight check to spot the lie: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3 (He'll ignore it for now, should he spot it.)

Louis saunters over towards Sir Adrian and the theorists and sits down. While he quips a joke about the Zenth refugees reminding him more of the staff at the Wicked Tart than of the current situation in Phlan.
Intelligence check for a current political joke while also displaying he's in the know of the hip places to be and their curiosities: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7

He doesnt directly make eye contact, but rather sort of covertly nods once in greeting to acknowledge their presence. He casually takes out his own pipe and casts mage hand to hold it aloft while he seaches his pockets for his bundle of tobacco. He stuffs it absent-mindedly and lights it while reinforcing Sir Adrian's deception.

"I hope you find her, my friend. Pains me to see you brought so low."

He takes out his harmonica and as the smoke drifts around him he starts singing a low tune, not too loud or obnoxious but just the right tone to convey a feeling of melancholy to these upstarts. Something they might be able to connect to.

"Oh pretty woman what you trying to do
You kept on foolin' around till I got stuck on you
So you just drop that mess and come down off your throne
Stop using my poor heart as a stepping stone
Pretty woman
What's the matter with you
Can't make you love me, no matter what I do"

He takes another toke of his pipe as he tries not to take too much attention away from Sir Adrian, keeping him in the spotlight while reinforcing his 'cool'.

Smoke Shop:
Adrian's flowing money helps loosen the lips of the Theorists, and you learn the following:

- Ayre and her friends Elred and Orym were members of the Theorists. An unofficial club that met regularly at the Shop to discuss philosophy, literature, art and politics. Truthfully they were all a little naive, but were at least willing to pick up the tab to make up for their intellectual weaknesses.

- Ayre was friends with Liticia Gos and through her Thylius Caramitru. Liticia is a vapid girl who latches onto a new trend every few weeks in a desperate attempt to appear relevant. Thylius Caramitru however is different; very smart and incredibly charismatic, to the point of being dangerous. The weak-willed hang on his every word and are willing to do just about anything to please him. Indeed, he has the magnetism of old High Blade Selfaril Uoumdolphin, with twice the ruthlessness. If he had been born to a better family he might even have taken the High Blade seat for himself some day.

- Thylius has bought a property somewhere in the city where he is teaching some new fad called the Yellow Breath. Hokum from some monastery; a palliative for the masses. They do not know where it is, but Usilie surely does. He keeps the address for all his deliveries in a book under the counter.

When Shoo asks about special products, the shop owners replies, I know nothing of Silkroot, and even if I did you should steer clear away from it. It is clear he's lying, as the topic of Silkroot never even came up.

A successful DC 10 Wisdom (Insight) lets you notice that Lucianne looks toward the walk-in humidor when Shoo asks about special products.

After the conversation, the sop owner gets out from behind the counter terrorism and wanders about the store, obviously trying to keep an eye and ear on the Theorists and those conversing with them.

Thylius:
The guards let you into the district. You make your way to the Caramitru Estate and ring the bell. A servant informs you that master Thylius is not in, but his mother is present.

DC 10 Charisma (Persuasion or Deception) check will grant you an audience. Those with noble backgrounds or have the wealthy or higher lifestyle have advantage.

Who is where? I have Adrian, Louis, and Shoo at the smoke house. Clyde at Thylius' Estate. Where are Ember, Ragnar, and Yarroth?

No worries, Shoo! I post from my smartphone, too, so I understand.

Sir Adrian listens intently at all the Theorists have to say, and he casually stands and stretches, winking at Shoo, as he approaches the shop owner. He leans in close to him to speak quietly to the shopkeep.

So, two things are of interest, good sir. I need the address for Thylius' new property where he teaches the Yellow Breath. I know for certain you have your deliveries marked in a ledger behind the counter, as all good shopkeepers must. Also, that humidor interests me. See, I have no inclination to dabble in Silkroot, but I know you pander it here out of this shop - likely in that humidor. So, what I need is the name of your source. If I do not receive it, I will bring down some very influential people upon your ears. Of course, I would not expect to get these two pieces of information for free. So, take this as an offering of my future silence as to the source of my information.

He offers the shopkeeper 25GP.

Smoke Shop:
Oops, I noticed my phone interjected some words in my last post, likely leading to some confusion.

Here's the situation:

Adrian and Louis are in the back corner of the shop at a table with the Theorists. The shop keeper is also back that way, trying and failing to be inconspicuous as he keeps an eye on Louis and the Theorists. He doesn't keep an eye on Shoo or Adrian.

The counter and the humidor are both out of his direct eyesight, and either Shoo or Adrian can go investigate discretely if you like. Alternatively, I'd you keep the shop keeper busy, Louis can go sneak and investigate.

However, directly confronting a drug dealer without evidence will not yield good results, and offering gold will not be enough to convince someone to give you the evidence that will get them arrested or killed.

I'm allowing a redo of actions because I made an error in my last post, leading to confusion of the situation.

Thylius' Estate:
Yes, please come on in and have a seat in the drawing room. I will tell Zora Caramitru you are here.

The inside of the manor is fine, but austere. Money has not been wasted on ostentatious decoration, but the furniture and accents present are of the finest quality. The servant leads you to a receiving room where, soon, an older human woman in a highnecked black gown greets you. Her grey hair is done up in a bun and she is unadorned with any jewelry. She considers you with a stern look, accentuating her deep frown lines, I do not recall an appointment. Why have you arrived at my door?

Smoke Shop Re-Do:
Adrian leans over towards Louis and whispers to him.

Check behind the counter at the ledger book and try to get the address of Thylius' new property. That may be where they are keeping our quarry held up.

Adrian nods at Shoo, then rises to stretch, and nonchalantly heads over to the humidor. He looks around inside, trying to determine if he can see anything related to the Silkroot trade.

The shop:

Behind the Counter:
Under the counter is a small book in which Usilie has written all of his deliveries and the locations for each. There are deliveries marked for both Ayre and Thylius. The delivery for Ayre is labeled "special incense." The deliveries for Thylius are most regular incenses, spices, tabac, matches, and perfumes, but there are a number of herbs as well.

A successful DC 10 Intelligence (Nature) or Wisdom (Medicine) check notes that they are often used in making drugs to sedate patients. The address for both deliveries is the same the Chapter House.

In the Humidor:
A DC 15 Intelligence (Investigation) check reveals a secret compartment in the humidor behind a bin of cigars. Usilie's stock of Silkroot is concealed within, wrapped in oilcloth.

Adrian, your first roll before the re-do was a 15. I'll count that as a success for this. You shouldn't be punished with a bad roll for my error.

Smoke Shop:
Well, look at this Shoo. It appears our friend is in the Silkroot trade.

Sir Adrian sticks his head out of the humidor and calls over the shopkeep, while leaving the evidence exposed.

A few questions please, good sir.

When he re-enters, he draws his greatsword and leans upon it.

Shoo, when he comes in, block the door so he cannot leave.

Hopefully, this will give Louis the time he needs...

When the shopkeep enters, Adrian, leaning on his drawn greatsword, points to the exposed stash.

Well now, Silkroot would never be sold out of your shop, right? I can leave you to your business, if you simply give up the source of the product. If not, then I am sure that you will suffer some difficulties in the flow of your highly addictive goods, fine sir. What say you?

Louis happily ducks behind the counter when noone is looking, using his small stature to disappear from sight.

Before touching anything he gives it a good once-over to check for any type of trap. It wouldn't be the first time he got burned by some paranoid storekeep.
If everything seems on the up-and-up he skims it and dunks the ledger in his backpack, he then proceeds to inspect the rest of the contents behind the counter. If theres anything of value, or some good cigars.. Louis will pilfer the place.

Clyde bows at the waist, a little more fluidly this time.

Hey, I think I'm starting to get the hang of this.

"My apologies, Madame. I assure you it's a matter of great import. Have you heard of the Yellow Breath?"

The shop keeper at first tries to deny that any of the stuff is his, and then tries to shift blame onto Thylius. But Adrian's relentlessness combined with the evidence gathered by the Adrian, Shoo, and Louos eventually gets him to relent.

So you are more of Thylius' disreputable acquaintances. Does he owe you coin? Or are you one of his silly followers? Thylius Residence:
Clyde lets out a sigh of relief. "Actually, it's quite the opposite, ma'am. We're investigating the cult. We believe your son may be in danger. The Yellow Breath practice a dangerous ritual of starvation that has already claimed the life of a few of its followers. What's more, people have started disappearing. Even someone close to your son. Are you familiar with a young woman named Lilica?"

Thylius Home:
She barks a laugh at the thought of Thylius being in trouble.

Son, My boy is often in trouble and more than often the cause of it.

Throughout the rest of the conversation, you learn the following:

- Thylius is often in trouble, relying on his charm and his father's coin to get him out of it. He does not appreciate the hard work that should be required of him; always looking for a short cut.

- Thylius recently undertook on a pilgrimage to visit the monks of Ilmater in the Monastery of the Yellow Rose. Truthfully, she suspects he needed to leave the city for awhile after having antagonized some of the City Watch with one of his wild parties. She does not know the entire story.

- Thylius returned a little over a month ago in the company of a monk named Ovon who stayed at the Caramitru mansion for few days. The two of them later moved to a property that Thylius had purchased before beginning his trip.

- The monk seemed quite enthusiastic to visit Mulmaster. Though Zora Korana thinks he may have been simple in the head. He was always smelling everything. One evening she saw him meditating on the roof of the manor, his legs folded above him as he balanced on one arm. She believes he was holding his breath the entire time.

- Korana gives you the address of the property Thylius purchased. It's a bit out of the way, on the edge of the city. It is likely that Thylius and Ovon can be found there.

These two events both took place in the same hour. The time is now noon on Day 2.

Assuming that we can meet up with the rest of the party after both complete their individual investigations back at where we are all staying. If not, then I would suggest a trip to Thylius' new digs in hopes the others will be led there, as well.

After nodding to the shopkeep, Sir Adrian sheathes his Greatsword and motions to Shoo.

Come, my friend, I believe we have gotten every bit of information we needed from this establishment and its denizens.

Walking quickly out, Sir Adrian heads back to Mulmaster's Inn, hopefully picking up Louis and Shoo on the way.

Once the party is together...

I believe Shoo, Lois, and I have discovered the location of the newly purchased haunt of Thylius where he practices the Yellow Breath. This may be where they are hiding Liticia Gos. I recommend we head over there to investigate further.

As Adrian and Shoo walk into the place they were staying they are met by a satisfied smiling Louis. He is in the midst of carefully compressing the tobacco so that it can be easily rolled but still has enough air to fully smoulder and let the taste seep into the smoke.
No pipe this time, he rolls his tobacco in thin paper and expertly licks a corner of it just before he flicks it shut in elegant move.

The strike of a match follows, and a long deep inhale that seems to completely relax him before a fat and rich smoke billows out of his nose and mouth.

The satisfaction on his face turns to bliss, and his smile widens. He greets the two with the gesture of his other hand.

"Friends! I saved you a seat. Come sit and have a drink with me. We can get to know each other before the others come back. Have a smoke!"
