GM Kip |
The Lizardman is silent for a second after Rakish speaks, then with a splash, he turns and starts swimming away at speed!
You can attack or try to stop the lizardfolk scout some other way.
Draco : 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
Glenda : 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21
Krissina : 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Lizardfolk Scouts: 1d20 ⇒ 2
Rakish : 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
Ravvek : 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16
Seraphyna : 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13
Won Hung : 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
Everyone gets to act before the scout, so as he turns and starts swimming away.
He's roughly 25ft away from the boat. Just outside the bright light of Draco's spell, so disadvantage on attack rolls for people without Darkvision.
Rakish |
Rakish losses the arrow. Do not let him escape.
Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
Having missed, he immediately draws another arrow and fires (action surge).
Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21
Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
Seraphyna Bell |
Sera kept quiet while Rakish tried to negotiate, hoping lizardman to lizardman would have better results. When the foe turns to flee, pink sand begins to flow from her hands, and with a clap, she causes an explosion of the grains around the fleeing lizard.
Sleep: 5d8 ⇒ (2, 2, 5, 4, 4) = 17
Well that's a bit disappointing....
Glenda Huckleberry |
"Um... you sure this is all right?" Glenda says.
She flings Fynn at the lizardman, but the fish just slaps the water before flying back to her hands.
Ray of Frost: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7
Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 6
Ravvek the Avenger |
Longbow: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
Disadvantage: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25
Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
Awww, that hurts... :(

Sera 13
Draco 9
Rakish 7
Hung 6
Krissina 3
Lizardfolk scouts 2
Glenda Disadvantage : 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19
Glenda flings Finn at the Lizardfolk scout as he turns to swim but the fish slaps against only water before returning to the halfling.
Ravvek lets his arrow fly but his aim is thrown off by Draco's spell.
Sera casts her spell, pink sand bursting over the lizardfolk scout, his head droops but then he shakes it off and prepares to keep swimming!
Dex save vs Draco : 1d20 ⇒ 2
Burning golden flames decend on the scout searing his scaly skin and boiling the water around him!
Rakish (dimlight) disadvantage : 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
Rakish (dimlight) disadvantage : 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21
Rakish fires two arrows in quick succession the first hits the water harmlessly but the second strikes his target in the shoulder!
Hung grips the side of the boat unsure of how he can stop the scout from getting away!
Krissina snatches up her crossbow, her eyes able to pick out the scout with ease she fires a bolt straight into the Lizardfolk side!
Wounded and burnt the scout takes a deep breath and dives below the surface swimming away at speed, leaving a wake behind!
Takes the dash action
The lizardfolk scout is below the surface now, 85ft away in through the darkness and rain. Without giving chase it will be impossible to target him specifically,
To give chase piloting the boat make a DC15 (Dex or Str) watercraft piloting check, if two or more people work together, the person with the highest bonus can make the check with advantage. With the pilot/s taking the dash action and making a successful check the boat can be moved 50ft
characters wishing to delay until the boat moved will need to take readied actions. Ranged attack with projectile weapons like bows and crossbows will still be at Disadvantage due to dimlight, rain and the target being underwater.

"I don't know much about the boats but we can't let that scaly skin one get away!" Glenda says.
Piloting: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
Ravvek the Avenger |
Ravvek looks quickly to see if someone else is going to help Glenda row, then decides to set his bow down and take up the other oar!
Dex (piloting): 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11
:(
Krissina |
Guessing best we can gain is advantage, so unless anyone has better bonus than +3...
If anyone wants to wait until past my initiative to take a shot or pilot check, I can grant bardic inspiration (d6)
Krissina squints and tries to take a final shot before the creature gets out of range Attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 91d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15 dmg: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Seraphyna Bell |
Sera grumbles as the lizardman shakes off her sleep, but strikes her magical girl pose, determined not to let it escape and warn his companions. Lining up a shot with the best of her abilities, she waits until she has a shot before firing off one of her pinkish power projectiles.
Pew Pew: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 171d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 241d10 ⇒ 7
Ravvek the Avenger |
Next round, I will take advantage for working with Glenda. Then perhaps I can benefit from Krissina's bardic inspiration. :)
GM Kip |
FYI, I have darkvision, so I wouldn't have had disadvantage.
Do you have a magic item that grants DV? I'm not seeing it in the Lizardfolk MM stat block or in the racial features in Volo?
How many can help with the boat?
Everybody could help, but as soon as one person does the "main person" gets advantage. So there isn't a benefit of more than one person helping.
Woh up!!
Giving everyone disadvantage on their attack rolls seems to have been overkill...
looking up the rules the dim light only gives disadvantage on perception checks. Total darkness gives the blinded condition which gives disadvantage on attack rolls... Sorry folks.
Looking back on the past round and taking everyone's first attack rolls, there isn't a difference to hits and misses anyhow.
Glenda and Ravvek struggle with the poles, trying to get the boat moving in the right direction they manage to get it to move about 25ft in the right direction...
Seeing a flash of scales through the darkness and rain, Krissina takes a shot with her crossbow, but cant tell if she hit or missed...
Sera strikes a pose and shoots a crackling pink bolt of energy that arcs down into the water striking the lizardfolk scout and outlining his form in the murky water. His body jerks violently and then falls still, floating on the surface!
Glenda Huckleberry |
"Oh dear..." Glenda says. "I guess that stopped him.." she says. She tries to pole the boat towards the corpse of the lizardfolk.
Rakish |
Rakish wrote:FYI, I have darkvision, so I wouldn't have had disadvantage.Do you have a magic item that grants DV? I'm not seeing it in the Lizardfolk MM stat block or in the racial features in Volo?
Whoops! You're totally right. I must have accidentally left it there when I copied over the character sheet template for the profile. Well, time to audit my sheet and ensure there's nothing else wrong.
Ravvek the Avenger |
Ravvek quickly begins falling into rhythm with Glenda and begins moving the boat toward the body.
Dex (water vehicle): 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
Advantage: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11
GM Kip |
Glenda and Ravvek manage to steer the boat slowly over to the floating body.
You pull the body into the boat and find the lizardfolk was equipped with a net, a heavy wooden club and a spiked shield made from wood and bones. He also has a wooden blowgun and five small darts carefully stowed in a leather pouch and likely poisoned...
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19
You notice another scout retreating slowly and carefully to the north west
Glenda Huckleberry |
Glenda pulls the body to the boat and takes out the net, club and spike shield that it wields, as well as a blowgun and darts.
"Guess he was ready for a long fight..." she says.
Perception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7

Rakish |
Perception; dis: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 61d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14
Do not bother. They will not hesitate to kill us for this feast, Rakish surmises.
Ravvek the Avenger |
Ravvek grunts in frustration as he works the oars.
Wisdom (Perception): 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14
Disadvantage: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
So where to now?
GM Kip |
Going to move on to the next 'scene'
1d20 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 1 = 14
1d20 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9
The staccato beat of drums echo all around, now from this way and then from that... each burst is 'answered' by a burst from further south. With no other indication of where the group should head they continue to move further towards the centre of the marsh and the loudest drum beats.
The rain continues to pour down and everyone is thouroughly drenched as Draco Ravvek and Glenda move it through an area thick with tall, wide, and dense blades of greenish brown grass bordering the labyrinthine waterways. The wall-like growths make it appear as though the boat is traveling watery hallways. Crossings occur frequently, opening suddenly to one or both sides. A slow current guides your way.
Standing on the boat, characters six feet in height can barely see over the tops of the grasses, which wave and rustle in a strong, breeze. The plants are growing in the shallower areas, and the channels you are using are only a few feet deep.
Rakish notices two massive toads lurking in the reeds on either side. He gives a quick warning as one hops forward shooting out a long tongue straight at Sera!!
With Rakish's timely warning everyone has a chance to react!

Glenda Huckleberry |
"TOADS! Hmm... they're huge. How would they taste stuffed with garlic and onions and slowly roasted... would they taste like pig or chicken..." Glenda says.
She takes out Fynn and hurls it at the nearest toad. It stops in front of the toad and slaps three times in rapid succession. It then flies back to her hand.
Magic Missile: 3d4 + 3 ⇒ (4, 2, 3) + 3 = 12
Rakish |

They bring the taste of chicken with the texture of squid.
Rakish leaps out of the boat and goes for one of the toads, drawing his axes at the same time. I assume they're within 30 feet.
Attack 1: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8

Attack 2: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17

It's nearly lunch time for me, I'm really hungry, and frog legs sounds really good right now. But the only place I know that serves them, it takes longer to get there than I have for my lunch break. :(
Seraphyna Bell |
At Rakish's warning, Sera looks towards the toads, noticing its beady eyes focused hungrily on her. A variety of emotions flash across her, from fear, to anger, to curiousity. She unleashes her pew pew posing, firing off a blast of eldritch energies, before popping her finger in her mount, Nope, don't taste like candy.
Pew pew: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 221d10 ⇒ 2
Ravvek the Avenger |
Ravvek stands up and draws his shield and slim longblade, readying a strike at the first toad that comes into range.
Readied Rapier strike: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15
Damage (dueling): 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
Glenda Huckleberry |
Forgot my wild magic roll after casting magic missile...
Wild magic: 1d20 ⇒ 18
Nothing this time!
GM Kip |
Flynn flashes out from Glenda's hand slapping the toad furiously, its wide head snapping back and forth!
With a click and twang, Krissina sends a crossbow bolt flashing through the reeds, and past the toad about a foot to its left...
Rakish keeps from the boat and slashes at the toad with his axes, the first flashes past as the toad jumps to the right, but the second cuts deep into the creatures bloated green body!
Sera strikes her pose and sends pink energy careening off its shoulder, leaving a nasty burn!
Ravvek draws his sword facing off against the toad on the left, ready to strike if it shoul;d approach!
Dex Save: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2 Well... that's not going to do it...
Suddenly golden flames roar up in front of Rakish, catching the toad fully burning and scaring it's green skin!
The toad leaps away as quick as it can! Leaving itself open to an attack from Rakish!
This toad is taking the dash action, Rakish can take an AoO
On the other side of the boat the toad on the left leaps forward sending it's tongue towards Ravvek! Ravvek stabs at the toad piercing it's side, but only shallowly. The toad attacks, opening its maw wide!
Left Toad VS Ravvek : 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14

Damage (Dueling): 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13

Glenda Huckleberry |
"Shoo! Go away! Be grateful I'm not making a stew with you!" Glenda says. She tosses Fynn at the toad attacking Ravvek.
Ray of Frost: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17

The fish whacks the toad but doesn't do much against the toad's rubbery skin, before flying back to Glenda's hands.
"EWWW.... YOU'RE ICKY!" she says.
Rakish |
Rakish OA: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 221d8 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Rakish turns his focus on the other toad, crossing the water to get to him.
Rakish has a swim speed, so if he can get to the toad this round, use the following. Otherwise, ignore.
A2: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 201d8 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
GM Kip |
Rakish cuts deep in the toad as it flees, it still manages to hop quickly away, but leaves a trail of blood as it does so!
Glenda sends Finn flying at the other toad, the fish slaps at the toad, which shudders as a chill runs through its bones, leaving an ice burn on its slimy skin
Krissina leaps forward drawing her rapier and sends a quick cut at the toad, but not quick enough to catch it...
Rakish turns his attention to the other toad, diving under the boat and flashing up onto the other bank near Ravvek! He slashes with his axes and gives the toad two deep cuts!
Sera fires off another blast that scorches the toads head as it passes by!
That's a hit.
Ravvek thrusts his rapier deep into the toads belly, blood pumps out from the wound as the toad sways and lets out a weak croak.
Finally as Draco chants another pillar of golden flames roars up around this toad, scorching and burning it's flesh! When the flames subside a second later, the toad lies still, burnt to a crisp!
Dex save : 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
With the toad defeated, a quick search of the imediate area reveals the skeletal remains of a few less fortunate folk, their ruined weapons and packs and a few coin purses!
Glenda Huckleberry |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Glenda picks up the remnants of the toad. "Well.. looks crispy enough... but even I wouldn't eat it right now. Maybe one day when I have enough to open my restaurant I'll get a few tadpoles and make it a specialty," she says, letting it drop into the water.
Glenda will help retrieve the belongings of the skeletons, and says a prayer to the halfling god Sheela to guide their souls to the afterlife.
Krissina |
"I'm no druid, but does it seem odd these creatures would attack a boat? Do lizardfolk keep toads as watchdogs?" Krissina directs this last question at Rakish, on the chance he knows something...
Ravvek the Avenger |
Ravvek would ignore the coin purses and ask Rakish, Which way?
Of course, I am hoping that someone else scavenges the treasure! ;)
