Night Below - 5th Edition Forgotten Realms
Estimated Players Wanted: 6-8

Night Below. Yes, you read that right. I am planning on running this massive 2nd Edition campaign from start to finish under the 5th Edition ruleset. I will be putting up detailed information in the game forum, but for those who want some details prior to signing up:

1. Characters start at 1st level.
2. Haranshire is southwest of Waterdeep, and west of Westgate.
3. 5th Edition Forgotten Realms is the setting.

And just to be clear: Night Below is going to be the primary campaign, but don't be shocked if there are other side-treks that take you in and out of Haranshire. You may start and end with this campaign, but it's not going to be as linear as most people make it out to be.

If you're interested, sign up. If not...well, then, at least I hope you'll read along with us!

Game Description:

Hark! You there! Yes - you. You seem to be a strapping young adventuring type, with your armor and weapons all dangling about your person. Are you interested in exploring new realms, fighting evil beasts, and above all else, making some coin? If so, then come in and listen.

My master, the respectable DM Asmodeus, is...what's that? You never heard of him? Why you little...

All right, so he's not well-known in these parts. In fact, he's rather new 'round here. But that don't take away from the fact that he's famous elsewhere, and that he's got a great head on him. Excellent guy, if you ask me. But I am starting to get away from why I called you in here to begin with.

As I started, my master is seeking to employ several adventuring types to roam about the land, taking on quests and fighting evil monsters and all that kind of stuff. Crawling through castles, rescuing maidens fair, battling beasts, diving into dungeons...you get the idea. And he's willing to pay you for it, if you're good or lucky enough to wade through hell and come back out on the other side alive.

Are you interested?

Night Below is an epic campaign originally made for AD&D 2nd Edition set in the Forgotten Realms where characters will work their way through and around the sleepy land of Haranshire, uncovering evils and delving into mystery and intrigue, all the while attempting to keep their own sanity while eventually traversing through the underdark to find the true source of the goings-on.

I will be converting this campaign to run under the 5th Edition ruleset.

Will you take up the mantle of helping the people of this fair countryside? Can you find your way to figuring out what true evil lies in this land? Are you brave enough to stop it once you do?

In this campaign your choices will matter. Choose wisely. And don't get in over your heads. Some evils take planning and waiting before confronting head on.

Character Creation:

We are going old school creation for this old school campaign.

1. Roll 4D6, re-roll 1s, keep the highest 3 dice. (Do this 6 times so that you have 6 scores.
2. Arrange these six scores anyway you like in your ability attribute slots. (Str, Dex, etc.).
2. All races in the 5e PHB or SRD are allowed.
3. Races that are specific to other campaigns, such as in the PotA books are not allowed without prior DM approval.
4. All characters start at 1st level with 0 experience points.
5. If you want to play an evil alignment, go for it. However, you guys are a group and should be working towards a common goal, so at least try to get along. And on the topic of alignment - if you are a good-aligned character and commit evil acts, don't be surprised when you have an alignment change. Just saying.
6. All characters start with maximum hit points at 1st level. That means that you do not have to roll for hit points, you just get whatever the maximum amount for your character would be. Levels after first will be rolled for.
7. Pick a starting class, race, background, traits, etc. from the PHP or SRD. You will start the game with equipment that is assigned to your class and background choice.

Tips:

My ideal group would have four to eight characters; the higher number the better as I intend to make this a very challenging adventure.

Demihuman PCs with underground abilities such as dwarves gnomes, and halflings will be helpful.

Given the amount of combat that will be involved, the party must include at least one full cleric with major access to the Healing sphere of spells or two with minor access (such as a druid or a split-class cleric is a good mix).

At least one wizard with serious firepower potential will be a major advantage.

The party should include at least one elf, if possible, and a warrior of NG alignment will find something he or she will treasure forever in this campaign.

We will be using a custom encumbrance system but applicants don't need to bother with that for now.

Characters submitted must include a backstory, description, and background. Interesting characters will be chosen for the campaign before ones that are a bunch of stats.

PbP Rules
Daily posts are expected, Monday thru Friday. Weekends are optional.

To speed up play, I will usually roll perception, survival, initiative, and all other rolls for the group as appropriate.

Because this is a PbP and a conversion from the 2e rules to 5e, encounters will be changed or removed and there will be more story and RP rewards.

The campaign will use a milestone leveling award instead of tracking individual xp.

Please provide your timezone in GMT. I am in Alabama, USA, GMT -5.

Recruitment and Start Times:
Recruitment ends on Saturday evening, January 30th. Four to Eight characters will be selected and announced Sunday evening, January 31st. Play will begin on Tuesday, February 2nd.

I am building a NG Mountain Dwarf Fighter, heavily armored. Is the Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide in play due to setting location?

Hmm... Let me just roll as a show of interest and I will see if I can come up with something.

4d6 ⇒ (5, 5, 6, 3) = 19 = 16
4d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 6, 2) = 20 = 18

I'll stat up an Tiefling Warlock. (Playing a lot of 5E but new race/class combo would be fun.)

4d6 ⇒ (1, 3, 1, 5) = 10 15
2d6 ⇒ (5, 5) = 10

4d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 5, 3) = 14 12
1d6 ⇒ 1
1d6 ⇒ 2

4d6 ⇒ (1, 3, 6, 6) = 16 16

1d6 ⇒ 1
1d6 ⇒ 2

4d6 ⇒ (6, 4, 6, 5) = 21 17
1d6 ⇒ 5

So 17,16,15,13,12,11 I can work with that

Let's see....

4d6 ⇒ (6, 3, 6, 5) = 20. 17
4d6 ⇒ (1, 2, 5, 1) = 9. Rerolls 2d6 ⇒ (6, 4) = 10 15
4d6 ⇒ (2, 5, 3, 3) = 13. 11

4d6 ⇒ (4, 3, 5, 6) = 18. 15
4d6 ⇒ (4, 5, 3, 5) = 17. 11

@DoubleGold

Amazing Rolls. Can't wait to see what you build with that.

Filios wrote:

It is indeed.

F. Castor wrote:

Since we are building and running under the 5e rules there is not a technically outright bladesinger class available however the eldritch knight is exactly that, a bladesinger. You get to a point where you can cast a cantrip and attack in the same round... Pretty much what a bladesinger is all about... Maybe mix in some Valor Bard down the road. Since we are starting at level 1 then you would start with the fighter class and then add the Eldritch Knight martial ability at level 3 and continue the bladesinger inspired build from there.

scranford wrote:

That would add some diversity to the group.

Glad to see some very familiar faces applying for the game.

4d6 ⇒ (6, 2, 3, 3) = 14 12
4d6 ⇒ (4, 5, 5, 6) = 20 16
4d6 ⇒ (1, 2, 6, 4) = 13

Reroll 1: 1d6 ⇒ 311
4d6 ⇒ (6, 3, 4, 1) = 14
Reroll 1: 1d6 ⇒ 5 15

So: 16, 15, 15, 13, 12, 11

Can we use class options from the Unearthed Arcana articles on the Wizards site? Specifically, I'm wondering about the Undying Light warlock patron from the Light, Dark, Underdark article.

I was actually referring to the wizard's Bladesinger subclass for elves and half-elves from the Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide book. I think it is called Bladesinging Tradition and it is more or less one more wizard school, such as, say, Conjuration and Abjuration and such.

tribeof1 wrote:

Those UA articles have not been play tested properly. After running the number crunch on the Warlock Pact it is way over powered and not in line with the other Pacts so I would say no to all UA material as of right now. The books that are allowed are the PHB and the Sword Coast Legends supplement. However I might allow a race from the PotA hardcover such as the deep gnome or a genasi on a case by case basis.

I actually forgot they added that. Haven't seen it in play yet. But if it is in SCL hardcover then it is allowed without issue.

Huh. Not a single 1. What are freekin' odds? :p

Full disclosure: I'm not gonna play a cleric.

(Unless no one else does...which almost guarantees that I'll hafta play a cleric. :p)

Mind you, with a fighter and two mana-tossers, a cleric is all we need...right now. =}

Still meditating. Would like to play a rogue, but I'm still newly dove into the 5e bathwater and I'm not sure how everything tastes.

Wisconsin, GMT -6.

Rogues are much stronger, and a Cleric in the Life Domain is actually a great deal of fun.

I'm going to play a Cleric, but not the Life Cleric. I'm going to go Light, Tempest or Arcane, haven't decided which yet.

Not sure which way I'm going to go yet. I'll try not to step on anyone's toes.

Well if we can get 8 solid players for the game it would be ideal. That also allows for some room for attrition if we lose one or two. This campaign is setup for a large group as it will be a difficult one with lots of choices and things that will impact the game world.

As I am prepping this not in the typical (Enter zone 1 for level 1 characters, progress to zone 2 at 2nd level, etc.) the world will be dynamic and you might find yourself on a quest that you might have to decide to tackle later at a higher level or attempt at low level for greater rewards.

Just because you are 1st level doesn't mean the dragon is not in that cave until you are high enough to encounter it. LoL.

The campaign will have tons of roleplay opportunity for well fleshed out characters and it will be a huge benefit if the party had a faceman as alliances and allies will be there to be formed but the campaign will also be very heavy on hard/deadly combats, lots of magical items to be found, even artifacts.

You will learn formula for creating magic items by reverse engineering the ones you find. Learn to create unique items and equipment and eventually raise a army from your alliances.

The campaign deals with a lot of themes, both above ground and below, quest and setups, side quest, missions, sub missions from those all while moving toward a long term goal. Eventually moving into the underdark to face a larger threat that dwells there.

My Drarf Fighter will be up tonight.

Rolling:

4d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 5, 2) = 15 = 13

4d6 ⇒ (1, 6, 5, 6) = 18 Reroll 1s: 1d6 ⇒ 3 = 17

4d6 ⇒ (6, 4, 6, 3) = 19 = 16

4d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 1, 2) = 10 Reroll 1s: 1d6 ⇒ 4 = 13

4d6 ⇒ (2, 2, 4, 2) = 10 = 8

4d6 ⇒ (6, 4, 3, 1) = 14 Reroll 1s: 1d6 ⇒ 2 = 14

Dang. Pretty nice stats!

Now to see what I want to build... *rubs hands together happily*

So, tackle the higher level zones first, but not too much higher, get the experience from it, then the lower level zones will be easier.

Pathfinder Adventure Subscriber

I messed around with the tiefling warlock and couldn't come up with the build I like. Thinking human rogue with some social skills. I'll go through the players handbook again to be sure.

I tried to run this game twice with my home group, and as far as we got was halfway through. Good luck, it's an awesome campaign.

To give everyone a little background on how the campaign will start. This should also tie into your back stories when you write them.

All of you are in Waterdeep for whatever reason that you decide your character has ended up here and all of you have been looking, quite unsuccessfully for work for quite some time. Down on your luck and out of, our just about out of coin. Nothing has been posted in any of the taverns and it looks like all your opportunities for adventure has dried up. You are desperate and will just about take anything for the opportunity to make some coin. All of you should have a vague idea of who the others in the group are since you have all been kind of hanging out at the same places lately.

That is all about to change however as you step into a inn called the Yawning Portal this evening. The Yawning Portal Inn stands on Rainrun Street in the city's Castle Ward, two doors west of The Empty Keg Tavern. Right next to the inn, between it and the Keg, stands Mother Salinka's House of Pleasure, a shabby, low-coin festhall.

You have heard the famed stories about the well in the inn's main room that leads down to Undermountain. Surely there would be someone that needs something done here that fits your particular skill set.

With your equipment in tow you step through the doors....

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I am definitely interested.

I only have the Core book, so my character will be built with that unless I decide to pick up SCAG from the store.

16 = 4d6 ⇒ (3, 5, 1, 1) = 10 reroll: 2d6 ⇒ (6, 5) = 11
14 = 4d6 ⇒ (6, 4, 2, 1) = 13 reroll: 1d6 ⇒ 4
16 = 4d6 ⇒ (5, 5, 5, 6) = 21
9 = 4d6 ⇒ (1, 2, 2, 5) = 10 reroll: 1d6 ⇒ 2
11 = 4d6 ⇒ (4, 3, 1, 4) = 12 reroll: 1d6 ⇒ 1 reroll: 1d6 ⇒ 3
13 = 4d6 ⇒ (4, 1, 4, 5) = 14 reroll: 1d6 ⇒ 4

Interesting set of abilities.

I am not sure what class/race I want to play yet, I will have to look in my book once I complete other obligations on the board.

I am initially thinking of some sort of spellcaster, though I am playing a Warlock in tribeof1's campaign, so i will not be playing another Warlock.

UPDATE:

Got an idea. Tiefling bard, maybe headed toward the College of Valor. Statting up now...

Just let me know when you have the alias all done with the new stats, equipment, etc.

Also you will need to update the back story to match where the campaign begins as posted above.

Couple of questions:

1) How big of an issue is it if I have no prior knowledge of the setting?

2) How big of an issue is it if I can't access maps from work (where most of my weekday posting will come from)?

3) How do you feel about custom backgrounds?

EDIT: Already have a concept that didn't get into another game, and could easily convert the profile. Would you want backstory here, or in the profile?

EDIT: Already have a concept that didn't get into another game, and could easily convert the profile. Would you want backstory here, or in the profile?

1) Not being familiar with the Forgotten Realms is not a issue at all since this entire campaign will be in a very small area of the world and below it. However a good grasp of the 5e rules would not hurt.

2) I do use battlemaps for combat. I host them on my own server as a simple .jpg so they would be important to casters and such to determine area of effect.

3) Custom backgrounds are fine as long as you adhere to the rules for creating them in the PHB.

The background should go in your alias for easy access and then link or post with the alias here so it can be referenced.

Okey, I'm game. I have to say, though, that I have no experience with 5e but I do know the base rules and I'm a fast learner. I'll understand rejection based upon that fact, just wanted to be honest.

Let's get to the rolling!

Rolls:

First: 4d6 ⇒ (2, 1, 1, 1) = 5

Oh god. Lame. Rerollin'

Re: 3d6 ⇒ (3, 5, 1) = 9
And again: 1d6 ⇒ 1
And again and again: 1d6 ⇒ 3

Second: 4d6 ⇒ (5, 5, 4, 3) = 17

Third: 4d6 ⇒ (5, 5, 1, 1) = 12
Dice Gods hate me: 2d6 ⇒ (6, 4) = 10

Fourth: 4d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 6, 4) = 17

Fifth: 4d6 ⇒ (1, 5, 5, 3) = 14
Only one? Good day: 1d6 ⇒ 1
What a bigmouth: 1d6 ⇒ 5

Final Sixth: 4d6 ⇒ (5, 4, 4, 6) = 19

So we end with 11-14-16-15-15-15. Very good. Good indeed. Praise be the DM for he allows rerolls on 1.

I'll come back in a while with a character!

P.S. GMT +1, but I have rather inexistent sleeping times and I'm already playing with a Florida based DM in another game in this very forum, so times shouldn't be a problem.

Hi

I'm here from the other board. Here are my rolls:

A: 4d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 1, 4) = 13
B: 4d6 ⇒ (2, 1, 5, 4) = 12
C: 4d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 5, 4) = 15

Reroll D: 2d6 ⇒ (2, 6) = 8
Reroll E: 2d6 ⇒ (4, 3) = 7
Reroll F: 1d6 ⇒ 5

Final: 12, 12, 15, 10, 12, 15

Nothing huge, but gives me options.

I was considering the cleric role too, but I'll look back over other people's choices and see if that's needed.

I'm in the UK by the way GMT 0

Hello, I don't really know 5e rules, but I'd be interested in learning them. How possible would it be for me to participate? I am an experienced gamer (3.x, PFRPG, a bit of 4e, etc) and PBPer (nearly 25k posts since 2012). I'll roll stats in the meanwhile.

4d6 ⇒ (3, 4, 6, 2) = 15=13
5d6 ⇒ (3, 1, 5, 6, 4) = 19=15
8d6 ⇒ (2, 1, 1, 5, 4, 1, 1, 5) = 20=14
4d6 ⇒ (5, 5, 4, 5) = 19=15
6d6 ⇒ (4, 1, 5, 1, 6, 6) = 23=17
4d6 ⇒ (5, 3, 2, 3) = 13=11

Assuming I understand your meaning of reroll 1s correctly, that's:
17,15,15,14,13,11

I want to play a dwarven (shield dwarf if possible) rogue. Do light weapons use dex to hit and damage in 5e? If so before racial mods...

Str 15
Dex 17
Con 14
Int 11
Wis 13
Cha 15

A little intro RP:

All of you are in Waterdeep for whatever reason that you decide your character has ended up here and all of you have been looking, quite unsuccessfully for work for quite some time. Down on your luck and out of, or just about out of coin. Nothing has been posted in any of the taverns and it looks like all your opportunities for adventure has dried up. You are desperate and will just about take anything for the opportunity to make some coin.

Three bloody weeks. It's been three weeks since Grommuk Geargrip won a little too much at dice in Baldur's Gate and had to get out of town quick after being accused of cheating. He took s%$+ pay for work as a guard on the first caravan to Waterdeep he could find. Since his arrival in the City of Splendours he'd squandered all the proceeds of his gambling and guard work both. Grommuk had a love for fine food, fine women and fine spirits, a love for life really. Grommuk's love was not cheap. Luckily he was a skilled burglar, spy, and knew his way around a blade. There was always work for a dwarf like him...or so he had thought.

Grommuk sighs as he surveys the fronts of the three buildings. He squeezes down on the hard, round lump in his palm. The dwarf bites his lip as he ponders where to spend his last gold piece. He flips the coin casually along the backs of his fingers as he considers his options. Salinka's again? Brida sure is a good hump... he thinks. But won't be a lick o' work down between them thighs. Might as well throw this lovely inter the storm drain. Nae, it's time to be responsible. A pint and some good old fashioned rumormongering it tis.

Grommuk slips the coin into his belt pouch and quickly runs his hands over all his gear, silently checking that each piece is in place. His left hand rests on the pommel of his trusty blade, Gutripper. He gives his prematurely white beard a quick stroke, and standing up straight he walks into the Yawning Portal. As the noise and bustle of the inn's common room washes over him, he keeps his eyes open for any familiar faces or anyone with the look - the look of someone in trouble. The look of someone who is willing to pay to have that trouble resolved.

Grommuk shoulders through the crowd of taller humanoids, and hops up onto a bar stool next to a drunk looking human man. "A pint!" he cries to the bartender.

Dark Archive

I'm going back and forth on a half-elf warrior, sworn to the service of an obscure nature power, either the celestial paragon/eladrin lord Gwynharwyf, or Khalreshaar, the half-elven aspect of Mielikki.

If the first, I'd probably do Fighter 1 --> Warlock (Archfey) for the rest of my levels. For the latter, straight Paladin (Oath of the Ancients).

Either way I'll go with Outlander or something similar for background, with a mix of wilderness and diplomacy skills. Heavy armor, sword-and-board regardless. Just need to decide if I want arcane or divine spells as I level up.

For humans, use the standard stat bonuses or the variant?

Brian you are welcome to submit a character, you will need to get one of these other fine players either to help you build one or if you don't have access to a 5e Players Handbook then you can use the information in the SRD or Basic Rules to create your character. You can find the basic rules and a step by step character building guide by Clicking Here

Once you have your character built then you will need to create an alias for it here on the messageboard and drop all the reletive information into it for me to review. Feel free to ask any questions you may have but the character will need to be completed before I count it as a submission. However I do like the concept and intro that you have provided already.

It is up to you. You can take the standard stat bonus for humans or you can do a varient human where you take the reduced stat bonus but get a feat at 1st level. The choice is completely up to you.

Looks good. I like him.

On the section where you chose Criminal as your background you need to select a Personality Trait, a Ideal, a Bond, a Flaw and a Criminal Specialty from under that background. This is mostly all for fluff but it gives us a little to work with as far as who he is. Also list these on your alias and I think you have every thing in order.

Sigh... Despite my interest in the game, I find myself without as much free time as I would want and need. Thus I have to bow out of this recruitment.

Happy gaming all.

Grand Lodge

And here he is, the hero the common folk needs... the hero the common folk created... the hero who will steal your heart!

Alexander Ironwiiiiiiiiiill! *cheering crowd*

I went for a classic vibe with him, but ey! first time I'd be playing 5e, what better than a good natured fighter? Plus I love fighters ^^

I hope you like it and I really really hope I didn't make any mistake while building him.

Okay, I'll try to figure those out. I'm going from the SRD, so it's not exactly spelled out.

Just popping in to wish you good luck Asmodeus. I ran Night Below converted when D&D 3.0 first came out (2000'ish?). It can be quite a beast. It took 2+ years over PbP and that was including meet-ups for a weekend of gaming twice a year (we all lived in the same state). Sadly, it ended in a TPK in the last book.

Again, good luck everybody and steer clear the temple of Jui...

I will get Pip an alias and backstory once I get home.
