Neva stopped for a moment, thinking that she’d better not interrupt her friend. She smiled, guessing that Zellara would chide her for turning away from another strange situation. All their quarrels were about Neva’s desire for the solid and comfortable; as opposed to Zellara’s belief that life was to be found in tumultuous change.

“I guess it makes sense that on a night of political unrest Zellara’d be entertaining a strange assortment of armed men”, she thought to herself. “I suppose I’d better go in.”

Taking a deep breath, she stepped into the small house…and stopped short. The place was a wreck! Where was she? Who are these people?

“What’s going on here?” she demanded, the worries for her friend triggering her protective instincts. “Where’s Zellara?”

Rutter's eyes flashed to the box and back to the woman barging in. He suppressed a grin. "When was the last time you saw her?"

Female Human Cleric 6 of Pharasma (AC: 14 [T: 12 FF: 12] | HP: 34/36 | F+5, R+4, W+10 | Init: +2 |Perc: +3)

"A few weeks ago, but answer my question. Where is my friend? Is she alright? I knew her son was missing, but has something happened to her?"

Neva could feel the bad news coming, and she set her jaw. She looked at each of the people in turn, trying to gauge them quickly. Her heart was beating fast, but she wasn't panicking.

The initial shock of the door opening receded as the woman entered. Looking around at the others and seeming perhaps the voice of authority here. "She had us run an errand for her this evening, but this is not how we found the place earlier. She wanted revenge for her son, but after what we have seen this evening, the revenge for her was even more personal. It would appear her mysticism was quite advanced, I'm afraid because as crazy as this sounds, as we seem to have been hired by her ghost."

Copper:

You don't detect anything more than a faint trace of magic around the room, perhaps there were spells cast here recently, but they are no longer in effect. You also notice muted auras through several of the bags that contain items taken from Lamm's hoard.

As the shock sets in for the party, a swirling mist arises, seeming to emanate from the bag that Rutter is holding. It quickly settles into a human form and Zellara’s features mold themselves into the face. If you had not been tricked earlier, you could easily be fooled into thinking that the woman was flesh and blood. She speaks in the same passionate tones that she used earlier, although they take on a haunting tone with your knowledge of their supernatural origins.

”Well done, brave men, myself and all of Korvosa owe you a great debt for ridding the city of Gaedren Lamm. I apologize for deceiving you, but I was desperate to see justice brought to him, swift and bloody as it was, it was no less than he deserved.”

”Neva, dear friend, I’m sorry that you had to learn of my death this way, I thought to contact you with the others, but this business of vengeful death-dealing seemed to ill-suit you. However, I sense that Korvosa will need your talents in addition to those of the others here. Although I cannot divine its nature, the Harrow speaks of a dire threat to the city and it will require might in arms, magic and healing to defend it.”

Seeing the involuntary look of disgust on Neva’s face, she quickly interjects: ”I know that my lingering here cannot please you, sincere in your faith as you are. However, I am no spirit called back from the grave by foul magics, I remain here, tied to my Harrow Deck, of my own free will. Once Korvosa is safe again, I will gladly go forth to the Great Boneyard and present myself for judgement by the Lady of the Graves.”

”In the meantime, I may render myself of some usefulness. The Harrow still speaks to me, although its ways are twisted by my current form. One trick that I have learned is that I am able to decipher magical dweomers with great ease, merely touch a card to an enchanted item and I can determine its properties. And as you have discovered, I can also alter the perception of reality, making sights, sounds and scents appear as I wish.”

Feel free to question Zellara, although she can’t tell you anything more about the ominous threat to the city other than it is as grave a danger as Korvosa has ever faced.

The powers of the Harrow Deck are: identify 3/day, major image 1/day, of course, the powers are under Zellara’s control, so she can choose not to render them if she doesn’t agree with the manner in which they are being used.

This was going to be more awkward than Rutter imagined. "Um... Lamm kept a souvenir of his encounter with you. How does your people prepare its dead, er, passed on... uh, folk?"

Female Human Cleric 6 of Pharasma (AC: 14 [T: 12 FF: 12] | HP: 34/36 | F+5, R+4, W+10 | Init: +2 |Perc: +3)

Neva’s eyes filled with tears at the sight of her friend, and sorrow overcame the sense of revulsion she’d expected as the apparition manifested. As it shared its tale (no, “her” tale, it IS Zellara) Neva felt a growing calm. When Zellara asked her, once again, to use her powers for the good of Korvosa, she felt something inside her shift.

For years (decades now, really) she’d fought against this pull to face the larger evils in the world. But she was done fighting it.

She looked over this group of young men: a burly Shoanti Sable Company Marine; a thin (half-elven, maybe?) follower of the Dawnflower; a wisp of a Varisian with shoulder-length hair; and a tough-looking halfling. They were children! Especially the Varisian, who might be of age, but looked 16, at most.

“Well Zellara, you win” she said, sighing. “Someone’s got to watch over these young ones.”

She turned to the halfling as he spoke to Zellara. “I know what do. Please, hand her remains to me.” She crossed the room to take them. “Is anyone hurt? If so, I can help. But I’d like to know more, starting with your names.”

OOC to all:
I've read the thread, so we can assume the backstory to this point is covered. But if you'd like to roleplay some of the introductions, that's cool with me. I'll check back several times today so we can get it over quick.

Senjin approaches Neva, "I'm Senjin, a member of the Sable Guard. I am sorry for loss of your friend. Perhaps you sound be the caretaker of her spirit in those cards till she is at peace."

Rutter's eyes narrowed and he spoke through gritted teeth. "Young ones? I don't know where you're from, but I've been running on these streets and shingles for 27 years, near as I can figure. That counts for something around here." He handed her the hatbox brusquely, only afterwards remembering that the woman whose head it contained was watching. He looked away from the ghost, hoping she didn't feel aggrieved by the rude handling.

"I'm Copper Fratello, ma'am. Arcane Practitioner by trade." The runic circles in Copper's eyes flash briefly as he spins the platinum band around his finger.

Great. Just what I need. Another person to think Im just a kid.

“Nice to meet you, Senjin. I must admit, I am comforted by your presence in the group. When I first entered, I feared that I was witnessing a crime. I am happy to carry the deck, if it is alright with the others.”

She turned to the halfling as he spoke.

Rutter wrote:
"Young ones? I don't know where you're from, but I've been running on these streets and shingles for 27 years, near as I can figure. That counts for something around here."

“Indeed, each year on the ‘streets and shingles’ of Korvosa is worth three anywhere else, Master Halfling. Your expertise must be impressive, so I’m sorry if I caused offense.” She took the box from him, noting wryly how his attitude changed when he recalled the presence of Zellara’s ghost.

In turn, she gave a slight bow to Copper. “Well met, Mister Fratello. I see in your eyes a power that belies your apparent youth as well. I apologize to you, too. I was feeling some of my years just now, and I spoke without considering the feelings of the others present.”

She turned to Zellara’s ghost. “And that goes for you, too, my friend. I am so sorry for you, your family and those who loved and trusted you.” She paused, thinking over the rites and duties of a priestess of Pharasma. “I’ve never had the opportunity before, so I guess I’ll take it: do you have a preferred place of rest for your remains?” she asked solemnly, her head swimming at the otherworldly nature of the moment.

Zellara responds to Neva's question in soft tones: "Thank you Neva, I knew that I could count on you to lay my remains to rest. My family's remains are in the Gray district, on the north side of a small knoll topped with an ash grove near the northwest corner. If you can inter what remains of my mortal body there, next to my kin, I would be grateful. And I rest a bit easier knowing that you will be in possession of the Harrow Deck that houses my spirit."

With this, the image of the Zellara dissipates back into a mist that quickly flows back into the Harrow Deck.

For the moment, it's largely up to the group what to do next. Hopefully Damersel’s still with us and will chime in soon. I'm working on the next encounter and I'll work that into the group’s actions.

"I guess we ought to see about getting whatever is left of her buried then." Copper winces as he looks over at Neva, realizing his words might have sounded more harsh than they were meant. "I meant no offense, ma'am."

"Thought she was going to take care of that? The rest of us have some bounty from Lamm's place to divvy up. We can all go together to try to sell it, or we can just divide it up here. I'm not sure how all this chaos will affect the price we can get, if we can even find a buyer."

Male Human Arcane-Blooded Sorcerer 4 (AC: 12 [T: 12 FF: 10](+4MA, +4 Sh) | HP: 32/32 | F+2, R+4, W+5 | Init +2 |Perc +1)

"Either way works for me, but I think we ought to know what all we have here before we decide to go selling any of it. When we entered the room, I cast a spell to check for magical auras, and felt some sort of muted magical power from within one of our packs. If Neva doesn't mind helping, Zellara's spirit did say she was able to determine the properties of things." Copper then turns towards Rutter, putting his back between the halfling and Neva, he speaks quietly to Rutter, "I didnt want to appear as if the goods we nabbed were more important to us than Zellara is. Or was. We may need Neva on our side, if things get as messy as Zellara is predicting."

DM Cloud:
I am unsure how to proceed. As a member of the guard I feel impelled to go back and join the force, but obviously that probably does not fit in the adventure. I guess would Zellara's dire warnings be enough to go awol. I am sure this comes up with any Sable Company characters that go through this adventure. You may have this thought out, but it is on my mind and I didn't want to go racing off with a 'meet you later' if that does not fit the adventure.

"Tell you what, none of that stuff looked too useful, unless you are telling me there is magic in 'em. But I didn't come along to rob the robber. Divvy it as you like. Consider it payment for me taking the kill. That was surely worth more than Lamm's mementos"

Female Human Cleric 6 of Pharasma (AC: 14 [T: 12 FF: 12] | HP: 34/36 | F+5, R+4, W+10 | Init: +2 |Perc: +3)

As Zellara’s ghost returned to the Harrow Deck, Neva whispered softly, “So it shall be.”

Neva turned her attention to Copper as he spoke, smiling knowingly at his nervousness about the remains. She was used to such things. To those unfamiliar with it, death created a tension between the requirements of the deceased and the ongoing needs of the living. For a follower of Pharasma, however, these ongoing requirements were part of the point, the way to have death literally be part of life.

“There is no offense, Mister Fratello. I request an escort from you all to the Gray district, given the unrest on the street. But I understand you must finish some business here first. It is appropriate. Death only interrupts the life of the deceased, as we say. Everyone else must keep on living. Speaking of which, I’d imagine that this marine needs to return to barracks.
Please, do what you need to do, and I shall pray quietly in the meantime.”

Neva moved to a corner of the house, and began arranging Zellara’s remains for travel to the Gray. She prayed softly while she did so.

Neva will take this opportunity to memorize spells

"Well, let's see what it was that set off your magic sense, Copper. Which bag was it?" [ooc]Rutter will then empty the contents of the bag, until Copper identifies the magic item.

"So can Zellara, or the deck, tell us what this does?" Rutter calls over to Neva.

Male Human Arcane-Blooded Sorcerer 4 (AC: 12 [T: 12 FF: 10](+4MA, +4 Sh) | HP: 32/32 | F+2, R+4, W+5 | Init +2 |Perc +1)

Copper's eyes flutter again as the arcane words spill from his lips, "Openbaar aan me de magische energieën die me omringen."

Cast Detect Magic again.

The spell shows, after several seconds, which items from the pilfered goods appear to have a magical aura.

"These.", he says, indicating anything that the spell shows him.

Senjin:

Actually the module is less than no help about the obvious conflict of interest that members of various organizations will have with their call to duty. However, it should work fine for you to return to the barracks while the others are off doing their business. Although it might pay for you to be a bit greedier (okay, bad pun), i.e. demanding that you meet up with the rest of them later to claim your share of the spoils. Either way, you'll be reintegrated into the story without missing much, if anything.

For the next couple of days I plan to have Damersel be a (rather quiet) NPC until his player comes back. If he hasn't posted by Monday, we'll recruit a replacement.

Copper points out several items that glow with a magical aura. Both of the vials and the obsidian wand.

A few spellcraft rolls for Copper:
1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 191d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 251d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13

He recognizes the aura of one of the vials as remarkably similar to a spell he has seen in action that sharpens the edges of a weapon, making it deal grievous wounds. The others are beyond his knowledge, but by holding a card from Zellara's Deck to the item, she is able to implant a remarkably detailed analysis of the aura in his brain. He is able to determine that the wand is able to call forth the magic missile spell, while the other vial can temporarily transmute metal to silver.

The magical items are: oil of keen edge, silversheen, and a wand of magic missile (23 charges).

I'll presume that Neva, Copper and Rutter are going to lay Zellara's remains to rest and then visit one of Rutter's unsavory contacts to fence the goods. Senjin will return to the barracks and Damersel to his temple. For those at the fence, let me know if you are planning on keeping anything, and feel free to make some Bluff/Diplomacy and Appraise checks.

Seeing the items splayed out and the fact that magic is present, Senjin scratches his jawline. "Well...I am going to need to fix this armor on my leg.." A slow smile developing on his face.

He looks to Rutter, "You think these other things can bring in some coin?" He takes another look out the window. "I can't say I really know you folk from Shelyn's Brother, but you dragged me out of a pretty tight spot. If we agree to see out this vision of Zellara's I can see lending my axe to the venture."

"First, I will need to see what I can do at the barracks, but perhaps we can meet back here tomorrow with the spoils and perhaps in the meantime discover what we can of what exactly is going on out there."

Male Human Arcane-Blooded Sorcerer 4 (AC: 12 [T: 12 FF: 10](+4MA, +4 Sh) | HP: 32/32 | F+2, R+4, W+5 | Init +2 |Perc +1)

"Sounds fine with me, Senjin. See you then." Copper looks to the others and says, "Until we can value this stuff and decide together what to keep and what to sell, I would like to hold on to this wand. It is able to cast an offensive spell, which I am able to use, and might come in handy, should we get in a tight spot while we try to sell the stuff." If no one protests, Copper will tuck the wand away in his sleeve, trying to keep it hard to spot, but quick to draw.

Looking to Rutter, Copper asks, "I think we ought to go with Neva to bury the box, and can sell this stuff later. Whatcha think?"

"Yeah, we can take her out to the Gray."

Senjin returns barely before dawn to the barracks of the Sable Guard, where he gets a quick earful for being out so long with the city in a state of near anarchy. However, they don’t have much time to spend chewing him out and he is quickly put to work. After daybreak, the riots calm somewhat and he is finally able to catch some much-needed sleep.

Rutter, Copper and Neva make the dangerous journey to the Gray safely, although at one point, it required the group displaying their weapons to scare off some prowling footpads. They find Zellara’s family plot and Neva performs the ritual just as dawn breaks over Korvosa. Although she misspeaks a few words, Neva is content with her first try at Pharasma’s ritual and everyone feels more at peace at the completion of it, even as chaos reigns around them.

After several tries, Rutter finally locates someone that is willing to buy Lamm’s various treasures. Griswald looks over the items quickly and after a bit of haggling, during which Copper manages to convince him that they have another buyer very interested in the wares, he offers you 900 gold for the lot of mundane treasure (400 gp for the oil of keen edge and 140 gp for the silversheen if you want to sell them as well). However, he separates the precious brooch from the rest of the items and says, ”Now this, well I don’t know where you got it, but I won’t touch it. See this symbol? The Queen’s own jewelry! Now, I heard that it was stolen months ago and there’s a reward out for its return, a princely one at that, over a thousand gold. But you have to go to the castle to collect it and I’m not setting foot around there, they had enough reasons to lock me up before all this madness started, now.... well my head wouldn't be worth two silvers.”

"Whatcha think, Rutter? Other than the necklace of course, which I guess we ought to hold on to." Copper pulls the wand out of his sleeve and gives it a slight twirl in his fingers, "And what about this. How much would you be willing to give for it?"

Also, did Zellara's spirit happen to mention what caster level the wand is or anything that might have hinted at it?

Griswald pulls out the same monocle that he used to examine the silversheen and oil. Taking the wand in his hands and examining it, "Well, looks about half-way gone, but I'll give you 400 gold for it, I'm sure I can peddle it to someone at the Academy as a self-defense weapon."

Same appraise/bluff rolls, the wand is CL 1, the oil is CL 5.

Neva kept quiet during the negotiations with Griswald, but she was worried about that brooch. She planned to discuss their options after they left the fence's presence. The thought of being caught with a Queen's jewelry wasn't a pleasant one, not anywhere, but certainly not in Korvosa.

"Well, maybe we'll take the brooch in for the reward ourselves. What about this amulet? I found this one a couple days ago."

Bluff: 5:
1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5 As he explains where he got the amulet he just produced, Rutter turns away from Copper and Neva suspiciously.

DM:
This is the amulet Rutter found on the human in the bunkroom. The kukri is the one under one of the beds in that room. Rutter didn't look too closely at it at the time. Is it masterwork or mundane?

"And this kukri?"

I'm for selling everything except the wand and the queen's brooch, obviously. Also, would keep the kukri if it's masterwork. Unless the amulet is unique in some way, we'll probably sell that as well.

Sense Motive 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22
Such a waste, lol.

Copper gives Rutter a knowing look, indicating he realizes the halfling is lying, but shrugs and turns away to look at some other trinket the fence has for sale, not being particularly concerned with where the halfling might have actually gotten the amulet or kukri.

900+540 for potions sounds good to me. I dont know if you plan on adding the kukri or amulet to the pot, Rutter, but thats up to you, obviously.
For splitting the amount, I'll add in the 400 for the wand, but keep the wand, unless someone else wants it, for part of my share.
With 1840 total, if we split if with Damersel as well, assuming he is still with us, that gives each person a 460gp share, with whoever takes the wand getting it and 60gp. If Damersel is gone, a three-way split would be 613.33 (repeating) per share, with the person with the wand taking 213.33(repeating) gp.
That sound fair?

"Hmm.... the amulet's got a nice garnet, fifty gold for that. The kukri's just your average street tough's blade, five gold, and that's being generous."

"Alright, I'll sell the amulet and the extra kukri that I had already, and then we'll split the loot from Lamm's place with the Sable man when we meet up with him."

"The queen's brooch, Griswald... besides the reward, what would you say the cash value of it would be, if it hadn't been from the queen's personal wardrobe?"

Appraise: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 1 = 18 just to try to gauge the actual monetary value of the brooch, though I know we can't sell it

"Personally, I don't think they'd believe me, either, if I brought the brooch to the castle. But if we brought it with upstanding citizens like the Sable man and the priestess here, maybe they'll believe that we found it in a pickpocket's stash."

Neva felt Rutter's plan was plausible, and nodded her assent. She didn't know how much she'd qualify as an "upstanding citizen" of Korvosa, but she understood the tough halfling's point. She'd always hated the strict laws of the city as they did more to create "outlaws" than to secure order. There was no balance here. It was one of the reasons she'd left.

Copper tucks the wand back into his sleeve, and begins seperating out the piles of coins for Rutter, Senjin, and himself, trying to get as large of value coins as possible, so the bags are as small and light as possible. While sorting, he keeps a suspicious eye towards Griswald.

When the coins are sorted, Copper hands Rutter a bag with his share, and another for Senjin.

So, I guess the three of us can just pay out to Damersel if he happens to post again.
*Adds loot to character sheet*

Responding to Rutter's question, Griswald looks at him as though responding to a strong-willed child. "Well, I toldja once that you ain't gonna find a buyer for it, but if you get someone with a lot of money that doesn't care about getting on a monarch's bad side... maybe five thousand gold? But I don't really deal in that high-end stuff much."

To Rutter's limited knowledge, this seems reasonable given the materials and craftsmanship.

Let me know if anyone wants to do anything in particular before meeting back up with Senjin at Zellar's. Otherwise, I'll just presume that everyone grabs some rest and we can pick up there.

Once outside Griswald's shop, Copper speaks quickly and quietly, "Not that I dont trust your friend back there, Rutter, but if Griswald thinks he could stand to turn a profit on turning us in as the one's who stole the brooch, we don't want to be found with it. I suggest we either find someplace to put this thing quick, or go turn it in now. I'm sure if we cut her in on the reward, Neva wouldn't mind helping us return it, while keeping us looking innocent."

"I agree, that brooch is not good to be carrying around. We should get it back to the castle as soon as possible. I can help."
Neva looked over the remaining pair. "Do you two need to sleep? she asked, a little worried by their haggard appearance.

Outside, Rutter agrees with Copper. "I wouldn't trust Griswald, either, but I don't think we need to worry about him turning us in. If he's afraid to go to the castle with the brooch, I doubt he'll go to the castle without it."

He turns to Neva: "Yeah, we should probably turn in. We can camp at Zellara's tonight, since we're meeting the sable man there tomorrow anyway."

"Sounds good to me." Copper follows along with Rutter and Neva, keeping an eye out for anything or anyone who might try to cause them trouble.

Feel free to proceed to meeting at Zellara's with Senjin. Nothing unusual will happen to you before then unless you bring it upon yourselves...

From rumors on the streets and in the barracks, you have managed to make out a rough picture of what has thrown the city into its current chaotic state. The rumors of the cause of the death of King Eodred II are a bit vague, but the most prevalent one is that he suffered from some disease that was beyond even the priesthoods of Sarenrae and Abadar's skill to cure. Upon his death, Queen Ileosa ascended to the throne, to the displeasure of the majority of the populace. The castle seneschal has also disappeared, rumored to have perished in the initial riots at the base of Castle Korvosa.

The majority of the rioters are the middle and lower classes, who were already stifled by Eodred's spendthrift regime and view Ileosa as a petulant gold-digger (at best, a murderer at worst). The riots have severely impacted the business of the city, most importantly, slowing the supply of food to a trickle. The Korvosan Guard and Sable Marines have been hard-pressed to keep the rioters in check and Ileosa in desperation has turned to the Order of the Nail. The Hellknights were brought in to provide a calming force, yet they are trained for war, not police work and have cracked down on the chaos by drowning it in blood. As you can imagine, all of this has only inflamed the riots and resistance and the state of order in the city is little better than it was two days ago. The only upside is that now it has become more clear which areas of the city are held by the royal forces and which by those hostile to the Queen, making travel possible, if still dangerous.

In the evening there will be a subtle knock and Senjin will let himself in. He will share what he learned about the riots from his fellow troopers. He looks a bit haggard.

"I am not in too much trouble over last night. I told them I got caught up in the riots and had to fight my way through. I got assigned to the stables...there are worse jobs..and it means I am not on call for the watch flights, so a little more time to get at what Zellara was worried about. But things are tense, as the Sable Company reports to the Seneshal, who disappeared last night, supposedly in the riots."

New day so I emptied my spell usage.

Copper rises early and ventures out into the city, trying to find something quickly and quietly for breakfast, bringing the food back with him to Zellara's to await Senjin's arrival with the others. Once the others wake, Copper offers them some of the food and water as well.

When Senjin arrives, Copper offers him some of the food as well, and listens quietly as Senjin says his piece.

Just let me know how much it would cost to something simple, that I could get without being gone too long.

And I meant to convey all of DMCLoud's text that Senjin would know in my posting, just wanted to make that clear that I wasn't limiting myself to just what I typed, that was just RPing how it all directly affects Senjin.

In the morning, Rutter searched the place.

In response to the questioning looks from the others: "I'm looking for a good place to stash the brooch, in case we can't move it. It sounds like there's some confusion about the passing of the king, so it may be best to steer clear of the castle until things settle down. Maybe the sable man can tell us if the castle is as confused as the rest of the city."

Rutter checks walls and baseboards for a place to stash the brooch. Not sure if that would be a stealth check (1d20 + 11 ⇒ (13) + 11 = 24) or perception check (1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8) - he'd take 20 to do it, if possible. Otherwise, use any check that applies (you can roll it if it's something else entirely).

By the early afternoon, Rutter was getting antsy waiting for Senjin. He wanted to spend some of his money, and he'd wanted to celebrate killing Hookshanks.

"I'll be back in a couple hours."

Rutter will leave the brooch stashed in a good hiding place he found earlier or with Copper or Neva. He'll try to buy a set of masterwork thieves tools (100 GP) and a masterwork kukri (308 GP). He'll then try to find a brothel and hire a pair of halfling women to give him a bath, a shave, and ... other services (?? GP). Let me know if all of this is available amid all the chaos and a price for the brothel, if available. I haven't updated his profile yet.

Rutter returns from his excursion in the early evening. When Senjin finally comes in, he tells him about the brooch. "Copper's got your share of the loot from Lamm's. We couldn't sell the brooch. The fence said that it belonged to the queen, and has a 1000 GP reward, but he was nervous about visiting the castle. I am, too, but I figure if you and the priestess here come along, they won't question the story we give them about how we found it."

Senjin's eyes bug out a bit at the coin he is offered. He picks up the broach and looks at it, "Not sure she's takin' visitors, but for this....maybe"

Neva smiles slightly at the improved demeanor of Rutter. She can only guess what he’s been up to, but whatever it was, it’s taken a bit of the edge off the halfling. But he still got right down to business. She liked that.

“Good point. Is there someone we know that is a little less lofty than the Queen? They might be a good contact for help with the brooch.”

She mused aloud: “With the Seneschal dead, the other military commanders are Kroft at the guard, Endrin at the Sable Company and DeVri of the Nail. I want nothing to do with the Hellknights, so that leaves Kroft or Endrin. Senjin, what about Commandant Endrin? Do you know him? Can we trust him?”
She paused to go over more names in her head.
“If it isn’t the military, then we can maybe look to the civil government. Magistrate Gar is the only one whose name I’ve heard where it wasn’t preceded by a curse. Does anybody know him?”
She paused again, and an idea came to her.
“Maybe if we can do them a favor, they’d be willing to help us out with the brooch. Just a thought.”

Knowledge Local 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10
Do I know anyone from my workings with the town guard or whoever it was I was working with to find that kid (who I havent forgotten about, btw) at the beginning of the game who might be of help?
Also, if I can use a reroll from Neva, somehow, then I'll do that as well. Knowledge: local 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (2) + 9 = 11

"There was that creepy kid that went to Lamm's with us. But even if she really was with the queen, I wouldn't want her to feel like I owe her one. I'd rather throw this thing into the river."

"Maybe our best bet is to avoid the castle altogether? Maybe we can find a government official who wants to get noticed by the new queen, and can sell him the brooch for 800. That way, he can turn it in for the reward or good will, and we can get most of what it's worth."

"Or..." Rutter starts to chuckle, "we could take it to another government. The thing's probably worth 5000 gold, but nobody here's going to touch it. But maybe maybe another city's king or queen would pay that much for it, either for good will or to spite the new queen of Korvosa." He shrugs. "Or maybe just a fence in another city won't recognize it, and will give us 2 or 3 grand."
