"He took more than a few jabs at me so we know he can't fight so good, but at least he can think, which is good for a scout like him. Train him more, much like we train Quorthos, and you'll have a useful tool on your hands."

Baer follows Eries, still remembering how often Phillip missed stabbing her. It's like he wasn't even trying to hit me...he knew...he knew...

"Eries, what will you do next? Does the plague hold any threat to you?"

Quorthos smiles, shaking his head. Who's training who, Baer? He is secretly thrilled things went so well, and that he took a more active role. It may be going to his head.

"The plague's also harmful to us wereraaats," Eries responds to Baer. "Staying away from the surface has helped us keep stay healthyyy. Only a few of us have become iiill. They slept in separate places till they were feeling better or had diiieeed."

Eries leads you through several sewer tunnels and eventually to one that empties into the Jeggare River, below the Wall of Eodred.

"The night the ship was sunk some of us were watchiiing. Once it sank, strange debris drifted from its huuull. We tracked down some of the flotsam and discovered a few small boxes filled with dead rats and pouches of silver coooins. All of the boxes were conveniently bound to floating timbeeers."

"We felt that something was wrong with the raaats. We have a connection with them, you seeee. The coins also smelled weeeiiird. We kicked the debris back into the river theeen. Now I suspect they were connected to the plaaague."

Eries reaches for something in the water, at the edge of the sewer tunnel. She lifts up the lid of what looks like it was part of the same kind of metal coffer you found inside the sunken ship, and shows it to you.

"Look closelyyy. They filed off imagines off the coffers' liiids. They failed to do so properly with this ooone."

Eries points at a spot on the lid where you can still see the image of a skull.

"I don't know why it's only on this ooone. Possibly the one filing this coffer got distracted and forgot to finish his jooob. Anyway, this kind of coffer with skulls on it is known as a death's head coffeeer. I did some research on them, you seeee."

"Death's head coffers are often engraved with many skulls and allow the safe transport of infectious substanceees. Closing the lid seals in the contents and holds them in stasiiis. So they're rendered immune to aging or any damaaage. In addition, any infectious material—such as the body of a creature that died of disease—is preserved for as long as the coffer is clooosed."

"A death's head coffer can spread infections between iteeems. Any item placed into a coffer with a disease-ridden item becomes infected with the same diseeeaaase. For one week after being removed from the coffer, the newly infected item can spread the same affliction as the disease-ridden item to any creature that touches iiit."

Eries pauses a moment before adding, "It's been about a week since the ship saaank. If the coins were spreading the disease, they should stop doing so in the days to cooome. Yet I'm not sure if that will slow the spread of the disease, as it appears to be very contagiooouuus."

Baer whistles unhappily.

"I have felt the plague...it is annoying and tough to fell. If these coffers are spreading it...that means..." Baer looks around

"...that means I was wrong. It was not the drink."

Baer shakes her head, finally admitting defeat on the issue. She thought she had seen the truth of things, but failed.

"Where...where did coffers come before they came to the boat? And how would we track it back from that?" Baer asks, trying to put the pieces together.

"I have more questions now than before. What do you think, Denario? Tural?"

"The drink being the cause wasn't high on my list of suspects, doesn't travel as fast as coin does."

Denario stares in thought briefly.

"Well, what if we'd ask ourselves, who or what sort of people would be knowledgeable about these sort of chests, have access to them in large numbers?
Who would gain from killing half the city?"

Unless somebody picks up his angle;
"The first i could speculate are the queen's physicians.
The second......no, that wouldn't make much sense....would it...or maybe?"

His eyes go left and right in thought....

"I don't think we should look who has access to these kind of materials, most anyone can obtain such items. I think we should look into who would want the whole city sick. The queen's physicians might be suspects, definitely after what we found on the one earlier."
He looks at Baer in thought.
"If we are able to track down where the ship was made and who it was sold to, maybe that would yield us some information. Did we find any clues or maybe a name on the ship?"
His head turns away in thought again.
"We could try the docks, to see who would be able to build the ship and where it might have come from. Though tracking it down could takes a very long time."

Quorthos listens to the aged wererat's tale, smoldering. This isn't a plague... it's an act of war. But by who?

He lets Baer's admission pass without comment, not wanting to upset her. When Denario mentions the physicians, Quorthos nods his head. "Certainly, they would have access and ability to do this, particularly if some of them worship the mother of disease. Although, they would also be the group to infiltrate if you wanted to do this and pin the blame on others."

"If the Queen's Physicians are involved, we are left in a compromised position. We report to the Field Marshall, who reports to the Queen. This means we are fighting our own allies, or at least a covert group of them. Who can we trust at this point? I haven't worked for Kressida as long as you all - can we got to her with information like this? Will she support us still, or pass the information up the chain and have us arrested?"

Blackjack, where are you now? I know I can trust you to know the right thing for Korvosa...

Baer shakes her head, having not answers to the ones Quorthos poses.

"Well, seems like we should take a bit more time to research the Queen's Physicians, but unsure where to begin with them. It's possible we might kidnap one and see if we can get him to talk. That might be a good next step," Baer grunts, eager to beat the disease from her own system.

"You want to do what? But what if he's innocent?!"
He frowns at Baer, unsure what to think of the bright idea.
"I disagree with that idea, and will not participate..."
After a moment he adds.
"Unless we can prove that he not to be trusted of course. Than it's no more than he deserves."

Denario shares his speculation of the second question..

"The queen has been at the head of rumors and conflict, hasn't she, what if via the physicians, she is connected to this.
Before you dismiss the idea, hear me out on this.
In times of peril or disaster, people usually respect or admire the person behind the solution to their potential imminent death. With her subjects in Korvosa strongly devided, what better way to win the trust of those who don't support her, than to cure the lethal disease that ravages the entire city?"

He waits for the words to sink in.

"Suppose, her physicians have a hand in releasing the plague, they would also hold a potential cure, wouldn't they? When they do cure it, it will unify most people in being thankful for the queen to organize the solution, consolidating power."

"Of course, that is a mere theoretic possibility, but a possibility all the same.
I do agree with Baer, that 'taking aside' one of the physicians is an option that could yield results. We'd disguise ourselves, talk in a gutteral way maybe, but i'd think it an action worth while.
Lives in the entire city are at stake here, i say one man's evening stroll is not worth the many lives potentially saved at a later time. If he is innocent, the only harm done are his nerves. If he is guilty, he'll feel Baer's quarterstaff."

"I understand your concern, Tural, but we're not talking about a minor issue. The entire city is at stake. We have found evidence that at least some Physicians both worship a goddess that spreads disease, and were involved in spreading this plague through the boxes of rats and coins. Either the Physicians have been infiltrated, or ..." He trails off, not having another alternative to suggest.

At Denario's suggestion, Quorthos frowns. "I think you're being a bit paranoid, Den... murdering hundreds of people just to gain some popularity? The plague isn't just affecting the Queen's opponents, everyone is at risk. A plot like that could backfire if it reduced her supporters more than her opponents. Besides,a conspiracy that large would be impossible to hide... wouldn't it?" Hmm... *is* the plague affecting both factions equally?

Mavor kept quiet as the others discussed and rattled his own brain for an answer.

They make good points, but I think Denario is jumping to conclusions a bit fast. It would put the Queen in a bad light if she employs people that started the the plague. Of course she would want it to be kept quiet... Unless the Physicians are operating on their own terms, disguising themselves... We indeed need to get answers, but whom to trust?

"I guess if we go to Old Korvosa I know of a few parts and dark alleys that could make a good ambush spot to kidnap one of the Physicians. Thing is, where do we take one? I reckon there is no love lost between the Citu guard and the Physicians and Kressida seems a reliable friend to us. Though taking one there seems not a wise thing to do. Same goes for the Tavern obviously. Maybe Vencarlo knows a place for us, at least he seemed friendly with BlackJack and willing to help him. We know there is no love at all between Blackjack and the Queen, so maybe Blackjack knows a place where we could question such a Physician without being discovered. We should at least ask Vencarlo about it, he seems good enough to be trusted with this. Of course we should tell Kressida about what we've found, but she might not be able to help us further with any enquiries."

Eries guides you out of the sewer system, leading you to an exit near Vencarlo's Academy.

"If ever you need something, let me knooow. You know how to reach Girrigz, and through him you can reach meee."

On the door of the Academy itself hangs a note that lets you know it's currently closed, but you head to the front door of Vencarlo's house and knock. The door opens not much later and a smiling Vencarlo lets you in. "Good to see you, friends!"

Vencarlo guides you to his living room and offers you seats. Before he also takes a seat he asks, "Can I offer you a drink?"

Once everyone's seated, with or without drink, Vencarlo comes to business. "What can I do for you?"

Vencarlo doesn't miss the hidden question in Quorthos's eyes and nods understandingly. "I don't know how to contact him, but he occasionally contacts me. Though the occasions have grown fewer since there's always someone outside watching my house or Academy..."

"Which brings me to say that I will gladly offer you advice on the course of actions you could take, but I can't assume a very active role. What's more... If you decide to abduct a physician after this visit, and you're caught or seen doing it, that will likely lead to me being arrested in the near future..."

Vencarlo laughs as he moves his arms apart. "And I wouldn't like that!"

He shifts in his seat and continues talking in a more serious tone. "Baer, you mentioned you've obtained the mask of one of the physicians. It can't be too hard for one of you to disguise yourself as a physician and enter the place where they stay, to search their belongings. Or infiltrate them as they go about their daily business and see what exactly it is they do."

"Infiltrating them sounds dangerous," Quorhots muses. "One person alone is in danger if compromised. Can anyone else assume another form?"

Tural adds.
"But I will gladly help guard the house if need arises."

Vencarlo grins bemused at Quorthos's proposal to deal with whoever's watching the house. "If I'd wanted the queen's watchman gone I'd have done it myself. I'll remind you I've been running this fencing school for quite a while. I do, however, wish to avoid giving the queen an excuse to come after me."

He nods at Tural. "If ever the need arises I'll be sure to call upon you. For now, let's avoid unnecessary conflict."

"Now to this plan of infiltrating the physician's... The clothes the physician's wear look rather generic. You can some make-up or whatever to change your looks just in case you have to take the mask off, but you could try mixing with them while they go about their daily duties and wear their masks. It's just a proposal though, and I'm simply throwing it out there."

It's easy enough to find the queen's physicians after you've left Vencarlo's place, as they're still walking around in the quarantined area east of the bridge.

See map if you forgot where that was.

"I can create a fog cloud, or make one of us fly. If we create a distraction and use fog we might be able to all sneak past the guards unnoticed."
Tural says before they head to Quorthos's father.

Baer's hand clench as they are initially thwarted in their attempts.

Why is saving the city so dang hard? Why won't people help?

"If all is on the up-and-up, the guards will be keeping people out to contain the disease. If things are otherwise, they'll be keeping folks out to make sure no one finds out. Either way, we're not getting in the front door. What magical options do we have for sneaking in unobserved?"

Baer snorts.

"The sewers. I bet Eries knows a way in. We'll probably need it in the future too...if this plague doesn't end soon," Baer mentions.

"If you don't want to do that, I can turn myself invisible long enough to get in, but that doesn't help you. Allyph can help others, I suppose. That could work too."

"Either way is fine, both have their ups and downs.
But we'll have to decide, underground unobserved by the guard, yet slower possibly.
Or quicker in obscurity, with visual cover blown as soon as we make our move."

Quorthos slaps his forehead. "Of course, Baer! The sewers. That way we certainly won't be noticed, and it saves our magical resources for whatever we find."

"I agree, let us go find Eries. The sewers sound like our best option."
Tural adds to Quorthos, once everyone is ready he sets out to where they last saw her.

Baer leads the group to where Eries might be found (or one of her ratlings) to see if they can help get the party in.

You head back to the sewer entrance where Eries dropped you off a little earlier, and enter. After walking around for a while you realize why the existence of wererats is only a rumor and not widespread knowledge among the Korvosans. There doesn't appear to be any trace of them.

DC 15 Perception:
You notice some tiny rats that look like they're watching you.
