There are two groups of Gray Maidens in the immediate area. A group of 5, casually shooting the bull after working a long shift at the graveyard wall, and a group of three clearly on guard at the door to the DollHouse.

The two groups are maybe 20' apart. Approaching either group will be noticed by the other group, though they're not likely to care or take much notice.

So, do you approach the on-guard, or the on-break?

Those on break.

Dandi approaches the ones on break, taking time to wander down to the other side of them if possible, so that they are between her and the official group on break.

"H-hello. I was hoping you could help me." She flashes a shy, disarming smile, and practices looking harmless. Her hair, dark nearly to a Chelish Black, sweeps into a soft braid that curls over one shoulder, hiding her scar, though it is nearly non existent. Her clothing is nice, but aged, as if the family has seen nicer days. And really, hasn't everyone? Her ears are rounded via the veil, helping her appear as human as the next person.

I think Fondo was coming with her, but I am uncertain and did not want to speak for him, just in case I was wrong.

You get the attention of the group easily enough. They pay little attention to you, though one does ask your business, "What sort of help do you need?"

Briar, the house does sit on a corner of sorts, and the road follows away in a more or less straight line, but you lose any sight of the house at 120'. The furthest you can be is ~50' and still see the proceedings. Just for fun, give me a perception to see how much of the conversation you can hear at that distance (probably quite a lot!).

She turns to the others blinking a little, as if coming back to herself a bit. "Does this seem right to you? I mean eventually, yes. But here, now?"

Barael nods. "That's why we don't want to kick. That brings the bite. If you think that you can speak with them and convince them to do what we would like them to do, then nudging isn't kicking. And you do have a way with nudging." Barael raises an eyebrow with a light smile. You've nudged Wyrms, what are ants to you, but... ants?

Briar, I thought you wanted to be nonchalant? 'Flying' around on rooftops will be noticed. Those who see you might not care, but someone is bound to see you. Presuming you're 50' away for now, but please make stealth checks if you head to the rafters.

Oh, and with that role, you can hear just fine, though Dandilion and the Gray Maidens are not shouting. Barael doesn't catch the whole conversation, just bits and pieces carried on the wind.

Fondo accompanies Dandi up, counting on her to draw the Maiden out a bit before weaving his story.

At the Maiden's laugh, he gives a dry chuckle that mixes humility, respect, and an attempt at rapport. "Forgive us, er, milady. Our master asked us to deliver a message to her. Lady Sabina was his charge once. He has important information for her regarding... Well, it is a matter for the ears of she whom our queen chose to command her forces. He said Lady Sabina would want to know, but that it is for her ears alone. Do you know of some way we could get message to her?" He looks at the woman's metal helm with just enough deference.

The collective group laughs a little at the pair before them. "You give the message to me, I give it to the sarge here, she gives it to the captain, she gives it to the lieutenant, and so on until someone gives it to Sabina."

Another quips up, "Or you could just go to the castle and request an audience." - which garners a few chuckles as well.

Mirth spent, the sergeant (or at least someone of higher rank than the other four) speaks up, "That's your best bet actually. You want to talk to Sabina, go to the castle, but I warrant you'll get a chilly reception there. There are many rebels who would love to get alone time with Sabina if you know what I mean. She's well protected that our city may survive the recent troubles."

Charlie’s scry… works! Charlie’s message… works!

He whispers a hello to Sabina and there is a little confusion at first as she believes he is Togomor, the Queens wizard and seneschal of Korvosa. That is sorted out quickly and Sabina grows quiet and uneasy. She is indoors during this scry, having a light breakfast at a desk piled high with maps of the city and other documents.

Charlie, as per his plan, acts as a mouthpiece for Vencarlo who speaks directly to Sabina and speaks from the heart. He entreats her to stop supporting the now obviously evil Queen. He speaks of her skill at arms and the beauty of her maneuvers and how that reflects an inner soul also beautiful and with a purity all her own.

He outlines the Queen’s crimes - her horrendous treatment of prisoners, the withholding of the cure from elements of the populous, the declaration of martial law and all the criminal activity going on under those auspices. He speaks openly about the Queen’s evil. He also talks about the dismantling of the cities defenses, the disbanding of the Sable Marines, the gutting of the Guard, the tearing down of the tallest military structure in the city. He fails to mention her dress however in his haste.

He wonders idly at what the Queen may have planned - what evils does Sabina herself know about that cannot be spoken of.

There is a pause, and Sabina seems unlikely to speak at first, but in the end she relents - and defends her Queen! In her tirade back at Vencarlo - her former trainer - she speaks even of the love and devotion the Queen shows her. She talks about the good things the Queen has done - some of which are things the party did, but the Queen now takes credit for (in particular the curing of the plague).

As she goes on and on, Charlies high Sense Motive reveals something clearly, Sabina is under the effects of an enchantment of some kind. She herself may not believe all the things she is saying, but there is a power speaking through her. A power that is controlling her.

When it becomes clear that simple communication will not win the day, Charlie ends the scry and looks to Vencarlo. Vencarlo looks tired, worn through. Charlie notices fresh injuries on the poor man who explains, ”It was a long night. I’ll be fine after I see the priests.”

"It is hard to see a protege like this. Know this though. She is under the Queen's magical control and we will see to it that she will be free. Free of it by magic, not by force."

Charlie shares what is found during the scry with the party.

Vencarlo is about 80hp down and could use ~2 lessor restorations (5 str damage and fatigue). Use whatever resources you wish to heal him.

I think a dispel magic will work?

I'd rather bring her to our side without attacking her, if we can."

Charlie would know that it should work with a little luck.

However, Break Enchantment will work even better - though it too requires some luck. It will at least affect every effect on Sabina while Dispel Magic will tear them down one at a time...

Couldn't finish the job though as he was run off by a squad of Gray Maidens at the moment of triumph, but Trifaccia can be beaten. "Don't you have better things to do with your time than spar with me? I know I do. Now that I am rested, I have another full day's activities working with the nobles. Then another night of combat and further work."

He puts his hand on the rapier at his waist, partially drawing it in a friendly fashion. "And has it ever hurt to bandy blades with one's true friends, in preparation for a fight? Or did your students merely sit around the school, learning from charts?" He gives a goofy grin that's clearly meant as friendly jest, not a true insult.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Vencarlo smiles, "That is a difference between you and I Fondo my friend. You are yet preparing for a fight. I'm already in one."

"If you'll excuse me, I have some nobles to convince of the Queen's treachery. Let me know if I can help any further."

Vencarlo bows and walks down to the tunnel and into the Vaults heading to the finer houses on the 'slopes.

"Wouldn't you be willing to ask Sabina to meet us first? Or just tell her we that we are going to assault her guardhouse at an appointed hour? That might draw her out. Unless we are willing to storm the castle, this plan might go no where."

I believe there is one, possibly two, scrolls of Wind Walk still in the party. Remember Laori cast the Wind Walk that took you back to Kaer Maga from Scarwall so your return trip scrolls were not used.

As for Sabina meeting the party somewhere, Charlie thinks that's unlikely given the way she was talking through the scry. It is possible she'd meet you to fight you - but she'd bring every available weapon to that fight, she would not underestimate you. So drawing her out will mean her plus who knows who or what else. I think. You may have a better plan than I can think of at the moment. :)

Korvosa does get some fog from time to time - usually in the early morning. It's still fairly early, so it's possible you could be taken for a few wisps of morning fog. Not a great chance, but not nothing either.

Were there windows in her office, through which a cloud might pass?"

He shrugs slightly, not wanting to be a killjoy. "In any case, methinks to teleport would be a quicker, more surprising entry, no? Flying, man-shaped clouds might still the guard forewarn. "The castle really holds all of our focus. It contains Sabina. Togomor walks the halls, as does Mantis, likely. If we hit Sabina's office, and can secure her assistance, won't her office become a staging ground for our assault? Does the thing enchanting her stand a chance of understanding the moment in which the enchantment is lifted? Or might she be able to go about her business for the better part of the day, before raising alarms?" Barael eases up, trying to look a couple of moves ahead on the chess board, but getting frustrated with the complexity.
