Vallaki for me - sounds more cheery than something named after a Raven.

December 26th Update

Sorry to take on more players before getting smacked with the holidays.

With that decision made, you all head west and pass through what appear to be another set of gates to Barovia. They are ust as looming and decrepit as ever.

The Old Svalich Road transitions here from being a winding path through the Balinok Mountains to a lazy trail that hugs the mountainside as it descends into a fog-filled valley. In the heart of the valley, through a brief parting of the mists as the sun exerts its will, you see a walled town near the shores of a great mountain lake, its waters dark and still. A branch in the road leads west to a promontory, atop which is perched a dilapidated stone windmill, its warped wooden vanes stripped bare.

The onion-domed edifice leans forward and to one side, as though trying to turn away from the stormy grey sky. You see grey brick walls and dirt-covered windows on the upper floors. A decrepit wooden platform encircles the windmill above a flimsy doorway to the building's interior. Perched on a wooden beam above the door is a raven. It hops about and squawks at you, seemingly agitated.

Insight DC 12:

Yeah, that raven is trying to warn you not to go anywhere near this place.

From the windmill, the sweet smell of pastries blends horribly with an unknown stench that burns your nostrils.

You are still far enough away that the windmill can be avoided altogether, should you wish to simply continue your journey to the walled city. Enough daylight remains for you to investigate the windmill, should you so choose, and still get to the city well before dusk.

December 26th Update

I may have not indicated as such, but you can continue down the road and avoid this place if you'd like.

Human Cleric 5

You did. Apparently my group isn't too wise. Old crows warning you off of going someplace is a good sign not to go there.

"Very well, then. Perhaps we should put it to a vote? I am definitely opposed to going. Anyone else?"

Galador guffaws and claps Victor on the shoulder. "Then methinks we could please all parties. Let us look around, and THEN set it on fire! You see, dear Sheva? Everybody wins!

But yes, with any luck there will be a family of goblins or a clutch of kobolds thirsting for our blood. With all we've been through such a familiar, understandable foe will be as cool water and sweet wine to me.

Alas, Gastin, you are outvoted! Do not despair, I shall make all efforts to leave your bird-friend alive. Probably."

Brooking no more delays, Galador clamps his helm down, hefts his shield high, and tromps toward the mill.

Casdin thanks the bird and then follows along behind the group.

December 26th Update

Hope everyone had a Good Christmas

Galador's greetings sound out in his boisterous voice, only to drift off into silence.

A moment passes.

A second moment.

The door opens with a long *creeeeeaaaaak*

A haggard, heavyset old woman with a face as wrinkled as a boiled apple smiles as she sees the visitors in front of her. She wears a bloodstained, flour caked apron. A long, sharp bodkin impales her bundled-up mount of gray hair.

"Hello dearies..." she says, her mouth opening into a wide, toothy grin.

"Have you come to buy some pastries?"

Human Cleric 5

Sheva nudges past Galador to greet the old woman,

"We're ... uh, we're weary travellers and ... yes! I believe we'd like to buy some pastries and perhaps if we could trouble you for a bit of your time and some shelter from the outdoors. It's been a long and cold night, seemingly never-ending to be honest, and we'd love to take a moment to warm up and partake in your delectables! They... they sure smell delicious!"

Sheva hopes nobody sees her hold back a gag reflex.

"And while we're at it, my good friend here (pointing to Casdin) would love to tell you all about his loving and caring deity, H҉̀͡͝a̧̨͘͝r̷͏ŗ̵ų̧͞͝m̡͏̨p̴̷̨̡̕h̡̢̀͜u҉̡g҉̨̧͝ų͡͏m̛͡҉̸̴p͜͏̷͢h̨̧̡̢. Perhaps you've heard the good news of 'He who is kind and loving and certainly doesn't devour souls'?"

Boy yin and yang there eh?

December 26th Update

The woman looks a bit annoyed that people knocked on her door and started asking if she'd like to hear the good news (but to be fair, almost anyone would have been annoyed).

Victor doesn't sense much wrong with the situation, and curiously peers into the room behind the woman. The ground floor has been converted into a makeshift kitchen, but the room is filthy. Baskets and old dishware are piled everywhere. Adding to the clutter is a peddler's cart, a chicken coop, a heavy wooden trunk, and a pretty wooden cabinet with flowers painted on its doors. In addition to hearing the clucking of chickens, you hear toads croaking.

The sweet smell of pastries blends horridly with a stench that burns your nostrils. The awful odor comes out of an open, upright barrel in the center of the room.

Warmth issues from a brick oven against one wall, and a crumbling staircase ascends the wall across from it. Shrieks and cackles from somewhere higher up cause the old mill to shudder.

"If you aren't here to buy pastries, then begone with you!" the old woman snaps.

Vasilios stands two or three steps behind, carefully considering the situation.

Sheva also whispers her concerns to Galador.

"There's something definitely not right about this place. That smell. And the shrieks. We need to get in there."

Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16

To the old woman again, with a fake grin, "We'd certainly love to purchase some of your pastries. I've heard such great things about them! May we step inside and see how these wonders are made?"

Liberty's Edge

Init:+0 Perc: +4 | Insp = Yes! Human Artificer 2| AC:17 | HP: 19/19 | 1st: 2/2 2nd: 0/0 |

Galador nods at both Victor's and Sheva's words. Such similar council from two level heads certainly mean that some evil is afoot!

Galador tires of this game. To be barred from a source of evil by a single old crone galls him mightily. Ever since he's come this place he's had nothing but bad luck and met with bad manners, and his battle-heart shrieks for catharsis.

Keeping a fake smile on his face, but with the body langues of a crashing bolder, he advances on the threshold. "Ah, but come, come, would you not at least show us some courtesy, kind grandmother? We are hungry and cold from the road and would perchance be more loose with our coin could we but be embraced with the warmth of thine hearth and the sweet, sweet sight of the goods that thou dost offer!

Truly I beg thy pardon, but I'm chilled to the bone and--harken, what is that? Is there some emergency in thine rafters? Sound like some cat or bird is cought and in pain. Let us offer aid if we can!"

Galador speaks as softly as he can, but nothing short of an armored foe will keep the BattleMaster from gaining entry, taking a closer look at the interior of the place, and seeing to the cause of that unruly cacophony coming from rafters.

Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23

Victor reaches forward to stop Galador but he is not fast enough... His face drops. He is going in there!

Victor twirls the torch with his right hand and loosens the bond on his sword sheath with his other hand holding his position near the back, for now.

Human Cleric 5

Casdin just shakes his head and waits to see what becomes of his new companion.

December 26th Update

The old hag grins, and the wood of the door frame beneath her hand seems to crack and break as her seemingly weak grip begins to tighten.

"If you haven't come to buy pastries, then off with you. I have no time to humor such frivolous requests. Others will pay, and pay gladly."

She speaks slowly, methodically, and the gleeful shrieking and cacophonous cackling seem to echo loudly.

"Leave." she finishes flatly.

"Of course we want to buy some pastries. Didn't you hear us? We've heard great things about them! Why, I would kill to have one!"

She leans in and drops the coins into the kitchen, making it look as accidental as possible.

"Oops. Silly me. I'm so clumsy sometimes."

Human Cleric 5

"Apologize for our forthrightness, but to put it delicately we smell something odd in your home and are concerned that you may have harmed others or might be in danger yourself. Galador plunges head first after the coins, barreling over any who get in the way. Any time he gets close to a coin he "accidentally" kicks it farther into the mill.

When he gets close to the stinking barrel he peers in, anxious to have at least that mystery solved.

Galador brazenly makes his way past the woman at the entrance, to satisfy the ravenous curiosity that scrapes at his mind. As he reaches the stinking barrel, he peers inside to find a glistening greenish-black liquid. He also notices something else, as his eyes wonder the floor.

Bones.

Human bones.

Small human bones.

A deafening thud resounds throughout the room, as the woman slams the door shut and places and hand upon it, arcane symbols glowing on both sides of the now shut door. Her eyes gleam with sadistic glee.

"Bella! Offalia!" she calls out, a small chuckle in her throat.

"It seems we will be having a guest for dinner!"
