December 26th Update

Sheva and Vasillios end up on the ground, the latter on top of the former. The darkness remains on top of them as Sheva has taken no damage. Sheva can see, but Vasillios can't through the magical darkness.

Any attack into the darkness has a 50% miss chance (roll a 1d10, 1-5 means you miss) and as long as Vasillios is on top of Sheva you have a 50% chance to hit him as well with the same attack at half damage (roll a 1d10, 1-5 means Vasillios takes half damage).

Razz is up, followed by Galador.

As Raz charges in to the sphere of blackness, Galador seethes in confusion. His sword gripped tightly in his hand, he calls out, "Blast it all, we're as like to harm each other as her in that infernal darkness! Drag her out of there so our options become more plain."

Razz Miss chance: 1d10 ⇒ 5

Though Impressive as hell, Razz is practically sure that he has someone in his grasps, yet, when his fingers squeeze he comes up empty in the middle of the darkness.

Sheva's rapier lashes him in the darkness, the pain almost amplified by the darkness. And though you knew you didn't want Sheva as an enemy, this situation is a perfect example.

Grappling rules are really only skill contests in 5e. I'm just altering the rules a bit since darkness is in play and Sheva can see in the darkness.

Sheva, you only need to roll concentration when you take damage.

Vasillios is up, followed by Razz.

I was thinking about the disadvantage thing but, in any case, her first roll was a 14, so it wouldn't have mattered (since advantage and disadvantage would have cancelled each other).

December 26th Update

So...I've learned it isn't a good idea to update a 5e game after updating several Pathfinder Games. Get's the rules mixed up a bit.

Let's see...Alright. For now, we'll say Razz's previous grapple attempt succeeds and she now has the grappled condition. I'll update statuses as I see them now. Please speak up if you think I have something wrong.

Sheva: Prone, Grappled, Can see in darkness. Sheva cannot move until ungrappled, Sheva has advantage fighting blind opponents in her darkness, disadvantage because she is prone, opponents ranged attacks are at disadvantage against her, and opponents melee attacks have advantage against her..

Razz: Within darkness, Grappling Sheva. Can move Sheva forcefully at half speed with no save to Sheva until ungrappled.Disadvantage on attacks while blinded in darkness.

Vasilios: Prone, Blinded, essentially right next to Sheva, not grappling. Disadvantage on attack rolls, Disadvantage on attack rolls against him.

Galador: Not much going on...

See how this can get confusing? And I think I still missed some things.

December 26th Update

Sheva can still attack normally while grappled, but she has to use an standard action to try and do so. Unless she succeeds, the only penalty for her while grappled is that her speed is reduced to zero.

Grappling requires the use of at least one free hand, so as long as your spells don't require the use of both hands, I'm sure its fine. Also, the only thing that provokes opportunity attacks in 5e is moving out of a threatened space so casting a spell is fine. Ranged attacks in melee range are at disadvantage.

Moving a grappled creature with you requires no save and is only a move action so Razz would still have a standard and minor.

December 26th Update

Technically, Razz still has a standard to cast a spell before being followed up by Sheva's attack.

This is the situation.

Razz has his turn. He can move Sheva out of the darkness and also cast a spell.

Galador has a readied standard action, though according to the rules I believe he has to declare what that action is, but we'll give him a pass right now.

Sheva has already declared her action, and we'll factor that in later.

So....

Razz moves out of darkness,
Galador has one standard action to use,
Razz finishes his turn with his standard action,
Sheva's turn which she has already posted (if not negated by Galador and Razz)
Galador's actual turn,
Vasillios's turn.

Sound good? Galador, I need your action and Razz what spell are you using?

"Someone get a gag for her mouth. I've no wish to listen to -either- of her when she wakes up from this...be she still bespelled or no."

December 26th Update

Eventually, Sheva wakens to find that she is indeed bound and gagged.

Sheva:

You are still under Strahd's influence. However, it could be reasoned by Strahd's words that you only needed to attempt to kill him the one time, or it could be interpreted to keep trying to kill Galador. Your choice.

As the rest of the party stand around the now tightly restrained Sheva, a heavyset man emerges from the door, his broken spirit showing through the expression on his face. This man is apparently Donovich, the priest who should perform rites for the Ismark and Ireena's late father. A broken man, on the verge of weeping.

"She was not sent by the Gods to save my son...?" he asks, his voice so defeated that its clear he knows the answer already.

But here, the devil are you on about? We've only just arrived and have been...heavily engaged in those few moments.

If you will but tell us of you and what laments your son, we shall certainly give it heed...

...though as far as offering assistance, we seem to short of that particular coin."

"Father! I'm starving!"

In fear, the priest turns back and starts stamping on the wooden floor of the chapel.

"Resist it my son! Resist it!"

He turns back to face you, fresh tears streaming from his face once more. He pulls a silver golbet from his side pouch and drinks heavily. From the scent and color, it seems to be wine.

"My son....he has been....tainted....please save him. I will give you all I have."

The moment gone, he regains a more stoic composure. "Aye, remember we are but newly come. What hath he been tainted by? And how might he be saved?

Of note, if you know of no way in which to save his body, we must needs consider saving his soul, and destroying the body before the spirit has been fully corrupted by the spreading evil.

...or, at least, that seems to be an option, here, in this land.

Just saying...."

December 26th Update

The father takes a moment to catch his breath, and this time is able to give you a decent amount of information.

"My son....the foolish boy, he had thoughts of a free Barovia, one not shackled in darkness. There was a wizard, a mighty one who's magic's were said to rival Strahd's strength. My boy followed him along with other Barovians in an attempted coup."

Donovich pauses, again, once again taking a large sip from the goblet, the purple liquid sloshing over his clothing.

"But the wizard failed, and my son returned.....a monster."

Tell me if Sheva stays outside with someone, is left on the first floor, etc?

He leads you all inside, and takes you downstairs. A frightened boy looks as if he's about to attack, but seeing so many of you and so well armed, he flees the the back of the room. A lit torch illuminates the darkness and shows with certainty that the boy has been turned into some sort of vampiric spawn, his features slightly demonic if it weren't for the pain and sadness on his face.

"I can smell your blood!" he shrieks, as he scurries from side to side, as if trying to see if there was some way past your group.

Though Galador seems ready to take the creature's life, the father quickly grasps his wrist.

"Please do not kill him. Perhaps he can still be saved..."

December 26th Update

Donovich leads you all out of the undercroft and back to the first floor. He makes sure the entrance is locked tight, and turns to you all.

"If you can save my son, you would my eternal gratitude. But to the matters at hand..."

He approaches the makeshift coffin and places and hand on it gently.

"May you rest in peace Burgomaster. Your adopted daughter shall be safe if I can help it."

He turns back to you all.

"I am not aware if you have tried to leave this land, but you will find quickly that you are stuck in Barovia. The great gates will not open unless Strahd commands it, and the mists that run through the thick forests will lead you in twists and turns. You only chance of escape is to slay Strahd.."

It is still night, and as Donovich leads you outside to conduct the funeral rites, you are all shocked to see veritable army of pale, ghostly forms march from the grave onto the road, and off into the distance. You see their swords, staves, drums, guns, rapiers, staves, animals, axes, and all manner of weapons and armor.

"If you should fail...then your fate will most likely be like them, doomed to have their soul remain in Barovia forever, desperately playing over the scenes of your failure for all eternity."

The funeral rites are simple, and with the late Burgomaster laid to rest, Donovich offers his silver goblet to Galador.

"The only possession of value I have, once brought to your lips will let you drink deeply of wine. Not the best kind, but the alchohol is real. Perhpas you'll need it. I recommend you take her to the Abbey of Saint markovia in Krezk. Should that fail, then the fortified town of Vallaki."

Let us head off there, with an eye toward Vallaki. No doubt any town that is now fortified must too be populated by those of sound mind, such as the case is.

December 26th Update

And so you set off when the sun rises. The road is rough and cracked along its sides, and there's no telling how long it has been since someone's come out to repair it.

Eventually you pass over a river (the River Ilvis) and pass over without incident over a stone bridge. The river flows as clear as a blue winter sky through the valley.

An old wooden gallows creaks in a chiill wind that blows down from the high ground to the west. A frayed length of rope dances from its beam. The well-worn road splits here, and a signpost opposite the gallows points off in three directions: BAROVIA VILLAGE to the east (where you came from), TSER POOL to the north west, and RAVENLOFT/VALLAKI to the southwest. You are currently travelling west when you met this fork.

The Northwest fork slants down and disappears into the trees, while the southwest fork clings to an upward slope. Across from the gallows, a low wall, crumbling in places, paritally encloses a small plot of graves shrouded in fog.

"It wouldn't be a bad idea to stop by the Tsar Pool for a rest. There's fresh water and all." Ismark suggests.

Sheva:

For all intents and purposes, I'll end Strahd's control of you now. You are free of his influence but remember everything. Enjoy.

Vasilios:

A crawling chill runs over you as the dead body looks like exactly like you

Everyone else:

The corpse is an unfamiliar Barovian, but it looks and smells real.

-------Later-------

The road gradually disappears and is replaced by a twisted, muddy path through the trees. Deep ruts in the earth are evidence of the comings and goings of wagons.

The canopy of mist and branches suddenly gives way to black clouds boiling far above. There is a clearing here, next to a river that widens to form a small lake several hundred feet across. Five colorful round tents, each ten feet in diameter, are pitched outside a ring of four barrel-topped wagons. A much larger tent stands near the shore of the lake, its sagging form lit from within. Near this tent, eight unbridled horses drink from the river.

The mournful strains of an accordion clash with the singing of several brightly clad figures around bonfire. A footpath continues beyond this encampment, meandering north between the river and forest's edge.

"Told you it was popular," Ireena says as he hefts down his backpack and makes his way to the river to get some fresh water.
