Moments earlier...

Ophiuchus:
"Oh, ye gods! You've been hit. Get back here," squeals a shocked Merian, "Let the big brute and the angry one deal with this... oh, my, you're bleeding. No, don't reach for that flail. You will not be racing in and fighting this one. I forbid it!"

Merian grabs onto the flail with all her (insignificant) might and will not let go.

With that piece of information, Trask has all he needs to act. "Sorry, Rudi, but we need a more... forceful approach, I think."

He pulls "Poochie" out of the way and yells through the crack in the door, "Roldare! You put that crossbow down this minute, and pull the damned barricade away from this door right now. You shot at my friend," he thinks that may have a been a mistake to say, for other reasons, " and he is gravely wounded. The only reason that I am not chopping this door down right now is that he says that you are a friend of his. You have until the count of five."

'Sven' looks startled as the crossbow bolt hits 'Poochie', then stares at the man in bewilderment at his almost incoherent soliloquy.

Snapped out of his trance by Hamilton, he prepares to assist the brash man, getting his feet planted for a forceful kick at the door if and when the time comes.

Alas, but Roundantaimi's efforts at diplomacy are for naught. The insensible man starts muttering to himself as he reloads his crossbow, "Friends, eh? I saw what you did to my friends, well not me. Not me not me not me not me not me not me not me not me. I'll show you, I'll show you all. *sob* I won't fall for your tricks. Oh, no. Not me. From the village, they say. Well which village? Village of the damned? Ha! They won't get me. Not me. Not me not me not me..."

Hamilton Trask tries a different tactic, and flat out yells the poor man into submission. For a moment, all is silence. Roldare looks as though he were a child who had just had a bad fall and was about to burst into tears at any minute once the situation became apparent to him. Instead, he calmly stands up, moves the table out of the way and flings the door wide.

"WELL FUÇKING KILL ME THEN!!!" Roldare wails as he throws himself on the ground. Gradually, his screams become sobs and then his sobs become those tiny little involuntary hiccups that people sometimes get after bawling their eyes out for a long time. He finally sits up and peers at the assembled group before him, realizing that they have not come here to kill him after all. A spark of recognition even lights up his face a little when he glances at those of the group who have spent longer in Kassen.

"So *hic* you've come here to *hic* complete the quest, then? The flame that *hic* burns for me, will also *hic* burn you! Beware! The spirit of *hic* Ekat Kassen has been angered and *hic* the dead walk again. The abyss *hic* opens wide to swallow you all. Even you *hic*, Tabitha. Even you."

Roldare oscillates between lucidity and utter insanity. Jaender recognizes "Tabitha" as the name of Roldare's long dead pet cat.

Roldare looks down at Jaender. Roldare's eyes meet his eyes for a good long while. His expression softens and he concentrates, his brow furrowing as he taps his memory for information. The companions even grow quite hopeful that Roldare will shed some light on the recent events in the crypt. Then he speaks.

”Well *hic* you see, the dead rose and attacked. All were killed. All except me, me and *hic* Dimira, my sister. She agreed to come with us *hic* when the mayor asked. It would be fun, I said. She was too young last time. This time she decided to come with her big brother to prepare the crypt. Oh, but the neighing of the horses outside. Hungry skeletons. *hic* They didn’t eat the horses, oh no, their hunger is for something else.” Roldare’s mind is clearly fractured, and the assembled group gets the impression that he is reliving these moments as he tells them.

”The voice!” Roldare screams after a long pause, "*hic* A voice of death and walks the halls in ancient mail. Oh, he talks does that one. Death, death, death is his voice. Not like the others, the silent dead, oh, this one was given voice that he might tell of his discontent *hic*

Roldare seems to shrink and grow afraid, ”Such a beautiful girl, my sister. Laughter ever on her lips. *hic* But the voice took her. You quest for the Everflame, and we made this place safe for you! *hic* Pillows in the holes, blunt arrows in the scatter column… and pillows, always pillows… *hic* for the dead will have no rest without them. *hic* A key in the depths, and more than that besides. In the back it must go, or 'Oh No No’! We’ll do the lower levels tomorrow, but there the dead have risen. *hic* Won’t go back there, no. They came while we slept. Came from below.

”I won’t go, I can’t,” says Roldare, his hiccups abating at last, ”But you can, and you must! Dimira is there. The voice has her now, and she has no secret room to hide her like her brother. Oh, no. I keep here safe for her return. Left the coins and the note in the middle pit in case the young fools can’t figure it out. But you did, you did! And now you are here, and she is there.

”We padded the gauntlet for you, but I don’t think we finished. Not lazy, just tired. Sorry. Mind the last! Mind the last! Kassen’s guardian stands of wood. Take his shields and use them well! Or you could always try the key! Ha ha!"

Roldare’s babbling becomes ever worse, and the companions are able to get nothing more from the poor man. With some long term care, though, his fractured mind may be mended. Critical to that will be retrieving his sister.

The above is by far and away the most coherent account of what happened you can extract from the man. Any further attempts end in frustration for you, and an ever more upset and frightened Roldare. The only way to get him out of that room is by force, but he says he will leave with his sister. "One way or another," he says ominously.

So, what door would you like to try next? Lower west door or upper west door are your options from the maze area, or back up to the room with the water that Roundantaimi saw.

If this doesn't get me in, I don't want to be in." He says, even more resolutely now than before.

"Roldare my broken friend, lets leave you barricaded in this room. Don't answer the door for anything unless they tell you they are the emissaries of Kassan. Do you understand? Emissaries of Kassan. Do not unbarricade this door for anything else? We will retrieve your sister. Now, is there anything in this room that can help us?"

Jaender will go about the room, looking for anything that may be useful before helping Roldare settle in and instructing him how to reset the barricade, or lock the door if that is an option. Once that is set,

Aplologies for the lack of roleplay, about to take off. Nothing of use in the room that Roldare isn't using. In the center of this room is a large pool of clear water, fed by a fountain on the wall above it. The fountain has a stone statue of a weeping maiden holding the slain body of Kassen, but his head has been broken off and is nowhere to be seen. A voice booms out from the darkness, saying, “Magic is the key.” The voice slowly fades, leaving a dreadful silence.

The doors leading out of this chamber are locked and extremely difficult to open.

Bringing some magical light on the situation, the group sees about a hundred identical keys at the bottom of the 40 ft deep pool.

Map updated.

Rules-wise: A creature can swim half its speed up or down with a DC 10 Swim check as a full-round action. Characters carrying a medium or heavy load can automatically descend 10 feet per round without making a swim check.

As Ophiuchus concentrates on the keys, he does indeed notice a magical emanation from the bottom of the pool. After a few moments zeroing in on the aura, Ophiuchus sees that one key in particular is responsible. This key is not in any particular special spot, and seems to have just been thrown into the pool with the rest of the keys.

With detect magic active, Ophiuchus (or any other character with the spell) could dive down and grab the key using the rules above for descending in the water or some other mechanism. If Ophiuchus would like to explain to someone else where the key is, it will be a DC 15 intelligence check for both characters.

So if I may just stand on this soap box for a second - riddles are so pedestrian in fantasy novels. Just because Tolkien was AWESOME doesn't meat every module writer needs to include a riddle, i.e. see Trial by Machine I mean they might have well have said that one of these keys has a broken wing.

So metawise - I can strip off my armor and I have a +3 swim check, should take 5 rounds to descend (factoring in a miss), or I can keep it on (prefer that since I am close to death ;) you can load me up with debris from around and I can have a medium load, tie some ropes around me, once I have the key I will drop the debris, and then you all can pull me up when I yank on the rope. Is there a DC for that - Strength?

This will be fun to roleplay through Ophiuchus' eyes

I don't mind riddles so much, especially if they're obvious like this one. Breaks up the combat a little. Anyway, that strategy (with the armor) will work a treat. No rolls nexessary, and you have enough CON to make it without difficulty. Going for that?

Hmmm, Merian what would a hero do? What would Mr. Task do? Here I stand, close to death, but I must be a hero for the man that has a sister that might be alive. I will get this key for us friends.
Here, small man that knows many languages, hold my flail, it kills dead things that live. And here, hold my shield, it protects me from crazy men who shoot arrows at me. I will take this sword, in case more dead things that live want to kill me."

Ophiuchus thrusts his flail and shield to Roudantaimi before rambling on.

"Mr. Trask, man with wolf, large man with the beautiful singing voice, can you rescue me in case I get into trouble? Can you pull me up with ropes? I do not want to stay down there. I want to go down fast and come up fast. Merian, what would make me go down fast?"

The adventures feel as if someone is watching them. A slight tingling on their back, a second sense that causes them to peer to and fro continuously.

"Yes Merian, that is a good plan. Strong friends, not you little friend who looks at stars and burps fire, can you get me stones to hold so that I can swim down faster? I will let them go, then I will tug on the rope for you to come get me. Please pull me up fast, I am afraid of the dark."

So I need like a 20 lb stone or something to make Medium load.

Sure that the SE door is secure, Trask moves over to the SW door, directing everyone where to stand (he is still channeling his own drill sergeant and squad leader, and apparently he's never seen a lightning bolt or fireball). If we are out of light, again, he'll ask one of the casters to cast Light on his helmet.

The Executioner is in one, hand, and he opens the door with the other (putting his hand back on his weapon as soon as the door is open). Once he can see what's there, he takes a step forward into the room.

The lad, 'Sven', has no real preference for doors, so he follows Trask to the SW door, creeping right behind him, ready to come to the man's aid if needed. Truthfully, the young man was starting to enjoy himself. This sure beat sowing fields and harvesting.

The adventurers bravely open the unlocked southwestern door and see a corridor stretch out before them. Map updated.

This long corridor is flanked by a row of human statues, set into alcoves on each side. The statues look like Kassen, and each one holds a longsword out in front of it. The blades of roughly half the statues are wrapped in leather padding.

The first four statues have swords that are are all neatly wrapped up (as though to deal nonlethal damage). The remainder are bare (lethal damage).

Perception rolls:

Only get to make these when the light source is within 20 ft of the thing these relate to.

Hamilton perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17
Jaender perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18
Ophiuchus perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
Roundantaimi perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22
Strong Brute perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23
Vox perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21
Einhardt perception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6

Seeing nothing, Hamilton Trask cautiously leads the adventurers down the hall. Not long after entering, Strong Brute notices the pressure plate (marked "T" on the map), and shouts out a timely warning.

Jaender assist disable device: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20
Hamilton disable device: 1d20 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 8 + 2 = 21

With help from Jaender, Trask is able to rig the pressure plate to stay in place and allow even the strong brute to stand upon it without causing the statues' swords to swing down and attack all who stand before them.

Jiggling the handle a little, Trask discovers that the door at the southernmost part of the statued hallway is not locked.

I've updated your positions to what would have made sense given the above actions. Back to marching order again and through the door?

We padded the gauntlet for you, but I don’t think we finished. Not lazy, just tired. Sorry. Mind the last! Mind the last!

Trask opens the door which creaks ominously. Caution ever his watchword, Trask steps forward carefully, allowing the light to slowly illuminate more and more of the room. At the dim edge of the spell's glow, Hamilton spies a huge (large) wooden statue.

One half of this lofty chamber has a lowered floor, with stairs on either side to reach the bottom. Standing opposite the door is a tall wooden statue of Kassen grasping a gigantic wooden shield in each hand. One of the shields is inscribed with the word “home,” while the other reads “family.”

The statue is immobile, and no amount of waiting in the entry way causes it to move or reveals any more about this statue or the room.

It is a 10ft drop to the floor if you choose not to descend via the stairs. Please describe what you are doing and update your positions on the map or describe what you do in the room.

"Well. standing here ain't helping!

I assume the statue is the 10X10 dais?

Trask moves up to the statue, taking the stairs. "The lunatic said to 'take the shields and use them well.' No, I didn't mean you, Poochie. I wonder if he meant that literally?" The slayer stands there, looking at the statue, trying to decide if the shields can be removed, and if they are the right size for the humans (and others) in the group to use.

Correct!

The shields appear to be held by their straps onto the statue. Trask estimates that they would be relatively easy to remove (ie. they are real shields and not part of the statue itself). For the statue, they appear as though they're slightly long large-sized shields, but closer inspection reveals them to be medium-sized tower shields.

Hamilton, going to ask you to just hang tight for a moment while some of the others give me an update on what they do.

The large man follows directly behind Trask, giving the statue little heed. He was only used to the flesh-and-blood type enemy, so expected little trouble from a mere piece of stone.

Jaender moves into the room, following the large men. Seeing Trask move down to remove the shields, Jaender starts to follow, to see if there is a way he can help, despite his short stature.

"I could hide behind those standing up! Ha ha" He says with a light smile. "Let me know if I can help somehow, I doubt I can lift them, but I could climb up on top of that thing if you needed me to..."

Hamilton Trask alights the staircase, stepping straight towards the wooden statue of Ekat Kassen. He is in the process of assessing the shields when there is a loud "click" that echoes throughout the room. The staircases effectively become large slides as the steps rotate 45º to trip up Strong Brute and Jaender.

Strong Brute acrobatics: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21
Jaender acrobatics: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10

The strong brute leaps up and easily slips down the freshly formed slide to alight at the bottom. Not nearly so graceful, Jaender nevertheless manages to remain steady. Ophichius looks on, grateful that he was not yet on the stairs when they flipped over.

As they steady themselves, the companions notice to their horror that the statue of the town hero has animated!

Rolls:
Stealth: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10

Hamilton perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10
Jaender perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14
Ophiuchus perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3

Vox perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11
Einhardt perception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

A different Hamilton perception check, DC 15: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15

Hamilton initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11
Jaender initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
Ophiuchus initiative 1: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18 | Ophiuchus initiative 2: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16
Roundantaimi initiative: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
Strong Brute initiative: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
Vox & Einhardt initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16

Golem initiative: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (16) + 0 = 16

Ophichius, Roundantaimi and Einhardt are taken completely unawares as the statue animates. The others were luckily a little more alert and on edge. As the golem moves to attack, Hamilton notices a small key hole in the back of the golem - such as would fit the magical key you just found.

Up next: Vox!

Inserting the key in the golem's back: Will require two successive grapple checks. Once the golem is grappled, it is a second grapple check to put the key in. This can be done by separate character's (one to "hold" him down, the other to insert key).

Removing one of the shields: Can be done with a successful disarm combat maneuver.

Getting down to the lower level: Stairs can be descended with a successful climb or acrobatics check (DC 10). The wall may be descended with a successful climb check (DC 15).

Knowledge (arcana), DC 15:
The statue is a minor construct called a wood golem.

Knowledge (arcana), DC 20:
The wood golem is vulnerable to fire (taking twice damage from fire and fire spells) and slashing weapons (like Strong Brute's axe) bypass its damage reduction.

Combat table:

<= ! means your action, go for it!

Only if you want to be standing. Use the slide and acrobatics. It's a 12+ anyway for you and you don't take damage if you fail.

Oh, and hey, please do feel free to roll for those knowledge spoilers out of turn. Knowing is an immediate action, and shouting out a warning or a bit of help is a free action (even in the surprise round).
