NPC & haunting figment of Ophiuchus' imagination

Ophiuchus:
"Oh, 'sister', look at you! Off on a big adventure for daddy," Merian says, not bothering to hide the condescension from her voice, "Look out for that puddle!" Merian suddenly knocks into Ophiuchus, who stumbles into a rather deep puddle and muddies the right side of his dress. Luckily, he doesn't feel the cold as mammals do, but it has made his footwear somewhat more slippery.

"Oh, my dear, my love," she says apologetically, "I don't know what came over me..."

For no reason, Ophiuchus suddenly changes direction to walk into a puddle before joining the rest of the group on the main path once more.

@Hamilton: No problems about those purchases. I'll note them on your chronicle sheet... if that's the right spot to do that?

The road is long and winding. You have been traveling for nearly two hours when...

The narrow path winds through the raking claws of the trees, now bereft of their leaves, which crunch loudly underfoot. Up ahead, a fallen tree trunk blocks the path. Suddenly a trio of snarling humanoids leaps up from behind the log, all greenish skin and fearsome tusks, bellowing vulgar challenges.

Most of the pathfinders recognize these creatures as orcs. They pound their broad chests and rush headlong at the stunned travellers.

The strong brute dismisses the thing's request, as he knew no songs, except songs of sorrow and hardship. He did not care to sing those, anymore.

**EDIT** Cyrus'd by Ophiuchus and I missed some things... edits throughout.

Hamilton's blade strikes the orc in the middle of its neck. The flesh, spine and connective tissue parts amazingly easily. Hot, green blood sprays Hamilton as the orc's head flies into the scrub some twenty feet away and the headless orc's body flops to the forest floor.

Just rolling, nothing to see here: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 1 = 20

Hamilton:
It wasn't just easy to behead the orc, it was as though the creature wasn't even there. The blood spray confirms Hamilton's suspicions. The heat was there, but there was no impact felt from the droplets of blood hitting his flesh. The orcs are illusory.

Strong Brute steps forwards to meet the charging orc, and disembowels the creature with a single sweep of his scythe. It falls to the ground clutching at its insides. The orc's jaw moves in wordless agony before the creature mercifully passes out, bleeding to death seconds later.

Just rolling again. What? Move along: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9

Strong Brute:
The scent of blood and spilled intestines fills the strong brute's nostrils. Ah, the smell of battle. These orcs are definitely real.

Ophiuchus damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11 Next time, you can just edit your post with an **EDIT** thing like I just did. I don't mind. :-)

Ophiuchus stoves in the skull of the orc he is facing off against with his flail. The creature hits the ground with a thud.

What, a man can't just roll something that looks suspiciously like a Will save for no reason?: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6

Ophiuchus:
Having never killed something with his flail before, Ophiuchus feels oddly numb. He doesn't even remember feeling the blow strike home. The real orc, however, is no doubt in very real pain - assuming it still lives.

Jaender perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6

Okay, sorry about all the edits above (if you were refreshing over the last 10 minutes). Combat over. Less than an hour. That's got to be some kind of PbP record...

The dust settles on the field of battle. The orcs were no match for the brave heroes, who stand victorious over their lifeless bodies. Birds can be heard tweeting haplessly away in the forest, almost as though nothing of interest were happening nearby at all.

With foes defeated, the path ahead beckons.

You can easily see that the orcs carry nothing of value or interest. You don't have to move on, by the way, the above reference to the path ahead is just flavor. You may certainly head off if you wish, though.

"Finally! A chance to show I am not useless with all these giants around..."

Jaender moves his position to clearly see the trio of orcs as they ambush the group. He takes a big breath, and... The trio is cut down before he can even finish his breath.

"Wow... Effective indeed! What kind of orc is stupid enough to ambush when they are outnumbered 2 to 1? Oh wait... Orcs. Never mind." He says with a content smile.

"Shall we continue on? According to this map, it looks like we still have a ways to go. Guessing from the tents they gave us, I would expect we will be spending the night in the wilderness tonight, the further we can make it today, the better I would think.

Ignoring the nagaji, again, Trask is a little concerned about the orcs. He doesn't bother to wipe off his blade, knowing that the "blood" was illusory. He pokes at the "body", and then checks the other ones, to see if they are the same.

He also will check for tracks, just in case. tracking: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16

He turns to the party, who are undoubtedly confused by his post-combat actions. "The tuskers weren't real. You didn't cause any pain, Poochie. Someone set this up, but I ain't no magicking type,", he spits, "so them that are should start figgering this s%$@ out."

We'll not try and work around the censoring... I don't care that much. You all know what he said ;)

The large man kicks at the fallen orc in front of him. As the dead beast flops around, he looks at Hamilton, confused and a bit irritated. What the hell had the man been talking about. Ophiuchus perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
Jaender perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18

Wandering around looking for clues as Trask requested, Jaender notices the faint smell of a very familiar, very special pipe weed near a copse of trees. Try as they might, the companions cannot locate Ophiuchus and Jaender'd mentor. They do remember the crafty old man entertaining the family with complex illusions from time to time, however.

As the illusions fade away, Trask locates some tracks near the fragrant trees, but they disappear suddenly, as though the human who made them simply flew away. No more can be discovered about what went on here.

The rest of the journey towards the crypt is uneventful. The companions find themselves just over half way by the end of the day, and decide to make camp. Vox manages to find them a clearing that meets with Trask's approval. It looks decidedly similar to the area where the illusory orcs ambushed the party. Certain they are not traveling in circles, everyone agrees to set up camp here.

Vox and Einhardt, and therefore everyone else, are taken completely unawares as a group of howling wolves appears at the edge of the firelight. Vox is quicker to react than his companion however, and springs into action when the wolves attack (gets to act during the surprise round).

Two wolves rush in to attack the man-meat, and one attacks his kin-who-smells-like-man-and-is-not-of-this-pack.

One wolf wraps its sharp teeth around Vox's ankle and pulls the poor man to the ground. Vox's animal companion suffers similarly at the mouth of the wolf who charged him, but is not knocked to the ground.

Everyone is prone but awake. Move action to get up, move action to retrieve an item. Unless you have medium or heavy armor, I'm assuming you sleep in your armor. Unless you have scent, low-light vision or darkvision, 20% miss chance on all attacks.

Notes for all:

Sorry about getting the icons confused! I got the initiative confused in two ways last fight, only one way this time - sorry Ophiuchus! I'll remember eventually. Updating my initiative block right away.

Perhaps to balance the scales, you are absolutely able to take a move and a standard action to retrieve your weapon! I noted that both were move actions in case someone wanted to take out a weapon and attack while lying down. You are now armed with your flail, despite Merian's meddling.

Vox, no issues about using reach while prone. -4 penalty is all.

The bleary-eyed companions slowly rouse themselves from slumber, coming to alert wakefulness as the situation becomes apparent. Each reaches for their weapon of choice, eager to join the fray and save the imperiled Vox.

Not bothering to stand, the heavily wounded Vox manages to swing his hammer around in a dangerous arc. The large head of the weapon connects forcefully with the wolf's flank, and Vox can hear several canine ribs snapping just before the wolf howls in pain.

Ophichius eventually locates his weapon and the two wrestle with the flail for a while until Ophichius finally comes out on top.

Ophichius searches his pack frantically. Eventually, he pulls out a flail before shoving it back in and shaking it around. He eventually manages to pull it out again, a look of victory on his face.

Wolf 2, drag CM: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11

Vox is having none of that, however, and kicks his feet free of the wolves' snapping jaws just in time.

Wolf 3, bite Einhardt: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6

Einhardt easily sidesteps the wolf's clumsy bite, and the attacking creature growls in frustration.

Jaender snaps awake at the sound of the attacking wolves, and jumps to his feet. Thankfully, its not that far of a distance. The strong brute's scythe passes through one side of the wolf and out the other, skewering the poor beast. The big man rips it free again, trailing blood. Whimpering softly, the wolf slumps to the forest floor, eyes closed and a pool of blood growing rapidly beneath it.

Jaender manages to provide some a little entertainment for the gathered combatants. Other than causing the wolves to become a little skittish, however, his spell has no effect. Kicking the ground in frustration, Jaender says:

Two fallen pack mates. One wolf-who-smells-like-man-and-is-not-of-this-pack. Five not-wolves-with-things-that-make-pain and one not-wolf-who-makes-the-light-that-burns. One me.

Whether from fear or from the pain of doing math, the last remaining active wolf turns, places its tail firmly between its legs (to avoid having it cut off) and runs as far and fast as it can. Alas for the wolf, it does not understand the significance of a reach weapon.

Vox AoO: 1d20 + 3 - 4 ⇒ (11) + 3 - 4 = 10

The ranger's heart was not in it, however, and he waves his hammer more to chase the wolf away than anything else. It works, too, and at the speed the wolf is traveling, only Einhardt would have any hope of catching it.

COMBAT OVER! Map updated for the hell of it with some annotations. Kinda like them!

The dust settles (literally) on the field of battle, and the companions find themselves huffing, panting, tired and with two unconscious wolves to deal with.

Feel free to pursue or fire after the wolf, but Vox will be able tell you that the wolf won't return to this spot. It will try to find a new, stronger pack.

* Morale:

I know morale checks went out the door with Pathfinder, but I really wanted to represent a chance for the wolf to flee. There is no morale in its statblock or in the bestiary, but I think having both its pack mates fall when facing off against vastly superior numbers deserves at least some kind of check. Happy to discuss opinions or rules about this further on the discussion thread.

Perhaps out of sheer spite, Hamilton Trask swings Excecutioner in a broad arc, striking the back of the wolf's head as it flees. The wolf falls to the ground, taking up a mouthful of grass as it slides headfirst into the ground.

Wow, Hamilton has been very precise - acrobatics exactly as required, attack roll exactly the right AC and damage exactly the wolf's HP.

As I said... Hamilton Trask is nothing, if not efficient. He is not concerned about the wolves, but neither will he bother with finishing them off, unless they are obviously suffering. He'll wait to see if Ophiuchus heals Vox and Einhardt.

"Any problems with that? Vox, you and Rudi can wake us up again in a coupl of hours, and then get your beauty sleep. Any questions, ladies?"

Obviously Trask has seen military action, and is now channeling his drill sergeant. Also, he fully realizes he is butchering the names... one might think he's doing it on purpose.

Vox and Einhardt get their regular amount of HP recovered for a full night's rest. Just let me know how many charges you'll use.

While the adventurers' sleep was interrupted, the interruption was thankfully both brief and relatively early on in the night. The new watch regimen laid out by the harsh Hamilton Trask at least helps everyone sleep a little safer. However, one may get the impression that Hamilton won't be invited back for the next mission...

Refreshed, the companions set of for another day's hike. According to the map, they should be able to reach the crypt before nightfall.

It is only mid-morning by the time they find themselves on the western shore of the Grey Lake.

The trees begin to thin, revealing a field of short, green grass that leads to the shores of a wide, calm lake reflecting the overcast sky above. A dense fog hangs over the center of the lake, obscuring the far side. Near the shore of the lake, a dark form lies next to the water.

Getting closer, you discover that the dark form is actually the decayed body of a man. He is dressed like a woodsman or a bandit, and his corpse is quite badly decomposed. There are bite marks all over him, but they seem to be the cause of death - no flesh has been taken with the bites. The creatures of the forest seem to have avoided eating the body.

Knowledge (local), DC 10:
This man is not from Kassen. His clothing is worn by the passage of time, but it is obviously of the kind purchased in larger cities (ie. it is not homespun).

Heal or Survival, DC 15:
The body has been here for at least a few months.

Heal or Knowledge (nature), DC 18:
The man was poisoned, which is likely why the forest creatures haven't eaten him.

Survival, DC 20:
Some old footprints can be found, some to the east of the body, eventually leading to the north and east of the lake from where the companions currently are, away from the crypt. The other (likely more recent) set of footprints leads to the south of here, towards the crypt. Given the advanced age of the footprints, nothing more can be discovered by them (the only reason they are still present is that the creatures who made them stepped in wet clay).

Everyone but Jaender notices that the beautifully made shortsword lying in the muck next to the man (masterwork shortsword), a coin purse at his belt has also spilled half its contents (87 gp in total). The coins appear relatively newly minted and are from Tamran (bearing the likeness of Forest Marshal Gavirk, nominal leader of Nirmathas).

Depending upon how well you rolled, your choices at this point are follow a trail or keep on going to the crypt... post away! :-)

Huh, maybe this won't be so bad. Maybe I will get a chance to show I'm not a half pint of uselessness... Probably tough to impress a macho demon slayer when I am only 20 pounds of fire and shadow... Always up for a challenge!

He is, however, happy with his effort. Even if nothing sticks for now, perhaps sometime down this troubled man's path in life, some of their conversation this evening will have a positive effect.

After another long trek through the woods Jaender is relieved to see a clearing open up, with the lake in front of them. He moves to inspect, to see how cool and refreshing it might be, but stops short upon seeing the decaying body.
