"You..." - is all Zane was able to say. Once again cold tendrils grazed his heart and the unnatural chill made him wince in pain. Clutching his chest the ranger consider stepping behind Nadab, but decides against it. Without my bow, I can not hurt it from there. I'd be worthless

Enraged by the thought that he could not help his friends, the ranger steps towards the obscure creature hoping to flank it with Bern, and strikes again venting his frustration. "Die you scum. Die again!"

Zane's shortsword slashes right through the shadow, which does not seem to be the least bit bothered by the ranger's weak, but deftly aimed attack. Rasping horribly, the shadow once again reaches into Bern's chest and wraps it icy hand around the fighter's heart (for 5 Strength damage).

Crypt of the Everflame

Just as Venedictos stated, the shadow does not follow when they beat a hasty retreat from the chamber. Shutting the door behind them, the four fledgling adventurers find themselves in a silent, dark room, with only the remains of the beetle they slayed minutes earlier to keep them company.

Bern and Zane have sustained some pretty significant Strength damage. What will you all do? A successful Heal check and 8 hours rest will take care of 2 points of damage. A full day's rest will heal 4 points.

Venedictos starts examining their "wounded", shaking his head worriedly. "This is not good. Not good. They need some serious rest and time to heal, time our captured villager probably doesn't have, but us all getting killed isn't going to help her either." He glances back at the shut doors. "You know, I was only wildly hoping beyond hope. I didn't expect that leaving would actually accomplish anything. There is one possibility..."

Venedictos attempts to disbelieve the Strength damage to his friends.
Will: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5

Yep, well that did it, I'm sure!

He shakes his head. "It was possible that somebody created an illusion of that shadow, like someone created the illusion of those orcs on our way here, but if it is an illusion, I can't see through its effects. Bern, Zane, try."

The party is able to retreat all the way back to the supply room, with Zane assuring the more uncertain members of the group that the shadow did indeed exist. Less-than-happy to see them back so soon, Roldare opens the door to the supply room to let them in, grumbling about their cowardice and lack of experience all the while.

With Nadab's aid, Venedictos is able to improve Bern and Zane's afflictions, though both men still feel like, well, shadows of their former selves. After eight hours of rest, every second of it filled with Roldare's increasingly frantic insistence that the party was dooming his sister to death, the group is about as close to fighting shape as they are going to get.

Just for me to understand (remember) - we have just two doors now, one way back in the original hallway (after the room with the traps), leading towards east, but these could not be unlocked/broken. And then, there are also just one more doors leading from the room where we have killed the bug, and those lead in the room with the shadow? Is this correct? Or there are some other available doors also? Maybe that one in the first room of the crypt leading towards east also, did we try that one?

Crypt of the Everflame

Roldare's frustration reaches a fever pitch as the party rests and spends the better part of an hour debating what to do next. His anxiety gives way to anger, which lends the cobbler a strange moment of clarity.

"A passage," he says suddenly and without provocation. "There is a passage we use to travel through the crypt more quickly during setup.

Scribbling frantically on a piece of parchment, Roldare draws a crude map and a set of instructions for locating a secret passage in the chamber where the party fought the fire beetle. He thrusts the parchment into Venedictos's hand and unlocks the door to the storage room.

"You now know the way," he says, almost shouting as he slams the door open. "Go save my sister!"

Following Roldare's hastily scribbled directions, the party is able to locate and open the passage. A dozen stone steps lead down into darkness.

Actually read up on this module on the Paizo forums and the author himself confirmed that the staircases depicted on the map are meant to connect.

On the upper level with the party there is a door to the south. On the lower level there is another door to the north adjacent to the 15-foot-tall wooden statue of Kassen wielding two enormous shields. One of the shields is inscribed with the word “home,” while the other reads “family.”
