Belathorian arrives at Fort Ferris. No-one has seen much of him for weeks, he has been locked away at the temple and has made a couple of trips back to discuss certain things with Toth. He has been trying to research both the priesthood of Razmiran and any clues as to a way of helping Pa Ferris. His lack of useful progress on both fronts has left him somewhat frustrated.

"Friends, its been too long. I've wasted enough time in dusty halls, I long for our adventures again. when can we be away?"

I know I've been quiet here (and generally!) Summer means I'm off work and the kids are at home, little screen time available! Thanks for your patience.

"Bel! Perfect timing!" Vivian gathers up her new letter with the others she has prepared, then walks to Belathorian and throws her arm around his neck in a playful headlock. "I'm going into town for my daily debate with the elders. But it sounds like we're going to leave in a week!" Vivian has only the best in her heart, Bel has been growing on her like a brother, but she is still oblivious to whether her physical 'one of the guys' attitude is actually recieved as bullying by Bel.

Releasing the man Vivian starts to don her armor that hangs by the door like a coat. "Speaking of it, we all should go press them on this issue together, if you're all free of course."

A knock on the door draws everyone's attention. A small boy is discovered behind the door upon answering it. His eyes grow wide seeing everyone gathered together, but he manages to stutter out, "M-miss Ferris, the mayor and other elders wanted to see you and as many other Keepers of the Flame as you could gather quick-like." His voice drops with reverence when stating the name of your group, and before you can say much his face reddens and he runs off.

Allister suits up quicker than ever before, excited by the idea of adventure. He had grown tired of the dull dealings at the fort. (This does require someone's help...Vivian does like metal and armor...).

His greatsword feels at home in his hand again.

He had been practicing his swordsmanship and strength training every morning and every night, but now it was real. Gad'larr had embarrassed him in unarmed combat training several times during their wait, and Vivian had taught him some advanced tactics that he struggled to remember, but Allister felt better for learning it. Lightbringer Naabi had once told him 'you only get better by facing a better opponent.' Allister was glad his training opponents were his friends and not real enemies, not evil.

Belathorian is dressed in simple robes unarmed and unarmoured. Heading once more for the door he holds it open for the others.

"We shouldn't keep them waiting, they may have news?"

You arrive at the meeting hall fairly quickly and are ushered in to see the elders of the town. As you enter previous discussion between them grinds to a halt. That doesn't stop Mayor Uptal from smiling warmly at you and waiting for the door to close before beginning.

"I'm very glad all of you were able to come to the meeting today. The town seems to have settled down and with all the time without threats from outside have calmed the nerves of the citizens. I wanted to personally thank you for remaining here and helping with the calming presence."

Mayor Uptal looks down at some notes in front of him and shuffles through them before once again looking in your direction. "There is not much here to discuss, but we'll start with the more disturbing news first. Molthune and Nirmathas have been in a quiet war for some time now, and rumor has it the Molthuni crown has started giving license to privateers and mercenaries to disrupt Nirmthas trade and business. Nothing we can do much about at this juncture, but something that you, as heroes and adventurers, should know about."

He coughs briefly and continues, "Now, for your journey to the capital. It would take several weeks of travel by horseback, longer on foot, luckily we have transportation in the form of a barge. It is a six day journey down the Tourondel River and across Lake Encarthan into Nirmathas, but it'll be your fastest way of getting there unless you've picked up some powerful magic in the month here. The ship we've chartered is called the Black Mist and is run by Captain Walren with the help of his deck hand Ewem. They await your arrival at the docks tomorrow morning to start on your journey. Should you have any questions about the trip or would like to bring anything else up now would be the time before getting your affairs in order and packing." He looks expectantly at Vivian, waiting for the plans to be brought forth again.

Vivian starts to pace with her documents held behind her back in her clasped hands. These debates are by no means new for Vivian and the Council.

"Esteemed Elders and Mayor of Kassen, you are indeed correct when you say we are amid a war. Silent, yes, but still one that we have felt here at Kassen. Molthune is not our only enemy though. We've seen an increase of raids from the Orcs of the Hold of Belkzen, and although Lastwall is a quiet ally they are also in bed with Molthune and can only aid us in skirmishes against the Orcs. In fact, I believe that if the Orcs of the Hold of Belkzen were not there, Lastwall and Molthune would have attempted to overtake us long ago. Being the most major settlement on this countries Northern Border, I see it that we must prepare for treachery and raid. Prepare for the dark days to come and build ourselves a fortress to defend the Southern Fangwood. As this is a time of need for Nirmathas, I feel my plans for a military academy are even more just. We have to be able to defend our people, Elders, we need a fortress to help us stand tall and keep our ground. Like Kassen would have. All I ask is for cooperation, and perhaps some help with the labor costs, but we can discuss those details later. Really, (sigh) just tell me, are you on our side? The side of a strong future? We have discussed though and think it would be best for this endeavor to solely lie in the hands of Kassen. There is no need to bring in others that won't understand our community here.

These are letters I have written, drafts requesting military minds to come teach at our school."

Vivian hands over the letters and plans for the fortress and enhanced city defenses.

The mayor and the others take the documents written and hem and haw over them, giving each one consideration. The only one that doesn't really look over them is Elder Bick, who has been against this idea since its proposition. He clenches his jaw in stubborn opposition before the elders gather into a circle to discuss the idea what is probably the final time before your journey.

Mayor Uptal regards everyone and flashes Vivian a quick smile before he begins, "With the ever increasing threats going on in the background of our country's international politics it would be a great boon to have this sort of campus easily within reach." He takes a quick breathe then continues, "However, it has been brought up that should a full scale escalation between nations were to occur such facilities would make this town a target of conquest for a foothold." Bick looks rather smug with this proclamation, but his mouth quickly turns down in bitterness with the rest of Uptal's speech. "You have our permission to begin construction of the necessary buildings and amenities for the fortress. As for labor costs, most of those will have to be funded by you, though all we will need is payments in intervals as construction goes on and roofs are raised."

Smiling, Gad will nod his head in understanding of the mayor's speech.

"That sounds basically fair Mayor Uptal. However, may I suggest one additional addendum to your caveats?
This idea is not meant to overtax the town or cause unrest, but to improve the local and national military
resources of Nirmathas both directly and indirectly. Since the town cannot help financially for whatever reasons,
I would ask the college be exempt from any direct or indirect tax by the Kassen community now and in the future.
Since we need to start from scratch with no real financial help from anyone, and our success only benefits the local area,
this is a small thing to ask I believe."

Vivian turns around and pumps her fist, "Yeessss!" Then straightens her armor and turns back. "If we are all in agreement with Gad's wise amendment, then I would like to thank you, Elders, for partnering with our efforts to usher in a safe future for Kassen. I will withhold sending my letters calling for military teachers at this time." Vivian receives the paperwork back form Mayor Uptal. She will still send the letter to her connection in Skelt, hoping that some reply will await them when they return from the capital.

"And on our continuing quest to defend the memory of Ekat Kassen and Nirmathas from possible internal threats, does this council have any contacts in the Tamran that we may use? I.. I've never been to a city like this before.. The paladin is intent to help Vivian in her quest, and believes that they should be able to secure Dawnguard support (especially if he can convince Captain Ferris to join), but her proposals, the details, the numbers and costs and logistics - they made his head spin.

"There may be Dawnguard members in the city, might even be a gathering. I can try to get in contact with them before we go. If we could send a letter to Lightbringer Naabi she might be able to tell them of our coming." As soon as the idea leaves his mouth, Allister feels a pang of embarrassment and anxiety. He cannot write, and would need someone smarter than him to draft the letter on his behalf.

Hearing they were leaving actually made Brezik a bit sad. He had just gotten back into the rhythm of the blacksmiths life and he had never made as much progress or done as good a quality of work as when Qina had helped him. But he knew well enough that was just selfishness. His friends and his home needed him.

Sounds like the decision has been made for us that we leave tomorrow. Seems rushed to me . I guess that means no time for new prep work or contacting allies or guides for the city. That means we have what we have. So that boat ride to the city... Any of you guys think to get us a return ticket while you were at it... Or are we on our own for that too.

GM... Can we assume that Brezik has finished his blacksmithing projects ?

Yep.

The mayor smiles tightly with Brezik's comments. "Considering your initial rush to head to the capital a month ago we figured you would want to leave sooner than than later." The smile turns noticeably brighter, "We do actually have a contact in Tamran, a veteran ranger who goes by Reginar. He should be able to help you get sorted when you arrive."

Reginar... I guess you put a little thought into things... Does he know we are coming?

Wand of CLW is the most cost efficient out of combat around so that's seconded. I don't like wands for spells where the effects are strongly effected by the low level or low saving throw of the wand. So I would skip Color spray, , Snap Dragon fireworks or almost any attack spell. I like things like shield, mage armor, pro evil, magic weapon, shield of faith, bless, Comprehend Languages, obscuring mist, long-strider ,or expeditious retreat. Another option might be 15 or so alchemist fires, acid vials, and/or alkali flasks spread around the group for swarms. Here comes a swarm... 1st round here comes 5 alchemist fires.

Swift Girding...really doesn't help me or Qina much, but I can see it helping the rest of you. My vote is for Liberating Command. It gives a bound, grappled, or otherwise held friendly an immediately additional escape artist attempt (from range) with an additional bonus, and can be used by clerics, paladin, and sorcerers. No UMD needed for most of us. Its normally able to be cast as an immediate action, but with a wand I think this a moot point using the rules for wands. I would go with Remove Sickness otherwise really: Something that is usable for everyone.

I see their usefulness, probably more so than most other items at our level and 100% think we would benefit from having them, especially since they are being purchased with "group funds." That said, they just feel strange to me, almost gimmicky. That is probably just because I have never been in any campaign that used them.

What I'm getting at is I fully agree they will be a good and useful purchase, but I will leave it in the hands of people that are more knowledgable.

Looking down at the drawings in her hands, Vivian speaks to her five friends, "You know guys, I don't think it's right anymore to call this 'Fort Ferris'. This is our baby now, its name should reflex that. Fortress of the Flame, or something."

In the presence of the town elders, Qina was quiet as a mouse. Easily intimidated by the older folks, especially opinionated ones that knew her parents, she sat still longer than any of her companions had seen in the last few weeks. She doodled in her book as the grown folk discussed the future plans of the town and the soon to be fortress.

As Vivian mentioned the name of the fortress, Qina started brainstorming. She jotted down name after name in her book, usually scratching them out seconds later.

Hmm, this is going to be harder than I thought.

She continued writing and scratching and writing and scratching until suddenly she just blurted out "what about the Flame Keep?" She hadn't even looked up from her writing and had even already scratched it out, but it wasn't half bad and so far it was the best she had come up with. "Maybe even do some kind of flame motif..."

"Makes sense to me."

We can always save those ear-marked funds for later. A wand of Lesser Restoration would be a solid choice. Qina currently has a wand of mage armor and a wand of magic missile so she's good for now. If we have any money left over, Brezik makes a great point about swarms and a few alchemical items. 5-10 alchemist's fires would be a perfect choice, and 100-200 gp.

I'm in favor of wands of shield, protection from evil, lesser restoration, or the alchemical grab bag. The first module was steeped in evil and ability damage so I'm inclined to curbing one of those threats. For the alchemical goodies, I haven't used any of thebgold we earned and figure that's the best use of it. Pretty good on other gear.

By the time we could can afford a full wand of Lesser Restoration, we will be 5th or 6th level by then. I would rather spend the money now and have something more useful than coins in my pockets...but that's just my opinion. As far as left over coinage for alchemist's fire...that's up to the GM. And I also really doubt the entire town has 5-10 for sale either really. Mainly I was just trying to simplify the trade in stuff so the GM would look kindly on whatever minor wands we asked for. We try and complicate things more then...who knows. We should probably move this to the discussion tab if we need to debate this further BTW.

First off, sorry for the lack of OOC last post. I was on my phone.

My Lay on Hands ability has a mercy modifier that removes Sickened, so I think we should choose something else. I do like the idea of alchemical fires and other alchemy items, that gives us some versatility.

"Aye, Reginar should be expecting your arrival in about 6 days time. Be prepared for the journey on the docks tomorrow at dawn."

Just let me know when you guys are ready to continue.

Halfling Inactive

I'm ready.

Almost as soon as the elders had left Qina jumped off of her chair.

"I'm going to go spend the night with my family. I'll see you guys at the docks in the morning."

She waved as fast as she could move her hand and was gone out the door in the blink of an eye.

Vivian rolls up her papers and slaps them down into her palm. "Alright! Get your adventure pants on, I want to see you all bright and early tomorrow!" she then gives the elders one last determined grin, especially Elder Bick. "Next time you see us, we'll have made a believer out of the last of you."

Allister leaves the council and packs his few things, sharpens his blades with a whetstone and bathes in a small creek that runs through the farmland.

Afterwords, he goes to the Flame Fort and asks Vivian to help him draft a letter for Lightbringer Naabi.

Lightbringer Naabi,

We got the Everflame. Killed a shadow, too. Found out a wizard from the capital stole Kassen's amulet - we are going to find him. We are also building a fort in Kassen to keep the area safe. Flame Fort. Will write when I can.

Allister.

Unfortunately Allister cannot remember the name of the city or address where Lightbringer Naabi is posted, so he does not send it. Instead he stuffs it in his backpack, hoping they will run into a member of the Dawnguard on their journey that can forward on his message.

Belathorian says his simple goodnights to his friends, clasping hands with a confidence that underlined the growth of his friendship with them all.

"until the morning then."

Returning to the temple he ascents the steps to his small austere chamber. With deft and careful movements he draws down a large wooden box from a high shelf above his cot. The lid lifts easily to reveal his beautiful scythe with its spiral inlay. Leaving the weapon in the box he moves over to a chest at the foot of the bed, from which he draws a shining suit of mails. The links gently chime as he lays the armour next to the scythe. The sight of these relics awaken the adventure in his heart and it is a long time before sleep claims his consciousness as he sits cross-legged on the cold floor proper against a wall, staring at his tools of war.

Qina:
Your family spends much of their time with you tonight, minus Pressi, who tries to throw quiet barbs your way without being noticed. Your dreams are simple enough to start, but by their end you find yourself between your friends and the Dragon. It intends to kill and eat them, but your words, your passion, and love for your companions stays its claws.

Vivian:
Your day and night pass routinely, and it is only when you are asleep do the thoughts of your father and Norgorber come to the forefront of your mind. Your dreams are confusing as shadowed figures tumble about an altar to Gorum. You think you see a one eyed mask etched into the steel of plate armor on the dias, but cleaning it with your hands reveals there is nothing under the grime at all.

Gad:
The rest of your night passes quickly, the only issue being your mother's tears as you leave her once again. Your father and yourself manage to calm her without too much trouble. You dream of peace this night, a calm day interrupted by a sudden and intense storm. You find your center, your poise and weather the storm. You awake reassured of your control.

Brezik:
Your night is typical with your family, sibling squabbles and all. You dream this night of redemption. A great battle is had, and with a mighty swing you bring down your last foe, shattering its archaic and shoddy armor. You take the broken pieces and spend time in your smithy, reforging it into something stronger and better than it was before.

Al:
Your night is similar to the others in the month previous, training, bathing, maintaining. In the night you dream of darkness. Your light is shining brightly from within, surrounded by friends and family when it is all swallowed up suddenly. Your light continues to glow feebly, holding back the dark, but only just. With effort your glow brightens and pushes the dark out completely until you are a shining beacon once more.

Bel:
Your night is simple and the sleep that claims you is awash in the cold light of your Lady. You dream of the spiral, your own or someone else's you cannot tell. It winds downward, ever downward into murky depths the likes of which you cannot fathom. But your trust in yourself and your companions, and with your faith in Pharasma you follow the spiral. You follow it down, to a place where thought has no meaning, and as you continue, you realize you have broken out of the depths and have ascended. Below are the spirals of all and you wake feeling that you have glimpsed something rarely seen by other mortals, your faith reaffirmed again.

You arrive the next morning at the docks to see a small sailed barge. Waiting on the pier the barge is tied to is the mayor, a burly dwarf with a thick black beard, and a heavily scarred Kellid man. The dwarf strides forward, hand outstretched, "Welcome to the Black Mist. I am Captain Walran, and this man here," he points to the Kellid man, "is my deck hand, Ewem. He doesn't speak much Taldan, but if you know Hallit, he'll talk your ear off. We have enough provisions to last us the trip to Tamran and cots enough for everyone in the cabin. I wanted to thank you for providing extra security on this trip, for while I love the waters they have been getting more dangerous of late."

The mayor also smiles at you and wishes you luck on the journey and with finding out anything you can about who plundered Kassen's tomb. He stands waving on the dock until the Black Mist has turned a corner on the river and you are out of sight.

"More dangerous? How so?"

Vivian is standing in plain clothes on the dock with her armor, shield, and mace wrapped in oiled cloth. This idea of traveling quickly by water was great until her dream last night revealed the obvious to her.. water causes rust. Now she is paranoid of the river misting onto the deck and tarnishing her precious metals. The only reason she has left her great sword out is that it's Gorum's symbol of power, 'Surely it will prove resilient... ' she tries to convince herself, though starts to doubt as the dark river waters lazily drift by.

Vivian had been able to immerse herself into the Keep's design for weeks, allowing her shelter from her grieving. Leaving that realm of reverie has allowed hard truths to sink back in though, 'F%+@ing Norgorber, I will kill every follower you have and let you be forgotten, I will reveal who you really are.. Can I commit myself against you as I have committed myself to Gorum? Can I live as both?'

"Well met, Captain," Allister says with a bow. He does not know the deck hand's language, so he looks him in the eyes and pounds his fist on the armor protecting his heart - he considers the Dawnguard salute a universal sign of respect and brotherhood. "Farewell, mayor."

As he boards the ship, Allister's mind chews on what the Captain had said. 'Providing extra security...the waters have been getting more dangerous of late.'

Allister peers over the edge of the ship into the deep water and considers removing his armor for fear of falling overboard and sinking like a stone. He decides to wear it anyway. 'If my armor is the death of me then so be it. It has saved me more times than I can count.'

Brezik left the house exited. His bag of Holding was loaded with the heavier pieces of his gear incase he went for an unexpected swim, and plenty of snacks. What was more important though was that he was going on a trip down the Tourondel River. As a young dwarf Brezik had spent plenty of time on the shores of the river, looking for frogs, fishing, and swimming. How many times had he seen a river barge making it's way along the river and dreamed of what kind of adventures it might lead to. To Brezik it had always been a childish dream. But here he was actually getting ready to fulfil one of his boyhood fantasies. He was practically skipping as he made it to the docks.

When Brezik first saw the boat he stopped a little in surprise a little in shock. It hadn't occurred to him that he would be seeing other Dwarves. His entire life the only Dwarves he had met were the ones in his immediate family. Thoughts came unbidden to the Dwarfs mind... What if the Captain finds out who Breziks family is, what if he mentions to someone in Skelt that there are dwarves in Kessen, what if Brezik doesn't act enough like other Dwarves, how will this man treat someone with the name of "slag"....

When it came time to get on the boat and Brezik passed the Captains appraising eye Brezik addressed the captain of the river boat staring at his own toes. Sir I'm... Brezik... Arken... Brezik took a deep breath and looked the older dwarf squarely in the eyes. Brezik Arkenslag sir... It's a family name. The last bit of course to let the man know that Brezik hadn't earned the "slag" Moniker himself but had inherited it.

Dwarves from dishonored families must append “-slag,” “-slagsun,” or “-slagdam” to their surnames to indicate their shameful status. These dwarves are commonly banished or ostracized; they are forced to eke out a living at the fringes of dwarven settlements or in bleak wilderness areas.

Captain Walran scratches his beard with some vigor before answering Vivian's question. "Molthuni privateers prowl the waters looking for victims," he explains, "along with the accursed faith barges of Razmiran, who force travelers to accept the faith of the Living God, often at the point of a sword."

Seeing Gad'larr's natural gait shift to sea legs so quickly and easily the Captain smiles and seems to know he'll have more help on the vessel than usual.

Again Walran scratches his beard, this time listening to Brezik's proclamation. "Family name hmm?" He gives a final scratch before laughing boisterously, "Son, I'm lucky to have escaped a slag myself, was shunned for having 'unhealthy fascinations' with water instead of dirt and metals. Let me tell ya, on this barge I only care about the character of the person, not the name they've got attached." He gives a meaty slap on the shoulder and a smile that could be construed as comforting.
