Ouch. Ce la vie'!
Maybe that will be a good time to go over the game Vivian wants to put together?
Still that gives us 10 days or so before he goes. Do we want to move this game ahead and set up the next part before he goes? (Assuming GM Fez is ready and up to doing that before the goes.)
Vivian Ferris |
Thanks for the heads up Fez! Enjoy your travels.
Speaking to Allister's thought, this idea is by no means a replacement, just another outlet. That's a strong reason why I insist on rotating the GM role as well, spread out responsibility in the games.

Qina Coldfire |
[dice=Hit Points] 1d6+1
+1 Fortitude save
+1 Reflex save
+2 Knowledge (arcana)
+1 Use Magic Device
+1 Craft (tattoo) [background skill]
+1 Profession (cook) [background skill]
+1 1st level spell slot
+5 Cold Resistance
+1 Natural Armor
New Spells
..Grease
..Color Spray
New Feat
..Precise Shot
Since I haven't used it yet, can I swap Color Spray out for Crafter's Fortune?
Full disclosure: it will allow me to craft tattoos faster and I can cast it on Brezik and Viviam as well. In addition, if I succeed on an Aid Another check, my Helpful trait means I'll add another +4 for a final total of +9 to their crafting checks.
Vivian Ferris |
Qina that aid is super nice.
Breastplate (AC 6) 67gp Dc 16 checks... where the total at the end of construction has to equal 125.
With Qina's +9 aid and If I can aid as well for an additional +2, we'd give a +11 to Brezik's +12 craft. So whatever the odds are that Qina nad I both succeed, now we're at +23 before Brezik rolls the actual crafting roll.
Worst case that still builds it: Qina and Viv fail to aid everytime, Brezik rolls 4's so the results are only 16's. It would take 8 weeks
With both aids succeeding and Brezik averaging 10's, it would take 4 weeks.
With only Viv's aid and Brezik averaging 10's, it would take 5 weeks.
With only Qina's aid and Brezik averaging 10's, it would take 4 weeks.
How many craft actions can be done a week? Can a person only build one item?
Vivian Ferris |
Also, what are everyone's thoughts on timing between Fez's hiatus and what is looking like the Kingmaker campaign? Have characters ready by July 29th? Start before the 29th? Wait for Fez to get back in August to start?
Fez and Mantic0re still have to comment on the Kingmaker idea as well.
Brezik Arkennslag |
Okay... Qina's spell basically means auto success on craft checks for Brezik and Vivian.... So we'll have 17 + Brezik's roll every time.... and then Qina adds another +4 if she can roll a 5 or better.
I want to make Vivians Armor Masterwork... Which means we will need a total of 200 for our craft checks. That would mean like 6 weeks to make it. Keep in mind that at 5th level Brezik is getting a skill unlock in armor crafting that will literally cut Craft time in half (thankyou Unchained rogue). His 5th level feat will be also be Craft Magic Arms and Armor. With this in mind I would like to save Vivians armor till after we hit 5th level. It will take us less time to make and will have a magical enhancement bonus.
For now I was planning on making an Armored Coat for Brezik as well as a light steel shield, Dwarven Waraxe, and a great axe. (None of these would be masterwork because Masterwork takes more time then we really have at the moment.) I did the math and as long as I can get a total of 10 or more on 4d20 then I will easily have time to spare.
If some one had a specific weapon or less expensive armor they wanted made we could prolly toss a 5th item into the cue for this downtime as well.
Qina Coldfire |
Regarding the Crafting, we may as well wait on Vivian's armor until she has the proficiency to wear it. Hopefully by that time we can afford special material. Mithral plate or something.
I think I need a 9+ to aid another. I have a 0 Int modifier and no ranks but my Supportive trait gives me a +1 bonus on Aid Another checks, so like a 55% chance of succeeding.
Perhaps we can setup up a shop at Fort Ferris...
For King Maker, I think Fez's hiatus would be a good time to get started.
Brezik Arkennslag |
Don't forget to cast crafters fortune on yourself before you make your dc 10 aid another check Qina.
Qina Coldfire |
I can create tattoos probably in one week when not crafting anything else. Even complex tattoos shouldn't take more than one week, and less difficult ones will take less time. Regardless they won't be very expensive in almost all circumstances.
At 5th level, I'll take Inscribe Magical Tattoo and be able to make magical ones.

Definitely want one or two of those!
=)Vivian Ferris |
I like where your crafting heads are at. All sounds good, there'll likely be a line out Qina's tattoo parlor pretty soon too!
Here is a Google Doc with a map of Kassen and a spreadsheet outlining Vivian's ambitious plan. I have marked the area she has in mind in red. Obviously this will take sometime but that's good.
The large campus will first and foremost be a large defensive fortification. Close second it will be a military academy, training elite Nirmathas soldiers who can then lead their local militias. Thirdly it is our super badass hangout with lodging, a war room for planning, a forge and one or more workstations to make our crafting better, storage for materials and loot, and of course a storefront. Fourthly there will be a non-lethal combat area to coincide with the academy and which will also provide a small amount of revenue.
Since the Ferris farm is in Vivian's backstory I don't expect or intend to cash it in for the 2,090gp that the Ultimate Campaign says a farm is worth, instead Vivian will offer it in a trade for some of the desired land. There are four establishments that will have to be bought out as well. Since bars, houses, and shops are valued between 1000 to 1500gp I've estimated the four to total at 5000gp. As on the spreadsheet, Vivian's plans will cost roughly 10,000 -2090 +5000 = 12,910gp
Ok, so yes that is a crazy amount of dough to put in. Which is why we won't be paying for it out of our own adventure cash. Vivian is going to fund-raise for it this next in-game month, contacting people in the militia network as well as figures in the Capital. Since Kassen is on the boarder with a violent barbarian neighbor it is in Nirmathas' best interests to have a strong fort here. Also she will be recruiting military veterans to come and work in the military academy. Of course, this will all be beneficial to the town and she will request a percentage pledged if she is able to secure the larger portion.
Everyone, feel free to look over the rough plans and offer thoughts. If anything seems silly or if there is something you want added feel free to make an edit as well.
Fez, Let me know what you think and what you would like to see. I wanted to run it by you before Viv starts talking to the towns elders and getting it rolling. I'm down to play ball with whatever you feel is fair.
Brezik Arkennslag |
That's a pretty major pitch Vivian. But it's exactly the kind of thing Gorum and Vivian would want. The question I would ask is it what the other people of Kassen would want. Your bound to have pushback of some kind from someone in town.
Possible sources include...
1. anyone who moved to Kassen because they wanted to live in a quiet little town.
2. Pacifists.. I.e. Followers of Shelyn who don't want their home turned into a military enclave.
3. People in positions of authority and power who don't want to see a change take place that they don't directly control. I.e. Mayor, elders, constables
4. Business owners who don't want more competition with the inevitable influx of goods from the city
5. Anyone who is set in their ways and doesn't want to see the place they grew up change. I.e what if one of the businesses you want to buy out ha been in someone's family since the time of Kassen... They may not want to sell.
6. People who value Kassen's independence and autonomy from the capital.
Just some thoughts. The changes you propose would cause some major changes and effect allot of people. Some people would definitely benefit. Some would definitely be hurt. But I wouldn't expect something this big without allot of hardwork, role playing, politicking, some conflict and even a little backstabbing along the way.
Vivian Ferris |
Absolutely Brezik. I think it could be an enjoyable process if others are interested in it too. I expect it to play out that Vivian will make a lot of Diplomacy and Soldier(recruitment) skill checks similar to crafting in order to determine the level of success of her plan. Say the plan is broken into 3 scope groups with ranges of success. Below W nothing gets built. between W and X the smallest scope is allowed, X to Y medium scoped plan passes, Y to Z the whole shabang is green lit.
I could see the fund raising having a similar system that would drone on over time until the total is met.
In essence, Vivian is a dreamer and I totally agree that she is trying to shoot the moon. Fez, let me know if you would like the plan broken into scopes for a function like I detailed above.
Allister Sunscale |
I haven't had time to look over the Kingmaker campaign, but I'm in. Is there another thread up for the campaign already?
I'm not sure what type of character I will create, but I may use my fighter archer, or a hunter. I've been pretty busy lately, so I'll get caught up.
As for the Fort Ferris, I think it's a cool idea that's exactly in line with Vivian as a character. You may want to find a "general manager" of sorts to run things in case we have to run off on an important mission. I think it's a cool secondary mission we can work on over time. It will be a lot of side work to get that up and running, but Allister would be happy to help.
Vivian Ferris |
Thread is here.
And no worries, I'm excited and posting a lot about it but I probably won't put the gameplay up until a week from now unless everyone is ready before.

A couple of points from me:
Gad could be persuaded to help teach unarmed combat skills and tactics at the academy once he's more confident in his abilities (5th+ level?).
Gad's foster father is a veteran of the Worldwound (He was a only an infantryman and supply clerk as far as I know), but he would probably be willing to teach as well if compensated whatever he learned or was taught what he was there (basic combat training and logistics if nothing else).
Also don't forget: Nirmathas is at WAR. It has been for years. Vivan's academy would probably be looked at quite favorably in most cases, but could also be a target for its enemies if it becomes too well known or successful.
Just my two cents.
@Qina: Did you ever consider taking the Tattooed Mystic Prestige class with Qina?
Gad’larr Fireblood |
Fair enough.
FYI: I tried Dragon disciple back in 3.5 Edition.
It was OK, but you lose a lot in spellcasting and don't gain much back in melee combat! Mainly you get the Breath Weapon and Wings I think...
HEY!
There is a new book out that you may want to look at too:
Pathfinder Player Companion: Legacy of Dragons (PFRPG)
(So new there is no PDF yet!)
It's all about playing the dragon-blooded types!

I'm all for using the same thread, just for simplicity and having things in a single place. That said, I if we switch to a new one for the next chapter of the story I won't mind.
Vivian Ferris |
I vote fpr same thread, update the name maybe if you feel inclined.
Lurking sounds good, I'll throw together an idea for fundraising based on the craft system tomorrowish sometime. I haven't been able to find a definitive fundraising system.
Belathorian Twice Born |
I vote for same thread too. There's a lot of story/rp here that it would be good to be Abe to easily refer to.
I know I haven't posted in a while, sorry for that, I've been trying to work out where Bel fits in all this, I have an idea now but I'll disclose tomorrow.
Vivian Ferris |
I haven't been able to find a clear explanation of the crafting rules that lets me reproduce Brezik's numbers, but the cost of the item(gp)/the DC = ~2 (really 1.5 to 2.5) So I'm going with two and it still works out to be fair in the end, in my opinion at least.
I have three different builds, Base. Nice. Awesome!
Base = 6910gp
Nice = 10410gp
Awesome! = 12910gp
With a DC of 15, they would take Viv (and consider "1 day" as a meeting or writing a letter)
Base = 921 days or 2.5 years
Nice = 1388 days or 3.8 years
Awesome! = 1721 days or 4.7 years
So, I feel two different things about this.
#1 is that it might be fast for RL where projects can take decades to get off the ground and done. Yet there's,
#2: More than 5 years in game sounds rough if we're serious about attempting this. Also keep in mind 1 year of construction.
Alright, good lead-in tooo:
Vivian also knows she has to do this with help, and will approach Al and Bel (as they have diplomacy and motives, if you think your character would be interested speak up when Viv lays out the plans to everyone) for assistance with the understanding that the Dawnguard and Church of Pharasma will get structures on the Campus. For cost sake they would enshrine an already planned building like the Infirmary or a Classroom or the Armory.
With help of Bel, Al, and anyone else who is interested, we can FUND-RAISE within a year.
Now we're onto the politics that Brezik soundly brought up. This will be done first and during this month of downtime. Viv and whomever is with her will need to speak to the elders, townsfolk, and property owners who will be effected. All three builds can succeed without buying out all the property, I really just wanted to change the town gate and walls.
I'm not sure what to do with these DCs, Say 10 conversations with the various groups, taking an average roll of 10, beating 175 would be hard as Viv's mod is +6. Al is +9, Bel is +4. I can't really go much further on this..
Thoughts? Where does everyone think we should draw the lines?
EDIT: I do not mean to strongarm anyone into assisting in this endeavor and apologize if I come off that way
Qina Coldfire |
Qina would insist on helping and has a 75% chance to add +4 via Aid Another. I don't understand where the 175 comes from though.
In my real life games, I've always tried to build my home, be it the castle or the bat cave or something in between. It's never seemed like an opportunity in PbP, until now. Which is awesome.
Gad’larr Fireblood |
I'm not sure this matters much, but I have nothing against it, but not much to offer either.
Gad is too young and inexperienced (his opinion) to found his own monastery or similar. However, he's willing to support
the idea as much as you need.
=)
Belathorian Twice Born |
I love what you plan with fort Ferris, not only will it be a nice down time RP opportunity for a while but also it can be a point of reference for any other games we play, you're literally creating worlds!
That being said I don't really know where Bel fits with the scheme. Are you going to be training individuals or creating your own army?
I think the reason pathfinder doesn't have rules for fundraising is to stop people tooling up level 1 characters with crazy magic items.
I think we could use it as a hook for further adventures, we need to raise a lot of money so we become discretionary mercenaries/bounty hunters?
Vivian Ferris |
The 175 come from 160 being Vivs average summed over 10 rolls. Not a great method but I feel like making it easy is kind of cheating too.
My thought is to train individuals, not sure what we could do with an army but the means will be there if we ever decide we want one I guess.
Gad’larr Fireblood |
I was thinking it would be like a War College:
Wealthy students would pay for training, and those that can't afford to pay work for the college for 2 or 3 years afterward as payment for the training.
The indentured soldiers could be used for minor mercenary work guarding caravans, or supporting the nation's military in special missions. Each successful mission shaves time of each surviving trainee's serving time.
Make sense?

1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Sounds like Vivian is thinking Leadership feat at level 7...
My thought process is you go one project at a time. Our characters are still young and convincing anyone in town to follow your vision will be tough. But setting up and fortifying a guild hall as a place to make, gather, and store adventuring supplies is something you can do with your own land. Once the hall is established... and you have a little more clout in town I'm sure the rest of your plans will come to fruition... it's just a matter of time... developing and roleplaying relationships, and so forth...
Allister Sunscale |
The Dawnguard leadership may be willing to support Fort Ferris with enough convincing. Our cause does seem like something they could get behind. Perhaps they can provide financial support or supply us with teachers/masters-at-arms.
Perhaps a letter to Lightbringer Naabi is in order. Allister will need someone else to write it...because reasons.

Sound logic, I'm in. It gives us some good RP for the next three weeks too as I intend to stay active on this thread while we're down.
Have a good trip Fez!
