Anton Lukyanenko |
Anton absently replies, "Sure, why not? I guess that's why they gave us these packs, isn't it? Tents, stuff like that."
He seems to have been thinking very hard this afternoon, with his hands occasionally fluttering, and strange syllables rolling off his tongue.
He doesn't seem very concerned about the problems of spending a night in the forest.
DM Baktru |
Half a day's walk away from Kassen, there is no sign of civilization in sight. All you have around you is the Fangwood. Shadows start deepening as the sun is slowly setting, casting the forest in a glow of reddish hues.
Once again thanks to Goldilock's can't miss this roll Survival score...
As you are still walking along, looking around for a good camping spot, Goldi finds the perfect spot. A piece of perfectly flat ground near a bit of a cliff as one of the hills in the Fangwood rises sharply up. Furthermore, this spot is surrounded on two other sides by thick thickets of bushes and brambles.
As you eye this place however...
Aisling Frost-Wing |
Howling...Wolves or some form of canine. theyre getting closer, She keeps quiet over the course of the venture. Nibbling at some dried meat occasionally. she keeps her weapon drawn at almost all times. She wakes early, probably before everyone else.
Dc 5 Aisling cant fail
DM Baktru |
I'll assume you've made a pretty standard camp for the night? Tents, fire?
Gah that roll...
or maybe even Truffles wanders into the light circle of the campfire.
I assume at least someone will see the wolf with that abysmal stealth roll. Those who do can roll Initiative against the wolf's:
Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17
Jilhanna Meadbottom |
Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
Jilhanna shivers at the sound. "what is that? she asks plaintively.
"I'm not going to sleep very well with that stalking me! Does anyone want to share watches so we don't become some creature's midnight snack?"
After a hearty dinner, and a warm drink at the small campfire, Jilhanna crawls into a tent to await her turn at guard duty.
Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20
"It's a WOLF!!!!" she shouts when the sound of growls reaches her ears.
Initiative: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26
Ford Benett |
Ford keeps looking over at Anton as he as he seemed to be having a bit of an episode. Wizards are an odd bunch. Than again, he knew more about magic than him, so... better to have him on their side.
Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13
Ford listened and kept watch as he helped set up camp for the night. "Wolves, probably. If we're lucky, they'll find a meal and move on. If not... might have to deal with them. I'll take first watch. Who wants the next?"
Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21
The sight of a wolf entering the light of the camp fire catches Ford's eye as he stands up. "Wolf! On your feet, everyone! There's probably more out there!" Ford shouted, reaching for his bow and grabbing an arrow, waiting for the wolf to close in on them before shooting. Perhaps it would just wander off...
Initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
Readying an attack if the wolf (or any other wild animals) comes within 30 feet.
Readied Longbow: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 241d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8
Crit Confirm: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 191d8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
DM Baktru |
Ford, the link to the map is just under my name and updated. The Wolf is practically upon you... When you're sitting in the lightcircle of a campfire it's very hard to see anything outside...
Anton Lukyanenko |
Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21
Anton hears the sound in the distance, and decides that setting up rotating watches would be a good idea.
"I agree, Julhanna, we shouldn't let whatever that is come up to the camp without warning."
While awaiting the summons for guard duty, Anton is awakened by a closer sound.
Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10
'They're here!"
Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17
Anton grabs his cane and gets ready to throw it at the nearest wolf.
Aisling Frost-Wing |
percept: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17
Initiative: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24
Aisling draws her blade, even while sleeping or relaxing having had a hand on it. She see's it and attacks to scare it away. Wolf! She jumps to her feet and charges it immediately
attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18
damage: 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
Goldilocks "Sugarsnap" |
perception goldi: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (8) + 9 = 17
init: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10
wolf, maybe its just a little hungry, I can try and befriend it. give it a little bite to eat. I mean no point harming it unless we really, really, really have to, right?
Goldi moves closer next to Aisling. Truffles carefully by her side, ready to protect Goldi if anything goes awry.
Thinking to trying wild empathy to get the wolf to leave. offer some trail rations as a treat to try and improve its disposition.
handle animal w/ wild empathy: 1d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 4 + 1 = 19
DM Baktru |
Remind me to tell you what I was thinking here after the next bit...
As Goldi yells out Wait it's just hungry we can befriend it! and Jilhanna just loads a bullet, Aisling's reactions already kick into overdrive and she charges at the beast with her Starknife, landing a very nasty blow on its back.
The wolf yelps in pain, and runs off.
Withdraw action and a move, it moves 100 feet that way. Wolves are fast
DM Baktru |
Just a few minutes later you spot the same wounded wolf walking back into the furthest the light of the campfire goes with two other wolves.
The three wolves are sniffing the air, looking hesitant. Almost as if they know that you may be too much for them but... You have/are food... It looks like they're building up their courage to come and get something edible.
DM Baktru |
Note the campfire works as a torch. 20ft of normal light, another 20 of dim. The wolves are just inside the edge of the dim light.
Jilhanna Meadbottom |
"Goldi, you're right. They're just hangry!"
Jilhanna digs through the pouch at her waist, looking for scraps from the evening meal, which she hands to Goldi.
"Do your animal sweet-talk bit. Everybody is nicer if they're outside of a good meal."
Goldilocks "Sugarsnap" |
Goldi takes the food and slowly approaches the wolves looking as non-threatening as she can.
know nature: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (17) + 8 = 25
when she starts to get close enough for them to sense her, she stops and sits down. holding out the food.
its alright, I don't want to hurt you guys. you hungry.
handle animal with wild empathy: 1d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 4 + 1 = 6 great just went from friendly to wolf food i think
Ford Benett |
Being the farmhand that he was, Ford was more than ready to put an arrow in the wolves and send them running. They were predators, and if they didn't deal with them now, they'd be back. Besides, handing out food to wild animals only encouraged repeat business... and that usually spelled trouble.
But Goldi seemed to have her heart set on sending the creatures on their way with food. But... she seemed to be handling them like sweet, domesticated pets! That was not how you dealt with wild animals... especially hungry predators! Sighing, bow still in hand, he stepped up to glare down at the wolves and bark a command. "DOWN! NOW!" he ordered loudly, pointing a finger down to the ground to indicate his intent. It was important to show animals that YOU were the alpha of the group! That's how they know to listen to you!
Gonna use Handle Animal to try and push the animals to use the Down trick, get them to back down.
Handle Animal: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24
Oooooooh! If someone is willing to use Aid Another, that might actually work!
DM Baktru |
I've moved you all around on the map from these commands. Feel free by the way to move yourself on the map as well. Just delete your name where you were, put it back where you are. Those rolls BTW... Goldi missed the roll to make the wolf go away quietly by 1 the first time, and now Ford missed by 1 as well...
Wolf 2 hesitantly approaches Goldi, snatches the food from her and runs off with it. Wolf 1 (the wounded one) sees this happen and starts approaching then hears Ford yelling and backs down a bit, tail lowered.
Wolf 3 however, sees a much better prize in the form of a yummy little boar. It snarls and springs into action!
That one must be very hungry...
Wolves Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13
Wolf 1 will not act this round, he's cowed by Ford, for now. Anyone who beats the wolves initiative may act.
Goldilocks "Sugarsnap" |
init: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22
Truffles almost immediately sense Goldi is in trouble, and remembering the last command to defend her, Truffles leaps into action at the wolf.
gore atatck on the wolf: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19
gore damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Goldi stays behind her "protector" ready to help him if he becomes to dangerously injured.
readied CLW on truffles: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
Ford Benett |
Yikes! Sorry, got a tad sidetracked!
"Dammit! This is why you fend off predators, not make nice with them!" Ford swore, turning and aiming at the wolf headed for truffles and launching his ready arrow at it!
Longbow: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 161d8 ⇒ 8
By the by, if Ford ever gets his big predatory cat partner, that statement is gonna be amusingly ironic. And I absolutely approve of Goldi using it against him later.
Aisling Frost-Wing |
Exactly, i wanted to end it but the rest of you insisted on making nice or intimidation tactics! She attacks with her starknife charging forward
attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24
damage: 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
DM Baktru |
Sorry guys, update tomorrow. Mom called just as I got to work on the Pathfinder things and she tends to do long phone calls.
DM Baktru |
Okay battle with the two remaining wolves.
Missing initiative rolls:
Truffles: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Ford: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17
Anton: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21
Jilhanna: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20
Aisling: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23
Completing the initiatives, Goldi rolled 22.
The wolves have 13.
Aisling is the fastest to react, she sees the wolf turn hostile and charges it with her Starknife.
Miss chance dim light: 1d100 ⇒ 64
Aisling hits the wolf and cuts a big gash in its flank.
Goldi draws her wand of CLW and waits for what ever else happens.
Anton throws his cane at that same wolf. It's a bit harder now with Aisling and Truffles in the way, but it still hits the wolf square in the face.
Jilhanna fires a sling shot but it goes far over the combatants.
Ford fires an arrow at the wolf, but with Aisling suddenly in his line of fire, that's not so easy... Ford is trained at shooting into melee however and the arrow hits the wolf in his flank. Having been wounded by Aisling and Anton, the wolf goes down.
Wolf 1 doesn't do anything still cowering.
Truffles is angry by seeing a wolf try to bite him and attacks the last wolf. He runs up to the wolf and gores it with his tusks. That wolf that was already wounded goes down as Truffles tears a big gash in it's flank.
Combat over actually. Two dead wolves nearby and a third one ran away somewhere with some food.
DM Baktru |
The rest of the night, nothing much happens. None of you got hurt, quite surprisingly, in that wolf attack.
I do not know how well you all slept but I guess some may have been a bit shaken.
In the end though, the sun rises again in the forest and all of you are still there in one piece.
As you continue your trek towards the Crypt, the trees begin to thin, revealing a field of short, green grass that leads to the shores of a wide, calm lake reflecting the overcast sky above. A dense fog hangs over the center of the lake, obscuring the far side. Near the shore of the lake, a dark form lies next to the water.
DM Baktru |
Everyone gets another 240 XP for the three wolves, total is now 321.
Goldilocks "Sugarsnap" |
Goldi calms Truffles down. then kneels down over the wolves bodies. I'm sorry it came to this. they were only hungry, but sometimes you do what is needed.
Goldi has a little trouble sleeping the night, the events were rather stressful.
the travel the next day was exciting, as Goldi made it a point to try and identify every plant and insect along the way.
but reaching the lake her eyes go wide with excitement. that's probably the biggest pond I've ever seen. hey there's somebody over there! she says rushing over to see if she can help
hey mister you ok? you didn't try and drown did you?
DM Baktru |
That is what I have always done for Animal Companions. I cannot find an actual rule either way though. So yes, I prefer separate initiative for Truffles.
The dark shape looks to be a dead man, his upper torso covered with bitemarks that consist of sets of two circular bite marks some 10 cm apart each time.
His clothes are not of a style you have seen in Kassen.
Jilhanna Meadbottom |
Jilhanna walks over to the body, puzzled by someone here alone.
Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22

"Nice looking sword, well-made, but not by anyone from Kassen."
Appraise: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
She picks up the coin pouch and opens it
"Bunch of coins, too. Why don't we just share these? And how should we decide who gets the sword?"
DM Baktru |
There's 87 gold in the pouch.
You also notice that there seems to be something else along the shores of the lake some 500m to the east. Not the direction you were going though.
Anton Lukyanenko |
Anton looks around the shores of the lake. I wonder where this poor bastard came from?
Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21
Knowledge Local: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (4) + 0 = 4
Heal: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
"Why don't we split things six ways: one share for each person, plus a share for things like healing or burial that we might need as a group?" Anton suggests.
This time, we could each take 17 gold, and leave 2 gold in the emergency pouch.
Goldilocks "Sugarsnap" |
heal: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
skipped the rest as already discovered
As Goldi looks at the body, he's been here for months, wonder why nobody found him before now?[/b]
then as there is movement a short distance away, that may be the answer. maybe it best we gather what we can and move on, quickly. lets divvy things up later, ok.[/b]
DM Baktru |
It's not so much movement, there's just something that breaks up the nice sand at the beach some 500m east.
Goldi, you also realize that all those puncture wounds on this dead guy must have come from something like a giant snake. And some snakes are aquatic...
DM Baktru |
Note how you handle the loot you find is up to you all. You found 87 gold and a masterwork short sword. I run the monsters and the traps. And the NPCs. Loot is on your side. I do always suggest though, share it as equally as possible.
Ford Benett |
Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
Heal: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23
Ford knelt down, inspecting the body and studying it. "...something's wrong about this. He's been dead for months now... but his body has hardly been touched. And if last night is any indicator, there's no shortage of scavengers around here. Which begs the question: why?"
Ford stood back up, looking at the direction of the other end of the lake. "Goldi's right. Let's not linger... if he's still here by the time we get back, we'll give him a proper burial. But something about this feels... wrong." As a man of the church, a fair burial was something he should certainly see to... but his duty at the moment was ensuring the rest of the group was safe, and this had all sorts of bad news written on it.
Aisling Frost-Wing |
Fine with me, how are we handling the sword its good quality Looking toward the body with scrutiny Any number of reasons, Magic to preserve it for some reason, maybe it floated from somewhere, either way he's dead and we should be more cautious from here on out
Jilhanna Meadbottom |
"Why don't we let Aisling carry the sword for now. She can probably make the best use of it."
Jilhanna wrinkles her nose at the corpse.
"Eww. Something poked holes in him, but didn't eat him? How peculiar."
She looks up at the object further down the shore, and moves toward it.
"What's that?"
Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
