Under the withering glare of the Abadarian paladin, the collected knowledge reveals itself to cover not only necromancy and golemcraft - but there is a surprising number of books on diseases and plagues.

In fact, using the works collected here on topics of necromancy, golems and diseases gains a +2 circumstance bonus on the knowledge checks. The collection as a whole is worth around 300gp.

Additionally, Esmerelda discovers two scrolls, neatly detailed as scolls of identify and command undead respectively.

Male Human (Chelaxian) Cleric 3

Caulder fidgets, sighs loudly several times, and bounces the half-a-Shoanti in his handcart. "C'mon, Darkbane, time is money. We're burning valuable daylight -- assuming it's still day outside. We got sent to find a dead kid, not check out a damn library book."

Female Human (Varsian) Paladin 4

"Cleric. These books are evidence as to the necromancers intent and state of mind. See." Esme holds up some books "Necromancy! Golems! Diseases! Plagues!" Esme shakes her head "This necromancer is one sick individual"

"Pagrip, take these scrolls, perhaps they will be useful."

Pagrip happily helps to look through the books. "Morbid," he mutters, "but fascinating. What a trove!"

He takes the scrolls from Esmerelda without complaint. "Command undead could be particularly useful against the necromancer's servants," he says as he tucks them into his pack.

The room otherwise appears empty (other than a door leading off to the east). This leaves the new door, the barred door, and the passage in the prior room to explore.

For convenience: the map

Human (Varisian) Alchemist 3

"Shall we try this door?" Ten asks, pointing to the new door.

Female Human (Varsian) Paladin 4

"Go for it, Ten."

Ten has no trouble opening the door and is greeted by a nauseating mixture of decay and strange chemicals that fills the air of the large room beyond. Glinting saws, pliers, long stitching needles, and other surgical equipment are organized on shelves and benches along the walls. A sturdy wooden table in the center of the room supports a large humanoid shape—a thing stitched together from a patchwork of dozens of different bodies. The thing would stand nearly seven feet tall if it rose.

Male Human (Chelaxian) Cleric 3

"Top half of that thing look Shoanti?" Caulder asks.

Upon examination, part of the top half is Shoanti: the head.

Male Human (Chelaxian) Cleric 3

"I can't get that off with a morningstar," Caulder complains, contemplating his own weapon. "Grab one of those saws and let's get what we came for."

We got a physical description from the grandfather, right? This look like it's the right head?

Human (Varisian) Alchemist 3

Shrugging his shoulders, Ten grabs one of the saws. "Pagrip, Reginald, you might want to look away. 33, hold the body steady... that's it."

Heal (if necessary): 1d20 ⇒ 13

Ten, in typical pragmatic fashion, relieves the in-progress construct of its head. Death hasn't done any favors for the head, but it bears the distinctive Shoanti markings you expect and includes a prominent scar.

Pagrip grimaces, but doesn't turn away, as Ten removes the head from the body. "This necromancers is one messed-up bastard," he mutters. "When you have a whole body to begin with, what point is there to cutting it up and piecing it together with other body parts?" He shakes his head.

Female Human (Varsian) Paladin 4

"Whatever the reason, we must put a stop to this necromancer. While I accept the need for body retrieval, I find getting them in easy to carry parts is none too pleasant."

"Shall we see where that passage leads?"

Esmerelda leads the way, following her own suggestion by example. The chamber she finds holds a large fourposter bed and a simple writing desk, along with a full-length mirror propped up against one earthen wall.

Human (Varisian) Alchemist 3

After adding the head to the wheelbarrow, Ten wipes his hand across the front of his clothing as he follows Darkbane.

"A bedroom? Maybe our necromancer friend heard us approaching and hid under the bed."

Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23

Female Human (Varsian) Paladin 4

Esme checks under the bed.

Perception: 1d20 ⇒ 18

"Found anything interesting over there?"

Against all expectations neither Ten nor Esmerelda find a necromancer cowering under the bed or elsewhere in the room.

Perception DC 22:

But now there is some arcane mumbling audible to the east beyond the room.

DM rolls:

1d20 ⇒ 15
1d20 ⇒ 12
1d20 ⇒ 3

Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11

"Well, this is what I call a high-class establishment," Pagrip comments as he looks around the world, his words dripping with sarcasm. "Who wouldn't want a nice four poster bed in the middle of a dungeon?"

Male Human (Chelaxian) Cleric 3

Perception 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12

"Unless the middle bit of our Shoanti is in there, I don't care," Caulder opines. "Arresting the necromancer is a bonus; the mission is to return this idiot to his idiot grandfather. Suppose he has another one of those monstrosities around he might have used the torso on? Although, really, if you need a head and a torso, why go to the trouble of cutting them apart and using them separately? Just a lot of busy work."

A hissing and altogether too quiet voice angrily sputters at the party, "tssss! Whattss you do in masstterrss bed?!" An angry madder-than-usual looking derro floats near the ceiling of the room beyond. An eldritch dark energy seems to surround the creature.

Male Human (Chelaxian) Cleric 3

"Looking for some missing parts to a dead Shoanti," Caulder replies warily. "You file it under T for torso or C for chest?"

Human (Varisian) Alchemist 3

"A for abdomen," Ten adds helpfully.

Apparently the irony is lost on the voice as it mutters madly: "Defiilerrsss!"

The flying derro mumbles words of power, his words barely stop and a thick beam of black-tinged fire thrusts out of his hand into Esmerelda's chest.

Scorching ray, ranged touch vs flat Esmerelda 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11 damage 4d6 ⇒ (1, 5, 6, 2) = 14

Initiative:

Esmerelda 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 1 = 11
Caulder 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (2) + 0 = 2
Ten 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 1 = 11
Pagrip 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
Vreeg 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18

Tie breaker:
Esmerelda 1d20 ⇒ 6
Ten 1d20 ⇒ 19

The derro cackles madly into the stunned silence that follows - swiftly more arcana escape its lips before anybody else can react, then: "Nothings you seess, dwaarfss!"

Pagrip fortitude vs blindness, DC 16 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2

With that the world around Pagrip falls into darkness that even his eyes cannot pierce.

Next up: Ten, Esmerelda, Pagrip, Caulder, Vreeg

Human (Varisian) Alchemist 3

"Pagrip, Darkbane, get back!" Ten yells as he forces his way to the north-east corner of the room. Glancing around the corner at the derro, Ten readies one of his explosives. "Let's see you try that again."

Ready action to bomb derro should he try to cast a spell:
Attack 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
Damage 2d6 + 2 ⇒ (4, 5) + 2 = 11
Missed grenade 1d8 ⇒ 6
[ooc]Splash 4 DC 13

HP: 22; Con 12; AC 15, T 11, F 14, CMD 16, Bombs 3, Extracts still prepared: cure light wounds, enlarge person

To help clarify: the derro is flying 15ft above the ground; the ceiling is at 20ft. Standing on the ground medium characters can reach 8ft with their attacks, meaning they need to cover an additional 7ft vertical height before they can melee attack the derro.

Next up: Esmerelda, Pagrip, Caulder, Vreeg, Ten

Female Human (Varsian) Paladin 4

Esme draws her greatsword "D for Dead or S for Shoanti parts?"

Female Human (Varsian) Paladin 4

Esme runs up to almost below the floating fool and throws her greatsword at its exposed underparts.

Greatsword throw: 1d20 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 - 4 = 15
Greatsword damage: 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (4, 4) + 6 = 14

"Come down here you coward!"

2hp

With just a barest misjudgment the paladin's massive sword misses the derro. It rebounds of the ceiling clangs heavily to the floor just a square south of Esmerelda.

Next up: Pagrip, Caulder, Vreeg, Ten, Esmerelda

Sorry for the delay, folks. Another busy weekend.

"I can't see!" Pagrip yells. "Damn bastard made me blind!" He stumbles back towards what he remembers being the opposite side of the room.

Acrobatics check to move at full speed DC 10: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (6) + 9 = 15
Success! (Don't really know why I bothered since he can't fail, but at least it means he succeeds at something for a change. :)

On reaching the wall, he casts haunted fey aspect on himself.

AC 10; HP 12/18; DR 1/cold iron; blind

Male Human (Chelaxian) Cleric 3

"Fall back, Darkbane!" Caulder commands, loading his crossbow. "He doesn't have what we're looking for; no need to die here."

Draw crossbow; load crossbow

The angered derro follows Ten's taunt; it flits along the ceiling - half flying half a mad scrabble. Then it turns one baleful eye on the alchemist and squeeks, "Know your place!" His voice carries the stink of tainted magic, and Ten doesn't hesitate to lob his grenade. He's rewarded with an impressive boom that leaves a nasty char on the top corner wall, but nobody is harmed in the process.

Ten's Will save vs cause fear DC 15 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21

Ten's too angry at himself for wasting a valuable incendiary resource to take much note of the terrifying visages that temporarily huddled in his mind.

Next up: Ten, Esmerelda, Pagrip, Caulder, Vreeg

Male Human (Chelaxian) Cleric 3

Ten just took his readied action, which means that his initative shifts to before Vreeg's; he doesn't get to act again right afterwards. Should be Esmerelda's turn.

Pagrip moved to the opposite side of the room (by that, I meant the west side, although I wasn't that clear, I suppose). Don't deny me my one success! :)

Male Human (Chelaxian) Cleric 3

Also, Esmerelda moved to within one range increment to throw her sword, as specified here, and Ten said he moved to the northeast corner. Looks like maybe that's an old link or the map didn't update properly?

Oops - I updated the image, but didn't actually upload it - so the link still showed the old map. It's updated now:

Human (Varisian) Alchemist 3

You wouldn't like Ten when he's angry. :P

Ten spits on the floor, illustrating his dislike of wasting explosives.

"Reginald, extract 325," Ten commands. The dutiful hedgehog complies, climbing up Ten's face and emptying a small vial into the alchemist's mouth. Enlarge person.

As Ten grows, he draws his longspear and points it menacingly at the derro. "I had a lecturer that would say the same thing to me. I never listened to him."

Female Human (Varsian) Paladin 4

Esme takes out her light crossbow and loads it.

"Fine. I will stay here."

HP 2; Con 14; AC 18, T 12, F 16; CMD 17, 1 lay amd smite remaining

The derro is momentarily flustered as the growing alchemist and his spear immediately come precariously close to him.

Next up: Pagrip, Caulder, Vreeg, Ten, Esmerelda

Pagrip grumbles.

Delay.

Male Human (Chelaxian) Cleric 3

Caulder releases the bolt from his crossbow in the direction of the floating derro, then reloads the weapon.

Attack 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14 damage 1d8 ⇒ 1; move action: reload

The flying creature sputters in incoherent rage then finally weaves through the air cautiously to avoid the massive long spear that threatens him - his words are unclear but definitely magical as a faint glow on his fingers suggests.

Cast spell defensively 1d20 ⇒ 12 success

Ten's Will save vs sleep DC 14 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7

With almost no perceptible intermediate steps Ten flunks to the floor fast asleep. A bit of the tincture he just drank already forms a lick of drool around the one corner of his mouth.

Next up: Esmerelda, Caulder, Vreeg, Ten (asleep)
Pagrip delays

"Reginald! Wake up Ten! Reginald? You can understand me, right?"

Esmerelda's shot goes wide, but on Ten's shoulder there stirs a lump. A sickly fleshy tentacle extends from it and a solid wack follows as it the tentacle slaps Ten to consciousness.

Next up: Caulder, Vreeg, Ten, Esmerelda
Pagrip delays

Male Human (Chelaxian) Cleric 3

Shoot and reload.
