Forgot about that Maudrill. Right you are. We've got it now, but I'll try to remember to have Yeks try too in the future. Yeks is ready to go.

Cheiton's House
The next day passes uneventfully. With Cheiton's help you are able to procure the last items and provisions you think you'll need for your trek into the wilderness. The evening follows much as before, Cheiton preparing a meal, people making quiet plans for setting off in the morning, followed by a round or two of toasts to the expedition. Nkechi and Zaghigoth repair outside to sleep under the stars, while the rest of you find rooms upstairs.

It is not until late at night that events happen. The moon has hidden behind clouds, when in the deepening darkness Hskoro wakes. From where he was dozing in the hallway beside the door to Quinta and Cat's room, he hears a scrabbling outside the window, and someone muttering something. Instantly alert, he springs to his feet, just in time to see a leering Mwangi face gazing in at through the upper story window. The man raises a knife and smashes the glass, while Hskoro shouts down the hallway, "We are attacked!"

His cry rouses several of you, Rowena, Yekskya, and Maudrill stumbling out of the bedrooms into the hallway. Zaghigoth and Nkechi become aware of the commotion as well. The druid rises to his feet while Nkechi seems surprisingly quick on his feet, despite having ingested more of his concoctions. From their vantage point they can spy one or two men at the far corner of the house, climbing the wall and vines to reach Quinta and Rowena's room. Another man comes around the same corner, a wand in his hand. He stops as he spies the two men watching him.

Right. I rolled Perception checks and initiative for the group. Cat, Yekskya, Hskoro, Zaghigoth, Maudrill, and Nkechi all get to take a surprise action before we go into regular initiative. The map provided below perhaps unfortunately only provides the upper story plan for Cheiton's house. Assume that downstairs is for the most part open plan with entrance area, cooking and dining areas, with separate pantry, jake, and storage. I've indicated on the map with yellow squares where the two doors are on the ground floor. The door to the south is considered the back door. Those of you with a surprise round can start with a weapon/item in hand.

Looking sidelong down the house, Zag can see at least one man climbing the wall. He also spots vines on the wall, and furrows his brow, gesturing forth with his holly-and-mistletoe-laden spear. "Bind them!" he calls to the spirits, a greenish light dancing along the shaft of the weapon.

Cast sickening entanglement on the corner of the wall I can see with the enemies climbing it, assuming the wall there has the vines you mentioned. This spell functions as entangle, so a 40-ft radius burst from that corner of the house should then also affect the vines I cannot see on the south side of the house, where the other two guys are climbing (again, assuming there are vines there). Reflex save DC 16 to avoid being entangled this round. Whether or not they pass or fail, being in the area subjects them to a Fortitude save DC 16 or be sickened for as long as they are in the entangled area, plus 1d4 rounds after.

Is this game still alive? I believe we're waiting on some player posts.

The Exchange

Yep game's still on the go. Going pretty well I thought. I think the only player currently MIA is Rowena, I was giving Werner a chance to post but it could be he's on vacation or tied up at the moment. I'm going to NPC Rowena until we hear otherwise.

Surprise Round
Cat glances over at Hskoro, who with a nod indicates trouble outside. Rapier in hand, she goes up and down the corridors, rapping on the doors and walls to call everyone to arms. Readied action to attack any opponents entering the landing.

Yekskya snaps up his bow and a handful of arrows. Spying a figure lurking outside the upper story window across the landing, he quickly notches an arrow and lets fly. The arrow shatters the window, hitting the attacker in the chest nearly with enough force to blast him from the window ledge. The marauder clings on though. 18 points damage from the thistle window.

Hskoro charges into the bedroom being shared by Rowena and Quinta. He pulls Quinta out of bed and tries to interpose himself between the singer and the windows, of which there are two in the corner room.

Zaghigoth reacts to the situation calmly, causing the vines on the nearby buildings to writhe and reach out to grab the attackers. The spell covers a vast area, engulfing not only the man at grand level in front of him, but two attackers climbing the corner of the Cheiton's house as well. The man on the ground and one of the climbers are quickly entangled, the other climber swinging out of the way. However, Zaghigoth's magic has caused the vines to exude an itchy resin, and the two climbers are affected. As above, two of the three were entangled, with the two climbers sickened to boot.

Maudrill steps out onto the landing. The aasimar summons a flaming sphere, conjuring it outside just below the shattered window and the attacker clinging to its ledge. I thought it might be difficult to summon the sphere outside a window you don't have line of sight to, so hope that is alright to place it outside the closest instead. It may prove advantageous as well.

Nkechi snaps up his trident, holding it warily. He grunts in approval at the effect of Zaghigoth's spell, but refrains from going any closer to engage the entangled attacker close by. The man appears to be a fellow Mwangi native, clad in dark leathers.

Round 1
Having tried to rouse everyone, Cat springs over to the smashed window. She plies her rapier and stabs the fellow trying to climb in through the window. A small stab, but nearly enough to bring the man down. Marauder hit for 3 points damage.

Okay on to regular initiative! Have at 'em!

Updated Map - Shows the extent of Zag's sickening entangle spell, and the circle outside the east window is Maudrill's flaming sphere. It's actually beneath the climbing attacker, not burning him but he's probably getting hot feet. Again the yellow squares indicate the location of the ground level doors to the house.

The night passed peacefully enough at first. Quinta retired to her room early so she could meditate in private, Ssss the only witness when the Chelishgirl gratefully stripped off her clothes and sat down on the floor in the nude.

"Bloody heat. Bloody humidity," the Sorceress sighed, lightly stroking her familiar's back as he coiled around her neck.
Meditations done, she just crawled into bed and lay there, waiting for sleep to overcome the discomfort caused by the heat. Finally sleep came, and with it disturbing dreams of home. Even in her dreams, Quinta grimaced and mumbled unhappily.

'They can't know I'm here. They can't possibly...'

Then came all the shouting, and Quinta sits bolt upright due to the sudden, crashing intrusions into her bedroom.

"Whu-what?!" she sputters, one arm rising to cover her body. The other arm, however, is already reaching under her pillow. When Quinta's sleep-fogged eyes focus on the marauder in the window, that arm comes round - and Quinta's magical whip unrolls with a sharp 'Crack!'

"Gentlemen don't enter a lady's bedroom uninvited, you scunner!" she shouts, angrily.

Round 1 continued
Yekskya calls Rowena away from the window and lets another arrow fly. The attacker looks up just in time to see the arrow coming at him, hitting him in the heart and killing him instantly. The man's body peels away from the ledge and falls through Maudrill's flaming sphere, incinerated. Direct hit, target takes 18 points damage plus the 1 point from the first arrow. Dead.

Hskoro, having barged into Quinta's room and taken up a defensive posture between her and the windows, seems to notice for the first time her nudity. "Mistress, this is not the time for undress. Please clothe yourself immediately. We are under attack." The nagaji risks one further glance back at her slender form, what passes for an eyebrow raised. Just how do nagaji regard the human form?

Krolmnite wakes up, snatches his greatsword, and stumbles out into the corridor. The rest of you quickly fill him in on what is happening. I figure you can easily grab a weapon or item as you are standing up, so you can do that and take a move action.

Having struggled into her outfit, the Chelishgirl raises her hands to eye height, palms up, and sets up a droning chant. As her eyes stare into unknown distances, so her voice seems to bounce off unseen surfaces and spirals into the Void...

Quinta starts casting Summon Monster II!

Zag moves forward with Oshok'arr to the edge of the entanglement field and once more gestures forward with his spear, calling on the aid of the spirits of plant and seed.

"Grow and thicken."

Cast plant growth, using the overgrowth option. Centering the spell on the same enemy at the corner of the house, all vegetation I designate within a 100-ft radius circle becomes thicker and overgrown. I am designating only the plants affected by sickening entanglement. In this area, speed now drops to 5 ft. per round, and all DCs involving sickening entanglement (to resist being entangled and to resist the poison) increase by 4, raising those DCs to 20. Further, at the end of my turn, anyone not affected by entangle that is still in the area makes another save vs the effects, now at the DC 20.

After casting his spell and turning the south side of the house into a veritable wall of poisonous jungle, Zag calls out in the night. "Things go poorly for you, I say. Your pack is thinning. Surrender now!"

Zaghigoth moves to the edge of the entangled area, Oshok'arr in tow. He gestures forth with his spear, uttering three words: "Grow and thicken." Despite saying them quietly, the words seem to resound in the night. The entangling vines and shrubs seem to bulge and expand, just about crushing those already in their grip. The attacker on the ground who was holding the wand manages to escape their grasp and starts looking for a way out of the trap. Cheiton's house (and those nearby that are affected) seem to groan under the weight of the foliage. What devious spell casting! Just because the NPCs rolled a worse initiative than the entire party, give 'em a chance! :P Rerolled entanglement for the three, the two climbing the wall are entangled but the first one on the ground miraculously managed the save. The two on the wall are also sickened.

Hskoro tries not to look as Quinta struggles into clothing starts chanting a spell. She calls out to the denizens across the planes, calling for their aid.

With all the ruckus, Cat calling everyone to arms, windows smashing, plant tendrils squeezing the house, Cheiton wakes up. The dwarf emerges from his room and steps out into the hallway, nonplussed. "What in Torag's name is going on around here? If I'd known you all were going to cause this much of a racket I would have had you stay in an inn!" He grabs up a decorative short sword on display on the wall.

Round 1 continued
Quick as thought Maudrill summons another flaming sphere. He commands the first one to roll clock-wise around the house. You hear a yell and realize it has run into another rogue trying to climb up to upper story windows. The man takes some serious burns, but manages to hold on. After simmering in place for a moment, Maudrill sends the second careening around the house as well, and it finds the man's companion. He's a bit more agile than his friend, and manages to dodge the flames. Combining your last two posts as had already NPC'd an action for Maudrill during the surprise round, and thought this would be simpler than trying to retcon. First fireball hits one of the rogues both times, for total of 18 points of fire damage. The second flaming sphere tries to hit his friend but he made both saves.

Nkechi turns towards the man entangled at ground level. He waves a hand and powerful winds buffet the man, beating him down. Nkechi attacks nearest foe with storm burst ability, dealing 8 points of nonlethal damage.

Trying to avoid the oversized vegetation the marauders continue to try to find a way inside the building to fight you. The man on the ground breaks free of his bindings and slowly tries to move ahead towards the two nature casters. The second rogue still lies entangled, while the other three all manage to shatter nearby windows and enter the home. One of them breaks into Quara's room, only to meet with one of Hskoro's fists as the nagaji had been waiting for enemies to be entering. 4 points damage to the rogue.

Zaghigoth spies a figure approaching from up the street. He has dark hair and eyes, short beard, Chelish features but with slightly pointed ears. He speaks in a cultured voice: "Greetings! I like what you've done with the place. Gives it that whole call of the wild look. Say, why don't you stick around for a while?" With that he mutters an incantation and the ground begins to open up beneath Zaghigoth, Oshok'arr, and Nkechi to reveal a deep pit! Round 2 continued
Directing Rowena to open all the doors, Yekskya rushes forward towards the nearest sound of intruders. Peering through the doorway to Cheiton's room, he finds two attackers making their way across the floor. His bow snaps up and he plants an arrow full into one opponent's chest. 16 points of damage to the north-most of the two assailants.

Hskoro tussles with the attacker trying to climb through the window in Quinta's room, landing a telling kick and chop. The invader puts up a game fight, but seems sickened by Zaghigoth's plant spell. 12 points damage to the attacker from two successful hits by Hskoro.

Eager to get into the fight, Krolmnite rushes past Yekskya into Cheiton's room and charges one of the attackers. The assailant didn't seem to be expecting such a fearsome attack from the gnome and is quickly cut down. 12 points damage to the south-most of the two attackers is enough to put him down.

Enemy magic causes the ground beneath Zaghigoth, Oshok'arr, and Nkechi to collapse into a gaping pit. Oshok'arr teeters on the edge, but Zaghigoth shoves the dinosaur and Nkechi free from danger.

Zaghigoth's up, and we can get Maudrill's action in too.

Updated Map - 4 marauders left, plus the newcomer in the upper left corner.

Zag and Oshok'arr both sense the pit opening beneath them and leap away just in time to avoid being swallowed by it. Zag lands in a crouched position and raises his gaze to the new threat. "You should never announce yourself to your prey, I say! Does not make for good hunting!" The druid touches Oshok'arr with the tip of his spear, bathing the iguanodon in a brief flash of white-green light and then gestures towards the man with the spear.. "Attack!" At his command, Oshok'arr charges forward, barreling towards the enemy with a threshing claw.

Cast magic fang on Oshok'arr and move 10 feet towards the man, away from the pit.

Cheiton's House - Round 2 continued
Facing the new foe, Zaghigoth shouts a challenge to the spellcaster. He summons the jungle spirits and touches Oshok'arr with the tip of his spear, bestowing magical energy to the iguanodon's attacks. Honking, Oshok'arr charges forward, barrelling towards the enemy and attacking with a sharp threshing claw. The spellcaster ducks away, and the claw passes harmlessly overhead.

Quinta completes her summoning spell and a white-furred, dark striped celestial hyena appears in the room. She commands it to attack the intruder; the man screams in abject terror but somehow seems to squirm away from the animal's bite. Quinta's not finished yet. She cracks her whip, raising a stinging welt on the man's face. 2 points damage to the intruder from Quinta.

Cheiton charges back into his room, covered by Yekskya. Brandishing his short sword, he stabs at one of the pair of intruders, trading blows but not managing to score a hit.

Maudrill concentrates on his pair of flaming bursts. He directs them to roll their way around the house, burning vines and parts of the house before they find the luckless intruder entangled in the vines outside Quinta's & Cat's room. The bursts engulf the man, burning him to within an inch of his life. He would have made his saves, if he hadn't been simultaneously entangled and sickened, instead taking 27 points fire damage.

Nkechi calls on the power of Gozreh for protection, warding himself from attacks. Cast Sanctuary.

The interloper on the ground tries to dodge the grasping vines and plants, heading for the front door to Cheiton's house. The going is slow. As he moves, he pulls out of a shirt pocket a small stone, which he throws towards Zaghigoth and Nkechi. It hits the lip of the pit and splits with a roar like a thunderclap. Nkechi puts his hands to his ears, wincing at the sound. Successfully saved to avoid becoming re-entangled. Threw a thunderstone, Zag please can you make a Fortitude save against DC 15 to avoid becoming deafened for one hour. This also means a -4 penalty to intiative and a 20% chance of miscasting any spell with a verbal component. If any of Cheiton's neighbors had managed to sleep through the fight thus far, they'e awake now.

The second intruder, horribly burned with skin cracked and peeling and what healthy skin there is covered in itchy rashes from the entangling vines, tries to struggle out of their vice-like grip but he lacks the strength to do so. Still entangled.

The two attackers engaged in melee on the upper floor of the house engage, wielding a short sword dripping with venom in one hand and a cruel looking punching dagger in the other. The first splits his attacks between slashes at Hskoro and the celestial hyena, while the second focuses his attacks on Cheiton. None of the attacks seem to hit however.

The spellcasting newcomer takes a step back from Oshok'arr, giving himself breathing space to summon and hurl a ball of acid. It falls short though, splattering on the ground at the dinosaur's feet. You don't like though how he is casting knowing looks at the roof of the building beside Cheiton's.

The reason he was doing that soon becomes obvious, as with a high pitched whine an enormous creature pads into view from the shadows on top of the roof. Its shape vaguely resembles that of a mountain lion, but with two many eyes and a mouth full of razor shoarp teeth. It pads across the rooftop and hurls itself down onto Zaghigoth, pouncing and biting and clawing. Charging and using pounce ability. Bite attack and one of its claws hit, for a total of 18 points damage. Due to the charge, creature is currently -2 to AC. The creature basically resembles a nexu from Attack of the Clones.

DC 15 Knowledge arcana or planes:

This creature is not natural, and does not come from this world. Your best guess is that it is a construct, an eidolon summoned to this plane.

Round 2
Following Yekskya's advice, Rowena goes about, opening all the doors on the upper floor, making sure no more intruders are hiding.

Over to Yekskya and Krolmnite.

Hunched in the doorway, Yekskya fires two arrows at the intruder beset by Cheiton. Surprisingly, both arrows miss, thunking into the wall above his head. Cheiton growls. "Hey! Watch the furnishings!"

In Quinta's room, Hskoro hisses as he flattens his palm and jams it twice into the face of the intruder stood before him. The Mwangi's head snaps back as he stumbles, and falls through the window. 2 hits, dealing 10 hit points total damage.

Krolmnite moves across the room to get at the intruder Yekskya just shot at. He swings with his sword as he charges, but the man manages to jump out of the way of the blade.

Zaghigoth and Quinta up!

Not much change to the map, so will post one up next time. Only one intruder left upstairs, in Cheiton's room. One more outside at ground level, and another entangled outside Quinta's room. Then the spellcasting newcomer and his pet beastie.

Sorry for the delay there CHH. I thought I had posted and was waiting for my turn to come up again.

Rushing onward I check all the doors in the house in search of more intruders.

Not sue if there are more intruders that I haven't found yet. If no more turn up, I'll run to where the sounds of fighting are the loudest

The Exchange

Sorry to keep everyone waiting. It's birthday season around our household, so I got a bit preoccupied with other things. On with the program!

Round 2 continued
Oshok'arr honks as the iguanadon rounds on the enemy spellcaster and lashes out with her spiked thumbs. The dinosaur's attack hits, but some sort of forcefield enveloping the caster seems to blunt the attack so that the attack is not as lethal as it could have been. Even more disconcerting, as Oshok'arr's thumb spike gouges the caster in the shoulder, on contact with air his blood seems to thicken into a plate as hard as iron, protecting his shoulder and chest. Damage noted! Though since your action is before Quinta's I'm not sure you and Oshok'arr get her inspire courage bonus this turn. Though considering her window is smashed through at least you should be able to hear it.

Zaghigoth meanwhile lowers his shield and tries to fend off the beast that is trying to slash him to pieces with wicked-looking claws and snapping jaws. His whole being is focused on the task, but some part of his mind is trying to puzzle out just what the creature is, it doesn't seem to conform to any creature type that he knows.

Upstairs and inside, Quinta grins at Hskoro's victory. She takes off at a run, with her summoned hyena loping beside her. Double move puts you on the stairs. You should reach the main entrance with a standard move next turn.

Cheiton thrusts his blade at the enemy that had broken into his room, stabbing the man with his short sword. 3 points of damage to the intruder.

Maudrill? Where are those flaming spheres going to pop up next? :)

Updated map - Not many changes since the last map update. There are three of the original intruders left, one in Cheiton's room, one entangled on the wall outside Quinta & Cat's room, and the one with the wand at ground level, plus the spellcaster and his pet.

Actually we're on Round 2 just now, the first flaming sphere should fizzle on your turn in Round 4 as it was conjured during the surprise round. The second flaming sphere should disappear your turn in Round 5.

Male Emberkin Aasimar (Truespeaker) Arcanist 5

Yup, I'm pretty lost on combat lol. Maudrill will just keep slamming the nearest enemies with the flaming spheres until one runs out.

Sounds good. The two spheres are already on one guy, so can focus on him. Do you want to go ahead and roll damage, or would you prefer that to be a GM roll?

Round 2 continued
Maudrill focuses his mind on the two flaming spheres whizzing about outside the house. They seemed to make contact with someone out there, so to begin with he converges the spheres on that space. The first seems to miss, but by moving the second just a little more that way he hears a satisfying cry come through one of the open windows. If he could have had a view outside, he'd see the intruder hanging outside Quinta's window, sickened and entangled, and now burnt to a crisp. The fellow made his Reflex save against the first save despite numerous penalties, but fell prey to the second one; 9 points fire damage puts him well into the minuses.

Nkechi uses his powers over nature to condense the moisture in the air into a small personal rainstorm and sends it over the other-worldly creature attacking Zaghigoth. Winds and rain whip the feline critter's fur and buffet its body. It growls in protest and digs sharp claws into the ground to keep from being blown away. Nkechi uses his weather domain storm burst ability, hitting the eidolon with 7 points of nonlethal damage.

The intruder in Cheiton's room looks ready to quit this enterprise. He tries a desperate lunge at Cheiton with a short sword, blade slick with something vile. The one outside holding the wand decides enough is enough and is trying to make a getaway, but movement through the enlarged entangling vegetation is slow at best.

The enemy spellcaster takes a step back from the reach of Oshok'arr's claws. Drawing out a strip of red cloth he conjures a whip that seems to be constructed from living, swarming spiders. He snaps the whip at the iguanodon, but fortunately misses the dinosaur. 5 foot step back to cast spell.

Round 3
Rowena runs through the house, looking for more marauders. There's the one fighting Krolmnite and Cheiton, but apart from that all the fighting seems to be happening down in the streets outside. Down the stairs, following Quinta and her summoned hyena. Downstairs, out either the main entrance or back door.

Yekskya puts an end to the scuffle in Cheiton's room with a well-placed arrow. It skewers Krolmnite's and Cheiton's opponent and he drops to the floor. First arrow is enough to take the man down, unconscious on death's door.

Hskoro mutters and curses in Nagaji as he turns and runs after Quinta, following right on the heels of Rowena.

Krolmnite looks down at the man felled by Yekskya's arrow. There would be no talk of surrender now. Grim. But his heart leaps as he hears the fighting outside, and he leaps to join the ruckus. A double move brings you right behind Hskoro and the others. A full round of running next turn should get you to either of the downstairs exits.

Ok back to Zag, Quinta and Maudrill.

Zag watches the fight between Oshok'arr out of the corner of his eye as he fends off the beast, and takes a step away from the strange pet as he does so. Oshok'arr continues her assault on the mage, lashing out again with wicked claw. After she attacks, Zag conjures down a rain of stones down upon the man, denying his tactical retreats by turning the ground behind him into rubble.

Oshok'arr moves 5 feet forward and attacks, Zag moves 5 feet away from the beast and uses Stone Call, centered 40 feet behind the man if possible. That would create a 40 foot radius of difficult terrain with him right on the edge, preventing him from making 5-ft. steps.
