Round 8 continued
Zaghigoth and Shiv team up against the cannibal warrior in front of them. The half-orc druid attacks high while the crocodile aims for the legs. The heavily tattooed warrior is unable to deflect both attacks, and is grievously wounded in the process. 8 points of damage to the cannibal.

Seeing the two skeletons shambling forwards towards the defenders, Grym strikes out with a sweep of his greataxe, intending to smash the bones of one skeletal horror. However, with a loud clang the skeleton parries his slice with a rusty cutlass.

Aerys, seeing Rowena under attack, rushes over to help. The half-elf is still holding on to her shortbow, but runs up behind the warrior and aims a swift jab at his kidneys from behind with her free fist. 4 points of damage to the cannibal attacking Cat.

Round 9
As Rowena suddenly drops low to swap weapons, the savage attacking her makes a clumsy lunge to attack which is further foiled by Aerys' attack. Rowena then follows up with a lunge of her own, the point of her rapier taking the hapless warrior in the stomach. He falls over, dying. 6 points of damage to the fine young cannibal.

With that threat down, Yekskya turns his attention to the next closest cannibal, felling him with two deft shots. As the man dies, the writhing plants hold his body to the earth in a deadly embrace. 17 points of damage to the cannibal, he's dying as well.

Suddenly there is a shriek from the woman natives gathered around their leader as the big warrior, mortally wounded, breathes his last. ( The mighty Klorak has fallen! ). The warrior women are enraged at the loss of their mate, but also frustrated by their inability to get at you through the entanglement field.

The lone warrior left fighting against Zaghigoth, Grym, and Shiv suddenly panics and turns to flee from the battle, but his flight is cut short as the skeleton climbing over the wall at last scuttles down this side of the compound and one of the skeletons coldly cuts the warrior down. The other two skeletons take swipes at Shiv and Grym but are unable to get past their defenses. Elsewhere, the fourth skeleton finally manages to pull himself out of the entangled patch within its compound, shambling off mindlessly to join the attack. The cannibal takes 4 points of damage from one of the skeletons, and is now disabled.

The crone continues to flee, disappearing into the jungle to the south.

"Zag and Grym, are you ok with the skeletons? It looks like their chief is dead, but his followers are getting ready to come after us so I'm going to attempt to keep after them." Yekskya steps 5 feet to the south and fires a pair of arrows at the center cannibal.

Flashing a quick grin at Aerys in appreciation for her help in dispatching the cannibal, I cast a look around to see how we are faring against our enemies. Seeing we seem to have things well in hand, I sheath my rapier and pick up my bow again. Drawing an arrow from my quiver and nocking it, I take a bead on one of the cannibals as well and let fly. With a satisfied nod, I see the arrow thud into my target's chest, eliciting a loud scream of pain that reaches easily across the battlefield. "There! Take that! When I'm done with you, I'll be going to hunt me a crone. That old hag has a date with death. And I intend to see her make it without further delay."

Zag plants his spear in the ground in a show of defiance, remembering his last encounter with the skeletal undead. As he snatches up his club, he looks over his shoulder and replies to Yekskya. "No abomination will stand while I breathe, I say." Despite the fervor in his voice, the druid cannot hide the labor in his breathing. Eying Shiv he issues a new command. "Bring it down!" He clenches his teeth and tightens his grip on the club.

Gonna have Shiv attempt to trip the Skeleton in front of me. He provokes an AoO for doing so. I will then try to attack the Skeleton, getting a +4 on my roll if it goes prone.

Round 9 continued
With a sweep of his tail, Shiv manages to swipe the skeleton in front of Zaghigoth off its feet, sending it to the ground. As it clatters in a heap though, it manages to rake the crocodile with its bony fingers, gouging big weals in his hide. Zaghigoth tries to take advantage of the skeleton's prone position to smash it to pieces, but cannot seem to connect with the thing. Shiv was successful in CMB attempt to knock skeleton prone. Skeleton made a successful attack of opportunity, hitting Shiv for 4 points of damage. Zag unfortunately wasn't able to follow up with a solid hit, despite skeleton's prone position.

Grym tries to pull off a similar feat, lunging into the nearest skeleton with a powerful swipe of his greataxe. He hits at just the right angle, cutting through the skeleton's rib cage, hips and legs, and the skeleton collapses into a pile of bones. Grym hits, causing 5 points of damage to the skeleton.

Aerys tries to follow Yekskya's lead, snatching up her bow again and sending an arrow at one of the barbarian consorts. The arrow arcs over their heads, to land behind.

Round 10
Rowena follows suit, also taking up her bow and aiming for the cannibals. Her arrow hits one of the women in the thigh, and she laboriously stoops to pull the arrow out. Rowena hits one of the cannibals for 5 points of damage.

Yekskya manages to hit the center cannibal with two arrows, with his expert aim hitting her in the chest. She goes down, dying. Yekskya hits for 15 points of damage.

Under the withering hail of arrows, the consorts have no choice but to retreat. They drag the body of their chieftain through one of the doorways in the camp, disappearing inside. The consorts have retreated insode the hut (covered in orange) closest to the pen labelled V7 on the map.

The skeletons continue to swarm about the others. The prone skeleton struggles to rise to its feet, drawing the attention of Shiv, Zaghigoth, and Grym. Grym manages to lop off its head with his greataxe, and the skeleton falls apart into a pile of twitching bones. Grym hits skeleton, causing 8 points of damage.

The wizened old crone seems to have truly left the area, and is nowhere to be seen.

Zaghigoth, do I understand it right, your entanglement spell should last for two minutes?

Seeing the cannibals take cover, Yekskya shoulders his bow and draws his greatsword. He moves through the trees and past Zag to stand against the skeletons. I can't remember what type of terrain this is, so treat this as a double move if it is difficult terrain.

As the skeletons begin to fall and the cannibals retreat, Zaghigoth feels a wave of relief washes over him, but he steels himself swiftly, knowing that the undead are not yet vanquished. Zaghigoth makes a feint towards one of the skeletons, whirling away when the undead warrior turns to slash at him. The distraction gives Shiv the opportunity to grab the skeleton's thigh bone and worry at the bone, literally shaking the skeleton to pieces. 2 points of damage to the skeleton.

Grym tries to assist, but misses his opponent. Meanwhile, her gaze still fixed on the area where the consorts retreated, Aerys states that she's going to scout around the entanglement's area of effect, to make sure that more cannibals aren't circling back towards the group. She starts heading north to examine the huts there.

Round 11
Rowena can catch up with her move once he has a chance to post.

Yekskya starts moving towards the fight with the skeletons, stepping over tree roots and around bushes to get there. Yes, the jungle is considered difficult terrain, costing twice as much movement to cover squares.

The skeletons fight back. One tries to swipe at Grym, but misses. The other attacks Zaghigoth, and manages to hit him. Zag, are you still fighting defensively? I'm assuming it's possible to do that and aid another in attack at the same time.

Casting a quick look around to check how Yeks and Zag are doing, I am relieved to see my expactations confirmed with both holding their ground against the cannibals and skeletons. Deciding to make sure Aerys is covered while she checks the huts, I nock an arrow and move around the field of entanglement as well, keeping an eye out for dangers close to myself as well as the half-elven woman warrior.

I wasn't fighting defensively, no. How much damage did I take? Might determine my action for the round.

The Exchange

Sorry folks, been swamped at work the past week and swamped with a cold, which has had me zonked for getting time on the computer. Moreover, we're just getting ready to leave on some vacation time, so this might be my last post for a couple weeks, I think I'll be back posting around the 9th April. But I wanted to make sure I leave your characters with something to chew on in the meantime!

At this point, I think this battle has turned pretty much in your favor and that you have the victory, I just wasn't sure in which it would end. Since I am going away on vacation, would you permit me to wrap up the battle at this point, so that when I return we can move on? I think it's time to get you and your fellow strandees (?) off the island!

Also, with this epic battle you have earned plenty of experience, plenty to reach 3rd level and then some. Your totals now are each 7827XP. From third level on, I'll be using the normal rate of xp gain, had speeded it up as due to teh online nature we missed some of the low-level beasties lurking out there in the jungle. Feel free to level up your characters, read the post below and decide what you'd like to do next. I'm not sure at this point if Grym will be able to get back to the game, I think we'll carry on as we are for now and if you find your way back to civilization, we can see about recruiting to fill the ranks.

{ooc] Anyway, let's play! [/ooc]
The Aftermath
The fight is desperate, and bloody, but slowly the battle has turned in your favor. The gents in the party, Yekskya, Zaghigoth, and Grym, work together to chop down the skeletons. Despite their menacing nature, they seem to fall to your blades easily enough, collapsing into piles of sunbleached bones.

Rowena and Aerys, skirting the edge of Zaghigoth's entangling vegetation, reach some of the buildings of the camp, strong stilts supporting a watchtower, 10 feet off the ground. With small effort, you are able to scale the stockade, leaping over the logs into a battle-ready stance. You make your way warily through the hut at the bottom of the steps - sleeping quarters, and out the doorway into the middle of the camp. You see no one.

You make your way through the other structures, a storage hut, a hut that looks like their witch doctor's laboratory, more dwelling spaces. You follow through the doorway you saw the consorts take their chieftain, to see that the fallen leader has finally been abandoned, in what looks like a butcher's workshop. His body looks as it has been propped up reverently against a great bloody post, like an altar for flaying flesh. The fleeing consorts seem to have escaped through another doorway, down into a pen, and across a refuse pit into the jungle. They seem long gone. The camp is yours!

Regrouping, you secure the camp and finally take a moment for a breather. When it seems evident that the witch doctor and the crazed consorts aren't returning any time soon, you feel able to investigate the camp more closely. You find food and water, of a sort; in one hut you find a month's worth of jerky, though you suspect it may be human in origin. In the witch doctor's workshop, you find several items of value, amid many unimaginable horrible things and a truly awful smell. You find 3 antitoxins, 2 smoke sticks, 3 tanglefoot bags, a thunderstone, 6 potions of cure light wounds, and two potions of restoration.

Investigating the nearly finished lighthouse, you find a store room which has been done up very recently as a richly appointed bedroom, rich by the cannibals' standards anyway. It's odd, you find the remains of ship's rations, and you could swear they have come from the Jenivere . You also find a chamber which has been turned into a dark shrine, full of relics from a ship called the Thrune's Fang , including a wooden figurehead in the image of Asmodeus. Anyone wanting to make a Knowledge (history) check against DC 20 might learn a bit more about what is displayed here.

In another chamber, near the top of the tower, surely the chieftain's resting place, you find a rusted and dented footlocker, perhaps another relic of the sea. Inside you find treasure, 4,200sp and 180gp. Moving up, you see that the original colonists to this island must have abandoned this tower only shortly before it was finished. With a few days labor, you could have it in working order, and if you knew something about construction or stonework, you could get it done even faster. Anyone with Knowledge (engineering) or Craft (carpentry, stoneworking, or even traps), now would be a great time to roll.

I'm not sure how long posts are allowed to be, so I'll continue on another post

The Exchange

Having secured the camp and stuck around long enough to explore, get healing, and wait for attack, you realize you have the camp to yourself and that it might prove to be a good place to stay for the night, even if the dwelling spaces leave a lot to be desired.

The following day, you are able to take stock and plan what your next move is. The sun is not high in the sky when suddenly a terrible noise flattens you! Lightning bolts lance up into the sky from the water and a terrible thunder echoes over the Shiv. After a moment, the commotion stops, and you are able to regain your feet again.

For the rest of the day, you can talk of little else, trying to puzzle out what it could be. Until, later in the afternoon it happens again, and you are bowled over by the flashing light and terrible thundering, roaring sound.

So, over to you!

"Aye...this does not seem like a natural occurrence, I say. This island holds many secrets. No wonder the spirits of wind and wave guard it so. Might be you are right, Yekskya...perhaps it has something to do with why the woman changed course to here, I say. Whatever it is, it sends a chill through this one's bones..."

Welcome back, excited to get on to the next encounters and eventually to get off the island. I wonder if we'll get to meet my Savage Tide inquisitor in Eleder. He and Yekskya might bump into each at the market buying arrows.

The Exchange

The more time you spend in the camp, the more disconcerting discoveries you make.

The first discovery is the strange phenomena you encountered while in the camp, with the thundering sound and lightning rising up into the sky from all around. At first it appears that the bolts were coming from the sea and everywhere, but after some discussion and recollection you think the majority of the activity was coming from the area around the red mountain to the east, the highest part of Smuggler's Shiv that you have seen so far.

Another discovery you have made is when you realized that a pile of bamboo and driftwood near to the base of the lighthouse is actually a well-crafted lid covering a ten-foot diameter hole. The hole is deep, you reckon about 20 feet, and appears to drop down into a cavern. There are a few stakes in the ground round about the hole, you suppose one could tie a vine or a rope to a stake and climb down into the hole, though it doesn't look like it has been disturbed for some time.

Another is the powerful stench of human blood which seems to hang over the camp. You'll be glad to leave soon, though it has been useful for resting up after your epic fight.

You haven't seen the witch doctor or the women since you took over the camp. You keep a close watch, scanning the jungles with a wary eye, alert for any trouble. You hear only the sounds of the jungle.

Yekskya leans in over the hole when it is found, "I almost hate to think what might be down there. But, perhaps we will find something to help us get off the island. If someone can help provide light, I think we should explore it."

Zag nods solemnly. "If there was not anything important below, they would not have gone to the trouble of protecting it, I say. This island is bountiful in danger, it would seem, but it is as good a road as any. If you go, I will follow."

"All right, let's do it. I'll go down first and then one of the others will probably have to help you with Shiv. I'll drop a torch to help with my descent and then light a lantern once I get down there." Yekskya knots a rope and ties it to the stake, lowering it down into the hole. He drops a torch to judge whether he has allowed for enough rope and then adds more if needed. Finally, with lantern and his weapons slung, he climbs down the rope into the hole.

Caves of the Mother

Dropping a torch down the hole, you see that the bottom is only about twenty feet down, the hole being a gap in the ceiling of a cavern below. It looks like with the rope it is a fairly easy climb into the hole and about ten feet down, but once into the cave you can't see the cavern walls so you'll need to rely on the rope for climbing down and climbing up the rest of the way.

Yekskya bravely prepares himself, and climbs down the rope, finding it not too difficult to shinny down. When he gets to the bottom, he lights his lantern and has a look around.

The uneven floor of the ten foot high cave is stained with blood and scattered with pieces of wood, fallen leaves, broken weapons, and in places, bits of bone. A passageway to the east leads down into darkness. You don't hear any noise.

"Come on Aerys. Let's see what's down there." With a few quick moves I tie the rope around my waist and move down into the hole so fast it's almost like a drop. Once down on terra firma again I wait for Aerys to follow, helping her untie the rope once she's down on the ground as well. Sorry, just realized the last post I did seems to have disappeared. I must have shut everything down before I actually clicked on submit post. No matter, we'll give it another go.

With some work and ingenuity, you all manage to find a way down into the cavern: Yekskya first, Rowena, Zaghigoth with Shiv, Grym and Aerys. Once assembled and well armed with lights, you explore the passage leading out of the cave. The passage slopes rather steeply downwards at points, but soon you enter into another cavern.

The smell of decay is thick in the air of this wide but low-ceilinged cavern. To one side, the ceiling drops down to little more than three feet in height over a region strewn with bones and bits of old flesh, while to the other, the ceiling bulges upward in a dome shape - six circular, pod-like alcoves line the walls of the cave at this side.

Zaghigoth, Shiv, Rowena, and Grym, you also become alert to the fact that you are not alone. Across the chamber you see two savage, almost animalistic, beings keeping watch. With your arrival they immediately leap to their feet and hurtle towards you, their eyes dead, their look, hungry.

Zaghigoth & Shiv and Rowena, you all are able to act during the surprise round, along with Grym. Proper initiative count will kick in the following round.

Round 1 continued
Focusing on the attacking creatures, Yekskya stands his ground and fires two arrows at the undead thing that knocked down Cat. The first arrow misses, but the second arrow hits the creature in its distended jaw. It snaps its teeth in confusion as it attempts to dislodge the arrow. 11 points of damage to the first creature.

After seeing one of the creatures topple Cat, Zag lets out a growl and commands shiv to lash out at that one while the druid focuses on keeping the other monster busy.

The Exchange

Sorry Zag, got myself a bit muddled, forgot your action. We'll get it in now.

Round 1
Whirling with his spear, Zaghigoth growls and commands Shiv to attack the undead creature standing over Rowena. Shiv tears into the creature, ripping the thing apart until just scraps of flesh remain. 7 points of damage to the first creature, and it is down! Meanwhile, Zaghigoth tries to push the other creature back with his spear, not doing any damage but keeping it from climbing past to get at Yekskya and the others.

Back to Rowena!

From where I'm lying prone, I have a perfect view of Shiv in all his devastating wrath. As the croc rips the strange monster to pieces, I quickly roll away from the blood spattering all over, before jumping back up again. Glad that I managed to hold on to my rapier, I maneuver into position to catch the remaining monster between myself and Zag.
"Alright Zag, let's finish this thing."

Round 1 continued
From where she lies sprawled on the cavern floor, Rowena tries to strike out with her rapier and pierce the remaining creature. But, lying on the ground, it's difficult to properly reach and misses.

As Shiv continues to shred the one creature's body, the crocodile is sprayed with blood and pus from the undead creature. The stench is horrible, and even seems to turn the crocodile's stomach. Zaghigoth, please can you make a Fortitude save for Shiv, against DC 12.

Finally making a move, Aerys rushes forward and strikes out with a hardened fist, trying to chop at the creature. She hits it in the base of the head, causing it's head to tilt at an unnatural angle. The creature doesn't really seem to notice, and the chop seems to cause pustules and boils on the creature's skin to burst, spraying over Aerys. She falls away, retching. 4 points of damage to the creature, but the foul, diseased pus has sickened Aerys for the next 5 rounds.

Grym moves up as well, but with everyone tightly packed around the undead creature, the half-orc is unable to get in to land any blows himself. Instead, he scans down the next passageway, looking out for any more of the monstrosities. Grym moves forward 30 feet.

End of round 1!

Seeing what happens when the creatures get hit or die, Zag furrows his brow in concentration for a moment before turning back to glance at Yekskya. I'll try to drive it back, I say! Shoot true when it's away!"

Going to attempt a CMB to Bull Rush the creature away from us, taking the AoO. Don't know if I can, but if Shiv can aid another to give a +2 on a CMB check, I'll try (Also don't know if it would be an attack roll on his part, or a CMB check I'll go with CMB.

Round 2
The remaining creature recovers and turns towards Aerys, its head still tilted unnaturally from where Aerys punched it. It scrabbles at the half-elven woman, ripping into her with sharp claws and teeth. Jumping on her and sinking its teeth into her shoulder and abdomen, it seems to feed on her flesh, while she tries frantically to push it off. 7 points of damage to Aerys. She is rescued when Zaghigoth bowls into the creature, shoving it back 10 feet away from the group. The thing tries to claw the half-orc, but Zaghigoth keeps the creature's arms locked out of reach.

Shiv stops tearing into the other creature's corpse, and if it's possible for a crocodile to turn pale and wretch, Shiv does so. It turns balefully towards the continuing fight. Shiv is sickened for 2 rounds

Yekskya fires over Zaghigoth's shoulder, aiming at the undead monster. His first arrow hits, ripping right through its chest. The second arrow clatters off the back of the cavern. 6 points of damage to the creature.

I'll wait for Rowena's post since I suspect you'll do Aerys and Grym after that. With luck, it won't get back around to me.

"AERYS!" Jumping to my feet, I maneuver to a position behind the creature that just took a bite out of Aerys, catching it between me and Zhag. "You'll pay for that, you undead freak. I'm gonna make you dead for real."

Round 2 continued
Rowena slips around and moves behind the creature, trying to stab it with her rapier, filled with righteous anger at what it did to poor Aerys. Rowena stabs and stabs, but hardly manages to do anything more than get its attention, now firmly fixed on Rowena. Cat, I wasn't able to get you right behind the creature, but I was able to move you on the map into a melee position.

Aerys reaches out a hand to the side of the cavern, to keep herself steady. She understands Zaghigoth's tactics to push the creature away from the others, but Aerys isn't the type to stand idly by on the sidelines. She lurches forward to where the creature is, attempting another punch with her bloody fist. Sickened, her punch lacks any force, not even gaining its attention.

Grym continues to keep a watch on the tunnel leading away from the cavern.

Round 3!

Edit: The site seems to keep cutting off the last half of this post, so just a short summary: the creature tries to bite Rowena, but misses. Back over to you! [/ooc]

Round 3
With a feral squeal, the undead creature launches itself at Zaghigoth, trying to rip away the half-orc's flesh with its sharp teeth. Instead, Zaghigoth is protected by his armor, the creature gnawing on the tough hide. The alcoves at this end of the cavern seem particularly fetid and full of mounds of detritus, almost like a nest or cocoon.

You know, I keep doing the actions through the NPCs to the end of the round, but keep forgetting that it's back to me for the creatures at the top of the next round. Sorry about that, back to you, Zag.

Round 3 continued
While Shiv shudders and gags, Zaghigoth tries to stab the creature as it tries to maul him. He thrusts with his spear but is unable to wound it. Fortunately, Yekskya aims and plants two arrows in the creature's brain, killing it instantly! 46 points of damage to the creature! It's dead! again!

You all stop to catch your breath, while Rowena takes out her anger on the creature by stabbing it repeatedly with her rapier. A quick look around reveals that the cavern is full of filth and detritus. The smell is terrible, fetic and ghastly. But one of the alcove "nests" reveals an interesting artifact: a strip of leather armor with words on it that look like they were written in blood. You pick it up and read the terrible, desperate words inscribed on it:

Captain Kovack's Last Confession

Suddenly Grym grunts, "There's another one down the tunnel!" and goes bounding into the darkness down the tunnel. You hear the sounds of scuffling and fighting!
