Sounds like Helaku's player could be taking some time out just now, so I'll NPC him for the moment until we hear from him.

Round 3
Helaku engages his wand and sends another shimmering missile at the ghostly lion. It seems to recoil from the blast. 3 points damage.

Shaylar keeps up a steady stream of arrows, arcing over the heads of the rest of you to pierce the spectral cat. With each arrow its image seems to waver, until it bursts in a pulse of ghostlight. Each arrow hit, the third one is enough to take it down.

The Lion Path

Taking stock, you continue up the dark, winding passage. It seems to curl back on itself as it ascends. You are clambering along when you hear another blood-curdling growl, and the ethereal form of an even larger lion manifests before you. This one seems to take up the whole width of the corridor; indeed, its shoulders and mane disappear through the stony walls. This seems an altogether more dangerous specimen. It is crouching low and obviously seems to have been aware of your procession, though its growling gives it away. It pounces down the passage at you with a cry!

No map at the moment, but much as with your previous encounter, and I'm presuming the same marching order as before. No surprise round, so Shaylar and lion up first.

Ghost Dire Lion - Round 1
Counting on his experience with the smaller spectral lion that you found at the bottom of the tunnel, Shaylar suddenly erupts with a hail of arrows at the new foe. Several seem to hit, and deal a modicum of damage. Your two manyshot arrows deal a total of 6 points damage. Your rapid shot arrow is also threatening a critical, if you want to roll again to confirm.

The lion pounces forward and one oversized paw sweeps out to catch Ambrose. As with the other lion, the cavalier brings his sword up to block, but the lion's claws seem to pass right through Ambrose's arm and armor and reach right into his chest to rake his heart. The encounter leaves him with a shivering cold sensation. Ambrose 23 points damage. A successful Fortitude save against DC 15 reduces this to 11 points damage.

Great to have you back Helaku, you're up next!

Ambrose seems a bit unnerved by the encounter as well. He tries to keep it at bay with his sword, and his swiping attacks seem to be doing some good because the ghost lion seems somewhat...diminished. Two successful hits, against its incorporeal form you deal a total of 10 hit points damage.

That might be the thing to do, Leonar. We've pretty much ground to a halt as it is. Could just be a case of being the summer holidays. If we get Helaku and Shaylar back on board over the next few weeks we'll press on, there are some great encounters ahead. Otherwise we'll wrap up the game.

Ghost Dire Lion - Round 2 continued
Leonar calls down a flaming column of fire on the ghost lion. The tunnel is filled with searing heat and you feel your skin singeing from proximity to it. You think nothing could survive that, but just as the smoke clears the lion reappears, surging towards you. Passed its Reflex save and takes half damage again from its incorporeal state - 6 points damage. It really didn't like the fire though.

Aleste holds back from lobbing a bomb - no point adding to the inferno.

Ambrose steels himself and presses the attack. His frost blade sweeps up, cutting into the apparaition. You must be doing some good, because the spectral lion seems to have nearly faded from sight. It refuses to abandon its post however, and continues to fight to the end. An opportunity missed with the threat, yes. However, even with halfing the damage with its incorporealness it's on its last legs.

Ghost Dire Lion - round 3
Shaylar utters a plea to Sylvan Ehlonna as he sends a barrage of arrows at the ghostly lion. The archer's corded muscles bend effortlessly with arrow after arrow, and with a final roar the ghostly figure dissipates. Victory! You reach the top of the passage, and see that another stone shaped door opens outwards ...

The lion was just hanging on by a few hit points. I didn't intend to leave this sitting for so long, had wanted to see if Helaku would be returning and then have been playing catch-up with various things the past couple weeks. If you all are still keen to play I'm game to move forward. If so, we might look at recruiting one or two new players. If you all know anyone who would be looking for a game, you could pass on the word.

NG Male Human Emissary 9 | HP: 91/91 | AC: 25, FF: 25, T: 12 | F +10, R +4, W +6 | Init +0, Perc +9

Ambrose breathes a sigh of relief when the lion dissipates. "I don't like this place," he muses. "We must make sure this lich doesn't survive to send these abominations into the battles ahead. These specters would make short work of the soldiers and town guards."

Ambrose takes point up the stairs, ready to lead on when the others are.

Definitely still keen on playing. Don't know anyone myself, I'm afraid.

With a sigh of relief, I see the ghostly lion dissipate and I slowly lower my bow. Turning towards Ambrose, I point at the lion on his shield with a wry smile "Lions! If I never see another one it will be too soon. Well...maybe except for the Lions of Brindol. But you're right, if this lich we're looking for joins the war on the side of the Horde the war is almost lost before it actually starts. Those guards and soldiers won't stand a chance against these spirit abominations. We have to succeed, or the entire vale will be lost to the darkness of the Red Hand."

Nick, I understand you already asked my wife, but I'll ask her again ;-)

Ambrose seems hesitant about retreating. "I think it a loss of advantage to back off now, but if you are in need of rest and magical energy, I wouldn't want to have us throwing ourselves into more than we can handle."

The Exchange

You listen at the stone portal at the top of the stairs, but don't hear any sounds. However, you reckon you could probably retreat down as far as the behir's lair if you were in need of rest and healing. It's not very pleasant, but you could probably fortify the space against any patrols.

NG Male Human Emissary 9 | HP: 91/91 | AC: 25, FF: 25, T: 12 | F +10, R +4, W +6 | Init +0, Perc +9

Ambrose leads the way down to the Behir's lair, watchful for more ghosts in the corridors. He looks around for anything handy to block up the passageway leading further into the lion, and also suggests perhaps moving the corpse of the behir to block the entrance from the outdoors in case any returning patrols wander in, thinking the combined strength of the group as well Smoke could drag the dragon-thing.

Once settled, the knight takes first watch.

Male Lion Shaman 9 | AC (22) 16/12/14| HP 79/79 | F+11,R+7,W+11 | Init.+8| Perception+17 |

Leonar basically passes out, vexed at their struggles with the lion defenders.

Once the barricades have been erected, I sit down next to Leonar and Ambrose, a pensive look upon my face. Rummaging around in my backpack I finally retrieve some strips of dried meat as well as some dried fruit and nuts. Handing out some of it to my friends, I add: "Here, have some of this. Tastes a lot better than those trail rations." Scratching Fang behind the ears, I toss several bigger lumps of dried meat into the air, which the wolf catches with resounding snaps of his powerful jaws.

The Exchange

Having returned to the behir's lair, you are able to barricade the secret door. Shaylar provides some nourishing food, while Aleste settles into brewing tea from amongst his various alchemical ingredients. After the rigours of fighting the behir and the ghosts, Leonar falls into a deep slumber, as Ambrose oversees making the area secure. Helaku rests as well, spending time in meditation to recover his spell-power.

Fang and Smoke are certainly pleased to see you return, though there's no sign of the other horses. The storm is still raging and the wind is howling. Every so often if you watch closely you can see ghostly lions cavorting on the winds - are they keeping an eye on you? It's difficult to tell. Ambrose and Smoke see to dragging the behir's corpse across the bottom of the steps, to deter any patrols returning to the Ghostlord's lair.

Huddled over his tea, Aleste grumbles, "I know we're here to see the lich, but I'm really not keen on ghosts. Have we got a strategy for tomorrow?" Sorting through some of his gear, Helaku muses "I reckon those ghost lions might re-materialise, but not for a day or two. If so, I have a couple spells that might be effective against them, but they're a bit limited in the confines of that stairwell. More effective if we see any flesh and blood opponents."

Later in the night, the storm finally abates. In the stillness, you can hear scratching from the other side of the secret door as something or someone tests your defences, but the sounds fade after a few minutes, and morning arrives without further incident.

No night-time surprises means you get a night's rest and opportunity to heal and replenish spells. Back up the Lion's Path?

We found a phylactery in the swamp along with a letter that pretty much said that the Red Hand was blackmailing a lich, the Ghostlord, into joining their army since they have his soul box, so we are hear to stop him or sever that alliance.

The Exchange

Great summary, Ambrose! Leonar, yes any healing or buffs or actions you all want to do before returning to adventuring, go for it. You all get a night's rest, so you get 8 hit points back off the bat, and you can use your spells or wand for further healing. I'll go ahead and post the next part now so that you can move forward, but let me know of any actions you intend to take place beforehand.

Shaylar - Will Fang be moving forward with you, or keeping company with Smoke?

In the morning, things seem a bit calmer. The storm has dissipated, though the Thornwaste continues to labor under lowering clouds. You suit up and prepare your gear, expecting trouble ahead.

Taking down your barricade and opening the secret door, you make your way up the stone steps through the narrow corridor. Reaching the top, you check the end of the passage and find another stone door that opens outward. It too is crafted to be flush with the wall, well hidden. The door opens and you find a room empty of furnishings apart from a low stone bench against the western wall. Details are difficult to see as the entire chamber is filled with a thick, roiling mist. However here and there you spot carvings of undead lions on that wall loom over the bench, as if about to pounce on anyone foolish enough to sit there. A stone spiral staircase rises up near the northeast corner, and stone doors to the north and east provide additional exits.

Treat the room as covered by a fog cloud spell: all sight including darkvision is restricted to 5 feet. A creature within five feet has concealment (20% miss chance on attacks), creatures more than 5 feet away have total concealment (50% miss chance).

As we prepare to set out to further explore the building and find the Ghostlord, I turn towards Fang. Kneeling down in front of the big wolf I take his muzzle in my hands, eyes locking onto the big yellow eyes of my companion. "We've come a long way my friend. I would very much like for you to stay here with Smoke, but I can't make you. We're going up against something very dark and very powerful and there's a chance we will have to fight. A fight we may not walk away from. It would tear me apart if I lost you, but I cannot deny that your help may be much needed. You're smarter than any wolf I've ever met and I know that you may not be able to understand everything I say, but I know you do understand duty, honor and the difference between good and evil. We must face this evil and deal with it one way or another to prevent it from aiding the even greater evil of the Horde of the Red Hand. I'll leave it up to you to decide whether you stay here with Smoke or come along."

The wolf looks back at me, a glint of intelligence sparkling in its eyes as if it's considering my words. Then, with a growl it jumps up and stands on its hind legs, front paws landing on my shoulders with an audible slap. His muzzle pressed against my face, Fang seems to ask me how I would even consider leaving him behind.

A smile flashes momentarily over my troubled face and I hug the big wolf: "Thank you, my friend. I was hoping you would come along. Now, let's go find this lich and convince him to stay out of our fight with the Horde."

Looks like Fang is coming along, CH ;-)

"You've been tracking the goblins of this area? Fortunate we have crossed paths...though I will admit, your timing is..peculiar. Still, any enemy of the Red Hand I can count among my friends. My name is Ambrose Harrowfield, I am a Lion of Brindol. These are my associates - we have been battling this horde for weeks. We are here in this giant cat to stop a lich."

"Lich? Is that some kinda hob boss? Skinny lady throwin' lighning bolts and what? Cuz that's who killed my lads, her and her scum hob punchin' bastids. This Red Hand, that their tribe?"

"Erm, no. The lich is an undead abomination...one with great magical power, I'm told. It is in league with the goblins. The Red Hand, I believe is a mustering of many tribes under one banner."

"Ah, I see. Well, if'n you'll have me, I'll swing my axe wit ya. Anythin' ta get closer ta dem hobs, and if there's a undead critter 'tween me an' dem, so be it. Whadya say, ya wan' a right proper fightin' dwarf ta team up wit?"

"Well, we have reason to think this undead might be rather reasonable. We have its phylactery, which apparently is a source of its power. If we can convince it to stay out of the battle, that will weaken all the goblin groups."

"Even better! We don't gotta chop the beastie down if'n it'll talk. An' if you all have a doohickey the beastie'll want, sounds like a good plan. I'm yours, if ye'll have me."

"I for one will not toss away any blade ready to slay these foes. If you would fight with us, Harek Ironshirt, I would have you."

The heavy clanking of armor coming up the stairs seems to give credence to Ambrose's words, but just as I draw the string on my bow back with an arrow training on the entrance of the stairwell, a lone dwarf comes into view.

A few tense moments pass, fortunately without bloodshed and then the dwarf introduces himself. As Ambrose and Leonar welcome the warrior, I lower my bow and put the arrow back in my quiver. Joining the others, I extend a hand to dwarf and I introduce myself.

"Even though my people are rarely considered to be the best of friends with dwarves and other races, I have long ago done away with any prejudices Elves are known for. Living among other races has taught me that the wrapping of the package is not important, but what's inside is. And if you're hunting hobgoblins, we share a common enemy. So, welcome master Harek. Name's Shaylar, or Shay for short. I hunt gnolls and hobs. This here is Fang, my companion. He hunts with me."

"Good taste meet ya, all. You too, Fang, good boy."

Harek looks about to ruffle the wolf's ruff, then decides better about it.

"So, I ken take point, if ya don't have a scout or sneak wit ya. My eyes are plenty good, but u ain't real quiet, if ya noticed."

Male Human Alchemist 9 (HP 58/58; AC18; Initiative +3; Perception +13)

I grin at the dwarf's direct manner.
"Oh, I can sneak around when I want to and Shaylar has a real talent for it but it's always good to have options. We're considering parlay, which won't call for much sneaking at all."

If we had a cleric and a pile of the right gear then I would be keen on taking down the lich. Right now, I'm not so sure.

Seeing the dwarf's hand move towards Fang and then retreat, a smile creeps onto my face. "It's okay Harek, Fang won't bite friends."
As I say it, my hand drops onto Fang's neck, ruffling his coarse hair.
