Garidan the Glacier |
I'm assuming we're all expected to take the same exit out?
"Cato, would you mind bringing up the rear, I would feel safer with you at our backs. Tanrov, if you would be so kind as to follow Martino, I believe with the two of you leading the way, few will stand in our way. Mimazaran, if you could help guide me, I don't see as well as you in the sewers, I would be grateful. Rurik, I think we should save our light spells until we know we have out distanced any pursuit, what do you think?"
Rurik Voralius |
"Agreed, but if you know how to make fake torchlight or dancing lantern flame and send it in another direction, that might be useful."
Cato Archimboli |
Cato nods in assent to Garidan. "But take care to watch my pace." Cato juts a thumb towards his own chest. "Old man. Don't move as fast as before." Despite his proclamation, Cato appears to be in excellent shape for his age. The armor bearing its weight down on him, however, would likely be enough of a burden as to slow his movement.
"If I need to stay back to buy time, can do that," he says, a frown carving its way back into his features. "But that's last resort. Would be a pity to be lost in sewers because I was moving too slow."
Mimazaran |
Many of Mimazaran's concerns had been asked and answered before he could get the words out, and figured that it would be better for the humans to talk; not many cared to listen to his voice for any longer than they had to. Something was nagging at the back of his mind, and he was about to ask, but then came the commotion from the door, and in came the child. It seemed like the Dottari were already onto the ones pulling the strings of the operation, and had caught one of them. It seemed suspicious, though, considering how Penumbra had just started telling them how the Dottari would be knocking on the door in minutes, not seconds, but he let it be.
Being the slowest member of the group, Mimazaran wasn't quite the first to make it to the exit. Apparently there was a plan going on for the order they went, and it seemed like one of the humans wanted him to be the guide. It was true that he could see rather well in the dark compared to a human, but he wasn't very fast or perceptive enough to be a sufficient guide. Then came the talk of lights, and he knew that he had just the spell for it. "If you needed lights, all you needed to do was ask," he said as he started to head down the exit. "One cannot cast shadows without first having light, after all, and I can cast some dancing lights if we need them."
DM Dickie |
The sewer tunnel is about ten feet wide, and well fairly well maintained. A trench runs straight down the middle, carrying sewage and runoff from the west to the east.
Penumbra yanks a heavy rope, slamming the trapdoor shut. She then strikes a sunrod and holds it near the wall. "These sword-shaped marks lead the way to one of our best safehouses. You see how it is pointing to the left? That indicates the direction to travel should you run into an intersection. They can be difficult to spot, so be wary. Morosino and I will take an alternate route. I believe I can get him to safety quickly, and splitting up may help throw off pursuit."
She hands the sunrod to Morosino and bends over to remove a loose stone. Behind it is a small wooden case, which she then opens to reveal a cache of bottles. "Thank goodness. I was afraid a goblin would trip over these. These are magic potions which will heal minor injuries, but let's hope you won't need them." She hands two of the potions to Morosino to hold and the two disappear into the sewers.
You can hear crashing above you and the sound of heavy metal armor clanking against the wooden floors. Muffled shouts and the sound of furniture being overturned soon follows.
There are a total of six potions of cure light wounds remaining in the box.
Rurik Voralius |
Rurik quickly scoops up the vials, replaces the rock, and does his best to leave it looking unturned. He hands a vial to each person as they come through.
"I can't see much of anything down here," he says, "so either we need a light or I'll need to hold on to someone's belt."
Tanrov Shadow-Graxt |
"I think I should lead here I can see in the dark"
Tanrov moves to take the lead and follow the sword marks
Tanrov Shadow-Graxt |
"I'll give warnings or make noise if something is stupid enough to attack me"
Mimazaran |
Hearing all that commotion coming from the topside, Mimazaran knew that they didn't have much time. "I can buy us some time," he tried to assure the rest of the party with him. "I can send some light down the wrong direction in an intersection, so that should lead those Dottari down the wrong path." He waited to see how the rest of the party felt about it as he looked at the symbols on the walls to keep on the right track.
Cato Archimboli |
The Chelaxian makes an agreeable grunt to the Wayang as Cato drops the potion Rurik gives him into his pack. "If anyone can make some form of magical sound, may help to throw 'em off, too."
"Meantime, oughta keep moving." Cato follows behind the group, unshouldering his greatsword with a practiced smoothness.
Rurik Voralius |
"All right, let's go." Rurik reaches under his cloak and produces a holy symbol in the shape of a winged, angelic figure; with a simple word he causes it to glow. "Mim . . . uh . . . sorry, I can't remember how to pronounce your full name . . . now would be a good time to get those dancing lights headed off in another direction."
Martino Barzelli |
Martino made his way to the front of the group. "Magic lights can be useful, but they're not our only option," he explained, as he knelt to untie a bullseye lantern secured to his backpack. He continued: "On the other hand, a mage's spark could light this much faster than flint and steel."
As Rurik's holy symbol began to glow, Martino grinned sheepishly and said "Maybe we can stop to light it after a few intersections. Let's go."
Martino Barzelli |
Since Penumbra pointed out the first set of sword markers, I assume this is to find the second set.
Perception at +6: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25
In his stiff armored coat, Martino travels at 20 feet per round.
Garidan the Glacier |
Several of our party are at speed 20 due to size or armor.
Mimazaran, stay near Cato and use whatever trickery you can to slow our pursuers. Martino and Tanrov have taken the lead. That leaves Rurik and myself in the middle. Onward then, and make sure not to lose sight of those behind you."
DM Dickie |
After about eighty feet you run into a four-way intersection. A sword points to your left. On the wall opposite the symbol is some sort of graffiti written in an odd language and showing a crudely drawn skull with large teeth. An "X" crosses through the skull and an arrow points opposite the direction of the mark you were seeking.
DM Dickie |
The tunnels have narrowed to five feet wide. A T-intersection is up ahead. Movement catches your attention.
A pair of baleful red eyes glow in darkness ahead. An animated human skeleton!
Please roll for first round initiative! After first round has passed, it becomes a you vs. them simple initiative.
Skeleton Init: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21
Tanrov Shadow-Graxt |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
DM can you please roll initiatives in future... that will take a huge step out of delaying combat please
Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
Tanrov is hopefully ranging forward his 30ft movement and Darkvision serving well as a scout
initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17
Rurik Voralius |
Marching order is good with me although I'd like to swap places with Rurik. Garidan said he would stay near the rear and help Cato.
I'm fine with this. Best spot for me is anywhere that I can Channel to heal the whole team.
Cato Archimboli |
Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
Ahh, working now. Good thing I'm near the back with rolls like that!
Martino Barzelli |
Initiative: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
Busy scanning the walls for sword marks, Martino is slow to notice the skeleton.
Tanrov Shadow-Graxt |
Tanrov uses studied target on and then swings his Earthbreaker at the skeleton before him
Eb+st: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 132d6 + 7 ⇒ (4, 6) + 7 = 17
Martino Barzelli |
Martino draws his bow, nocks an arrow, and shoots at the skeleton.
Shortbow within 30 feet: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20
Damage within 30 feet: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
After he hits the skeletons a couple of times, can Martino use a Perception check to notice that his arrows aren't having much effect?
Cato Archimboli |
Cato shuffles forward with the group, but continues to hold up the back of the party in order to meet with any attacks from the rear.
I don't think Cato'll be able to get far up enough to do any damage in the 5-ft. wide area, so I'll have him sit in the back. Just in case any dottari show up.
DM Dickie |
Martino's arrow flies just over Tanrov's shoulder and strikes the skeleton in the mandible, shattering some teeth. However, the thing is still quite active.
You can tell it didn't do as much as you're sure it should have without the Perception check. Cato, however, may make one. See the spoiler below for the DC, and if successful, details.
Rurik Voralius |
As suggested by Garidan, Rurik moves up as close as he can and he presents his symbol forcefully. "Even in this darkness the Dawnflower's light can shine, and no evil can stand against it!"
Channel Energy to damage undead: 1d6 ⇒ 3
DM Dickie |
Skele Will Save: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
Skele Will Save: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14
Skele Will Save: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16
Skele Will Save: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21
Skele Will Save: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
A flash of dazzling sunlight and warmth briefly illuminates the tunnel. All of the skeletons show signs of losing cohesion, and the one in the lead falls apart entirely.
Just to confirm, the save DC for your channel is currently 12?
Martino Barzelli |
Seeing that his arrow had little effect on the skeleton, Martino shifted his focus toward the rear of the group. He scanned the gloom for any signs of their pursuers.
This would be a terrible time for those Dottari to catch up, he mused, but kept the grim notion to himself. This was also a terrible time to tempt fate, after all.
Cato Archimboli |
Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
I am a pro dice roller.
Cato continues to hold up the back of the party, but has yet to see anything that might cause trouble.
Rurik Voralius |
** spoiler omitted **

11 I think -- "The DC of this save is equal to 10 + 1/2 the cleric's level + the cleric's Charisma modifier." So 10 + 1 (Cha); the amount gained from level doesn't specify minimum of +1, so I guess it's +0 for a first-level cleric.
Mimazaran |
Mimazaran had no idea why there would be skeletons under the sewers, but there they were. He pressed his small frame to the wall, then turned to Cato. "If that hammer is any indication," he hissed to him in a low whisper, "you're probably better at smashing animated bones than I am. You get up there and bash them, and I'll run interference behind us."
Attempted Perception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 1 = 14
If he had to look for anything, Mimazaran didn't know. Still, he knew that there would be more coming behind him, and he didn't like the thought of it. Trying to think quickly, he attempted to interpret what the odd symbol with the skull might have meant. Unable to read the language written under it, he had to hazard the guess that it meant something dangerous was down that path, or perhaps it was the thing that animated the skeletons. He knew he didn't have much time to think about it, though, so he cast Dancing Lights, then sent the light behind them, heading in the direction of the first intersection, attempting to fool the Dottari by making the lights go in the direction that Penumbra hadn't taken.
DM Dickie |
DC 18 for that Perception check, and even had you made it, I never said who or what it was back there :P Moving on for the moment so as not to hold things up. Remember that when a spoiler tag is either addressed to a specific character or has a DC associated with it not to read it unless you meet the condition.
