Starting at the bizarre disapearance of the lady. Rickard looks at his drink thinking it drugged. With a shake of his head, he takes the map and heads for the ship.

Once on board he hands it to the guy that looks the most like a navigator to him.

"Off we go?" he asks unsuredly.

Fingers looks up, startled, from shoveling more gravy into his mouth with a trencher of hard bread when the tall, thin fletchling appears.

Her strange eyes frighten him a bit, causing him to avert his gaze and not look directly at her.

"Sarosha, eh? Soun's exotic. Some call me "Fingers" but Mitchell will work if'n that's more suitable, lady." He gulps down his flagon of wine, wiping the back of his hand across his mouth after.

"Key? Oh, this? Just foun' it lyin' 'bout. No real mystery there. T'mystery is what are we all doin' here, an' where is the loot I was promised. You know any details?"

From a little skiff that belongs to a ship out in the bay a strangely elegant woman that doesn't quite seem to fit the scenery steps onto the jetty of the island. "Thank you, Mate Cromson." she says to a bulky man in the skiff, who just takes the woman's backpack out of the boat. "And give the captain my regards again. Good winds... or whatever you sailors say." The man responds with a nondescript grunt and then directs his two crew members to put out.

Reference Image
She shoulders the backpack a bit inconveniently, and though she seems to have paid great attention to keep her body in shape and is by no means weak, she doesn't seem to be used to carry equipment around with her. Her fine, long white dress seems to be out of place and she gathers it a little to avoid catching on the undergrowth. Her raven black hair, her expressive, yet currently cool features and her relatively pale skin mark her Chelish descent. Some other small pockets and the uncut amethyst she wears raise the impression of a wizard.

She examines the little group curiously. "Good day, ladies and gentlemen." She greets. "Your being here wouldn't have anything to do with a little silver key, would it?" she asks while she looks around the group and readjusts her backpack. She looks at the key Fingers is showing around. "A key like this, actually. I am Devana. And I think I may have come for the same reason." Her tone is well pronounced, accurate, yet neither friendly nor unfriendly.

Sarosha suppresses the urge to get out of the seat she doesn't deserve and run to the kitchen to serve the elegant human woman. But to do so would give away her upbringing more surely than stepping on the table and shouting it for all to hear.

Making her best attempt to appear aristocratic, she greets the newcomer neutrally.

And good day to you as well. I am Sarosha, and our famished companion here names himself "Fingers", or "Mitchell" if you please. I believe we are all here because of these little silver keys.

If I ask about their background, I can keep the focus off mine.

Addressing the elegant woman, she asks politely,

Welcome. I trust your travels were pleasant?

Rickard:

on board the ship you notice that the man that was talking to the lady back at the tavern is there talking to the first officer.

you pick up a piece of the information. he is apparently attempting to barter for passage to Port Peril.

eventually the man is escorted off the ship.

The first officer then approaches you as you are coming aboard. (the man being escorted off glances toward you some sort of scheme running through hos head.)

you hand him the map and when he opens it the instructions are clear.

The uncomfortable voyage behind him, Abedezar is happy to indulge in whatever kind of hospitality the pirate has left for him. He enters the manor to find a high-born lady, a cutpurse, and well... honestly he has no idea what the little grey-skinned pauper is. "Well, well. Who are you fine folks?" the gambler says, in the common tongue, with a thick Varisian accent. "You can call me Abedezar Mavashti, Harrower and gambler by trade." he finishes as he saunters over to the table and sits, indulging in the same bread and gravy as the cutpurse.

Theod:

synopsis -- In your wanderings you meet up with a half-elf named Adrian Lores. he introduces himself as Captain Lores.

he offers to buy the silver key from you but you refuse. so instead he tells you that he knows what it will unlock.

he gives you a map and some coin to pay for your journey.

the map directs you to a small island not far from Widowmaker Island in the Shackles. It is name NeMoren's Isle.

you have learned that the Key is a part of a set of key to open a vault that was created by the Pirate Lord Paytro NeMoren.

he died about 3 years ago with no known heir. and as a key holder you are one of the heiers to his estate.

the map directs you to the island and you set off to find out more.

we pick up with you having reached the island and making your way to the manor on a small hill just outside the small fishing village of Weston

the village is all but abandon. most buildings are boarded up. you are told that the island is under a curse.

an old woman from the village believe youa re a savior to lift the curse. she says that you need to find the bride and lift the curse. all the others have ignored her, she hopes that you will listen.

After mulling it over for a bit. Theod decides to let the old woman speak "Say what you will, and I will hear you" he utters quietly.

current combat map group 1

Theod:

The old woman tells you that the curse started with the disappearance of Peytro Nemoren's bride Amiellia. then later more and more villagers started to disappear.

thre was that strange woman that went to the manor house alos but she never returned as far as anyone has seen.

most of the villagers have left to avoid the curse. many ships don't come here anymore.

there used to be numerous Osirion merchant ships here in years past but not anymore.

If you find Amiellia you will end the curse, or so it is believed.

eventuially everyone makes thier way to the manor.

There is no map for the manor house just go with a haouse similar to a govoner's mansion in the Caribbean.

the house is very empty, it appears as if much of the funishings have been removed.

each person is shown to a private bed chamber where they are to sleep. all meals are provided and they are free to roam the grounds.

the door to cellar is locked and none of the servants have a key. they inform you that the only one to open that door is the executor of Captain NeMoren's will.

there are very few servents, not enough to keep an estate of this size fully functioning. but enough to keep the guests comfortable.

allow any additional role playing as you explore the grounds. and share any information you have up to this point.

the day after everyone arrives Adrian Lores (AKA Captain Lore) arrives. he is prepared to answer any questions you may have.

It almost feels unreal to Devana... being guest on a strange tropical island within the realm of Cheliax sworn enemies, the pirate lords, in a mansion together with strangers she's supposedly somehow connected with. Yet it feels good to be relieved off her equipment for now, taste the exotic fruit and tea.

Eventually she wanders to the cellar door that the house staff showed her. She does not touch it to avoid the impression she wishes to steal from the others, but she is curious. With a few words she illuminates the streams of the arcane (detect magic) and takes her time studying the door from a step distance; probably it's just a door, but possibly there is more to it.

After that, a little insecure in the environment that is so very unlike Egorian, she wanders through the gardens, having a look at all the strange flowers, listens to the sounds of the island and the waves of the sea and feels the wind in her hair. Eventually she dares to walk back inside and finds Abedazar there.

"Hello", she says as she joins Abedezar in a large open room on the lower level, decorated with plants and walls supported by bamboo, offering both a refreshing breeze and shadow in the tropical climate, "mind if I join you? I am curious about harrowing and would very much like to see how it works. So... could you lay some cards for me and explain what they mean, please? How does that work, do I have to ask a particular question?" She picks up a strange fruit from the table and examines it. When Adrian Lores arrives Fingers approaches: "What gives, cap'n? Where is this door I thought we wuz openin'? I thought this was a treasure hunt, not a hol'day."

Adrian laughs at Finger's demands. Patience, The master of Gales will be herre soon and with him is the last will and testament of Captain Paytro NeMoren.

He guides him to the gardens. enjoy the tropical air, relax. nobody is going to take your inheritance away, at least not today. he says with a joking look in is eye.

Satisfied for now, Fingers turns away, and takes a walk along the beach. He's never been any place besides Korvosa, and there's no place like this in that hell-hole.

He enjoys the surf and sun, returning to the house later in the evening as the sun starts it's descent.

Abedezar pauses from his mundane game played with normal cards and opens his belt pouch, fishing out an old, ornate wooden box. "Ya need ta ask a question, or 'bout a certain situation or event or whateva," the tiefling says, flashing a toothy grin. "I think we all know whadja wanna hear about, though."

With that he opens the box revealing a particularly well made set of harrow cards, its intricately lacquered colors and gilt covering bone-white wood. Abedezar shuffles the thin tiles deftly and quite carefully, he obviously does not want to damage the heirloom deck. After shuffling he deals nine cards face down in rows of three. "Now don't be touching da cards," he says, "it's impolite."

"Da first three cards represent da past," the fortune-teller says as he turns over the upper left card, revealing a dwarf in hues of brass and bronze. "Da Brass Dwarf... you felt, invulnerable, or above others in da time immediately before all dis," he flips the next card, revealing a salamander and a water weird bound together. "Da Marriage says dat's because of whateva group you were with," Abedezar says as he flips the last card, which portrays a scene of people in motley and metallic masks. "Da Carnival says that was all a lie, just an illusion."

"Now, as to da present," he continues, flipping all three cards to reveal a humanoid tiger wearing fine clothes and jewelry; a man sitting upon a wagon drawn by oxen, whip in hand; and a creature with the body of a lion whose head is replaced by the torso, arms and head of a woman. "Da Rakshasa, da Teamster, da Lamia. Dey all say dat something outside of you is guiding your actions. Slavery, external control, doomed love, some tryst send you dis way did it?" Abedezar asks, a subtle tone of mockery in his voice that quickly passes.

"But what does the future hold? Dat's what dey always wanna know." The tiefling says, half to himself, as he flips the lower left card, revealing a pearlescent horse with a spiral horn on it's head. "Da Unicorn, a gift freely given, maybe dat silver key, or whateva it unlocks? But is it a gift at all?" he says as he flips the next card, revealing a man crawling through an alley filled with corpses. "Da Sickness makes me wary, is the gift cursed, or merely the path to it? Perhaps the final card can say, neh?" Abedezar let's out a bit of a laugh as the final card is revealed. Two golden eyes peer out from a white, avian face as it flies over a snow covered plain on a moonlit night. "Ah, da Owl, it gives us no answer. Is the wisdom foretold the gift? Or is the gift merely a curse and your survival of it, the path to wisdom? Only way to find out is by doing, in this case."

Devana looks expressionlessly at Sarosha, opens her mouth as if to reply but then turns her attention to Abedesar instead.

She listens as he lays the cards and watches the images on them. When he's done she whips her hair back and massages the back of her neck. "I am having a bit of trouble finding myself in those cards. Of the first three cards... the Carnival makes a certain degree of sense." She leans a bit forward to have a closer look at the card and holds her hair back so it won't touch it. "My 'friends' and I played some kind of carnival back at the academy, if you will." She sighed. "There is one amongst them, whom I still consider a friend. I hope she's alright... From that point of view the Marriage makes a certain degree of sense. A little circle of wizardesses who played their vain little games to avoid seeing the truth in the mirror. But the Brass Dwarf... are you sure this card refers to me? And not, say, a hell knight or the authorities in Cheliax?"

Knowledge (Planes): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (18) + 8 = 26 [How much does Devana know about Rakshasa]
She looks over the remaining cards. "While the situation may unclear, getting off this island may prove difficult and none of this was my idea... it was my choice to come here and I am glad I made it. Egorian is a prison. I am a Chelaxian and my past will always be part of me but..." She looks at the looks at the Teamster and the Lamia and shrugs.

Then she turn to the final three cards. "If the final three cards refer to the ones before... and represent the future... it can't really be the key, because I already have it. The Sickness; does the previous lead to a sickness? Maybe it's a warning of Captain NeMoren's heritage, but at the same time it's the path to wisdom?"

She leans back and ponders for a moment. "I don't really think there is any magical power in this, yet it's not a waste of time. Makes one reconsider one's own situation from a different perspective." She looks over to Sarosha: "Would you like to try?"

OK all, been real busy, sorry for the delay, moving the story now

It was several days since the first of you arrived till now when the last arrived.

The morning of the reading of the will was finally here.

You are each escorted by Adrian to a drawing room. this room was locked the entire time you were here and seems to be the only room still lavishly furnished.

Once all are comfortable Adrian opens another door and an elderly man in robes enters the room, he is an aged man with a lean, bronzed frame and leathery skin — the product of a lifetime of hard work under the open sky. The years have not worn away the grizzled captain, but condensed and distilled him, making him tougher, more tenacious, with an unyielding manner and bearing. A wild mane of dark gray hair and a long, flowing beard swirl around his head and shoulders like an imminent storm cloud, and his sweeping, iron-blue gaze feels like stiff icy wind blowing off a roiling ocean.

Knowledge local DC 15:

The old man speaks:
"In my hands, I hold the last will and testament of an old shipmate, Captain Paytro NeMoren, and former lord of this Isle, Lord of this manor house. The good Captain died three years ago, and he left in my care two documents."

"The first was a letter addressed to myself, outlining Capt Nemoren's final request that I locate 6 people, identified only by the silver key they will carry, and to gather them here for a reading of his will; the second document, unopened until today, is the will itself."

"I tell you, it has not been an easy task locating you all, it took us three years, but now we are here finally, together. Now on to the matter at hand."

Sarosha shifts nervously. In the pleasant few days at the manor she had almost forgotten the reason they were all here. Now, with the tension building, her shadow (and nobody else's) flits beneath her as if created by a flickering torch rather than the calm steady glow of the lamps.

She hopes nobody notices the subtle effect.

Devana has put her own writing paraphernalia on a small wooden board on her lap and halts, her quill dipped in ink over the ink bottle, ready to make notes on Captain NeMoren's last will. Unlike most writers she seems to remain very conscious of her appearance and her posture with fold legs in the chair might very well be studied in. It is hard to believe that Devana would ever accidently drop but a single drop of ink on her fingers or her dress.

Rickard whistled under his breath at the decor of the room, wealthy and civilized, two things he was not.

Leaning against the wall he watched his compatriots gather and address the old man. He twirled the key at his neck on a simple piece of leather.

He studdied for a moment the beautiful Devana as she began to prepare to take notes, a thoughtful one her. Rickard never wrote anything down, probably why he forgot things sometimes.

Theod stands awkwardly in a corner of the room. A silent shock has come over him (not being accustomed to the frivolity of the wealthy). Waiting for someone to speak first he starers silently over the room interested.

OK the will is read and here is what is presented to you

The last Will and testament of Captain Paytro NeMoren, Baron of NeMoren’s Isle, heir to the NeMoren Manor, and sole survivor of the NeMoren bloodline.

Gathered to hear my final words should be six fortunate people, each possessing a single silver key. How you received this key and how long you have had it are unimportant; perhaps a relative gave it to you or it was received in payment for a service rendered, perhaps a token from a loved one… However you came to possess the key, I hope that it was given in the spirit that I initially intended: as a reward, as a compensation, as a way to lessen my own guilt.

Though noble of birth and heritage, in my youth I was a vain and pompous man, and did not live up to the ideals of my station. I have kept a dark secret during my lifetime, and it is a secret I will take to my grave. My shame was not always easy to hide, and often, I took drastic, necessary steps to protect my image and my name. To each of those that have suffered so I can live with false dignity, I gave a token: A single silver key. These keys have passed through generations, across borders, and between many hands, I am sure, but at last they have gathered together to fulfil their true purpose.

Hundreds of years ago, 6 brothers, my ancestors, ruled this Island. Looking to provide a neutral port for both merchant and pirate alike. A place where deals could be struck and goods change hands when secrecy was of the utmost importance. A manor house was constructed, and under the manor house was carved a mighty vault protecting the vast horde of the NeMoren family. Six keys were created, all of which are needed to open the vault and reveal the riches within. The silver keys were passed down from generation to generation, until at last they were given to me.

I had hoped to pass the keys on to my heirs, but alas, it was not meant to be. Shortly after my marriage, a curse fell upon my wife, my name, and the people of this Isle. I was to blame for this horrible curse, and I knew I was unworthy of the treasure of my ancestors. So sealing the entrance to the vault, and giving away the keys to those I had wronged, I hid away the horde for as long as I lived.

Now, after my death, fate has brought the silver keys home, and with them, six deserving souls to reclaim the lost treasure. In the wine cellar, along the north wall, you will find a ten foot section of wall that does not match the surrounding walls. Take hammer to the wall, and behind it you will find the doorway to the family vault.

But be forewarned: the vault will not easily yield up its riches. Generation of my family have installed deterrents, and who knows what may have happened to the structure in the decades since it was sealed. Deep in the vault you will find a room with six evenly spaced keyholes. Insert your keys into the locks to activate the final mechanism, and the vast horde of the NeMoren family will be yours.

Perhaps then, I will have made amends for the wrongs I have committed, and my soul can rest more peacefully than did my living spirit.

Signed, Captain Paytro NeMoren, Pirate Lord.

Fingers listens to the reading, fidgeting the whole while. He does not understand some parts, but gets the fact that all the keys that will open the vault, which must have enormous wealth inside, are all right in this very room.

"A'right then, you heard t'man! Let's get on down to the cellar and see what's what with this ol' vault, eh?"

Devana hastily scribbles a few notes as NeMoren's last will is read. After the will is read she looks up. "That's a bit strange, I must admit. How old was Captain Nemoren, if those keys were passed along centuries ago. And wherein exactly lay this curse? From the context I would have guessed that he was meant to remind childless... that his wife was also affected would make a certain degree of sense then, but why this island? I also wonder for how long this vault hasn't been used anymore... A hidden treasure is worthless as long as it's hidden. For a valuable to be valuable requires an entity that recognizes its value. A vault needs to be used regularly to be meaningful."

She waits a moment until the ink on the parchment has dried and then rolls it up and puts it away.
