Tauni put a calming hand on Horgus's arm and said "The fewer people are seen coming and going from the library, the better. Besides, we are trying to get you to your home with as few detours as necessary. Let's move on, shall we?"

Male Human Aristocrat 4

"Hmmph. I guess it's all right for people to be seen coming and going from my home. They can stay in one of the servant's rooms. But I'm not changing diapers!"

Wren led the group to a shop where several younger siblings were hiding. She had to coax them out and then gave them stern instructions to stay close to her and keep quiet. She picked up the toddler and the group set out for Gwerm Manor.

The city was quiet, but now and then a scream could be heard in the distance or the growl of an animal. Vultures circled here and there. As the group arrived in the neighborhood, Horgus gave a sigh of relief when he saw his house still stood, with no evident damage. Horgus threw caution to the wind and raced toward the door of the manor which stood slightly open.

Before anyone could warn him to wait, a woman started screaming, "NO! Stay away! No!".

Men's voices came from the same direction: "In the name of Iomedae, it is your duty!" and "Do not resist. It will be over quickly!"

"Stop! I doubt you left your door open," the paladin called out, hoping the man would slow his sprint. Normally, Ellena would have been hot after his heels. Now, the safety of the children was paramount. She stayed by their side, and hoped the man would be okay.

Sorry for the delay. I posted the initiative order in a hurry and did not notice that it is NPCs at the front.

Anevia was the first to react to the commotion nearby. She readied her bow as she hobbled forward, still suffering from her broken leg, which has healed some but not enough to move as quickly as she used to.

Male and female voices from behind some houses just to the south were overlapping, making it hard to understand. They appeared to be confronting someone. "Hold her!" one shouted. "It is for the greater good," another urged. A woman's voice said, "Your sacrifice aids the cause of good."

PCs: once your character reaches a point on the map where he/she can see down the street, open the following spoiler to reveal what you see.

Crusaders and Woman on Street:
In front of a ruined shrine to Sarenrae knelt a weeping woman. Surrounding the woman were four human knights in battered armor. Their faces were sooty with grim and their eyes burned with feverish light.

One of the knights #6 held up a sword and appeared to be praying. Two other knights were trying to keep the woman grappled and unable to rise. A female knight looked down on the terrified woman and appeared to be trying to calm her, her hands held out beseechingly. All the them appeared to be members of the crusade, with symbols of Iomedae or Saranrae on their armor or clothing. Two more knights were running toward the group around the woman, not yet aware of anyone else in the area.

Ellena, detect evil:
If Ellena attempts to detect evil, she does not see any auras suggesting any of the crusaders is evil.

Franti walked down the street, at first following Horgus, but straying south towards the commotion. Before moving too far ahead, he held up six fingers and pointed them down the street, alerting his allies.

Franti wasn't sure what to make of the knights. He recognized their holy symbols, but Chaleb was wearing a symbol of Iomodae as well. He moved toward a building, peeking the corner and taking a closer look.

"What is the meaning of this? What are you lot doing to that woman?" Ellena used her paladin abilities to Detect Evil as she called out to the gathered collection of soldiers.

Avelina charged straight into the middle of the street. She placed one hand on her hip and pointed towards each of the warriors in-turn.

"In the name of Iomedae the Inheritor and the Crown of Mendev, declare yourselves and your purpose in demanding this woman's sacrifice!"

She took up a commanding pose, her arms folded and her head raised. Her eyes glared with a fierce, imperious light.

"Cultists walk this city in the guise of Her servants, so you had best be convincing."

Anarya moved up with the others, standing beside and slightly behind Avelina with her halo's light shining. "You stand in the presence of Lady Avelina of House Galfrey, crusaders. Don't do anything rash," she warned, hoping the noblewoman's authority would calm these nervous soldiers.

Map of the Marchlands | Wintersun Hall

A crusader who was running toward the others stopped upon hearing the words of Avelina. She turned and moved back north, her longsword drawn, her wooden shield ready. She had on a standard issue breastplate and her shield had the holy symbol of Iomedae.

If you are a virgin and a follower of Iomedae, then we would have your assistance in a ritual. Your blood on a longsword will make it capable of doing incredible harm to demons. Otherwise, do not interfere.

The horrors of the demonic invasion had driven some to the brink of madness. These knights, desperate to drive back the demons, had latched onto an old folktale—that sheathing one’s blade in the body of a virgin temporarily transforms the sword into a demon-slaying weapon.

Horgus seemed not to notice what was going on in the street to the south or he did not care about that as much as his house, for he ran on into the house, saying "Where are my guards?! If they deserted their posts, I'll ..." The rest of his words were lost as he entered the manor's front door.

The woman had been grabbed, forced to her knees, and held by two of the crusaders (#1 and #3). She struggled in vain to break their grip. The crusader with the sword was shifting his grip on his longsword and raising it as if to stab it like a dagger into the upper part of the woman's torso. The other crusader across from him was trying to pull her head back so she would be looking up at the sky. He had not yet gotten her head into the desired position. The woman was sobbing as she struggled.

It is going to take a good diplomacy or intimidate result to convince them to interrupt their ritual. If that fails, it will take physical force to save the woman. Karas and Tauni can still act before the crusaders. Avelina, Anarya, Tauni, and/or Karas can make rolls. I'll take the best result as the primary roll with others serving as potential aids. There are some minuses and attempting to use diplomacy at the same time as intimidate will also be less effective than one or the other.

Edit: Wenduag and Wren stay with Wren's siblings. They will begin to move to a safer place next turn.

Avelina's first instinct was to scold the soldiers for their lack of respect and propriety, and if there weren't soldiers of Iomedae in their number, she certainly would have. No, she would not cross swords with the misguided servants of her Goddess. Her heartbeat quickened, and she knew what she needed to do, what Iomedae would have done:

She would speak from the heart.

Avelina suddenly loosened her body and unfolded her arms. As she inched forward towards the soldiers with each step, she smiled warmly. Her voice remained calm and level, though with a resounding reverence.

She unhooked her mace from her belt and tossed it to the ground.

"Please, cease this chasing of folktales. Let the girl go. I know it may feel easy to succumb to the desire to live at all costs, to become a prisoner of your free will, but in times such as now, we must remember."

She unloaded her crossbow and dropped it. Still advancing.

"Remember the words of the Inheritor's Code: "My strength is not in my sword, but in my heart. If I lose my sword, I have lost a tool. If I betray my heart, I have died.'"

She dropped the quiver of bolts. Still advancing.

"The demons wish for nothing more than for us to forget our hearts. They wish for us to kill ourselves so they can laugh at our pain. If you have forgotten your heart, no sword--no matter how much you attempt to anoint it with blood--shall ever cut through the demon hordes."

She unhooked her sheathed sword from her belt. Still advancing.

"If when you venture into the deepest vestiges of your heart, the places in which your joy and wonder and love live, you think that I am wrong..."

Now, directly in front of the crusader woman, Avelina gazed directly into her eyes, still smiling. She held out her sheathed sanctified cold iron longsword in her palms, offering it as though it were a sacrifice at an altar.

"...then you can cut my throat yourself."

Avelina tilted her head back, exposing her neck, and closed her eyes.

Technically, Avelina couldn't move that far during her turn, but her post was so dramatic, I'm going to overlook that.

Tauni moved up next to Ellena, the better to see what was going on and prepare her spell. Karas was able to reach Franti as Avelina was finishing her dramatic march toward a test of faith and reason.

The woman held out her broadsword, listening to Avelina's words but clearly not wanting to give up on the ritual. Uncertainly rippled across her features like moonlight on a windswept lake.

Anevia moved closer, bow ready, took in Avelina's attempt at persuasion, and called out, "Obey her as you would obey Iomedae herself!" Her voice was less an order than a plea.

The crusader holding the woman on her knees turned and stared at Avelina as she spoke and walked, calmly discarding weapons. She and the others struggled with emotions deep and troubling, with visions of demon hoards killing their friends clouding their thoughts, horrors no mortal should have to witness. As Avelina reached the woman crusader blocking the road and bared her neck to the blade, the woman raised her sword, as if about to plunge it into Avelina's chest. As she did, a shaft of sunlight broke through a hole in the cloud cover and bathed Avelina in light. A glimmer of silver reflected from Terendelev's scale and flashed in each crusader's eyes.

The other crusader woman groaned and reached up and gripped the upraised sword of her comrade. "Stop!" she cried. The other woman turned her head, hesitated, then drove the sword down into the ground in front of her and knelt behind it, head bowed. Sobbing.

The men let the woman go and stepped back, unsure what they had just witnessed.

Melee averted.

Avelina returned her sword to her belt, then held out her arms wide, open and ready for an embrace if that's what the girl needed.

"Are you okay, darling? It's all over now. Righteousness has prevailed, as it always shall."

Underneath it all, she was inching away from collapsing into a ball of tears. She knew she believed, that she trusted her Goddess would protect her. But she could feel the fear in that frail animal part of her, the weakness just trembling to burst from her skin. Her body knew that it had been moments away from death, and every piece of it screamed at her, demanding to know why.

She did the only thing she knew how to: she stuffed that feeling down.

The fool spun his saps, sheathing them in his bandolier. He ignored the remaining soldier, instead hopping towards Avelina, placing a hand on her shoulder and pulling her back gently. Franti spoke through a gritted grin, "Come now, princess, back to our own, before they change their minds."

The crusaders hesitated and looked back at Anarya. They were all struck by her beauty and then the effect of her words, infused with divine energy, persuaded them to remain. They called out the names of the two who fled in shame. The conferred for a moment, but hemmed and hawed about remaining to stand guard over innocents. "We cannot stay as you ask, I am sorry," the de facto leader offered, sounding truly sorry. Before they trudged south away from the center of the city, the leader turned and said, "Thank you for opening our eyes. For what it's worth, you need to beware of more than just demons. Some residents of the city were secretly in league with the demons. You probably know about the cultists of Deskari, for our leaders have been actively seeking to root them out even before this attack. But there are other cults who have been active. Some still roam the streets, causing trouble. Many wear armor or holy symbols of the good deities, but they are not to be trusted." The then departed. They ignored any more attempts to turn them into guards for Wren's family.

Meanwhile, Horgus emerged from the manor. "My worthless guards and servants have all deserted their posts, may Asmodeus take them! They helped themselves to a considerable amount of my more valuable possessions!"

He glared about, waiting for others to share his indignation. Then he continued, somewhat reluctantly, "But Abadar be praised, they did not know how to open my vault. If you still want that reward I offered, I will honor my promise, although it will leave my coffers severely depleted." He tried to look poverty stricken at the prospect of paying out all that gold, but his attitude toward the group had softened considerably over the past week and it did not take much wisdom to tell that he was exaggerating both his financial limitations and his reluctance to pay you what he promised, mostly a conditioned reflex of years of being as stingy as possible with his wealth. "You probably don't want to wander the ruins of Kenabres with all that gold weighing you down, so I'll be happy to keep it in my vault until such time as it is safe to transport it."

He invited Wren and her family inside. "The house is intact and we can keep safe inside so long as one of those gigantic demons of destruction does not return. These walls are secure and all the windows have bars."

"You are welcome to stay too, if you need to. Or if you want a safe place to sleep tonight, just knock four times, then three, then five. Then I'll open the door."

"Keep your gold. Take my share and give it to Wren and her family when we get the town back to normal. They will need a fresh start. I'll be busy rooting every demon and cultist out of this place," Ellena declares. Once Horgus and the family were safe, Ellena stood ready to proceed further into the town.

Franti gave a jolly laugh to the paladin. "Keep the gold, she says! I didn't know you for a jokester, Ellena! Personally, I'd rather be burdened with coin than responsibilities, so... Where's this vault, Horgy?"

After a several moments, the fool laughed once more. "I was joking! No need for the looks, I'm a jester, remember?" The fool crossed his arms and shook his head. "Followers of Iomedae and Abadar are far too serious. Why couldn't we have a paladin of Cayden Cailean?"

"Isn't that what you are, my friend?"

Tauni considered a moment and said "If you would be so kind as to hold my share in your vault for now, I would be obliged. Besides, it will give me an excuse to stop back and visit after a bit."

"Me? Oh, Rabbit, such words hurt me. I couldn't live such a life, I constantly break the paladin's central tenet: No fun allowed." Franti chuckled, slapping the paladin on the back. His hand recoiled, her armor evidently having more of an impact on his hand then he thought.

Franti curled his fist and stretched his hand, somewhat pained. He winked at Ellena. "Dread not, for everyone has the ability to be fun. Perhaps it is locked away, hiding neath armor and holy vows, screaming to be released... I just need to discover what'll get it out of you..." Franti stares at Ellena, filled with resolve over his new, foolish quest.

The jester shook himself out of the thoughts. "Where to next? So far we've battled birds and bullies, shall we take a bet on what we'll find en route to wherever next?"

For just a minute, Tauni let herself go, and continues the alliteration. "Bandits? Bulettes? Bats? B-" She stopped herself suddenly and her expression collapsed to the brink of tears when she realized she was going to say 'Balor'.

"We should move on," she said weakly.

Horgus' expression brightened when Ellena said, "Keep my share." It dimmed just as fast when she instructed him to give her share to Wren and her family. When Tauni suggested she wanted or needed an excuse to visit him, he looked a little taken aback, apparently not used to people visiting him without wanting to wheedle some money out of him. "My door will always open to you, provided you give the knock. When services to Abadar resume, we should attend," he suggested tentatively, trying on the feeling of having some hope of life returning to normal. "I have set 2000 gp aside for your use. Divide it any way you please. I owe you my life."

Then his gruff old self returned and he ran back into the house, saying, "What demons didn't destroy, a house full of children will surely ruin."

The next stop as the group heads north would be the apartment Irabeth and Anevia shared. It is about a quarter mile away, but the group will have to cross another gash that cuts west to east across the eastern Gates district.

Avelina had already needed every last bit of her strength to hold herself together. These villains who had just been willing to kill an innocent woman had the gall to not only deny her Gracious Offer, but to LAUGH in her face? This was all wrong. Her face flushed bright red and she began screaming.

"YOU DARE--"

She cut herself off as soon as Anarya began speaking. Avelina marched off behind one of the nearby buildings and knelt down, her fists clenched as if gripping the necks of the ungrateful crusaders and her teeth grinding against each other. She wanted to scream. Not wanting to make a sound, she made the motions of a scream, her mouth opened wide, but she would not let a sound come out. She could begin to feel the reality of the situation she had put herself in, one misstep away from the grave, but she stuffed it back down. She wasn't ready to face that yet.

She finally stepped back out once the crusaders had gone and she had regained her composure. She folded her arms and kept her head high, as though nothing of consequence had happened.

"Ingrates. They had an opportunity to wash away their misdeeds, but now, I shall have to report them when Auntie gets here."

She gave her most regal nod and smile as Horgus offers his reward. She spoke with reserve, falling back upon the etiquette she had learned about the acceptance of gifts.

"I shall happily accept your generosity in the name of House Galfrey. The Queen shall know of the quality of your character and magnanimity the next we meet."

Avelina turned instantly towards Ellena when she heard her Champion deny the gift and pass it on to the Wren family. Such a selfless, perfect gesture warmed Avelina's heart and softened the regal facade.

After Horgus ran back into his house, Avelina took Ellena aside for a moment.

"Gifts have a special meaning amongst the upper classes, My Champion. You are well within your power to donate it to others or use it as you see fit once it is given to you, but to deny a gift graciously given, even in the name of virtue, can be seen as a slight."

She managed a honest, warm smile and placed a hand on Ellena's shoulder.

"It is just a minor thing, but if you are to be My Champion, we must educate you in matters of propriety and etiquette."

Avelina straightened her back and placed her hands on her hips, a heroic and proud pose.

"Once the demons are defeated, as they inevitably shall be, we shall take care of such education back at court in Nerosyan."

"Sorry, fool. Looking at the town doesn't give me any reason for joy now. Once we get the demons out and get things back to normal, I think you'll see I can laugh. Every once in a while," Ellena explained to her jester friend.

"It will make me happy getting Anevia and her wife back together. Let's go find her..."

Ravine Crossing Map

Moving through the eastern Gates district, there was more evidence of damage and destruction, but it began to be more isolated houses rather than large blocks of the city that were damaged. The streets were still largely deserted. Anevia, still limited by her injured leg, did her best to move quickly. She carried the weapons that had been used by Wenduag, who still followed the group. So far she had kept her word, had not tried to escape, and had even helped with the battles and relief efforts. She said little but she appeared to be thinking hard about many things.

For five minutes, it was uneventful, picking through the rubble in the streets, heading north, with no evidence of people or beasts other than the occasional rat or dog slinking in the alleys. Then the buildings fell away, or at least, they had already fallen away into a ravine that was hundreds of feet wide and 50 feet down. At the bottom of the ravine, a small stream had formed. At places, it disappeared into apparent sinkholes or connections to the caves beneath the city. With nothing to do to get around it, the group began to pick its way down the ravine walls and toward the bottom of the ravine. The stream was ankle deep and filled with brown water that smelled none too pure.

See the map and move yourselves one double move worth of movement. All passable squares are difficult terrain, so this amounts to only a normal move action worth of movement. Keep in mind that Anevia can only move at 20. Next post will have surprise rolls and initiative, so make sure your spells and such are in order. The black box at the right on the map is an area that cannot be observed due to large boulders and remants of a house blocking the view.

Karas smiled as Anarya's words moved the crusaders to at least reconsider their actions. He placed a hand on her shoulder as Horgus caught their attention.

"Please hold on to my portion. I'd rather not decide what to do with it yet and I think we have plenty to do besides worry about that right now. Thank you."

-------------------------------------------
In the ravine, Karas looked back and with Ellena and Anevia weighed down by armor and injury, it would fall on Karas and Franti to be the vanguard.

He moved forward boldly.

Ellena followed the tiefling, carefully. Her heavy shiny armor was useful for many things, but climbing down a steep ravine, trying to keep from pitching down into a stream was certainly not one of them. "Mind your footing, Lady. It's quite tricky..."

Franti had his pants rolled to his knees, and his belled shoes lie dry at the top of his bag. The fool avoided the debris of buildings with a twirling dance, kicking up the foul water.

Moved forward, I guess I'd have my bow out?

Anarya hiked up her robes as she waded through the tainted waters. The once-pristine white garments marking her as a healer were already badly stained from the ordeals she had endured since the fall of the city, but there was no use in making it even worse. She would likely have received changes of clothes and a uniform when she joined a crusader regiment after Armasse, if everything had gone the way it was supposed to. Will I still do that? Go, and sign up with the crusaders? she wondered. Haven't I already done that, by joining these other warriors and fighters?

Avelina held her Champion's arm as the party continued on. The contact with another person helped to calm the princess, still shaken from the encounter with the crusaders.

"You are ever so considerate, My Champion."

Avelina paused, adjusting her hair.

"I will follow your lead."

The group picked its way through the ravine, Karas in the lead. They were generally quiet except for the clink of Karas' scales on his armor and Tauni, who tripped on rock that shifted under her foot, sending a small avalanche of stones rattling toward the stream. Just before reaching the stream, a large boulder on the left and the remnants of a collapsed house on the right framed the only way across the stream without detouring up or down stream. With Tauni's warning alerting Karas to the webs, he pulled up short. Now that he was looking for it, he saw the gleaming strands reflecting the dull light of the cloudy day near the ground and stretched across the gap about ankle to waist high.

Tauni aimed her bow and soon had a target as a large black spider scuttled over the ruined house to attack the creature about to enter her web. Her shot sailed over the bulbous abdomen of the massive vermin the size of a horse. She noticed a red hourglass shape under the creature's abdomen.
