Ellena took aim and her blade cut an arc throuh the air as she screamed with fury at the evil creature for taking her very mind away from her.

As Chaleb lifted his sword to strike at Avelina, Ellena recovered her mind and acted instantly, sending the glowing blade of Radiance slicing down into Chaleb's shoulder, sending gushes of blood down his already blood covered tabard. Chaleb's eyes rolled up and closed and he collapsed at the feet of the breathless crusaders, his sword clattering away from his hand, its foul light extinguished.

Wenduag saw the man fall and immediately stood gripping the dagger she had received from Horgus. When her eyes fell on Horgus, he recoiled as she raised the dagger to throw it. However, she three the dagger up at the cacodaemon hovering nearby.

On the Table:
Wenduag: Dagger, point blank: 1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 6 + 1 = 16

The dagger just missed the little blighter.

Horgus cut at the ropes on another librarian.

Tauni hesitated, nursing the nasty bite she got from the daemon. She looked for where her allies were, looking to see if any might be a distraction she would need to try and catch it again.

Delaying.

Avelina reared back as Chaleb prepared to swing at her. With the seeming betrayal of her Champion, she momentarily questioned her Fate. Would this be the end of her story? Was life not one of her Romances, but instead one of those atrocious grim and dark tales full of unhappy people dying pointless deaths to contagion, chance, or an antipaladin with a flaming longsword who can't say more than two phrases?

Her Faith was rewarded when Ellena struck down the antipaladin. Avelina breathed even easier than normal, for she had been brought low only to find the Inheritor's loving hand there to catch her. While the brief attack against Karas still confused Avelina, she could belay that concern for a moment.

She stared down the cacodaemon. It looked so small now. She pitied it in its smallness, its pettiness.

"The Might of the Inheritor turns upon you, beast. Your master could not face us. What hope do you have? Fly low and bow your head so we may cleave it from you in one clean stroke and save you the pain of further strife."

While Tauni and Franti watched the cacodaemon to see what it would do next, Avelina hurled threats at it, in case it was not sufficiently shaken by Karas' snarling. Anevia drew back her bow and unleashed a shot of admirable accuracy and the arrow should have skewered the thing, but much of the momentum of the arrow seemed to melt as it touched its skin and the arrow dropped after only drawing a little blood. Most of the damage that had been done to the creature earlier looked to have healed already. Also, the glitter that had been making it easy to spot as it flew around had faded.

Fenna continued to fumble at the ropes, seeking to free her comrades so they could be treated properly, now that it seemed the initial threat was past. The one other conscious librarian managed to help her unknot the last of the ropes Chaleb had bound them with.

The cacodaemon flew up high and then dove down to bite one of the unconscious librarians, inflicting a nasty bite to push the unfortunate scholar closer to death. The minor wound that Anevia made healed almost instantly.

It has AC 17, so you can tell if you hit or not and narrate your own results.

Even as the thing snarled and snapped at her, Tauni wrapped her hands around it and held it low, within the reach of her friends.

I am assuming the 17 roll will beat its CMD. I'll save that 20 in case it bites Tauni with its AoO and she has to make a saving throw.

As it did with Chaleb, Radiance cut true. But while the sword glowed with light, it did not have the material or the holy properties needed to cut fully into the evil outsider. As the blade reached the cacodaemon, it was as if some of the momentum was drained from it and it hurt the creature, but not as much as it might have. 6 damage.

Wenduag had no weapon, having thrown the dagger Horgus had given her at the daemon. But when she saw Tauni about to try to grab it, she tried to aid her so the cacodaemon could not bite her hand again. Aid successful, so +2 to Tauni's AC.

On the Table:

Karas rushed to attack the foul creature as well, but his claws could not make contact with it. As he fought, he saw how Ellena's blade had lost some of its potency and he recalled that his mentor had given him a silver scale that could make his claws able to overcome this defensive magic.

Horgus delayed his attack to give Karas time to attack to make his own attack more likely to hit as the creature defended itself against two attack. He almost sent the point of his rapier straight down the cacodaemon's throat, but it caught on some bit of gristle. As with the attacks of the other crusaders, his rapier lost a lot of it's impact just as it started to drive into the creature's flesh. 3 points.

On the Table:
Cacodaemon AOO: (vs AC 14) bite, shaken: 1d20 + 9 - 2 ⇒ (3) + 9 - 2 = 10

Tauni tried to grab it in her hand again, looking a bit like a girl trying to grab a polywog floating in a shallow stream. The daemon tried to bite her hand again, but Wenduag gave it a kick as it did so and it was enough to cause it to miss. Tauni's hand grabbed it and held it by the tail.

Anarya's halo glowed and healing energy again penetrated the wounds of her friends and allies, leaving only a few minor cuts on Franti and Karas and healing enough of the librarians wounds to bring all but one back to consciousness. The terrified librarians woke to find glowing swords, rapiers, and Tiefling claws slashing at the tiny creature held in the giant hand of a ten foot tall wizard.

Wounds closed and filled with a healing warmth, Franti squatted to inspect the downed assailant. After giving the man a cautious poke to the head, the goblin rose, and walked towards the crowd of librarians and allies who sought to swat down the little daemon.

He leaned against the bookshelf knowing he was too far to land a sap on the creature, and his friends surrounded it too close for him to throw a knife. Franti tried to catch his breath.

As she swung at the daemon, trying to at least distract it momentarily to allow Tauni to press the attack, her lack of experience with the weapon shows. The point falls, the sword almost tipping out of her hand, as she forgot the weight of the sword.

As Franti caught his breath, Avelina attempted to use her longsword to keep it from wriggling free of Tauni's grasp, but the heavy sword was not much help in her inexperienced hands. The only square around the cacodaemon that would afford Avelina a place to stand is the square the daemon is in, since it is tiny and the librarian there is unconscious. The other librarians are conscious but prone, so no PCs or NPCs can move into those squares.

Fenna dragged one of the now conscious librarians clear of the fight.

Anevia stepped back and readied to fire two arrows at the creature should it slip out of Tauni's grasp. The librarians stood and moved away from the vile creature.

Behind the screen:
Cacodaemon attempts to use spell-like ability, must make concentration check of 10 + Tauni's CMB + spell level = 10 + 1 + 1 = 12 concentration, shaken: 1d20 + 7 - 2 ⇒ (8) + 7 - 2 = 13
The daemon managed to direct a confusion spell at Tauni.

Tauni:
The cacodaemon cast a spell-like ability at Tauni, after succeeding on the necessary concentration check. Will: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24
But Tauni is completely unaffected by the attempt.

The cacodaemon wriggles ineffectually in Tauni's hand, concentrating on something. Nothing happens, however, that anyone can see.

Radiance does lethal damage to the creature and it stops struggling and goes unconscious. Its wounds continued to heal, but between the other crusaders with weapons at the ready, the vile thing was wounded to the point where it died and no longer healed itself.

Melee is over.

Anarya sent out more healing energy to insure that none of the librarians perished. Only one librarian had any wounds left # 5, has 5 points. Chaleb was not dead, only knocked unconscious.

The party can barricade the doors and remain safe in the librarium until all have rested and recovered for traveling on. The librarians will fill everyone in on events in the city, such as is known to them, and will recommend traveling in daylight. More details to follow as I get time over the next few days, including loot from Chaleb and others things that might be found in the librarium.

"The bastard took over my mind. I'm sorry for striking you. That wasn't honorable. I'll ask for forgiveness from Iomedae for that. I'm sorry," Ellena repeated to the tiefling.

The paladin was in favor of staying in the library for the evening, assuming it could be made defensible. She was quieter than usual, and separated early from the others, saying prayers before falling asleep, as well as doing the same upon awakening. It was as if she was hoping to pray the weakness of her clouded mind away.

The librarium main hall is intact and quite defensible. There are no windows and the main doors are strong and can be barred from the inside. There are no other ways in. There is a trap door hidden in the floor leading to a cellar with supplies but it does not connect to anywhere else.

Fenna, the librarian who had been gathering books for Chaleb when the crusaders arrived, verified that her colleagues were okay and then addressed the group. "Thank you very much and may Iomedae bless you and your children. I am Fenna Stuckwelt, the most senior of the surviving custodians of the Blackwing. When thet demons attacked the city, we had only a few minutes to respond. Those who could fight left to defend the city. We who remained barred the door and hid in the cellar. We were very frightened as we felt the very ground shaking. That must have been when the buildings around the librarium were demolished. Fortunately, this building was designed as a fortress and it protected us. A few Riftwardens returned and we let them in. Together we defended this place until Chaleb showed up. He looked like a crusader and convinced us we should let him in, but once he got in, he and that awful creature attacked the riftwardens, killed them all, and then set about to burn us and the books. If you hadn't arrived when you did, he would have succeeded. What news can you tell us about the state of the crusaders in the city?"

Male Elf

Aravashnial momentarily mastered his grief and, with the help of Anevia and Horgus, made his way around the room inspecting the bodies of the slain Riftwardens. By the time he was done, all color had drained from his face and he sat slumped against a wall, lost in his own internal emotional turmoil. Eventually, he explained: "I may be the last of the Riftwardens. We kept our identities secret to better be able to gather information and to keep safe from spies of the Worldwound. But there's not much point now."

Roleplay as you wish and then we can advance to daylight of the next day.

I've put a link to the note that the group found in the lair where Hosilla was running a cell of the Cult of the Ivory Labyrinth. The three safe houses are in known locations. Nyserian Manor is quite close, just to the north through a section of the city that was devastated by something powerful. The other two locations can be found by traveling around the outer section on the east side of the city, a path that will also take the party toward Horgus' estate and Anevia and Irabeth's house, as well as Karas' apartment and the former residence of Terendelev.

If any defenders of Kenabres remain, it would be best to search for them at the outskirts of the walled city as once daylight affords a view of the hill where Old Kenabres sits, it can be seen that not much remains of that part. The fortress that had the wardstone and Cathedral of Saint Clydwell are both obliterated.

Once the librarians learn that the group was returning to the city from the caves below, they are crestfallen. Fenna shares that the Riftwardens who were slain revealed before they died that the main armies of the demons had departed, leaving behind a small occupying force. There were crusaders still alive and keeping up the resistance, including a group of the Eagle's Watch.

They shared a few rumors they had heard:

Lord Hulrun was killed during the attack and the demons have his body on display!

The Eagle Watch and a few other crusading groups survived the attack, and have set up a fortified camp at Defender’s Heart, which is an old Inn to the NE of the center of Kenabres in the Gates district.

Nerosyan’s been completely destroyed by the demons! Nerosyan is the Capital city of Mendev and HQ of the crusade.

Deskari himself took part in the attack on the city! Deskari is a demon lord allegedly leading the Worldwound Incursion.

There seem to be multiple types of demon cultists at large in the city—they’re not all worshipers of Deskari.

Treasure in Blackwing:
In addition to his armor, shield, and mundane equipment, Chaleb had a +1 longsword. It's flaming nature does not seem to be part of its function and was apparently a benefit of serving his evil god. He also had 2 potions of Cure Light Wounds.

Franti noticed a book in the stacks that he brought to the attention of Tauni, a damaged wizard's spellbook. It contains the following spells: alarm, dismissal, dispel magic, magic circle against chaos, resist energy, and versatile weapon. Tucked in the pages of what is left of the spellbook is a scroll of dimensional lock.

Anarya also spotted something odd in the rubble: a half-dozen leathery gray strips of what appears at first to be flesh, but that, upon closer examination, looks to be dried worms of some sort about as long as a human finger. No one has the necessary ranks in Knowledge (Nature) to identify them.

One other important bit of information from the librarians: they hid themselves in the cellar and the riftwardens who were defending the librarium were overpowered early in the battle. The interior of the archive was looted, resulting in much of the devastation to the place. A number of important relics were taken, including a staff of healing, a flying carpet, and an instant fortress, as well as many rare books. Other items stolen were more mundane treasures of jewelry, artwork, and religious icons.

"I just, um, feel like sitting for a moment."

Avelina maintained her proper poise just long enough to find a place to sit. Regardless of the dark magic at work, the sight of her Champion turning and striking her ally had shaken Avelina, and she needed a rest. She had not even noticed the bits of blood that had sprayed onto her hair and clothes. Still seated, legs crossed, she nodded her head in regard to Fenna and her fellow librarians.

"A pleasure to meet you, Fenna. My name is Avelina. Yes, the Avelina, niece of the Queen. Don't worry about it, though. We don't stand on ceremony in Mendev."

While she appeared to be convinced of her own earnest desire for informal interaction, everyone could hear the unvoiced "but I certainly wouldn't mind standing on ceremony, either" addendum. Either way, Avelina remained seated as she politely listened to the news.

She prickled at the rumored word of her city. As she spoke, her gaze darted from one corner of the room to another, as though she could find some proof of Nerosyan's safety propped-up against a wall.

"Nerosyan destroyed?! No, that's impossible. Improbable. Inconceivable. It carries the Blessing of Iomedae. And Auntie would...."

She had found proof. Well, proof enough for her.

"Auntie is there! She is an Unstoppable Force of Righteousness. The city could never fall while she is there. Right? Right. Absolutely. Without question."

She smiled to herself as she straightened her back, folding her hands comfortably on her knee crossed on top of the other. She had subconsciously learned long ago that mimicking the movements and postures of confidence was a good enough substitution for the real thing.

Fenna and the other librarians were as helpful as they could be under the circumstances. They showed everyone the cellar and offered anyone food or water who wanted. It was standard iron rations that were kept on hand for such emergencies, nothing that would make the mouth water, but plenty to quiet any noisy stomachs.

When Avelina indicated her relation to the queen, the librarians looked both honored to be in the presence of royalty and worried that such an important person was in such a dreadful situation. The possibility that Nerosyan had fallen carried with it the possibility that Avelina would ascend to the throne when things got sorted out. After offering her every comfort they could, which was not much, they mostly kept their distance, but one of them was always watching and eager to rush to be of service should she request it.

Aravashnial gradually regained his composure and resumed his generally sober mien. He attended to the bodies as best he could, with the help of Horgus and Anevia. He volunteered to remain in Blackwing. He felt he was a burden, with his conjuring limited by his blindness. The librarians said they would happily stay in the librarium if the others promised they would send for them when they found a safe place to go.

Wenduag offered to help where she could. She did not complain about anything, although she was mostly quiet and sullen. Her strange features made it harder for anyone to read the state of her emotions.

When Franti returned to his human form, he was oddly chipper. Since first removing his paint in Hosilla’s lair, the pale young man had never appeared quite this happy. His demeanor had drastically changed from not half an hour ago, when he was intent on leaving the city and its denizens behind. When the librarian introduced himself, Franti grinned, rolled his eyes and looked to Tauni. “Another Iomodean? She looks after Her own, I’ll give Her that.” After Avelina made her introduction, Franti looked somewhat surprised. Princess didn’t give her full title, how strange.

Despite being surrounded by the bodies of several librarians, the somewhat throbbing pain from Chaleb’s attack, and the grim updates to what was going on in Kenabres, Franti kept his cheery attitude. His mouth often formed a wide, stretched smile, and when it wasn’t, it was because he decided to whistle a cheery tune.

Franti tried to make the longsword burst into flame, trying to replicate the qualities it had in their earlier fight. He listed commands in Taldane, Skald, and Varisian, all phrases that perhaps he would give to a flaming sword. “Fan the flames,” “fuel to the fire,” “burn to a cinder.” When none of the commands worked, he brought the sword close to his mouth, and whispered “the beautiful die first.” He hung his head defeated when it wouldn’t light. “Well, looks like I won’t be joining the Longsword Club...

Franti fanned the rumors throughout the night. He brought them back to the group as if he was a gossiper, adding his own theories to each matter. “One of a fool’s many expertise is rumors! They are fuel for our jokes after all, another tool in our jesterly arsenal! Working so often with them I’ve learned it easy to separate the real scandals from the, well, rumors. Hulren dead? True, certainly so! He had many more enemies than just demons.” Franti worked his way towards Avelina. “You’re right, Princess! Nerosyan overtaken? Tis but a rumor! Even if it was, how would news reach this devastated city hundreds of miles away? Would Nerosyan be attacked, we’d not hear of it at all!

In the morning, Franti crawled out from his bedroll and opened up his bag, removing his jesterly attire and his face paint. With some of his remaining water, he washed his face of the dirt and grime. He propped his mirror on one of the bookshelves and examined his features. Franti looked at his remaining paints, wondering if perhaps he might find another set abandoned in the streets or pillages shops. Maybe a Cultist clown or a particularly whimsical demon had already scavenged them, or perhaps there was another living jester in Kenabres.

Franti painted his face with a silver base, giving him an almost metallic sheen. He marked his eyelids with gold paint, and below he painted a thin crescent of white. He used a softer shade than usual for his lips, carving a sky-blue smile that stretched to his cheekbones. He dabbed a small white dot just above his chin, and made one more by each edge of his painted grin. He put on his coral wig, tried to clean his outfit of any marks or cuts, and donned his uniform.

The fool grabbed his journal and skipped past the page already marked “To my love, my darling dearest Opaline,” instead flipping to a page adjacent to a notated drawing of Iomedae and a Princess charging a minotaur-creature. He began to write jokes, stories and poems, gathering material to raise the spirits of those around him.

We might be able to get some good info from Chaleb. Also, should we keep him alive?

Franti grinned, rolled his eyes and looked to Tauni. “Another Iomodean? She looks after Her own, I’ll give Her that.

Tauni tried to muster a smile as she bantered back. "They just seem to be everywhere, don't they?" Then the faint smile faded and she hugged herself against a memory before she added "As fine of friends as they are, I could do with crossing paths with some of my friends from the Abadaran contingent..." For a moment she considered asking the librarians, but stopped herself. I don't think I'm ready for more bad news.

In the morning, Tauni approached the elf, pulling him aside for a moment to talk.

"Sir, you revealed yourself as one of the Riftwardens." Her choice of words was careful, hoping to imply that they may yet be others that survived. "Can I ask you about them now that, well, we are where we are? I have a mark on my forearm, a birthmark. My mentor told me that it is associated with the Riftwardens. It looks like this..." She took his hand and with a finger traced the shape of her birthmark in his palm. "I didn't know my birth parents; I was raised by-" she choked on her words at the memory of her foster parents, but mustered her control and continued. "I was raised by a fine family here in the city. Could, could one of my parents have been a Riftwarden? I know that without seeing me, it may be hard to place a resemblance, but..." She went on to describe herself as best she could to hopefully trigger an association.

Once Karas regained his breath he started to help clear the debris and fortify the building. He also made sure Chaleb was bound and gagged to prevent him from channeling that awful energy.

He looked about trying his best to be helpful in this time of need. Once need of the eagle watch at defenders heart came up he, the hope in hs eyes was renewed.

He still gave Ellena a wide berth but didnt openly antagonize the paladin.

He sat against the wall that night with clear view of the entrances and replayed the fight in his head. His inability to stop the fall of the chandelier, the near casualties, if it hadn't been for the light of Anarya many would have died there.

He came back to reality realizing he was seeing at the aasimar, blushed and quickly looked away.

Aravashnial took so long before answering that Tauni began to wonder if he had heard her, but eventually he sighed and nodded. "We are ... or were a secretive lot, so it is possible I know your parents well but they never disclosed that they had a child they did not raise. I cannot do much now, but when I get my sight back and I can look to see what remains of our journals here, perhaps I can learn something. I promise I will do what I can to help you. You have done so much for me."

Before the party left to continue exploring the city, Aravashnial addressed the group. "I will remain here and await aid when it can be sent. I urge you, however, when you find the resistance that remains, make sure the leadership knows what we have found: the Cult of the Ivory Labyrinth has been infiltrating our city for some time. Go to those safe houses and find all the evidence of this that you can. I tried to warn others of this before and they were ... skeptical. There may be some who are still operating as spies, so the leadership MUST know this threat is real. Do what you have to do to convince anyone who will listen. May the gods watch over you."

After he finishes, he adds, "Avelina. May I have a word with you." He talks to Avelina in private.

Avelina:
"You need to know something. You said earlier that you think yourself to be a kind of cleric. Perhaps you meant oracle, but although I cannot see you, I think I can enlighten you about your ... gifts. The spells you cast, the way you cast them, I assume no one taught these to you, you just figured it out, correct?"

Even if Avelina contradicts the conjurer, he ignores it and continues, "You are a sorcerer. It must be in your blood. It is known to run in the royal family. Your spells are arcane, not divine."

If Avelina objects, he ignores it again and says, "I can teach you much, although my magic is prepared, not spontaneous. When this crisis is managed, return to me and I will do what I can to nurture your gift, for it is a gift, just not the one you thought it was."

If Avelina protests, he ignores it and lets her say what she will.

"No more than you've done for all of us. We could chase off the darkness with spells and torches; you've been consigned to it until we can get you cured. And yet you didn't despair; you gave us your wisdom until we could work free. We won't forget."

She paused and bit her lip, then continued. "I hate to ask it of you when there are such dire needs all around us. But in times like this, family can be even more important than ever. Thank you, my friend." She leaned in and gave him a gentle kiss on the forehead. "I'll check back with you as soon as I can. Until then, remain brave; you are needed here. May Abadar watch over you and this cornerstone of civilization."

Avelina stared back at Aravashnial in disbelief, her mouth agape. She began rapidly pacing back and forth, the world disappearing for her as she devoted all her energy to resolving this crisis.

"What? That's...utterly ridiculous! Of course it's divine magic. Why wouldn't it be? I must be like an oracle, one without a curse. Yes, that's it! Iomedae is the Greatest Goddess that Ever Was and Ever Will Be; of course she could give someone oracle powers without cursing them!"

She straightened her back and stood tall, arms akimbo as she raised her head high. She had read enough romances and fairy tales with benevolent rules and thus knew what magnanimity looked and sounded like, and did her best to mimic those postures and movements. In practice, she had difficulty differentiating a patronizing tone from a magnanimous one.

"I understand your concerns, and I appreciate your earnest candor. However, you are quite mistaken. I do not hold it against you; matters of Faith are not your field."

She smiled and turned her glance towards Tauni, discretely motioning for Aravashnial to follow her gaze.

"Our dear little Rabbit would benefit far more from your attentions. She is both a wizard like you and has an interest in the Riftwardens. That's why she was speaking with you, right? I can write her a letter of recommendation if you like."

Anarya moved over to Karas as he bound the unconscious antipaladin, and ensured that any holy symbols of his foul god are far from his reach. She hovered around the librarians, feeling guilty for not thinking more clearly about how she could have saved them with Terendelev's scale. "I am glad you are all okay. I only wish I had reacted sooner - I... know magic which could have stopped the chandelier entirely, and didn't think to use it in time. I am sorry you were hurt at all." As she concluded, she used her last spell to heal the one librarian still with wounds.

Cure Light Wounds: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11

She glanced up as the last of her light sealed the librarian's wounds, seeing Karas looking at her, and thought he might have been trying to get her attention. She walked over to the wall where he rested, and sat down beside him, tired herself from the day's exertions. For all her gifts, the stress of battle was still new to the young woman. "Did you need something, Karas?" she asked, privately hoping he did. Being near the tiefling always made her heart flutter.

The librarians put out the torches that Chelab had ordered them to light. They lit enough candles on the fallen chandelier to provide enough light for people to move about as needed without advertising to any passing looters or cultists that the librarium was occupied.

Slowly the night crawled by and eventually cracks of light could be seen through the chinks where the building had taken damage. Once a simple breakfast was shared the decision had to be faced where the group would go next. Wenduag reconfirmed her willingness to lead the group to the safe houses. The nearest was just on the other side of the nearby rubble that had been the wall between New Kenabres and The Gates districts. Wenduag said the owner of the manor, Kandro Nyserian, an erstwhile noble of long standing in the city, kept a secret room in the basement for cultists who needed a place to hide. She had been kept there after she had been recruited by the cult.

The second safehouse, a shop called Topaz Solutions, was far to the north. The third, The Tower of Estrod, was a fortress located in New Kenabres about a half mile to the north. If the cult controlled it, it would likely be a place for any cultists to gather to find safety in numbers.

The most straightforward way to get to the various destinations would be to check out the manor first and then cross back over to the Gates district and work north toward Horgus' manor, Anevia's house, Karas' apartment, and the Defender's Heart. The last two safehouse locations would be not far from there.

Karas looked like a deer caught in a light spell when Anarya walked over and sat beside him.

"I.. I'm.. We... Its..." he stuttered before taking a deep breath to catch himself, "I was just thinking... How lucky we are to have you with us. Otherwise these people surely would have died. I mean, my wounds heal a little on their own but I'm no healer. I couldn't save others like you."

He paused a moment, looking at his bloodstained hands, "I just know how to fight. Its... All I'm really good for I guess. I... Like being around you. It helps balance out the anger in my blood I think. Like she used to."

He offered her a weak smile.

Anarya reached out and put a hand on Karas's. She wondered why her heart was beating so fast. "I think we are lucky to have you too, Karas. We all might have never made it up here without you."

"'Her' is Terendelev, isn't it?" Anarya asked softly. "I grew up in the city so I know of her, though I only saw her rarely. Can you... tell me about her?" Her hand still lay in Karas's.

He looked at the delicate hand that lay in his rough claw and, as she asked about Terendelev, his smile gained some strength. "She was my savior, my mentor, and she was Family. She saved me from zealous execution. She took me in and taught me all I would learn. She taught me to fight, she taught me art, she even taught me about the arcane, though I don't seem to have any knack for it. She was kind beyond measure though a stern teacher."

He closed his hand with hers and recounted many stories of lessons and laughs up through the day of the attack.

"I will miss her forever. The closest thing to a mother I've had since I was taken by that cult. But she wouldn't want me to linger on grief and revenge."

Any lingering preoccupation that Avelina might have had with Aravashnial's admonishments disappeared the moment she finally glimpsed Karas and Anarya. She silently cursed herself for her lack of warriness, then--remembering Favored Souls and Curseless Oracles are Above Such Things--admonished herself for such impulsiveness.

Grinning uncontrollably, she tried to find a position near Karas and Anarya in whih she could observe them and listen-in without being noticed.

Normally, Ellena would have been entertained by Avelina's excitement at the goings on between the other two. It made Ellena question even more her actions when the blackguard had taken her thoughts and made her strike the tiefling. She had learned to trust him over the last couple of weeks, and she was upset that she had betrayed that trust. Why wouldn't the Inheritor allow her to strike a friend? How could she remove his weakness from her soul?

As the storyteller wound down his exciting description of the battle for Blackwing, he tried to relieve the nervous energy incited by the events with a touching description of how Karas and Anarya sat talking after the battle was over. Many of the young girls, and, truth to tell, not a few of the young boys, although they would be loath to admit it, were hanging on each word. The storyteller smiled inwardly with satisfaction.

He concluded for the night, happy to let the youngsters chat among themselves about where character they thought should fall in love with which.

When Avelina turned to look at Tauni and made a hand gesture to the blinded elf, Tauni's attention was drawn to their exchange. With Avelina's final comment, Tauni quickly put together what they were talking about, but did nothing about it. At least, not immediately.

After Avelina was distracted by the budding romance, Rabbit took advantage of her moving away to approach Aravashnial again.

She quietly said "I understand what you were trying to do for Avelina, but I don't think she's ready to accept the truth. Perhaps she thinks it will diminish her faith or devotion somehow. I will look for signs that she may be willing to come to terms with it, and nudge her towards that goal. Perhaps then she may be willing to take more guidance from you."

Anarya smiled, watching the tiefling's lips move with rapt attention as he spoke of his fallen mentor. Karas looked so at peace when he talked of Terendelev. "I don't think I really know what a mother is like," she said. "I had a happy and safe childhood, so I could never complain. But parents... I always used to wonder what mine would be like. This was all that was left with me," she said, producing the ancient silver 'eye and sword' holy symbol. "The winged eye was the sign of Aroden," she mentioned, running her fingers over the delicate metal, "and Iomedae wore that symbol while she was mortal. That's why the sisters decided to call me Anarya. Anarya was a companion of Aroden in the tales of old Azlant. It was said she was a healer too."

"Does your name mean anything?" she asked Karas.

That Night

Karas thought long and hard. "She told me once, that Karas meant Courage in Draconic. I've tried to live up to that description as I could. I only have faint memory of my birth mother. A strong and devout crusader. She did as best as she could for me, then the cultists came in disguise and took me. I spent 20 years in a cage underground. I still dont remember where it was."

His brow furrowed a minute but he again looked at her hands and smiled. "But we should rest. We have a lot to do in the morning and we need to be ready. Let's talk more tomorrow ok?" Is this true happiness? This fluttering heart?

That morning

Karas awoke and went through his preparation routine with a smile and bounce in his step. After a breakfast of ration he carried he found the group and waited on the decision of where to trek next.

"Of course," Anarya replied, though she very much wanted to insist she needed no sleep, and could stay up talking like this forever. "Goodnight, Karas," she said, firmly squeezing his much larger hand in her own. Blushing, and finding it hard to hide her smile as she climbed to her feet, she readied her bedroll and prepared to sleep. It would not come to her for several hours. She lay awake, smiling into the darkness with a pounding heart. When she finally did drift off, she slipped into a world of vivid dreams which all seemed very important. When she awoke in the morning, she knew she should write them down, remember how clear they had been. But by the time she had rubbed her eyes and noticed the sunlight streaming through the ruined ceiling of the library, the images had all vanished, leaving only the memories of last night.

Anarya nearly dropped her breakfast several times as she ate, distractedly looking over at Karas. She hovered near Karas as the others prepared spells and readied themselves for the journey. She felt like striking up a conversation, but with all the others present, she just couldn't think of anything to say. Being near him was enough for now, she decided happily as the bustle of the group breaking camp progressed all around her.
